- Texas is transitioning to a new system of performance standards that are linked from grade to grade, starting with postsecondary-readiness performance standards down through grade 3. This picture provides one example of the vertical alignment in mathematics instruction from grade 8 all the way down to kindergarten. Some boxes are shaded green to indicate Readiness Standards. Readiness standards are defined as those Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that are not only essential for success in the current grade or course but also important for preparedness in the next grade or course. The boxes shaded in yellow are the Supporting Standards in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Instruction from Kindergarten through grade 8 provides the foundation for the High School course-specific assessments in this new vertically aligned system.
