The heart is a hollow, cone-shaped muscular pump located in the mediastinum. It pumps blood through two circuits - the pulmonary circuit which sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the systemic circuit which pumps oxygenated blood to all body cells. Over a lifetime, the heart will beat over 2 billion times and pump over 1,000 gallons of blood. The heart is enclosed in membranes called the pericardium which help reduce friction. Some common heart diseases include hypertension, heart attacks, and septal defects. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise and managing stress can help prevent heart disease.
