His vision on Education:
The education system should instil in the minds of students capacities of

Bill
Gates
Most Successful
Entrepreneur
Of 20th Century
It was a risk that’s paid
off Immensely!!
About Bill Gates
• William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October
28, 1955) is an American business magnate,
philanthropist, and chairman of Microsoft, the
software company he founded with Paul Allen.
He is consistently ranked among the world's
wealthiest people. During his career at
Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and
chief software architect. He has also authored
or co-authored several books.
Early Days
• Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, to
William H. Gates, Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates,
of English, German, and Scotch-Irish descent.
His family was upper middle class; his father
was a prominent lawyer, his mother served on
the board of directors for First Interstate
BancSystem and the United Way.
Childhood
• Gates has one elder sister, Kristi
(Kristianne), and one younger
sister, Libby. He was the fourth of
his name in his family. Early on in
his life, Gates' parents had a law
career in mind for him.
Schooling
He was enrolled at Lakeside school
in 13.
His school has purchased a
computer terminal and a block of
time of computers of General
Electric.
Gates started taking interest in
programming.
Prodigy
• He wrote his first computer program on Tic-
Tac-Toe. Gates was fascinated by the machine
and how it would always execute software
code perfectly. When he reflected back on
that moment, he commented on it and said,
"There was just something neat about the
machine."
Notorious Computer Geek
• Since programming was in his blood, he
along with his four friends were banned by
Computer Center Corporation for exploiting
bugs in the system so that they can get more
time with computers. After the ban for
students were offered to work in CCC. Later
they were hired by Information Sciences Inc.
to write a program in COBOL.
A Genius
• The Company soon realized his capabilities
of programming, he was offered to write
school's computer program to schedule
students in classes. He deliberately modified
the code so that he was placed in classes with
mostly female students. He later stated that “It
was hard to tear myself away from a machine at which
I could so unambiguously demonstrate success.”
College Pals
• Gates graduated from Lakeside School in
1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT
and enrolled at Harvard College in the autumn
of 1973. While at Harvard, he met Steve
Ballmer, who later succeeded Gates as CEO of
Microsoft. He did not have a definite study
plan while a student at Harvardand spent a
lot of time using the school's computers.
Incomplete
Graduation
• In 1974, MITS Altair 8800 Computer came into
market. Gates and Allen had sought this event as
their opportunity to start their business of
developing system emulators. He proposed the
company to show their demonstration in BASIC
language. As a consequence of successful
demonstration they got an opportunity to develop
the emulator. Paul Allen was hired by the
company. While Gates took a leave from college to
complete the project and never returned to
Harvard.
•
I knew what I have to do……
So I never came back!!!
Launching A Revolution:
Starting Of
MICROSOFT
• Soon after developing the emulator of Altair
8800 and when Gates drop out the college,
they bind into a partnership and name their
firm as Micro-soft. and had their first office
located in Albuquerque. Within a year, the
hyphen was dropped, and on November 26,
1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was
registered with the Office of the Secretary of
the State of New Mexico.
Dream On! Dream On! Dream On!
Dream until your dream comes true!!
IBM Partnership
• In 1980, IBM approached Gates to develop a
BASIC interpreter for their PC, but Gates
referred them to SCP. IBM representatives
requested Gates for developing the OS as they
got problems in licensing from SCP. A few
weeks later Gates proposed using 86-
DOS(QDOS), an operating system similar to
CP/M SCP.
A Witty
Decision
• Gates did not offer to transfer the copyright
on the operating system, because he believed
that other hardware vendors would clone
IBM's system . They did, and the sales of MS-
DOS made Microsoft a major player in the
industry.
Microsoft made a deal with SCP
to become the exclusive
licensing agent, and later the full
owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting
the operating system for the PC,
Microsoft delivered it to IBM as
PC-DOS in exchange for a one-
time fee of $50,000.Good Job Billy!!!
Emerging Of Windows
• Microsoft launched its first retail
version of Microsoft Windows on
November 20, 1985 and made an
agreement with IBM PC’s. As the
time progressed, Microsoft
developed a pool of Software
Engineers and released different
versions of widows till date.
Quick Facts:
Today, 91% of
Computers Use
Windows OS!!!
Keys to Gates Success

Vision
• In order to remain well focused while
running a company one requires to have a
Vision and a Mission. When Bill Gates was
asked by Fortune to explain the
astounding success of his brainchild,
Microsoft, his immediate response was,
“Our vision, which has not changed since
the day the company was founded.”
Team Work!!!
• While Gates has been the famous face of Microsoft for
over thirty years, it took the help of numerous other trusted
individuals to help realize the company’s success
“At Microsoft, there are lots of brilliant
ideas, but the image is that they all come
from the top,” says Gates. “I’m afraid
that’s not quite right.”
“We weren’t trying to just go public
and get rich,” recalls Gates of his early
Microsoft days. “There was no near-
term thing. It always was this many-
decades thing where there were no
shortcuts and we’d sort of put one foot
in front of the other.”
Long Term
Thinking
“Every now and then I like to pick up a copy of
Time magazine and read every article from
beginning to end, not just the articles that
interest me most,” says Gates. “That way you
can be certain to learn something you didn’t
know previously.”
Never Stop Learning!!!
One of Microsoft's key strategies is, "Find
smart people who know the technology
and the business."
His Management Styles

