normal body movement and/or control
Congenital:of or pertaining to a condition present at birth, whether
inherited or caused by the environment,
especially the uterine environment.
Prosthesis: An artificial device that replaces a missing or injured part
of the body
Congenital Limb Deformity: Birth defects in which a fetus' limbs
or extremities do not form properly while in utero

viruses during pregnancy
Oral contraceptives (The Pill)
Smoking
Genetics
6. Characteristics
Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (Club foot)
foot twisted inward, toes pointing down
most common in males
due to abnormal tendons, ligaments, bones
(affect structure of shape, size, position)
Genu Varum (Bow legs)
leg from the knee to ankle bend outward
Blount's Disease- noticeable by the age of 2
Rickets-Vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus
deficiency (absorption)
7. Treatment
Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (Club foot):
The Ponseti Method
1-2weeks of age: positioning of the foot and
casting
Casted for 5-7 days over a 6-8 week period
A tenotomy (cutting of a tendon) is needed
for correct heel placement
A final cast is worn for 3 weeks
A brace (a bar with easy strap-on shoes) is
then worn for 3 months
8. Treatment cont’d
Genu Varum (Bow legs)
In most cases, no treatment is necessary. In
regards to Blount's Disease, a leg brace or
surgery is needed to strengthen the leg.
With Rickets, Vitamin D and calcium will be
prescribed.
9. The Child Care Setting

addition of front wheels) to support the
use of the leg muscles and Faheen's need to

at child's level and a railing beside the toilet
to assist with getting on and off the toilet
11. Cont’d
Rearrange the furniture to provide more open
space to move around
Cubby: should be at the children's level.
Toys and Materials: should be at children's
level (not too low or too high: unsupportive to
children's needs)
Sensitivity/empathy: among staff, children,
and parents. Always use people first language
when speaking
12. Cont’d
Include books, pictures, and toys about people
(various ages/ethnicities) with disabilities (Read the
books to the children and have small discussions
with the them)
Teacher Knowledge: about physical
disabilities/people with mobility needs and provide
ongoing support
Positivity: Encouraging Faheen to try new things,
help when she appears to need it and also provide
her the space to do things on her own. Encourage
positive relationships among all of the children
13. Cont’d
Provide information on agencies regarding support
for children or people with disabilities and possible
financial/mobile assistance
Build a positive relationship with Faheen and her
family (as with all of the families) and provide them
with help and support in coping with their stresses
and fears for Faheen (idea of her not being able to
make friends)
Inclusion: Including Faheen's family in the
program and keeping them up to date (daily
conversations about Faheen, things they could help
her with at home, what she did that day, progress
report).

This agency caters to children and youth under the age of 19, with a wide range of disabilities. They provide clinical care and programs to support the needs of these children and to enhance their life experiences. A few of these programs consist of Aquatics, Spiritual Care, and a Spiral Garden. They also support and include the families of these children (ex: financially; family support fund/ other financial information). New clients may need a referral from a physician to have access to their programs. A specific form is to be filled out then faxed to the hospital. The form is then reviewed and a response will be provided. The cost depends on the programs (fee for service basis) (eg: Aquatic therapy for new clients is $80 for 8 sessions).Link: http://www.hollandbloorview.ca/index.phpHolland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. This assignment was designed to bring awareness and express respect of the wide range of diversity that is among us. Through this awareness comes the ability to value the needs and relationships of others. Lastly, it is our duty, as Early Childhood Educators to support our personal and social responsibility at the local, national or global level. For me, the most meaningful learning arose through my extensive amount of research through my case study. Initially, I felt as though I wasn’t going to acquire much knowledge through this assignment, especially having a made-up case study. However, as my research was progressing, I began to understand that this case study could happen (and probably has happened) in real life. I felt a lot of humbleness come over me. I started to empathize and truly feel that I had an obligation to this family. In the beginning, the research aspect was quite tedious and narrow. This might be due to the lack of knowledge I had of this type of physical disability/mobility need. To overcome this, I broke down the entire scenario and looked for definitions to help me gain a broader aspect of the case. Through this, I was able to find similar, relatable physical disabilities to help me understand and be responsive to this need. This helped me throughout the remainder of the assignment. As for my strengths, I find that I am a very responsive to other’s needs. Therefore, providing strategies to meet the needs of Faheen and her family (father) came quite naturally to me. Of course I needed assistance with different types of mobility aids, but otherwise, I felt that I provided a highly responsive environment in the child care setting to the best of my ability. This I felt was the most important learning that took place through this assignment.Another significant learning experience that arose through this assignment was meeting the needs of Faheen and her family through the research of support agencies in the Toronto area. Faheen, being so young, I felt that she needed fun, age appropriate support to accompany the medical support she required. As for her family, I felt as though they needed financial support along with fun experiences they could share with Faheen as well. As a young child, having copious amounts of surgeries could bring on a lot of stress. As her family, dealing with the medical bills and trying to support their child can too bring on lots of stress. So, the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital along with Variety Village, would provide them the best of both (or many other) worlds. Each provide interactive, fun, and spiritual programs that may relieve a lot of the stresses the family may be going through. Both agencies provide helpful information on funding or finance options. Lastly, both agencies are extremely family-friendly and support a wide range of needs the family may have, especially the importance of relationship building (within the family and socially). As an Early Childhood Educator, I was able to really support my view on inclusion and responsiveness along with my responsibility to support this family. Therefore, this for me was a very heart felt learning experience.Having experienced this assignment, I believe that ECE’s have a responsibility to children and families everywhere. Being aware of all needs and diversity around us is very important when supporting our needs and views along with valuing and respecting the needs and relationships of others. If we can all understand this need and awareness and practise ongoing respect in addition to continuously performing our necessary duties, then it’ll be that much easier and much more efficient to providing high quality and responsive care to ourselves as professionals and to meeting the needs of all children and their families.
