2. Digital imaging, Raster and vector
images.
• Digital imaging is the altering of an
image, either natural or artificial, to create a
meaning for the viewer.
• Vector images are created using mathematical
equations. They are used for simple geometric
shapes such as circles or squares.
• Raster images are created using pixels. The
pixels combined colours and tones will
produce an image.

3. When to use Raster and Vector
images
• Raster images are ideal for natural
photography and images that require complex
colours and tones
• Vector images are images that are used as
logos or typefaces that need to be clear and
detailed or need to be processed by many
different devices.

4. Advantages and disadvantages of
Raster and Vector
• The advantages of Vector images is they are made to remain
clear and detailed when the are enlarged or shrink. The
disadvantage of Vector files is that if they were to be viewed
on a computer they would have to be transferred into pixels,
possibly reducing the quality.
• The advantages of a Raster image is the ability to create
advanced natural photographic images. However just like
vector images, raster images also come with their
disadvantages. They can be a problem because they are
resolution dependent, meaning that if you alter the image it
would reduce the quality dramatically.

5. What is a JPEG
• JPEGs are used for photographic and image
files. The format of JPEG files was developed
specifically to provide a suitable format for the
creation and storage of photographs and
photo realistic images.

6. Explanation of GIF, TIF and JPEG file
formats
• Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a collaboration of
pictures which result in a small motion picture.
• Tagged Image File (TIF) is used as a means of storing images
• Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) is a file format used
to compress images.

7. When each file format should be used
• JPEG files are most commonly used be digital cameras and
other photo capturing devices. It is also used to send image
files over the web.
• GIFs can be used to store low colour data for games.

Used for sharp edge line art.
