The need and demand for higher education in Saudi Arabia has grown rapidly during the last few years, owing to
its emergence and long term plan to become a knowledge-based economy.
Market opportunity
• The population growth in Saudi Arabia has been averaging between 2.5 - 3% for several years, where 30% of the
population is in the age group of 18 - 20, thereby transforming an increasing number of student enrolments at all
education levels.
• The number of high school graduates in the Kingdom increased by 443% between 1993 and 2008. It is anticipated that
enrolments in higher education will grow at a CAGR of around 9% during 2010 – 2014.
• Students going abroad for studies have significantly increased during the last few years. Between 2006 – 2010, the
CAGR recorded that the number of students studying abroad was around 44%, which was one of the highest in the
world.
• Saudi Arabia has sent more than 109,000 students abroad to study under
the King Abdullah Foreign Scholarship Programme, and almost 12,000
Saudi Arabian students are independently paying for their studies abroad.
• While many students elect to continue their education abroad,
Saudi Arabia has announced plans to continue the rapid expansion
of higher education facilities as part of its ninth five-year development
plan for 2010-2014.
• The number of students enrolled in the Kingdom’s universities for
higher learning rose by over 20% between 2006 – 2010 and reached
an estimated 780,000 in 2010.
