Nintendo Wii in the classroom Silkia Cristina Aviles Del Valle
Wii The Wii (ウィー?, pronounced /ˈwiː/, like the pronoun we) is a home video game console released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006. As a seventh-generation console, the Wii primarily competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of the two others. As of May 2010, the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales, and in December 2009 broke the record for best-selling console in a single month in the United States.
Wii A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.
Wii: Advantages in the ESL classroom The price of the system is $199.99 and only one console is necessary for the entire classroom. Students could share the remote of the system but since they have such a low price even student can afford an individual one (or even the school could afford it) ($30.00 remote + nunchuk). And since the Wii is such popular system, most students might have one in their homes. The majority of the students know how the system works because they either have one or have a friend who has one.
It’s a new approach to the classroom and you will captivate students attention. You can see the activity of each student through their Wii characters. The Wii has plenty of games that can be used in an ESL class. The system works as a computer so you could access the internet for any type of information that is needed in the moment. Wii: Advantages in the ESL classroom
The Wii has a “camera” and this feature can be used by students that couldn’t come to school for a virtual lesson . The parental controls of the Wii browser mean that surfing the net will always remain a safe experience. And as I mentioned earlier you can use the Wii as an internet browser and play any online game that you can find! There are plenty of web sites that have educational games. Wii: Advantages in the ESL classroom
The only real disadvantage that one could have with the Wii in the classroom is that any students that has the remote on could change the “page” that is being used for educational purpose and try t change it for a game, internet, or other features of the system. This problem can be minimized by good supervision and a simple rule: don’t touch the remote if it is not your turn! a conflict that may come up from the parents or even other teachers is that they could see it as just a game with no educational opportunities. Wii: Disadvantages
How it can be used in the ESL classroom The Wii has plenty of games that can be used as reinforcement activities in the classroom. It can also be used as special activities or even competitions: spelling bee, memory games among others. The Wii also gives a chance for students to be active in the classroom. It is the only system that is approved by the American Heart Association.
My own opinion on the use of the Wii To be very honest during the research for this presentation I convinced myself of using the Wii in my future classroom. Children today spend approximately 5- 8 hours on video game and this could influence them on buying better games and, by using a system that they are familiar with and like, a teacher can captivate their attention.
My own opinion on the use of the Wii The Wii has plenty of games that can help a student to learn a specific language skill in a different approach(interactive). An example would be the Toy Story games because they have special side missions where you need to write words or even identify an item and this helps them to expand their vocabulary.
