2. Why? Why Postmodernism? The Freedom Rebellious Relates to ‘design’ students Emotional Why a couch? Need
3. How Design Process followed Incorporation of Postmodernism Design Brief Need Statement Inspiration User Study Specifications & Constraints Ideation Final Concept Concept Refinement Modeling Prototyping
4. Design Brief Designing a couch using principles of postmodernism and modularity for students who use Den Lambda. Objectives: To understand post modernist theory and how it works in the context of Furniture Design as well as space management.
5. Need Statement To Design a Post Modern Couch for Students by using elements of a traditional ‘khatiya’ which will be used for discussion and resting.
14. Specifications & Constraints Sitting and Resting Flexible in movement Lightweight Should facilitate use of laptop Easy to manufacture Should follow Postmodernism Should be conductive for discussions Should stay true to local values Cost Effective Space Efficient Comfortable Aesthetic Cater to the style consciousness of the young user group. Should raise curiosity about postmodernist principles.

19. At least 3 movable units shall be incorporated Should facilitate use of laptop: 1 to 2 laptops Cost Effective : Less than Rs. 15,000. Space Efficient: Less than 7ft X 5ft (the space currently available in the Den).
20. Material Exploration Materials used: Mahua, Sesum, Seem, Babool Alternate materials used: Coconut Leftover, Munj, Patava Price Range: Rs 300 - Rs 800 For Sesum khatiya: Rs, 1200-1800 Dimensions: 6’6” X 3’ X 1’ 6” 6’X 4’ X 1’6” Details of manufacturing: Adhvain knot is used Minimum use of nails Ball and socket Joints Tongue and Groove Joints
24. Concept Finalization The design that sufficed most of the specifications and constraints was finalized. The design also facilitated modularity with pronounced postmodern appeal By adopting angular geometries, the design became more flexible. This also endorsed Postmodern values to the furniture significantly. This also allowed a more efficient space management compared to other forms. The inspirational details of Khatiya were satisfactorily integrated in the final design.
25. Concept Refinement Material for seating has been revised. Earlier Plastic threads were to be used. However, to make the seats more comfortable, elastic ropes have been proposed. The corner in the larger seating, i.e. seating no. 4 has been rearranged. Color palettes for enhancing the Post modernist appearance of the furniture have been selected. Color coding has been provided to make sure that the modular units of the furniture are placed back correctly without confusion.
