2. Introduction to 5S
• The 5S Technique explains the various steps which should be followed
to increase the efficiency and productivity
• The 5S are as follows
• Seiri – Sorting – It means differentiating the useful items from damaged items
and disposing the damaged items
• Seiton – Set in Order – The useful tools and materials should be arranged in
an order so that they are easily accessible and hence saves time
• Seiso – Shine – Clean the tools and materials as this would avoid them getting
damaged due to dust or rust
• Seiketsu – Standardize – Prepare a standard method of operation so that the
various steps are carried out regularly
• Shitsuke – Sustain – The various steps should be carried out without being
told to do the same explicitly
3. Topic Selected
• In this presentation we are displaying the good 5S practices carried
out in the “Street outside College”
• Our College is located on B road, Chruchgate, Mumbai
• The street which we have selected is “B Road”
• The street starts from Chruchgate station i.e. from IMC Marg and
ends at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Rd
5. • The various types of vehicles which are parked along side the road are
sorted, the two wheelers which include bikes, scooter, cycles are
parked together in one section while the 4 wheelers which include
privately owned vehicles, taxis, delivery vans are parked together
• The 2 sections are not mixed together, this helps in easy access to
each of the vehicle
• This sorting also helps new people who travel to this street to park
their vehicle accordingly
6. • The various cars are parked
in a standard way, all facing
the same direction and
maintaining almost the
same standard gap between
the car parked in front
• This type of standardisation
helps in ease of access and
also in maintaining
discipline
7. Innovate aspects
of application
• The road is clean due to
the regular cleaning facility
also people generally use
the dustbins along the
roads
• This avoids the
accumulation of garbage
and waste along the roads
which might lead to
problems during rainy
season
8. • The residents of the buildings along the road generally park their
vehicles in the same spots, this approach of carrying out the same
activity over a long period of time helps in increasing efficiency and
reducing the time required
• The people also avoid disposing waste and garbage along the street
this helps in keeping the street clean
• Following these just once wont make a difference, hence it can be
seen that these steps are being followed on a regular basis
9. Lessons Learned
• The Team learned that by implementing the 5S technique the
efficiency and productivity of any activity can be increased
• It helps in reducing waste and maintaining good health of the
available tools and materials
• As the tools are kept in the same position every time, it saves times in
having to search for them
• It should however be noted that it is a continuous process and just
carrying out the steps only once will not help