Teachings…
• Swami Vivekananda firmly
believed in the equality of
mankind and preached
extensively to remove biases
and exploitation based on
caste, creed, race and gender.
• Swamiji is widely regarded as

Philosophy of education….
“You regard that man to be educated who obtains some
degrees, has passed out of some examinations, is able to
deliver fluent lectures. But this is not real education.
Real education is that which prepares a man for struggle
of existence. It prepares a man for social service,
develops his character and finally imbues him with the
spirit and courage of a lion. Any other education is worse
than useless.”
“You have to be practical in all spheres of work. The
whole country, has been ruined by mass theories.”
Contd….
He emphasizes on spiritual development of child along with
material advancement.
Naturalism
The real education
is possible only
through nature and
natural
propensities.
Idealism
Spiritual and moral
development of child,
the essence of which
is already present in
him.
Pragmatism
Great emphasis on the
western education of
technology, commerce,
industry and science to
achieve material
prosperity.
Harmonious synthesis of the ancient
Indian ideals and Modern Western
beliefs.

Basic principles of
Educational Philosophy…..
•Only study of books is not education.
•Knowledge lies hidden in the mind of man. He uncovers and
develops it by his own efforts.
•Concentration is the key to all knowledge. For this, practice
of Brahamcharya is very essential.
•Purity of thought, speech and deed is self- discipline.
•Education should develop the child physically, mentally and
spiritually.
Contd….
•Education should develop character, mental power,
intelligence and inculcate self – confidence with self reliance.
•Religious education should be imparted through sweet
impressions and fine conduct in preference to books.
•Boys and girls should receive the same education.
•Mass education.
•Technical education (industrial growth and economic
prosperity of the nation).

Teacher is a philosopher, friend
and guide. He should
sympathetically bring out the
latent knowledge in a child by
inspiration.
All those subjects should be
included in the curriculum
which promote the material and
spiritual advancement of a
Child is the store and repository
of all learning- material and

For spiritual perfection: Swamiji
prescribed Religion, Philosophy,
Puranic lore, Upanishads,
company of saints and their
preaching.
For material advancement and

Curriculum: three parts….
Methods of teaching…..
Swamiji prescribed the same ancient spiritual method
of teaching wherein the guru and his disciples lived in a close
association as in a family. Characteristics of this method are:
a) To control fleeting mental faculties by the practice of yoga.
b) To develop the mind by concentration and deep
meditation.
c) To gain knowledge through lectures, discussions, self-
experience and creative activities.
d) To imitate the qualities and character of teacher by
intelligent and clear understanding.
e) To lead the child on the right path by means of individual
Education of Masses…..
“I consider that the great
national sin is the neglect of
the masses, and that is one of
the cause of our downfall. No
amount of politics would be of
any avail until the masses of
India are once more well-

Making
Education….
Harmonious synthesis of the ancient Indian ideals and
Modern Western beliefs.
Swamiji lays great stress on international brotherhood as
well as Nationalism.
Self Education
•Man is caught in the net of his own karmas from which he alone
•Manifestation of Real nature which is the Effulgent, the Resplend
•This is possible only in the case of a teacher who has risen high
Essence of Man
making education….
•The only motive in imparting education should be love for the
educand, for the man in him.
•The spiritual force works through love.
•Love makes the educator to take the educand from untruth to
truth, darkness to light and death to immorality.
•The teacher should teach the educand to concentrate his
attention, only then can the problems be solved. The greater
the attention, the more is the effort effective.
Love
Three means of Man
making education….
Concentration
It is the key of true knowledge.
It makes a person great
scholar.
For some educands it is easy
while for some persons it is
difficult so teacher must help
each educand separately.
Brahmacharya or abstinence
is the first means of achieving
concentration. It transforms
Discussion
It should be carried
out in an informal
atmosphere.
Contemplation
It should be
practiced in a calm
and quiet
atmosphere with the
mind fully alive.
Science and Vedanta
•Acc. to him what is really needed in India is a harmony
between Western Science and Indian Vedanta.
•He realized that the curriculum must be able to achieve the
development of every aspect of the child’s personality.
•The ideal of utility should be substituted by the ideal of
duty through the teaching of art.
Training in art
•Mother tongue
•Regional languages
•There should be a common language which is necessary
to keep country united.
•Samskrit: it is the source of all Indian languages and a
repository of all inherited knowledge.
•“You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through
the study of Gita.”
•Self realization and character building is impossible in the
absence of good health.
•That is why he put so much stress on physical education
Medium of Instruction
Physical Education
Moral & Religious Education
•Religion is the inner most core of the education.
•Religion should not be the whole of curriculum but only a
part of it.
•It is only by a synthesis of religious and science that man
may reap the advantage of both.
“We have to give them secular education. We have to
follow the plan laid down by our ancestors, that is, to
bring all the ideals slowly down among the masses. Raise
them slowly up, raise them to equality. Impart secular
knowledge through religion.”
“Self confidence is the real religion”.
“Truth is power and untruth is weakness”.
“We have to speak less and work more, achieve power
first than anything else”.
“Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest
this Divinity within by controlling nature, external and
internal”. ..... Swami
