The SHIELD Mentor Program aims to address challenges facing youth today through effective mentoring. Research shows mentoring is associated with greater academic achievement, social skills, and positive outcomes. The program seeks to match youth with community mentors to help guide them towards opportunities and goals. It aims to reduce high-risk behaviors and the dropout rate in Guilford County schools through character building, decision making, conflict resolution and social skills development.

2. Our community must develop
tomorrow’s leaders for a challenging
future. Yet, youth today face new and
growing challenges just to survive and
become self‐sufficient adults.

3.  Effective,
high-quality and enduring mentoring is
associated with the capacity for youth to engage in
high-quality social relationships, to have greater
academic achievement, school engagement, school
adjustment, and to view their futures more positively
(Rhodes, Spencer, Keller, Liang, & Noam, 2006).
 Prevents and reduces high risk behaviors such as
adolescent aggression, and increases interpersonal
skills, self esteem and more positive long-term
outcomes (Resnick, 2000)
 Decreasesaffiliation with violent peers, improves
school achievement, and contributes to abstention
from drugs and alcohol (Rhodes et al, 2000; Sipe, 2002)

5. The North Carolina State Department of Public InstrucEon
released its 2007‐08 Annual Dropout Report indicaEng that:
 Guilford County Schools’ (GCS) dropout rate increased from
2.99 percent in 2006‐07 to 3.31 percent in 2007 ‐ 2008, or
about 760 students.
 Statewide, data analysis found that 32% dropouts le2 during
the 9th grade year a2er the transi7on from middle school to
high school, while the number decreases to 25 percent in the
10th grade year and 22 percent in the 11th grade (h[p://www.gcsnc.com/

6. In a 2007‐2008 report of Guilford County Schools’
violence suspensions, The N.C. Department of Public
InstrucEon reported that:
 386 acts of violence were reported in high schools
 182 reported acts of violence were reported in middle
schools

7. On average, one in six N.C. high school
students receives an out‐of‐school
short‐term suspension each year. 760
students dropped out of Guilford
County schools last year, seriously
disadvantaging them to reaching their
potenEal.

8. Mentoring is the act in which an adult is
linked with a young person to assist them in
being more successful in what ever goals
they have established. Mentoring can
actually posiEvely transform the way a
person views themselves, their lives and
their potenEal for greatness. Mentoring
Changes Lives!

Promote a mentoring spirit while matching
youth with community role models. Youth
live in a world full of wonderful
opportunities; the goal is to give them
proper guidance to obtain them.
