Deforestation
1. Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of
trees where the land is thereafter converted to a nonforest use. Example of Deforestation include
conversion of forestland farms, ranches or urban use.
DEFORESTATION
2. CAUSES OF DEFORESTTION:Used for urban & construction purposes-The cutting down
of trees for lumber that is used for building , materials,
furniture & paper products. Forests are also cleared in
order to accommodate expanding urban areas.
To grow crops-Forests are also cut down in order to clear
land for growing crops.
To create grazing land-Forests are cut down in order to
create land for grazing cattle.
Used for fuel-Trees are cut down in developing countries to
be used as firewood or turned into charcoal, which are for
heating & cooking purposes.
3. Acid rains-Acid rain damages the forests. It robs the soil of
essential nutrients & releases aluminum in the soil which makes
it hard for trees to take up water .
Overpopulation-This makes a significant loss of forests land
both for harvesting forest products as more people need more
lumber to build their houses & for developing the greater area
their houses, malls, business centers will be built.
Forest fires-Forest fires are started by lighting, & strong winds
help to spread the flames . Forest fires destroy immeasurable
amount of valuable timber. They kill not only trees but also other
living things.
Volcanic eruptions-the ashes emitted during the eruption coat
tree leaves, which then interfere with photosynthesis.
4. CONSEQUENCES OF
DEFORESTATION:Extreme temperatures-The forest canopy blocks sun’s rays
during the day and holds the heat in during the night. This
regulates the temperature of the area. The destruction of the
canopy due to deforestation results in extreme temperatures
changes.
Soil erosion-Soil gets exposed to the harsh environment . This
makes the soil loose which may then eroded by wind, rain, or
floods.
Loss of habitat-About 70% of earth’s land animals & plants live
in forests. The most drastic impact of deforestation will be the
loss of habitat for millions of these plant & animal species. It
may lead to the extinction of many of these species.
5. Depletion of the ground water level-Trees help in percolation of
water underground . If trees are cut down, the water level also goes
down causing water scarcity for human use.
Droughts –With increasing human population, more CO2 is being
released into the atmosphere. However, due to deforestation, the
absorption of carbon-dioxide by the plants is reduced. Carbondioxide is a green house gas. It does not allow heat reflected from the
earth’s surface to escape. An excess of CO2 in the atmosphere will
thus lead to global warming. This may lead to reduces rainfall,
resulting in severe droughts.
Desertification-The forest soil is moist which supports the growth of
a wide variety of plants & useful microorganisms. Without forest
cover, the soil becomes dry due to sun’s rays & the growth of
microorganisms is impacted. This affects the fertility of the soil.
Thus, due to deforestation the fertile land gets converted into barren
deserts or wasteland.
