About delivery of service. Primarily came out of the business applications space. SOA – service composition or assembly, become heavily enterprise focused of late. Rise of service orientation is more important as it is the new dev paradigm. MS invested enormously here with .NET and web services. Web 2.0 – service experience and economics. Renaissance of Web development after the collapse of the bubble, harnessing collective intelligence, richer browser experiences via AJAX but not limited to the browser. More debate over what this one means but people seem to know it when they see it. O’Reilly’s compact definition includes “architecture of participation”.All address different aspects of services and likely to be increasingly intertwined. Been marching towards services for a couple years now – that trajectory continues and acceleratesThere are a couple things that add up to S+S:Starts with fact services are softwareWe take an expansive view – can take technology much further and adoption is still limited to early adopters todayWe need integration across these different phenomenaCould really use a platform that brings all these phenomena to bear, makes it much easier and accessible to much broader set of developersWe call this Software + Services – our strategy for this era
- Microsoft’s strategy – S+S - beats Software or Services alone.Based on the premise that the combined capability of both software and services will always exceed the traditional software-only approach or the so-called ‘pure play SaaS’ approach.Tendency for promoters of newer technologies to claim that their technologies address every need; Microsoft is more pragmatic response and, while accepting the tremendous advantages of services, also believes in the merits of software and believes the future will be a hybrid of both.Why force customers and partners to make the trade-off between the benefits of software and the benefits of services.This is Microsoft’s overarching strategy and its maximizes capabilities, flexibility and choice for Microsoft’s customers and partners
- Not all services created equalFinishedThe way most people think about SaaS today – end-user functionality delivered as services over the Web. The Microsoft examples listed on this slide are complemented by software – e.g. Outlook client for Dynamics Live CRM – as appropriate. AttachedNot useful on a standalone basis, but extremely useful when attached to some underlying software or service asset.Building blocksNot interesting to end users, but very interesting to developers – service-based building blocks you’d need to build an appTakeaway - don’t necessarily think about services through the lens of the appISVs: you don’t necessarily need to go off and build a SaaS version of your op-premise app to play in this world – attached services are a path to augmenting what you already haveBuilding blocks are for developers – you may use them to build your app (storage in the sky, for example). - First, the experiences are integrated and contextual; Utilizing our advances in user interface, the appropriate backend capabilities are surfaced through the client user interface so people can seamlessly traverse across client, server and increasingly services capabilities. This approach to user experience drives adoption and increases impact. CRM light-ups in Outlook and custom built Office Business Applications are great examples of how on-premise software and service-based assets come together in the Office client. Another great example of how we can light up the server functionality in a seamless user experience is the Document Info Panel and authoring experience in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The document info panel surfaces SharePoint server data including, metadata, workflow and group policy details to the user within the context of authoring in the client. Internet tools behind the firewall. Recognizing that the internet has spawned a new series of collaboration and social sw tools that have relevance in the enterprise. BPI delivers IM, wikis, blogs, mysites. Scenarios popularized on the Internet, delivered through BPI in a managed environment with the ability to apply IT controls like security, policies and auditing. We recognizing that people interact with our sw under a variety of conditions – so supporting scenario that work offline and in limited bandwidth situations is a key elements to the ideal SW + Service experience.Also.. With user experience, of course you see the familiar rich client – but also mobile and browser clients. We have several browser clients including Outlook Web Access that has been around for years. The basic tenet is to provide the right tool for the right job. We recognize that users will interact with our services and servers through a variety of devices; rich PC, mobile client or browser only. The Business Productivity Infrastructure provided through 2007 Office System delivers on this experience today and we continue to invest in future advances.
