Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to travel to space. She trained as an astronaut and went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992, conducting experiments in weightlessness and helping deploy satellites that still orbit Earth today. Jemison had a background as a physicist and engineer, becoming an expert in space travel and making important contributions to space missions through her work as a NASA specialist.
