The Northern Right Whale

2. What they look like?
They are mostly black, with patches of white on its belly. The
head is encrusted with barnacles and patches of hard skin.
They can grow up to 17 m long and weigh between 40 to 80
tonnes.

3. Habitat/Where found?
They are found mainly in the Atlantic Ocean, off the eastern
coast of North America.

4. What do they eat?
They eat plankton, krill and small crustaceans, which they filter
through their mouth from the water. They like to skim feed near
the surface.

5. Babies (Calves)
Female Northern Right Whales have 1 calf every 3 to 4 years.
Calves stay with their mother for about 1 year.

6. What are its threats?
The biggest threat to whales is commercial whaling, however hunting of
the Northern Right Whale was banned in 1935. They still risk collisions
with ships and fishing gear because they like to feed near the surface.

7. Protection and Conservation
There are now less then 500 left.
The key things that are being done to help Northern Right
Whales are closing of fishing areas and slowing down ships in
certain areas off the east coast of North America.
