of 40 and 50.
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Many people mistakenly believe that RA is an older persons disease however, it typically
appears between the ages of 25 and 50. The most common symptoms include feeling weak
and tired, fever, weight loss, inflammation of the joints and joint pain. Although, there is no cure,
the disease can be managed effectively if diagnosed and treated early.
What Is Rheumatoid Factor?
When you’re being tested for rheumatoid arthritis, the doctor is testing for the presence of
something called rheumatoid factor. Here’s a brief explanation of what rheumatoid factor really
is.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Definition
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease where the white cells and antibody
proteins in your blood, that usually fight infections, attack flexible (synovial) joints instead. This
causes chronic inflammation (pain, heat, swelling and tenderness) of the lining of the joints and
of the sheaths around tendons. Hands, feet and knees are usually affected with stiffness in the
joints, especially in the morning. Eventually, the inflammation may lead to a thinning of the
cartilage covering the ends of your bones which may wear away the bone. RA can affect other
parts of your body, such as organs, but this is less common.
Diagnosing Rheumatoid Arthritis
It is a clinical diagnosis based on symptoms, physical examination, X-rays and labs. However
the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European League Against Rheumatism
(EULAR) use classification criteria for the purpose of rheumatoid arthritis research. Diagnosis
and long-term management are usually performed by rheumatologists who are experts in joint,
muscle and bone diseases.

disease but there are ways to manage it. It can be a disabling and painful condition but
adequate treatment can help prevent substantial loss of functioning and mobility.
Gary Owens, MD, Talks About Trends in RA Management
Gary Owens, MD, Gary Owens Associates, says that trends in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
management are coming from the new 2012 American College of Rheumatology guidelines that
call for earlier and more aggressive treatment of new patients as well as patients who are not
