The 2001 Gujarat earthquake occurred on January 26th and lasted over two minutes. The epicenter was near the village of Chobari in Kutch District, Gujarat, India. It was between a 7.6 and 7.7 magnitude quake and caused significant damage. Over 12,000 people were killed in Kutch, hundreds of villages were flattened, and over a million structures were damaged or destroyed, including many historic buildings. The epicenter was about 9 km southsouthwest of the village chobari in
bhachau taluka of kutch district of
Gujarat , India .The earthquake
reached a magnitude of between 7.6
and 7.7 on the moment magnitude
scale and had a maximum felt
intensity of X (Intense) on the mercali

situated only 20 kilometers (12 mi) from the
epicenter, was devastated. Considerable damage also
occurred in Bhachau and Anjar with hundreds of
villages flattened in Taluka of Anjar, Bhuj &
Bhachau. Over a million structures were damaged or
destroyed, including many historic buildings and
tourist attractions. The quake destroyed around 40%
of homes, eight schools, two hospitals and 4 km of
road in Bhuj and partly destroyed the city's
historic Swaminarayan temple and historic fort as
well Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal.
7. • In Ahmedabad, Gujarat's commercial capital ith a
population of 5.6 million, as many as 50 multistoried buildings collapsed and several hundred
people were killed. Total property damage was
estimated at $5.5 billion and rising. In Kutch, the
quake destroyed about 60% of food and water
supplies and around 258,000 houses - 90% of the
district's housing stock. The biggest set back was
the total demolition of the Bhuj Civil hospital.
The Indian military provided emergency support
which was later augmented by the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Society. A temporary Red Cross hospital remained
in Bhuj to provide care while a replacement
hospital was built.

The earthquake which struck India's
western State of Gujarat at 08:46 local time
on 26 January 2001 - India's Republic Day
holiday - measured 6.9 on the Richter
scale and lasted about 110 seconds. It was
the most powerful earthquake to strike
India in half a century. The effect was
devastating, widespread and the impact of
the quake was felt in distant locations
across northern India, in Pakistan,
Bangladesh and western Nepal.

9. REHABILITATION OF PLANT
The scope of the Project comprises assistance for
rehabilitating, reconstruction or new construction
of: 1 immediate social safety nets; 2 power sector;
3 urban and rural infrastructure such as rural
roads, village basic services and public buildings;
4 residential houses;5 regional, village and
municipal water supply, 6 sewerage and solid
waste collection and disposal; livelihoods, 7 longer
term disaster management infrastructure, facilities
and human resources, and 8 implementation
support -project management consultants, design
and supervision consultants, benefit monitoring,
livelyhood specialists and other implementation
support.

The original scope of the Project was for
$500 million of ADB loan and included
$150 million for support to the Satte's
urban housing program. However
subsequently, the State was able to secure
concessional funds from the World Bank
and canceled $150 million. Once all works
were awarded and commitments were
finalized a further $12 million was
cancelled and the current loan amount is
$138 million.
