Flannery O Connor often criticizes southern customs. Her writing often exemplifies her views that cast
the south as a spiritual wasteland, overcrowded by people who preach and pride themselves on the
premise that they are good Christians. She in turn, casts them as a God fearing people. They possess the
ability to cast aside their beliefs when it suits them. These God fearing people, as portrayed in her
writing, seemed to strive for some hollow form of respect, only obtainable under a false belief that, they
deserved to be held in high regards. This leads to one of the main ideas on which Flannery O Conner
bases her writing; the absence of God. Literary critic George Kilcourse argues, that O Connor portrays
southerners of the time period as religious hypocrites, I agree with Kilcourse because, in A Good Man is
