4. Equality Legislation
• The Equality Act 2010 calls these aspects
‘protected characteristics’ and identifies a
further 2 areas.
• Do you know what these are?
• Marriage / civil partnerships
• Pregnancy / maternity
• Plus, Public Sector Equality Duty (April 2011).
5. Ofsted Inspection of Equality
• When Ofsted refers to equality and diversity, it
includes these seven equality strands used by the
Equality & Human Rights Commission.
• AND, it also includes social aspects such as
poverty and deprivation.
Aspiration & Ambition – No one is left behind
• So that makes 10 ‘protected characteristics’!!!
6. Putting That in Context!
• The challenges for us – to embed E&D into all
that you do with your students so that this is
central and fundamental to all you do.
• Embedding E&D within resource development
and design is an integral part of this challenge.
