  2. Something you should know about me: I LOVE to travel. Whether it’s the beach, the mountains, or the city, I love to explore. I also love the thrill of the hunt, researching destinations. We’ve probably all seen our share of glossy brochures and beautiful websites, making a destination look picture perfect. But they all have one undeniable thing in common – you can never get the whole picture without experiencing it for yourself. We can imagine what is like based on what we’ve heard and seen about the destination, but nothing beats being there in person. The experience is what really matters.That same concept applies to prospective students choosing a university.
  3. Clearly, we have some outstanding folks producing our recruitment materials. They do a fabulous job of selling K-State. We set the stage with great literature about our academic programs, housing options, student life … we have gorgeous campus photos, videos, interactive tours, Facebook and Twitter … When you think about it … prospective students can learn quite a bit about an institution without ever setting foot on campus. But everything we can do, so can other universities. Each institution can make a compelling case, so how do we set ourselves apart in a sea of marketing messages?Our recruitment materials do a great job of describing what’s it’s like to attend K-State. With enough research and a little imagination, a student can begin to visualize life as a K-State student. Again it’s the experience that really matters.
  4. Most of us have probably enjoyed a Call Hall’s Purple Pride ice cream. Now, pretend that you’re describing this heavenly concoction to someone who’s never had it. We can use words to describe it – cold, purple, blueberry – even pictures of a delicious-looking ice cream cone. But no matter how well we paint the picture, we can only do so much. To really appreciate it, you’ve just got to have a bite. And to really experience it, you need a whole dish! Our recruitment materials and admissions reps do a great job of giving prospective students their first taste of K-State. But it takes the campus visit to create a more intense connection to K-State – to help that prospective student do more than imagine what it’s like to be a K-State student, but to really try it on for size.
  5. I love to shop online. But sometimes I find that what looks great in the pictures, doesn’t always fit so well when it arrives on my doorstep.Let’s say I’m going to purchase a pair of running shoes. Every brand is different, even the specific styles carried by each brand. I can read product details and online reviews from actual customers, but nothing can guarantee that the shoes will fit … that they’ll be comfortable and that they’ll meet my needs. Until I’ve tried them on and walked around my house for a while, it’s hard to know whether they’re going to be a good fit. Maybe they technically fit but don’t feel quite right. They pinch here, rub there, maybe don’t have the right kind of support. But the only way to really find out is to try the shoes on and walk in them for a while. The experience matters.
  6. A campus visit is the ultimate way for prospective students to “try on” K-State and see if they’ll be comfortable here. They’ve read about us, researched us, talked to family and friends … now they’re ready for the real “INSIDER INFORMATION” from REAL students, faculty and academic advisors … It’s important for a prospective student to get more specific perspectives than just the ones in the brochure or on the website. We want them to head home with more than just answers to their questions … we want to equip them with actual experiences.

  8. The bottom line? A good campus visit helps students EXPERIENCE an answer their burning questions. The best way to see what it’s REALLY LIKE to be a K-State student is to try it on for a day. Attend a class, eat lunch in the residence hall cafeteria, talk one-on-one with faculty, tour the facilities, attend a sporting event, musical or theatrical performance, art display or lecture … Do the types of things you would be doing as a student. All the information in the world can’t add up to the emotions of an actual experience. It’s more than just imagining yourself as a K-State student … it’s actually experiencing what it’s like to be one for a day.
  9. We know making a decision about a college is much more serious than choosing a vacation or a pair of shoes. It’s a long-term, life-changing commitment. Campus visits are critical in helping students gather the facts they need to make a good decision about the next 4 to 5 years of their lives. CLICKA campus visit gives meaning to all the information prospective students have received through guidance counselors, recruitment pieces and the opinions of loved ones. It helps us go beyond imagination to actual experience. And that’s something we can use to make a decision.
  10. It’s a lot like walking around my house in a new pair of shoes or feeling the sand between my toes. The best way to find out if I want to spend more time wearing those shoes or soaking up the sunshine on that beach is to stop just imagining what it’s like and try out the experience.I can say with confidence that K-State was the perfect fit for me. I’m excited about the opportunity to help facilitate the campus visit process, to help prospective students discover if K-State is right for them, too. To be a part of that decision-making process is a great responsibility, and would be a great honor.
