Workshop done by youth and volunteers from MAC Criancas Unidas to give an understanding to Brazilian Capoeira students in Sao Paulo about the history, evolution, and current dynamic of Capoeira in Timor-Leste. (Note this was accompanied by a video made by MAC youth which is too heavy to upload at the moment)
For all the Mestres, past and present, that suffered and sacrificed so
much so that we can learn and practice Capoeira today. Its because of
them that we have the opportunity to ginga and share this art.
3. Examples of Social Capoeira
Movements in communities
vulnerable to conflict being carried-
out around the world…
8. Motivação/Motivation:
• A verdadeira Capoeira não nasceu em uma academia
mas nasceu dentro da comunidade…
Because the true Capoeira wasn’t born in a gym but
inside the community...
E dentro dela sempre viverá…
And its there where it will forever
live....
10. Essência Social de Capoeira
A Capoeira na sua essência e raiz
começou como uma arte e manifestação
cultural que permitia aos indivíduos
sem uma base de confiança ou amizade,
viverem juntos durante muito tempo de
sofrimento extremo... Pessoas que
talvez não interagiriam... Se
encontraram lutando por um objetivo
comum: a verdadeira liberdade...
11. Social Essence of Capoeira
Capoeira, in essence and roots was
began as a cultural manefestation and
artform which allowed individuals that
didn’t necessarily know or trust each
other to live together during a time of
extreme suffering... People that found
themselves finding for one common
objective: true freedom.
12. Capoeira “Social”

14. Capoeira “Social”
In Timor-Leste the youth call the Capoeira that
they practice, “Social Capoeira” becauses they
use Capoeira as a means of promoting the mission of
MAC which is:
Develop the rights of the youngest Timorese citizens
through participatory activities whcih help them to
reduce violence in their communities and promote as
well as defend the rights of children, adolescents
, and youth.
Another reason is that we are not a commercial
group, we are an NGO. We cannot exclude children or
youth that do not have money for classes or
uniforms. For this reason, because we cannot
obligate the young people to buy uniforms they
cannot afford.

16. Capoeira nasceu no Timor-
Leste no final de Decembro 2002,
so dois anos depois de
Independencia de Indonesia...um
tempo de muita dificuldade e
incerteza...
Pois, quando os Indónesias foram
embora em 1999 deixaram o povo
realmente traumatizado...
E as Criancas...pois

in late December 2002, just two
years after Independance.
When the Indonesians left in 1999,
they left the people truly
traumatized...
And the children...well
19. As criancas tiveram sua independência “no
papel” mas em quanto a seus direitos
(inicialmente), nao foram reconhecidos...
The children had their independance, “on
paper” but in relation to their rights
rights (initially) were not being
recognized.
Não haviam espaços seguros... A
violência estava nas casas, nas
escolas... e nas ruas...
There were no safe places...the violence was
in their houses, in the schools, and on the
streets.

24. Geografia
A ilha de Timor está situada no
Sudeste Asiático, bastante próxima da
Oceania. O nome da ilha é de origem
malaia “Timur Timur”, significando
Oriente.
Timor-Leste, ocupa a parte oriente da
ilhia de Timor

26. Geography
• The island of Timor-Leste is located in
Southeast Asia, very close to Oceana. The
name of the island has Malay origions,
“Timur-Timur” meaning the east.
• Timor-Leste Occupies the eastern side of the
island of Timor.

29. Capoeira no Timor-Leste 2006-Hoje
No 2006, só quatro anos depois da
Restauração de Independência…em o que
os lideres políticos ate hoje falam foi
uma grande fracasso de lideranças…o
pais caiu em novo crisis
Durante o tempo de eleições, os grupos
de artes maricas que existiram desde
tempo de Indonésia, começaram a lutar
com muita violência…
30. Capoeira in Timor-Leste (2006-
Hoje)
In 2006, only four years after the
Restoration of Independance in what
many of todays political leaders admit
to being a failure of leadership, the
country fell into a new crisis.
During the time of elections, many of
the youth martial arts groups that
existed from the time of Indonesia
began to fight each other...
31.
32. • Quasi cada bairro estava contra cada
bairo...
• O pais ficou dividido com o oriente
contra o occidental.
• Entre um ano so....muitas casas e
negócios foram quemados, e destruíram
muita infra-estrutura
• E porque muitos (nao todos)
participaram
Muitos jovens estavan contra outros
33. • Almost every neighborhood was against
another neighborhood .
• The country was divided between the East
and the West.
• In just one year many houses and
businessess were burned and
infrastructure was destroyed.
• And because many (not all) youth
participated
It was youth against youth until even
today its difficult to find trust between
youth from different neighborhoods...
34. Muitas pessoas ligam a Capoeira com
Arte marciais mas dentro de nosso
projecto não podemos chamar a Capoeira,
“Arte Marcial” mas “Arte, Cultura,
Esporte, e Educacao” porque muitos dos
grupos de Arte marciais no Timor Leste
normalmente usan Artes marciais para
fazer violencia...
Nos usamos a Capoeira para promover a
paz e lutar contra violencia...
35.
36. Many people connect Capoeira with
Martial Arts but in our project we
don’t call Capoeira a “Martial
Art” but “Art, Culture, Sport, and
Education” because many of the
martial arts in Timor-Leste use
Martial Arts to make violence
But we use Capoeira to promote
peace and fight against violence...
