3. Session description
Tracking the Discourses of Coaching and Mentoring
Professor Bob Garvey
The way we talk about things influences how we understand and how we
practice. We all have a discourse or life narrative which guides us. Argyris
(1974) put forward the notions of „theory in use and espoused theory‟. When applied to
coaching and mentoring literature versus practice, there seems to be an inconsistency of
what is said and what is done. There are many explanations for this: the complex history of
C&M; the variety of contexts and purposes for C&M and the rise of the notion of
„professionalization‟ to mention a few. This keynote tracks the discourses of coaching and
mentoring and asks „is the espoused theory the same as the used theory?‟ Some may not
like the results!
Do your clients fall in love with you? What is intimacy?
How does the forming of a more "intimate" relationship
impact on the effectiveness of the coaching and
mentoring relationship?
Lis Merrick and Paul Stokes
This interactive session will present a definition of intimacy and some dimensions of
intimacy in a coaching and mentoring relationship which have been informed both by
literature and research findings. These are presented as one framework for
understanding the impact of different levels and forms of intimacy on the effectiveness
of a developmental dialogue.
This topic is new and exciting for the coaching and mentoring world as the concept of
"intimacy" is so often tainted with sexual overtones and the profession tends to shun
discussion of it. What the research seeks to do is to take the lid off some of this
suppression and take a direct and fresh look at this fascinating topic of mental
closeness within a learning relationship.
Any practising coach and mentor will be interested in bringing their experiences of
intimacy with their clients into this stimulating debate and comparing and contrasting
these with the presented research and findings.
4. Habits of World Class People and what you can learn from them
Simon Hartley
What differentiate world class people from their peers? What are the traits,
habits and characteristics which are common to world class people who are
at the pinnacle of their professions? How do world class people think, make decisions,
approach challenges and setbacks?
To find the answer Simon spent several years interviewing a wide range of people (chef,
Olympic athlete, barista, adventure racer, mountaineer…) at the top of their profession to
identify those traits, habits and characteristics which are common to them all.
During this session, Simon will share the 8 key characteristics that he discovered and explain
how we can apply them to our work, business and lives.
Organisational Performance Improvement through
Coaching Conversations
Vincent Traynor and Carmel Millar
Over the last 18 months, Surrey County Council has achieved significant
performance improvement through a development programme run by PB Coaching.
The impact on people has been amazing - 95% would recommend it - and the impact on the
organisation is tangible, with key stakeholders noticing a demonstrable shift in performance.
At its heart is an advanced coach training course which gives people the skills and confidence
to coach each other for performance improvement. We have built on this by embedding
honest, coaching conversations into the fabric of the organisation - such as how to deal with
key projects and how key stakeholder groups relate to each other - to take performance
improvement to the next level.
In this presentation Vincent and Carmel will share their methods and evaluation data together
with the key lessons and emerging issues for both of their organisations.
5. Powerful Interventions for Different Team Types
Lynn Scott and Lois Burton
This interactive session outlines how coaches can support the development of high potential
and transformational teams through their coaching work – even when they are only working
with one member of the team. It will also help coaches identify their own areas for
development as team coaches.
Our unique Transforming Teams model – find out about dysfunctional teams, resistant
teams, high potential teams….. and their readiness (or not) for team coaching
o Strategies for working with coachees whose teams may be at any one of these stages
o Experience a short Transforming Teams exercise
