2. The word ‘news is written in large font and is the only
text on the page which is written in red. This
automatically draws the attention of the reader
making them stop and read the small text. The small
text gives the website address of kerrang magazine
showing that they don’t just have a magazine, they
have a website and potentially other types of media.
The page has a different colour scheme to the front cover of the magazine which
is new and exciting for the reader. On the front cover and contents page, the main
colours were mainly black, red, and yellow but the colour scheme for this page is
mainly grey with bits of white and pink with a little bit of red as well so the
magazine isn’t completely unrecognizable. Although the readership of Kerrang is
mostly males, the little bit of pink brings an aspect of girliness and therefore
invites girls to also read the magazine attracting a wider audience.
The male is also
looking at the camera
engaging with the
reader. This will
therefore make them
feel like part of the
magazine and as if they
are interacting with the
person. Although the
article is a double page
spread, the actual text
is only on one side of
the page leaving the
‘AFI frontman Davey
Havok’ with a full page
to himself. This shows
that he is very important
as he his dominating a
whole A4 page in the
magazine.
The male character on the page also ties in with the colour scheme
of the magazine. He has a white t-shirt with black and white detail,
black hair with white colouring, and mainly black tattoos with a bit of
red and yellow as well. His appearance is very similar to that of the
stereotype of the male rock star which ties in with the theme of the
magazine being rock related.
The layout of the text is
very tidy which means
that the reader will not
get confused as to
where to read next, and
can just go from one
column to the next.
Each question is in a
separate paragraph so if
the reader wants to look
at a particular question
then they will be able to
find it easily as all of the
questions have a white
background and will
then be a able to read
the answer underneath.
Also, the text is black
against a grey
background making it
clear and easy to read.
The border around the page gives the effect that
it is lights in a dressing room maybe and
therefore also helps females relate to the
magazine. It also ties in with the content with the
interview as it includes a bit about the style and
fashion of the band.
3. The font of the header makes it look like
the writing is out of a newspaper. This is
interesting as it has an older feel to it and
the reader statistics of this magazine
aren’t typical of a person who would read
a newspaper. However, the white on black
on white makes the text stand out.
The splash image has been taken in a studio against a white
background. The make up that she is wearing is quite dark on the
eyes but pale on the rest of the face which is what the make up of a
stereotypical reader of NME magazine would wear. The genre of
music which NME is aimed at is indie rock. We associate this type of
genre with dark clothes, dark hair and eyes, and typical gothic
clothing.
The layout of the
double page spread is
very neat and easy to
read. The columns are
set out neatly making
it easier to see where
to read next after
finishing one column.
The ‘I’ at the very start
of the article instantly
grabs the readers
attention as it is one of
the largest pieces of
text on the page. This
may therefore intrigue
the buyer into reading
the article even if they
had no intention of
reading it and wanted
to skip to the next
page.
Some of the text is written in the same font and colour as the
name of the magazine. This shows that NME have their own
style and therefore if anyone sees this type of writing, they will
automatically associate it with NME. Lily’s name is written in
this font which may mean that whenever the reader sees her
on television etc, they may think of NME.
The date that the
magazine was
issued appears
at the bottom of
each page. This
means that
repeat buyers
know which date
they need if they
have missed an
issued. Although
it is only in small
print, people who
read the
magazine a lot
will know that it
is there and
therefore will be
able to find it if
they are
specifically
looking for it.
Lily is wearing the very stereotypical ‘hipster’ clothing which is
now associated with older teens. This therefore makes the
magazine appealing to this age group of women broadening the
audience of the magazine. It also catches the male gaze as she
is very attractive and quite provocative in the way in which she is
stood. This therefore makes it also appeal to teenage boys.
4. The name of the band
which the interview is
about is at the top of the
page in bold black
writing. This could attract
readers, as if a person
who knows the band
well is flicking through
and sees the name, they
are more likely to read
the article, whereas if
someone doesn’t know
the band but wants to
read the article, then it
tells them who the band
is about.
In this double page spread, there is a lot more text than what was in the kerrang
and NME magazines. The text takes up about a page and a half and is in quite a
small font, showing that Q have a lot of information to offer. The columns are set
out very neatly, and a different colour has been used for the question and answer in
the interview. This makes it clear the different parts of the interview. Therefore, if
the reader wants to find a certain part of the interview which they have maybe seen
on the front cover, they will be able to find it easily just by looking at the questions.
The date which the
magazine was issued is
at the bottom of the
page. This means that if
repeat buyers miss an
issue, they can easily
locate which issue they
have missed and either
purchase it in a store if
it is still out, or off of the
internet.
The subscription at the bottom of the magazine shows
readers where to go if they want to subscribe to the
magazine every week. It is at the bottom so when people
have finished reading the page, they like what they have
read, then will see the subscription and will be more likely
to subscribe if they have read an interview first.
By using different
colours in the quote,
it allows it to stand
out from the
background of the
image. Also,
because it is next to
the image of the
male, it shows that
he is the one who
said this showing
that the interview is
mainly about him.
The composition of
the photograph also
shows this. He is the
only person out of
the band in the shot,
and all of the lights
are pointing on him
showing that he is
the most important
and everybody
should be looking at
him.
The name and logo of the magazine is at the
bottom of each page to remind readers of which
magazine they have bought, and if they like the
content and style they know the name to buy it
again. Also, if the reader saw the logo for Q
again, they would instantly recognise it.
