Matches have been around for centuries but were improved in the 1830s by Johan Edvard Lundstrom, who coated small wooden sticks with white phosphorus and potassium chlorate. This created the first practical "friction match" that could be easily lit by rubbing the stick on a surface. His invention launched a new match-making industry and replaced previous methods of starting fires that were more dangerous or unreliable.
