The document discusses target audiences for films, including demographics like age, gender, and socioeconomic class. It provides demographic data for specific horror films like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead, and 28 Days Later, showing that the primary target audience for these R-rated horror films is 15-24 year old males from working class backgrounds. The document also discusses psychographic segmentation and identifies escapists and adventurers as personality types likely to be attracted to post-apocalyptic horror films.
2. What is a target audience?
A target audience is a group of specified specific people that a business/company aims to
sell their product to (In this case films.) A film would develop and make a film in terms of
who is the film aimed at? These could be split into things like What age is my film aimed at?
What gender are more likely to go see it? What class will more likely see my film? These
are all part of one of the 4 methods of defining a target audience called demographics.
Another method is called Psychographics, this simply is is the study of personality, values,
attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. There are 7 categories people fit into when defined with
psychographics and these are the Resigned, Strugglers, Mainstreamers, Aspirers,
Succeeders, Explorers and the Reformers. Even though there are only seven a person can
fit into more than one category. Then you have lifestyles and media consumption. which
are two less looked at but still important ways of segmenting your target market.
3. Silent Hill is a psychological action-
horror based on the game series
developed by Konami The film follows
Rose, who takes her adopted daughter
Sharon to the town of Silent Hill, for
which the latter cries while sleepwalking.
Arriving at Silent Hill, Rose is involved in
a car accident and awakens to find
Sharon missing; while searching for her
daughter, she fights a local cult while
uncovering Sharon's connection to the
town's past.
As you can see the demographics for Silent Hill are showing most of the
viewers that went to see this film in cinema were between the ages of
15-24, male and in the C1 class.
4. Resident evil is yet another film
based on popular game series and
centres around the protagonist,
Alice, who is played by Milla
Jovovich. Alice is an undercover
personnel working for the main
antagonist corporation, Umbrella,
who develop a virus named the T
Virus which re animates dead cells
and ends up turning the dead into
walking zombies with only the
basic need, to feed.
Being only a certificate 15 the demographics for the majority of
views were in the 15-24 age group, mainly males and in class C1
so using this we can say the majority of people that watched this
film were in their teens or employed as a something like a
supervisor at a manual workplace maybe somewhere like a
building site or working somewhere as an accountant. This is
sort of the age and gender ratio i would be expecting my film
opening to be viewed by.
5. Dawn Of The Dead (2004) is a remake of George Romero’s 1978 cult classic
Dawn Of The Dead. The United States is overrun by a plague that rises
millions of blood thirsty corpses with only their basic need, to feed! The film
revolves around the narrative of a small group of survivors in suburban
Milwaukee two of which are a nurse and police officer.
The demographics for
this supernatural
zombie horror range
from 15-24 all the way
to the 45+ category, a
landslide of the
viewers gender being
male (67%) and 30% of
the viewers being in
the AB class.
6. The film 28 Days Later is your typical zombie thriller, directed by Danny Boyle, where a virus
called the ‘Rage Virus’ is being tested on monkeys and when a group of activists break into
the lab the monkeys go on a rage and start the infestation which turns people into blood
thirsty raging zombies.
28 days later being an 18, like
resident evil, had the majority
of their views in the age range
of 15-24 even though 15&16
year olds would not be able to
get in to see it in the cinema,
the majority is yet again a
higher percentage of males
and people from the C1 class
viewed it more than those
from A,B,C2,D and E class.
7. Psychographics
• The typical audience for a post-apocalyptic, psychological horror film
would be the escapist who’s life is either so bleak and they believe
they would not make it anywhere so they watch them in order to
escape reality and get some excitement in their life. Also the
adventurer would probably be into these films as it would cause some
sense of excitement and challenge of survival of the fittest perfect for
an adventurer.
8. What will my target audience be?
• The target audience i am choosing for my film is going to be the 15-25
year old E-D maybe C2 class and either female and male but chances
are the majority of viewers would in fact be male.
