Twisted BULLYING Samantha Dirschberger
Boys vs. Girls: How they bully differently It is said that boys and girls bully differently Boys are more likely to display physical intimidation while girls are more likely to verbally lash out Boys bully both boys and girls, whereas girls usually just bully other girls Boys are open about their bullying but girls are more secretive making it harder to spot
Boys vs. Girls: How they bully differently cont. Boys are just as likely to cyber bully although girls are more likely to report the bullying to an adult Girls report more positive opinions on how their teachers handle the bullying, and boys think their teachers are doing a poor job of how the bullying is handled
Why do kids bully? Often to seek attention Most likely will continue to bully based off of the reactions of the person they are bullying They believe they are popular and think they have the support of others They think it’s exciting and helps them gain friends
Victims Often have poor social skills Lack the confidence to seek help Blame themselves and believe it is their own fault Are desperate to “fit in” Will most likely not tell anyone
How to deal with bullying First avoid focusing on the shortcomings of the victim Concentrate in the immediate problem Aim for any intervention to help stop the bullying Ensure the bully changes their behavior Ask people to be aware of the situation and to support the victim
Support the victim Make sure they have access to a bully free environment Use reliable peers, teacher aids, and others as supporters Spend time with the victim Use the no blame approach which focuses on seeking the support of the peer group
The Plan The plan is to survey a minimum of 40 West Senior students Survey at least 10 students from each grade to get a more accurate conclusion Ask questions related to being bullied, witnessing bullying, and what can be done about it
The Survey I created a 7 question survey which was given to 40 students at West Senior 10 students from each grade completed the survey to get a more accurate understanding of bullying and how it effects West’s students
The Results The survey consisted of 5 yes or no questions and 2 short answer questions After surveying 40 students at West Senior, about ½ of them claimed to have been bullied About 95% of the students said they have witnessed bullying About 10% of the students believe that West has a bullying problem
The Results Cont. Students were then asked if they thought bullies bully to make themselves feel better and because of jealousy, the results showed that all but 6 students answered yes Also all but 3 students believe that boys and girls bully differently
The Results Cont. When asked what the most common form of bullying was, the majority answered cyber bullying because people may feel more confident when they are hidden behind a computer screen
What Can Be Done? The last question asked what could be done about the bullying in our school Answers included standing up for the victim, using the “Let us Know” box, learn to accept people for who they are, more communication, stricter rules, tell adults, and some people believe that West does a good job and handling bullying situations
Why I chose this topic I chose to focus on the bullying portion of Twisted because I believe that it is something that most people can relate to and are aware of but may not really know how it effects people and how many people are involved
