Trash and Treasure Would you like to go on a treasure hunt? When we research, it’s like looking for a pirate’s treasure.
What Did Pirates Use to Find Treasure? That’s right. They used a map. When we research our maps are going to be non-fiction books, encyclopedias, and the internet.
We know that an X usually marked the spot on the map where the treasure was located. Was the treasure sitting on top of the ground? NO! We’ll have to dig for our treasure, too! When we dig for treasure, we have to get rid of the dirt and rocks…the trash. We just want the treasure. Treasure Words-words that answer research questions. Trash-Words that don’t!
Let’s practice finding treasure words in the sentences below: Research Question: What did pirates eat? For hungry pirates, the menu was very short. “Not boiled turtle again?!”. When there was fresh meat available, it was usually turtle. When turtles couldn’t be found and the fish didn’t bite, the pirates survived on biscuits or dried meat. It was washed down with beer or wine.
Research Question: What did pirates wear? When you think of a pirate, the tricorn hat will probably be one of the first things to pop into your head. They also wore knitted caps, too. Pirates often used a simple cloth to tie around their heads. Pirate clothing didn’t always fit very well. The coats were often big, because pirates often stole clothes from other people! Pirates also wore breeches or pants. The pirate eye patch is another popular item of pirate clothing. They wore these to cover the eye that was lost in battle. They wore gold jewelry to show how rich they were.
Research Question: Why did pirates have parrots as pets? It’s not surprising that pirate ships would keep cats as pets. They were useful to catch any mice or rats on board, but why would a pirate want a parrot? They didn’t eat a lot. That’s a good thing, because there wasn’t much food available. They weren’t very big, so the pirates wouldn’t try to eat them. Parrots liked people, so they didn’t try to attack the pirates. They could be taught tricks, which passed the time away on long
boring trips. They could keep pirates company. Since they could talk, parrots seemed smarter than the average pet. Parrots made pirates look important, because they were very expensive. No wonder every pirate wanted one! Do you think pirates bought their parrots? Probably not! Pirates probably got them from the wild or stole them like they did so many other things. There are over 300 different species of parrots across the wild. Polly want a cracker?
