A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile in February 2010, killing over 200 people. The earthquake caused widespread damage across Chile, destroying buildings, roads, and infrastructure and cutting off electricity, water, and phone lines. It generated a large tsunami that caused damage as far away as French Polynesia and Hawaii. Aftershocks continued to threaten the region, collapsing more buildings and structures and halting operations at Santiago's international airport for three days. Other countries provided aid to Chile to help its people recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami.
