1. 2013 Toyota RAV4
Toyota unveiled its new 2013 RAV4 EV on the twenty sixth annual Electric Car Symposium right here and
stated the automotive will probably be priced from $50,610 when it goes on sale in late summer season
in four California markets. The base sticker includes an $810 delivery charge.
The RAV4 EV, which uses a 115kW electric drive system and battery pack equipped by Tesla Motors, can
be sold initially in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Space, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego,
Toyota said. The automaker plans to sell about 2,600 RAV4 EVs over the next three years.
The newest version of the RAV4 EV has a driving vary between charges of round a hundred miles and
takes about six hours to recharge on a 240V/40A charger.
Toyota said the RAV4 EV's driving performance, dynamics and cargo capacity are equal to or exceed that
of the gasoline-powered RAV4 V6. Toyota stated the front-wheel-drive RAV4 EV can speed up from zero
to 60 in 7.zero seconds and has a prime speed of 100 mph.
The electrical model of the RAV4 gets a brand new front bumper, grille, mirrors and rear spoiler, with a
smoother underbody to maximize airflow. The RAV4 EV additionally features LED projector headlamps,
daytime running lights and rear combination lights. Toyota mentioned the automotive shall be supplied
in three exterior colors - Blizzard White Pearl, Shoreline Blue Pearl and Traditional Silver Metallic.
2. Among the interior highlights are a Neutron material with blue accents for the seat inserts and door
trim, and an eight-inch capacitive touchscreen that shows navigation, telematics and EV drive
information.
The RAV EV is being assembled at Toyota's plant in Woodstock, Ontario.
These would be the most unsatisfying spy photos we have posted all yr, as a result of we never received
a take a look at the front of this camouflaged crossover SUV. There's little doubt it is the redesigned
2013 Toyota RAV4, though -- based on its shape and general proportions, and given that we have been
proper close to Toyota's North American headquarters in Torrance, California. Sadly, we had been on a
good schedule and could not deviate from our supposed left turn, because the RAV4 mule turned right.
In these pictures, though, you possibly can see that Toyota has lastly nixed the RAV's signature aspect-
hinged tailgate and rear-mounted spare tire in favor of a lighter, possibly energy-operated overhead
liftgate and presumably a floor/undercarriage-mounted spare. Rear suspension stays independent... no
surprise there.
It is attention-grabbing to speculate what else Toyota has planned for the fourth-gen RAV4. Adoption of
the six-velocity automatic transmission throughout the board is a certainty, we would say, instead of
right now's four- and five-velocity automatics. The 2.5-liter engine should proceed on with various
upgrades, however we wouldn't be shocked to see Toyota reduce the 3.5-liter V6 fully -- good as it is --
for reasons of gasoline economic system and cost. Then again, even with the present 5-pace
computerized, the V6 returns 26 mpg on the highway, so maybe there isn't any motive to give up on the
concept of a quick RAV4 just yet.
Along with that, we're anticipating to see the deletion of the third-row seat option (that just about
nobody buys for the current mannequin) and the arrival of Entune and a camera system on par with
what Ford and Honda are providing within the Escape and CR-V. We'll know extra when the 2013 RAV4
makes its probable debut at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show.
The RAV4 EV is an all-electric version of Toyota's compact RAV4 crossover with a Tesla-sourced battery
and powertrain. It is available only in California, and owes its existence largely to a mandate requiring
15.4 percent of new automobiles sold in the Golden State 2025 must be plug-ins, electrics or fuel cell
vehicles by 2025.
Aside from a few minor styling tweaks, from the outside the RAV4 EV would seem to be a dead ringer
for the gas-powered ‘ ute. The differences become apparent when one gets inside and twists the key -
instead of firing up an internal combustion engine, this action turns on a Tesla-designed 115kW electric
drive system.
This motor produces 154 horsepower and a strong 273 lb-ft of torque, good for a zero-to-60 mph sprint
of just seven seconds in performance-oriented Sport mode. The default drive setting, Normal mode, is
optimized to maximize driving range and limits torque to 218 lb-ft. This adds 1.6 seconds to the zero-to-
60 mph sprint.
3. When the time comes to recharge, there are two options. Standard mode charges to 35 kWh for an
estimated 92 mile range, while Extended mode charges to 41.8 kWh for 113 miles. Toyota claims that
Standard mode will prolong the charging life of the lithium-ion battery, which is covered by a warranty
of eight years or 100,000 miles. Charging takes about six hours with a 240v charging station that adds
$1,590 (plus installation) to the botton line; an 120V emergency charger is included as standard but this
unit takes 44 hours to fully charge the vehicle.
Notably, the batteries don't impinge on cargo space thanks to their placement low and to the center of
the vehicle. That means that 36.4 cubic inches are available behind the rear seats, while a full 73 cubes
can be had with the rear seats folded.
Exterior revisions compared to the gas-powered RAV4 include a revised front bumper, grill, side mirrors
and rear spoiler in addition to a special underbody design that maximizes air flow around the vehicle.
These changes help cut drag to 0.30 Cd, making it the most aerodynamic crossover in the world.
Headlights, taillights and daytime running lights are all upgraded to LED units.
The interior benefits from blue-accented "Neutron" fabric on the seat inserts and door trim as well as an
eight-inch capacitive touch screen that displays navigation, telematics and battery charge info. Other
changes include a unique instrument panel and a shifter borrowed from the Prius hybrid. In nearly all
other respects the cabin is standard RAV4 fare, meaning it has intuitive controls and an uncluttered
design, though the materials might disappoint some buyers given the EV's price point.
4. Occupant Safety
Standard safety features include dual front, front side and full-length side-curtain airbags in addition to
traction control systems.

considering. If you're just looking for a vehicle with a spacious interior and low energy costs, check out
Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and the Toyota Prius V.
