"Training staff is too expensive
& then they leave..."
For many small & medium
sized businesses staff training
is considered a low priority.
On first glance this can seem
understandable, let’s look at
some of the arguments given
by small business owners &
managers for a lack of training
in their staff.
But what if they stay?
In a smaller business many staff are
fulfilling at least two job roles, and
often have more tasks on their agenda
then they can actually complete :
So where is the time for staff training?
Argument 1:
Staff Training is Time Consuming
Yes, staff training can take time out of a
busy schedule, but if the staff member is
getting training relevant to their role and
future role in the business, it is highly likely
that they will become more proficient at
the tasks you are giving them.
This means that firstly, they will complete
the tasks more efficiently (saving time) and
secondly, those tasks will not have to be
repeated because they will be done to a
better standard.
Argument 1:
“Staff Training is Time Consuming.”
The costs of staff training can
sometimes seem prohibitive.
Dependent on the course you want the
staff member to do this could be a half
day or a full day, or even a longer term
commitment & this costs money. As a
small business, many owners &
managers look at the costs and struggle
to see the return, & then also wonder
what will happen if all the staff want
training.
Argument 2:
Staff Training is Expensive
Argument 2:
“Staff Training is Expensive!”
There are costs to training staff, although there are also plenty of
ways to get very good value and even free training. Assuming
there are costs involved, you have to ask yourself what the
benefit will be. As with any other investment in your business,
you are evaluating Return On Investment (ROI).
If you are training someone on sales, how many more sales does
this person need to make to cover the cost of training? If it’s
customer service; how much of my time is spent handling
complaints and what is that worth.
These are just two examples, but the long term benefits of
training almost always outweigh the cost.
Argument 3:
“Once I’ve paid for the Training the Staff will Leave.”
Often small and medium sized business owners look at trained staff
as a more valuable commodity that will be poached by bigger
companies or that members of staff are using your business as a
stepping stone in their career.
There is no doubt that trained staff
are more valuable than untrained staff!
The key factor here, is that’s the same for you. If you retain a whole
team of untrained staff, then you get the results you deserve as a
business. If these staff stay with you for 10 years, then you get 10
years of lower quality work. Is that the result you’re looking for?
Summary
Staff training is so often viewed as low
priority & even worse considered a
cost/time not worth considering.
BUT, by asking yourself the question:
“What if they stay?”,
you will often find your way to
a new thought process when
it comes to staff training.
