2. What is Film Classification?
It is a guideline used to safeguard children and vulnerable adults from
unsuitable and even harmful content shown in particular films and
videos. It also helps consumers, especially parents and guardians make
knowledgeable decisions when choosing films to view.
An age rating is given to every film set for theatrical release which
prohibits any person under that age from viewing the film.
3. How Is It Done?
Before a view theatrically released, two examiners view the film,
examining it for issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, dangerous
and easily imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence.
It is given an age rating based on guidelines made by the British Board
of Film Classification which is confirmed by a Senior Examiner.
The same process exists for DVDs and Blu-rays though generally these
are seen by one Examiner. However, opinions from other Examiners
may be required for more difficult works.
The process for rating DVDs and Blu-rays is stricter because it is much
easier for under-age viewing at home and for them to be watching
scenes out of context.
