2. Introduction On January 12, 2010, the country of Haiti experienced a major earthquake that devastated the country. In February 2010, SHRM conducted a poll of its members to find out how SHRM members and their organizations have responded to the earthquake disaster in Haiti. When possible, similar efforts from 2004 (Tsunami in Asia), 2005 (Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans) and 2010 (Earthquake in Haiti) are compared with each other. According to this research, on the average, organizations are matching 100% of employees’ contributions via company-organized donation. 2

Comparison by Organization Sector, Staff Size and Scope of Business Publicly owned for-profit organizations (73%) were more likely to report they are currently providing or have provided assistance to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake disaster compared with privately owned for-profit organizations (39%) and nonprofit organizations (52%). Large-staff-sized organizations (66%) were more likely to have provided assistance to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake disaster than medium-staff-sized organizations (50%) Multinational organizations (74%) were also more likely to have provided assistance to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake disaster compared with nationally based (51%), state-based (35%) and locally based organizations (43%). 4
