TAE KWON DO
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the
national sport of South Korea. In Korean, tae
means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon
means "to strike or break with fist"; and do
means "way", "method", or "art". It combines
combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise,
and in some cases meditation and philosophy. Since taekwondo is
developed in several different kwans, there are several different
expressions of taekwondo philosophy.
The Belt Colours and their meanings
White: Signifies innocence.
Yellow:Signifies earth.
Green:Signifies the plant's growth.
Blue:Signifies heaven.
Red:Signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and
warning the opponent to stay away.
Black:Opposite to white, therefore, it signifies maturity and proficiency in
Tae Kwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness
and fear. It takes about six years to get a black belt.
In Japanese Martial Art terminology (such as in Karate, Judo, or Aikido),
people practice in a Doja. In Taekwondo, the Korean term is a Dojang.
The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is to build a more peaceful world. To
accomplish this goal, Tae Kwon Do begins with the foundation, the
individual. The Art strives to develop the character, personality, and
positive moral and ethical traits in each practitioner.
