In our film, we start with a flash back to establish the story and give
the audience some background information about what is happening
in the film. This is similar to some other films of the same genre that
start with a flashback such as, Insidious. In Insidious, it shows a boy
sleeping and then goes through the house to show a ghost, which
gives the audience a clue as to what the film is going to be about. In
the Flashback in our film, a girl is murdered and her ring can be
seen on the ground, this sets up the story for the rest of the film.
This happens before the credits to grab the audiences attention and
make them want to keep watching. Many Horror films start off with
a flashback such as Drag me to hell and House of Wax.
At the beginning of the film, a girl is murdered, this Is typical of
the horror film genre, as it is violent and scary. Also, the
beginning is in black and white, and the shots are slowed down
to make it look more scary and created tension, other horror
films use black and white to create tension such as Human
Centipede 2, where the whole film is in black and white. After the
credits, the girls are telling scary stories which also adds to the
tension of the story and makes it scary which fits with the horror
genre.
In our film, we use different camera angles to make the film
scarier, for example in the flashback at the beginning, we use a
canted angle to suggest that something is not right, this is similar to
many other horror films such as insidious, where canted angles are
used throughout the film to create suspense and show the audience
that something is not right. Also, the shots at the beginning are slow
which creates suspense and fits with the horror genre.
We use non- diegetic music in the film, it is
used in the beginning to add to the suspense
and make It more scary. This is similar to most
horror films where music is used to create
suspense, for example in Jaws. Also, in the
other scene, we use ambient sound to help set
the scene.
In the film, we use props that are stereotypical to horror films, for
example, at the beginning of the film, a hammer is seen and used as a
weapon. In horror films, everyday objects are often used as weapons
such as in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where a chainsaw is used.
Also, the location of the flashback is stereotypical to the genre As it is
set in some woods, this is similar to other films of the genre such
as, Cabin Fever and The Last House on the Left.
In the film, the font used for the opening credits
wasn’t a font that is typical of the genre, most
horror films use red font, for example Insidious.
We decided to use a plain font to keep the focus
on the story of the film.
