Editor's Notes
Hi Everyone, my name is Steve Theodorovich and I am an Account Manager for BluNet Web Design. I am hear to present to you a presentation on Social Media: Online Marketing Solutions. Today we will be discussing how BluNet can help Northwestern Technologies efficiently promote it’s brand using the most exciting communications platform in the world today; Social Media.
On the agenda for today will include the following topics:What is Social Media? The emergence of Social MediaCurrent Social Media Landscape within the technology industryOpportunities & Benefits of using Social MediaConclusion. Is Social Media hear to stay?
What is Social Media? The best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication. Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television, but you have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter. Social Media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate as well and in many cases, your input is immediate!Over the past few years social media sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube and others have revolutionized the way businesses go about networking.
The invention of the internet has monumentally revolutionized how people interact with each other. From the first email that was sent back in 1971 to the many different social networking sites available today, the integration of technology with communication has become a prominent focus of the new digital age and it continues to evolve. One of the first forms of Social Media that effected the Technology sector was called the Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and was introduced in 1978. These were online meeting places that allowed users to communicate with a central system where they could download files or games and post messages to other users. This format continued to gain popularity throughout the ‘80s and well into the ‘90s. The first social networking website was SixDegrees which let people make profiles and connect with friends in 1997. From there social networking has evolved even further BS continues to impact the Technology sector with sites like Friendster, Myspace and Facebook.
Here is a bar chart showing the breakdown of user comparisons of Social Networks over the years. As you can see, the shear number of Social Network users alone validates the importance that Northwestern Technology should utilize this marketing sector. BluNet is the company that can help make this a seamless process for you.
Social media as we know it -- Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. -- is only 16 years old, and yet it feels as if they are permanent fixtures in our lives that have been with us forever. Social media is a form of mass media, and it can be used for interactive, informational, educational or promotional purposes. It can take many forms, including Internet forums, blogs, wikis, podcasts, photograph or picture sharing, video rating and social bookmarking. These formats are all used today to promote brand for companies within the Northwest Technologies market sector.
Today, Social Media continues to shape the landscape of the technology industry. Here are some examples of what other technology companies are doing with social media.OraclePrior to running Oracle Open World, Oracle changed its home page for two weeks. The page asked for consumer feedback; community involvement was important enough to interrupt the normal flow.MobileDemandA recent Wall Street Journal article described how Matt Miller, the founder of rugged tablet computer maker MobileDemand, demonstrated the resilience of his company’s handheld computers. Instead of writing about how his design enabled his product to survive crash landings, he created videos for YouTube. In one clip, his computer withstood sub-zero temperatures, while in another the device was “accidentally” dropped off the side of a mountain, and kept on working.Dell IdeaStormThis website launched by Dell on February 16, 2007 was created with the intent to allow Dell "to gauge which ideas are most important and most relevant to" the public. After registering, users are able to add articles, promote them, demote them and comment on them. The result is that it has had close to 500 different ideas implemented by Dell on various projects and products. Some of the ideas resulted in Dell's first backlit keyboard, wider sales for Dells in electronics stores, and rack-mounted blade workstations.
In brief, social media is really about two things; raising awareness of your company and tapping into relevant online conversations that affect your company and its technology. From an external viewpoint, some of the major benefits of using Social Media for marketing include increased awareness to the organization, increased traffic to the website, and the ability to monitor conversations about the organization. Some of the key benefits from a company’s internal perspective include improved employee engagement, improved internal collaboration, and creating a two-way dialogue with senior executives. While this is just a short list of the many benefits of utilizing Social Media for overall brand marketing, all of these benefits work towards the same goal which is to lead to an increase of business. BluNet Design is an expert within Social Media marketing with the knowledge to design, test, and implement a working marketing plan for Northwest Technology in order to guarantee brand success in today’s tech market.
According to a 2009 report by Nielson “In the U.S. alone, total minutes spent on social networking sites has increased 83 percent year-over-year.”This leads us to the ‘million dollar’ question, “Is Social Media really here to stay?” . Here are some additional statistics that will help prove that it’s not only here to stay but that it is a resource that must be considered and adapted into the Northwest Technologies business plan.88% of marketers are using social media67% of global web-users visit social network sites10% of all time spent on the internet is on social media sites77% of all active internet users regularly read blogs
Today, when such a large percent of the technology audience is using social media to research just about everything, drawing online attention to your Northwest Technology and learning about your audience’s needs through these networks, is clearly one of the keys success. Will you be ON or OFF the radar when that next potential customer comes looking for technology services via social media? With over 15 years of building successful business relationships, BluNet Design is a leader in the field of Web Design & Technology.
