school affected academic achievement throughout basic education and education obtained in

Racism can be a uniting and dividing factor; whether united in hatred or united in suffering. One may
believe they are justified in their actions, but that belief is biased to each person and is irrelevant to
others. Hatred can unite as strongly if not more so than fighting for good ; one s purpose in life is
unclear and because good is not in human nature, those blurred lines allow selfish people to rise and
lead among the rest. In The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, cruelty functions as a method to
amplify racism, and in order to reach the power of one, one must lose all prejudice.
When there is cruelty and racism in one s mind, they are not only unable to accept themselves, but it
limits their ability to obtain the power of one. The power of one is that one person, and they alone, are
comfortable in a state of simply being; they have innermost awareness that allows infinite possibilities
for them because their outlook on life goes from within out into the world. Captain Smit is cruel in
nature, as well as more racist than most people today, but unlike characters like Borman, he sees those
of color as people; allowing Smit to be seen as a character that could possibly reach the power of one.

In Broken April, Ismail Kadare conveys how social expectations and rules can mentally and physically
trap someone in a violent and depressing cycle.
In regards to being physically trapped, a character that conveys this idea is Gjorg. Kadare s character
does this throughout the text, and the conflicts Gjorg faces with his devotion to the Kanun. In the
beginning of the text while Gjorg is in the funeral procession, He is described as [Feeling] the urge to
get out of that absurd situation, to bolt from the funeral cortege . (pg 16). And later on in that chapter
of the text, it states that ...he knew very well that he could never run away, no more than his
grandfather, his great grandfather, his great great grandfather, and all his ancestors five hundred, a
thousands years before him had been able to run away. (pg 16). The repetition of his ancestors convey
a very trapped tone, showing not only that they could not run away from the funeral, but the kanun
itself. Later in the text, when Gjorg is on his way to pay the blood tax, he thinks about the rules of the
Kanun, and says that he could not escape its definitions (pg 27). Again, the tone is very negative, and
Kadare uses the phrase could not escape to emphasize that no matter how much Gjorg wanted to, he
had to obey the rules and definitions within the Kanun. The last time Gjorg appears in this book is in
chapter 7, when his bessa is over and he is finally murdered. Before he dies, he thinks

Summary Of Hester Prynne
In this chapter, a crowd of bearded men and women are standing outside of the door to what is
probably the prison. The narrator, who is the man who found the documents in the custom house,
discusses the vision of the perfect world the Puritans who settled there and how they ironically built a
prison and a cemetery as the first buildings when they arrived in the new world. A beautiful rose bush
stands, out of place, by the prison door.
In this chapter, Hester Prynne, a young woman, emerges from a prison door while carrying a child.
Prynne is to be condemned for committing adultery and for giving birth to an illegitimate child. As she
makes her way to the platform, the women in the crowd makes criticizing comments about the
elaborate letter A stitched onto her chest. Prynne then remembers her earlier life about her childhood
and questions if her current situation is real.
In this chapter, Hester Prynne is on a scaffold and spots someone she recognizes in the crowd. The
man, who she recognizes, learns about Hester s crime (adultery) from a townsman. Hester is then
called to attention by John Wilson and is asked by Mr. Dimmesdale to name the father of her child.
Despite his pleads, she refuses to name the man and is led back to prison.
In this chapter, Hester meets her husband in the prison when he was called to provide medical service.
Hester at first refuses to drink the medicine he provided thinking its poison, but eventually drinks it
