1.Uttarakhand disaster 
• Year : 22 jun 2013 
• Major reason:Heavy rainfall , cloudburst 
and land slid. 
• Impact : More than 1 lakh people were 
suffered from this. Approx to thousand 
people lost their lives. 
• Econonomic loss: several bridge, transport 
systems damaged and approx 12K crore 
loss of tourism.

• Year : 2004 
• Major reason: 
Earthquake near the 
Indonesian Island of 
Sumatra 
• Impact : An estimated 
10,136 people died, 5,832 
reported missing and 
lakhs of people were 
rendered homeless 
according to the official 
reports given by Indian 
government.

3. Latur Earthquake 
• Year : 1993 , Maharashtra 
• Major reason: An earthquake measuring 7.4 
on Richter scale struck at 4 a.m 
• Impact :Approximately 20,000 people died 
and around 30,000 were injured. About 52 
villages were totally destroyed.
4. Gujarat Earthquake 
• Year : 2001,Bhuj in Gujrat 
• Major reason: An earthquake with a magnitude 
of 7.7 on Richter scale hit at about 08:46 a.m. 
• Impact : Around 20,000 people were killed, 
1,67,000 injured and about 6,00,000 people were 
left homeless. The city of Bhuj that lied only 20 
km from the epicenter was totally devastated. 
• Econonomic loss: Total damages were assessed to 
be in excess of $5.5 billion

5.Bengal Famine of 1943 
• Year : 1943 
• Major reason: A catastrophic famine struck the 
undivided Bengal. 
• Impact : Death Approximately 15 lakhs. Highest 
mortality was not in the poor groups of the 
society, but among artisans and small traders 
whose income vanished when people spent all 
their savings on food and did not employ 
artisans. A series of crop failure caused localized 
famines in 1940-41.

6. Uttarkashi earthquake 
• Year : 20 October 1991 in the Uttarkashi 
• Major reason: The earthquake, which 
measured 6.8 M. 
• Impact : 1294 villages and more than 3,00,000 
people were affected with the quake and 
42,400 houses were damaged.

7. Odisa cyclone 
• Year:October 29-30, 1999. 
• Imapct: These cyclones left a trail of death and 
destruction and devastated 14 districts in the State. 
About 8960 persons lost their lives, 4,50,000 cattle 
perished, about 2 million houses were damaged, about 
90 million trees were uprooted and 1.8 million ha. 
paddy and 33,000 ha. non-paddy cultivated land was 
affected. Infrastructure facilities were severely 
damaged. 
• Cause: special nature of the coastline, the shallow 
coastal ocean topography and the characteristics of 
tide in the North Bay of Bengal region.
Odisa cyclone
8. Barmer Floods in Rajasthan in 2006 
• Year : 2006 
• Major reason: About 723mm in just seven days that 
caused a major flood across Barmer district in 
Rajasthan, especially the northern and western 
regions . 
• Impact : The first point to note is that even after the 
rain stopped, the water did not drain out, because of 
an impermeable layer of sub-surface gypsum. This 
raises new problems related to health and 
environment. Already, more than 45 people have died 
of malaria and more than 5,000 have contracted the 
disease
Barmer flood
9. Ladakh floods 
• Year : 2010 
• Major reason: cloudburst and heavy overnight 
rains triggered flash floods, mudslides, and debris 
flows. 
• Impact : 200 people were reported missing in the 
initial aftermath of the storm, and thousands 
more were rendered homeless after the flooding 
caused extensive damage to property and 
infrastructure. Overall, 9000 people were directly 
affected by the event. At least 255 people are 
reported to have died.
Ladakh flood
10. Bihar flood 
• Year : 2008 
• Major reason: heavy monsoon rains and poor 
maintenance caused a breach in the Kosi embankment. 
Water passed through the breach at an estimated 
129,800 m³/s, inundating hundreds of villages in 
northern Bihar 
• Impact : The flood killed 250 people and forced nearly 
3 million people affected in Bihar. More than 300,000 
houses were destroyed and 840,000 acres of crops 
were damaged. Villagers in Bihar ate raw rice and flour 
mixed with polluted water. Hunger and disease were 
widespread.

11. Bhopal Gas Tragedy 
• Year : 1984 
• Impact : Run away process in storage Tank of 
chemical factory which Had a tremendous 
• effect: injured people and their posterit. 
• Major reason : Management-failure(Methyl 
isocayanate) 
• Fatalities: 8000 / 200000 , 558,125 injuries.

12 Kashmir earthquake 
• Year: October 8, 2005 
• Fatalities: 80,000 
• Magnitude:7.5 
• Impact: Lot of life loss and economic loss took 
place in that disaster

Barmer Floods in Rajasthan in 2006 • Year : 2006 • Major reason: About 723mm in just seven days that caused a major flood across Barmer district in Rajasthan, especially the northern and western regions . • Impact : The first point to note is that even after the rain stopped, the water did not drain out, because of an impermeable layer of sub-surface gypsum. This raises new problems related to health and environment. Already, more than 45 people have died of malaria and more than 5,000 have contracted the disease

Ladakh floods • Year : 2010 • Major reason: cloudburst and heavy overnight rains triggered flash floods, mudslides, and debris flows. • Impact : 200 people were reported missing in the initial aftermath of the storm, and thousands more were rendered homeless after the flooding caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure. Overall, 9000 people were directly affected by the event. At least 255 people are reported to have died.

Water passed through the breach at an estimated 129,800 m³/s, inundating hundreds of villages in northern Bihar • Impact : The flood killed 250 people and forced nearly 3 million people affected in Bihar. More than 300,000 houses were destroyed and 840,000 acres of crops were damaged. Villagers in Bihar ate raw rice and flour mixed with polluted water. Hunger and disease were widespread.
