Teaching beginners without
        translation

Arguments against using
         translation
• More English input and as a result, more
  student output
• Students are trained to “think” in English
• Some concepts are hard to translate in one
word, but from a context they are clear
• Translation might be considered as a waste of
valuable lesson time: students expect a lot of
  English, especially in a non-English
  environment

For successful presentation you should:

• Create a clear context
• Use visuals
• Base the presentation on what students know
(ex. Past Simple on the basis of Present Simple)
• Use simple language (Level +1)
• Tolerate errors
• Allow the use of Russian occasionally
• Encourage students to use English and praise
  them for their efforts

• Use repetitive phrases for instructions
• Teach students a range of classroom language, leave
the posters with useful classroom language on the
  walls

  simple (Level+1)
• Demonstrate how to do activities, use your body
  language

Pictures to illustrate instructions

Possible problems and solutions

 • Longer time is spent on • Use visuals
clarifying language • Use concise language
                             • Use a clear context

 • Students’ expectations • Create a stress-free
   and fears environment
                             • Praise students
