What is digital citizenship? Process that helps people understand what technology users should know about using the internet and other sources of technology
Why teach digital citizenship? Helps prepare users for advances in technology for the future Teaches the proper use of technology to our future generation  Appropriate vs. inappropriate technology use
9 elements that make up digital citizenship Digital access- full electronic participation in society Digital commerce- electronic buying and selling of goods  Digital communication- exchange of information Digital literacy- process of teaching and learning about technology Digital etiquette- electronic standards of procedures Digital law- responsibility for one’s actions and deeds Digital rights and responsibilities- freedoms extended to everyone in the technology world Digital health and wellness- physical and physiological well being in the technology world  Digital security- precautions to guarantee safety
How to teach digital citizenship in the classroom Four stage technology learning framework Awareness Understanding Using technology in the most appropriate way Deliberation	 Teaching framework was devised by Mike Ribble
Examples of technology use
Tips for parents and teens Kids are our future- creators Everything happens in an anonymous audience and environment Anything posted on the internet last forever Information can be controlled and copied Consequences
Importance of teaching digital citizenship Students need to be taught that social networks and freedom of speech comes with responsibilities Bullying can take place online If students were taught earlier, they would understand the huge responsibility that comes with using technology Report inappropriate material
Conclusion  Parents and teachers responsibility to enforce and monitor internet activity of children  Teachers can do different activities to show proper behavior online and useful ways to use technology
