Global Warming or Climate Change?

 Global Warming
Overall warming of the planet, based on the average
 temperature over the entire surface

 Climate Change
Changes in regional climate characteristics including
temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind and severe
 weather events
Global warming causes changes in climate
Causes

 Increase in atmospheric CO2 and other
greenhouse gases during the industrial era,
  caused by human activities.

Human Activities Responsible for Warming

 Burning of fossil fuels
 Mining of coal and oil
 Deforestation
 Carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plants
 CO2 emitted from cars, aero planes
 CO2 from buildings
 Methane
 Increased Water vapor
 Nitrous oxide
Effects of Global Warming

 Rising Sea level
 Increased temperature
 Habitat damage and species affected
 Changes in Water Supply
Climate Change: Mitigation & Adaptation

 Mitigation
 Actions to reduce greenhouse gases

 Adaptation
Actions taken to minimize the adverse impacts of
 climate change
UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol

 UNFCCC: the basis for concerted international
action to mitigate climate change and adapt to
  its impacts

With an objective to
Stabilize GHG concentrations at levels that
    prevent dangerous anthropogenic
    interference with the climate system
  Ensure that economic development proceeds
in a sustainable manner and food production
    is not threatened
Kyoto Protocol

Kyoto Protocol: an international and legally
binding agreement to reduce greenhouse
gases worldwide
Adopted in Kyoto (Japan) in 1997, took
effect with support of 141 nations
Enforced on 16th February 2005
38 Annex I countries (mostly industrialized)
have ratified the treaty and are legally
bound to reduce their green house gas
emission (GHG) by 5.2% before 2012
Targets set for each nations based on their
1990 level
Available Market Based Mechanisms

(i) Emission Trading: Allow the developed countries to
transfer emissions credits to each other

(ii) Joint Implementation (JI): Implemented between
two developed (Annex 1) countries. Credits
obtained by investing countries are offset by
debits to the country hosting the Project

(iii) The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

 Flexible mechanism allows emission reduction
projects in developing countries to earn certified
emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to
  one tone of CO2
Forestry Sector

 Forests can act as both a sink (absorbing emissions)
and as a sources of emission when trees are felled.

 20% of the global greenhouse gas emissions is
caused by deforestation alone, forestry sector has
the potential of offering 20% of the global climate
  change solution.
Scope: Afforestation & Reforestation
 Afforestation is the direct human-induced conversion of
land that has not been forested for a period of at least
50 years to forested land through planting, seeding and/
or the human- induced promotion of natural seed
  sources ・

 Reforestation is the direct human-induced conversion of
non- forested land to forested land through planting,
seeding and/or the human-induced promotion of
natural seed sources, on land that was forested but that
has been converted to non-forested land. For the first
commitment period, reforestation activities will be
limited to reforestation occurring on those lands that
did not contain forest on 31 December 1989
Types of Afforestation & Reforestation Project Activities

 Small Scale A & R project activities:
Threshold limit of net anthropogenic GHG
removals by sinks of 8ktCO2per year
 Implemented by low income communities.

 Large Scale A & R project activities:
No threshold limit of net anthropogenic GHG
 removals by sinks.
Opportunities

 CDM help generate funds Afforestation /
  reforestation activity
 The funds can be used for raising and maintaining
  plantations
 Gujarat has large tracts of waste land which can
  be undertaken under plantation activity
 CDM funds help reduce project cost through
possible CERs sale and add to income generation
  of parties involved
Initiatives of Rasna Group in this Sector
 CDM Discussion with the Government of Gujarat development
  of plantation based project
 MoU signed during Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2009

  • 13. Human Activities Responsible for Warming  Burning of fossil fuels  Mining of coal and oil  Deforestation  Carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plants  CO2 emitted from cars, aero planes  CO2 from buildings  Methane  Increased Water vapor  Nitrous oxide
  • 14. Effects of Global Warming  Rising Sea level  Increased temperature  Habitat damage and species affected  Changes in Water Supply
  • 15. Climate Change: Mitigation & Adaptation  Mitigation Actions to reduce greenhouse gases  Adaptation Actions taken to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change
  • 16. UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol  UNFCCC: the basis for concerted international action to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts With an objective to Stabilize GHG concentrations at levels that prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system Ensure that economic development proceeds in a sustainable manner and food production is not threatened
  • 17. Kyoto Protocol Kyoto Protocol: an international and legally binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gases worldwide Adopted in Kyoto (Japan) in 1997, took effect with support of 141 nations Enforced on 16th February 2005 38 Annex I countries (mostly industrialized) have ratified the treaty and are legally bound to reduce their green house gas emission (GHG) by 5.2% before 2012 Targets set for each nations based on their 1990 level
  • 18. Available Market Based Mechanisms (i) Emission Trading: Allow the developed countries to transfer emissions credits to each other (ii) Joint Implementation (JI): Implemented between two developed (Annex 1) countries. Credits obtained by investing countries are offset by debits to the country hosting the Project (iii) The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
  • 19. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)  Flexible mechanism allows emission reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tone of CO2
  • 20. Forestry Sector  Forests can act as both a sink (absorbing emissions) and as a sources of emission when trees are felled.  20% of the global greenhouse gas emissions is caused by deforestation alone, forestry sector has the potential of offering 20% of the global climate change solution.
  • 21. Scope: Afforestation & Reforestation  Afforestation is the direct human-induced conversion of land that has not been forested for a period of at least 50 years to forested land through planting, seeding and/ or the human- induced promotion of natural seed sources ・  Reforestation is the direct human-induced conversion of non- forested land to forested land through planting, seeding and/or the human-induced promotion of natural seed sources, on land that was forested but that has been converted to non-forested land. For the first commitment period, reforestation activities will be limited to reforestation occurring on those lands that did not contain forest on 31 December 1989
  • 22. Types of Afforestation & Reforestation Project Activities  Small Scale A & R project activities: Threshold limit of net anthropogenic GHG removals by sinks of 8ktCO2per year Implemented by low income communities.  Large Scale A & R project activities: No threshold limit of net anthropogenic GHG removals by sinks.
  • 23. Opportunities  CDM help generate funds Afforestation / reforestation activity  The funds can be used for raising and maintaining plantations  Gujarat has large tracts of waste land which can be undertaken under plantation activity  CDM funds help reduce project cost through possible CERs sale and add to income generation of parties involved
  • 24. Initiatives of Rasna Group in this Sector  CDM Discussion with the Government of Gujarat development of plantation based project  MoU signed during Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2009 Snap at the time of inking MoU with Mr J K Vyas, Director (Environment) in presence of Shri Mangubhai Patel, Hon.
