1. Design Statement Sherwin-Williams 2011 Stir Design Contest: Residential Designed by: Sabrina Alfin Home offices are often an afterthought in a residential design plan. Designs can put too much emphasis on “office” and lose the integration with the rest of the residence, or too much on the “home” part of the equation and thus lose real functionality. So how does one create a sense of calm and sophistication, while still making it work well for the user? The answer is in creating a palette that can work in both settings, while choosing furniture and materials that are timeless but still feel fresh and innovative. I call my design scheme “Urban Beach”, choosing a Sherwin-Williams color palette that invokes the calming effect of the sea and sun, and the texture and weathered patina of driftwood. I chose six colors, including: Glitzy Gold (SW 6691), Rivulet (SW 6760), Aqueduct (SW 6758), Poised Taupe (SW 6039), Snowbound (SW 7004), and Black Magic (SW 6991). As you’ll see in the attached entry, I believe the yellow-gold and the taupe, along with the choice of more modern furniture and graphic patterns, create a more stylish and citified interpretation of traditional beach décor, which would be as suitable in town as it would in a more contemporary home by the shore. The beach theme is further invoked with more modern accessories and lighting, including a cubist-like driftwood floor lamp, a capiz shell drum pendant, coral-like ceramic end tables, and sea-glass votives, vases, and bowls. Functionality is addressed with ample file drawers, bookshelves, and locker baskets for storage, a wide mid-century modern inspired desk made of reclaimed wood in a driftwood finish, and a meeting table for consulting with clients. And comfortable seating in front of the fireplace lined with Aqua penny round tiles reminds us we’re still in someone’s home, melding the cozy with the productive.
