Although many believe that racism and segregation have declined over the years,
The Washington Post notes, in a 2016 analysis, that black Americans are 2.5 times
as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers (Lowery). In the
1930s and 1950s, Tom Robinson, Emmett Till, and the nine Scottsboro boyswere
sentenced to death after facing an all white jury for a crime they did not commit.
In 1931, nine, young, unemployed, black men were falsely accused of raping two
white women, Ruby Bates and Victoria Price. Their sentence to death after facing
an all white jury sparked rallies and parades, which successfully changed the unfair
verdict of their trial. Similarly, a fourteen year old boy named Emmett Till was
unjustly murdered after allegedly whistling at a white store owner, Carolyn
Bryant. A few days later, he was found in a nearby river, and his mother arranged
for a public funeral to expose the racial prejudice her son faced in Mississippi. The
perpetrators were acquitted of all charges when tried in front of an all white jury. In

Authoritarian Technologies In The Whale And The Reactor
Although Ursula Franklin and Langdon Winner both classify technology in different
ways, they bring up many similar points regarding the intersection of power and
technology in our everyday life. Franklin s theory of technology as practice
categorizes technology as either prescriptive or holistic in The Real World of
Technology, which correlates well with Winner s idea of technology being created
with either authoritarian or democratic motives in The Whale and the Reactor. After
reading both arguments, a clear correlation can be made between holistic/democratic
technologies and prescriptive/authoritarian technologies as a way to describe power
in our society.
Franklin uses the term technology to define ways of doing something. To her, holistic
Franklin s idea of a prescriptive technology is any process that has been broken
down into steps, where workers specialize in only one step. These technologies
require discipline and planning, and are designed for compliance (Franklin, 1999).
She uses Chinese bronze making to show how each step involves different people,
because if they weren t completed properly, the process couldn t continue.
Similarly, Winner s view on authoritarian technology in that objects can either be
designed to assist those with a hidden agenda to establish patterns of power and
authority (Winner, 1986) or that new technologies or some of their qualities can
be strongly or specifically linked to parties who are trying to create a need for
authority or power. Both of these arguments highlight that these technologies now
dominate society, and are no longer restricted to mainly material production. They
can be found in administrative and economic activities as well as many aspects
governance. Technology can now control where we can and cannot go, removing
the need to make decisions. He used the construction of overpasses in New York as
an example of this. To control who was able to get into the city, overpasses were
built low so only cars (owned by white people in the middle and upper class) could
get in and those who took public transit (poor people and racial minorities) could not,

can be created for one purpose (transportation) to disguise hidden motives (controlling

Diagnosis Pulmonary embolisms are diagnosed through several ways; x rays of
the chest are done to get a good picture of the lungs, MRIs are done to produce
images that are more detailed than x rays, blood tests are sometimes conducted to
check for a natural clot dissolving substance in the blood, venography s are
performed to get x ray images of the veins in the lungs. CT scans are done to get
cross sectional views of the lungs. Duplex Venous Ultrasound are performed by
using radio waves to check the flow of blood and to see if there are any clots
existing in the legs. The most effective way of diagnosing a pulmonary embolism is
through a pulmonary angiography, this is when the doctor makes an incision and
inserts tools into the veins of the lungs and then puts a dye though the veins to detect
any blockages.
4.Treatment For the larger and more life threatening clots, most often surgeries are
the only option to get them removed. For smaller blood clots, blood thinners and clot
dissolvers are used to break up the clots in the lungs.
5.Prognosis The prognosis of a pulmonary embolism can range from very good to
very bad. Some pulmonary embolisms are so severe that death occurs in seconds to
minutes. For others, after surgery or clot busting drugs, patients are usually put on

believe it is a social norm to wear shoes when outside. From my observation, around
Bluffton University, it is normal for students and professors to wear some sort of

As I walked into class, no one noticed I was not wearing socks and throughout the
class, I did not notice anyone look at me strangely. My friend Carly, who was
watching for reactions did not notice any reactions either. When I stood up to leave
the class, a guy in the row above me noticed and stopped and stared with his mouth
open until I was out the door, although I have no proof that his action was in
reaction to my norm violation. Then I walked around campus in just my socks,
