What kind of media
institution might
distribute your
media product and
why?
In the industry, magazine distribution is very important as it is the link between
you the producer and the audience who pick them up on the stands. It is better
to have your magazine distributed by companies that work with similar
magazines because they have a background knowledge of how to market
magazines like mine in the best way.
I have researched two high profitable and successful magazine distributors
which are Bauer and IPC media. The two companies could distribute my
magazine in the best way, however I am going to research them both in order to
find out which one suits my magazine more and which one could make my
magazine more successful when competing against the other similar magazines
out there on the stands.
MEDIAI researched ICP Media in more depth and discovered that the company is well
known across the industry. ICP Media distribute more than 60 media brands on
multiple platforms, print, online, mobile and many more. They are the UK’s leading
magazine publisher with there audience being 26million UK adults and nearly two
thirds of them being women.They distribute different categories across the board
from TV guides to fashion magazines, when it comes to music they are associated
with NME and Uncut.
NME reach over 1.1 million music fans every week over various platforms such as
NME.com, NME Video, NME Radio and all of the other events they throw throughout the year. NME is the
longest published and most respected music weekly magazine in the world which means if they have been with
ICP Media for 60 years then they must have good customer connection and loyalty which makes them a good
distributor to be with.This magazine is also similar to mine as they target the same audience so to be with a
distributer who has similar magazine as they have experience which i have earlier explained is good for
business and also might help sell my magazine better.
Uncut is a rock music magazine that is commonly related to people like Bob Dylan
and Arcade Fire. The audience is for
knowledgable music fans that love classic rock
from the sixties and seventies, it may not be the
same audience as mine however it is still a
branded music magazine that sells well and is
distributed by IPC Media.
MEDIABauer Media Group is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group which is
know globally selling over 300 magazines in 15 different companies. They publish
to 19 million UK adults across the board with online material, TV and radio stations.
The group are associated with many big names such as local radio stations across
the UK, MOJO, Kerrang, Q, 4Music and lots of others. MOJO, Q and Kerrang being
the ones to focus on as they are the music magazines that relate to my situation.
Kerrang is more like my magazine at it has a similar target audience and focuses
on some of the same music genre. They appeal to the young teenagers of today,
the first issue was released in 1981 and has been growing over the years. The
average readership is 38,556 people, these figures show that the magazine is
successful and that people buy it which must come back to the distribution company which is Bauer. The
media company must know a few selling tactics in order to get give the magazine it’s growing name.
Q is also well loved magazine which uses big stars
to attract a wide audience. It specifies that it is a
rock and roll magazine, however it usually branches
out to new audiences. On average almost 61,500
people read the magazine which makes it one of the
most successful magazines on sale in the UK at the
moment.
Decision
After taking into consideration both IPC Media and Bauer Media, there are a lot of
good points and a few glitches to both companies. I think that IPC Media has several
good points and has some connections to the music business and have been going
for many years, although the magazines that they currently sell are aged and people
don't read them as much as they used to.
I think that in my case Bauer Media would be best as the music magazines that they
distribute are current and successful. They also appeal to the very similar audiences
and so with the company having a history with similar magazines, they might find my
magazine easy to take on, and sell in the best possible way.

After taking into consideration both IPC Media and Bauer Media, there are a lot of
good points and a few glitches to both companies. I think that IPC Media has several
good points and has some connections to the music business and have been going
for many years, although the magazines that they currently sell are aged and people
don't read them as much as they used to.
I think that in my case Bauer Media would be best as the music magazines that they
distribute are current and successful. They also appeal to the very similar audiences
and so with the company having a history with similar magazines, they might find my
magazine easy to take on, and sell in the best possible way.
