According to the international organization
for migration, migration is one of the key
global issues of the 21st century. There are
about 192 million people or about 3% of
world’s population who are living outside
their place of birth. UNAIDS defined
international labour migration as the
movement of people across national
borders for employment.
3. Significance of the study
In Nepal socio- economic and political
factors are seen to be responsible for
including large scale migration.
There are an estimated 967,00 to 1,51000
seasonal labour migrants in Nepal.
Separated from their spouses and adrift
from the social bindings many of these
migrants indulge in both internal and
external are high risk groups for HIV
transmission.
4. Contd….
Recent data shows around 20% of migrants
engage in unprotected sex in India and as a
result, this group now accounts for 40% of all
HIV infection in Nepal.
HIV prevalence in migrants is reported at
1.4% (west) and 8.0 % (far west) although
prevalence among wives of migrant is 3.3%.
Knowledge about HIV among migrant appears
to be the lowest 15.8. In the far western region
and 17.2 % in western region.
5. Significance contd…….
A 2002 study suggests that HIV prevalence
is nearly 8% in the migrants returning from
Mumbai. According to above projected
