Las Vegas Movie Analysis
Before watching this movie, I thought Las Vegas is a place that shapes many people s life and decides
their destinies. And the only determine factor of winning money is luck. For example, when two
people bring the same amount of money to Las Vegas, one of them may become a millionaire and
another person may lose everything during one night. However, after watching this movie, my
impression to statistics has totally changed. It seems that people can use statistics to help gain the
greatest advantages in many circumstances. Also, I saw the dark side in human nature. Teacher
Mickey is a main character in the movie. He is a greedy, ambitious person who uses his students to
earn money. Obviously, he is not a qualified teacher. Therefore, I think society should pay more
attention to select teacher, because teacher can directly influence the next generation.
In this movie, the main character Ben is a college student who is good at math. He receives Harford
Medical School s offer, however, he doesn t have enough money to pay the tuition. At this time, his
calculus professor notices his talent on calculating. Then the professor invites him to become a
member of a math group and uses his talent to earn money in Las Vegas. The professor finds that Ben
has a gifted brain is because he successfully solves a famous statistic question which is Monty Hall
problem . In this problem, one person is on a TV show. The anchorman asks him to choose one gate
from within three gates. One of the

Heroism As A Hero
As Mahatma Gandhi once said Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an
indomitable will. Heroes don t always have to be on the big screen like in movies or shows. Being a
hero involves wanting to do good in life and reaching goals. For this is the way true heroes are
brought to light. Heroism involves the act of sacrificing for the good of others and being courageous
but, it does not always lead to a great success in the end. Heroes sacrifice themselves to help benefit
others and to follow through achievements. Like during the hard times of 9/11, a man named Vincent
Ardolino sacrificed himself in order to save the people of his community. While he was rescuing, he
said Take me now, leave them here. This shows that he was willing to stand up, work through
challenges, and sacrifice himself which is what a true hero would do. Another man named Captain
Vikram Batra also sacrificed himself to help his fellow companions. While he and his crew were
climbing up a mountain to reach their enemies during war, he got injured. Even though he got hurt,
this did not hold Batra back from saving his officer who was severely injured too. Another man of his
crew attempted to save the officer but Batra did not allow since he could ve gotten really hurt. Then he
saved his officer but ended up dead. He sacrificed his all in order to keep his crew safe and protected.
His actions brought him to light and showed that he was a hero. Furthermore, real heroes do all they

Causes of Global Warming
Many businesses, industrial factories, and vehicles produce massive amounts of natural gases that
affect the world in many ways. These gas particles that move rapidly and constantly collide with the
atmosphere. This causes the air on Earth to contain higher kinetic energy due to the fact that more gas
particles from the natural gases are colliding with the air particles. The higher kinetic energy results in
higher temperature and heating of Earth s surface. The heating of the Earth s surface causes many of
the world problems that we have today. As more and more factories and industries produce gases that
pollute the world, they also increase the effects of global warming. Gas particles from these natural
gases move rapidly throughout the atmosphere. Since these gases are still near the surface of the
Earth, these gas particles collide much more and become more rapid creating more kinetic energy. If
there is more kinetic energy in these gas particles, there is an increase in temperature. Around the
world there are so many products and resources that require the release of gases. These gases, once
released, increase the temperature in the atmosphere to be able to melt the ice at the north and south
poles. The gas particles are able to spread out throughout the Earth s atmosphere to trap the heat which
increases the temperature of the Earth s surface allowing the ice to melt.
Hurricanes, storms, and droughts are caused by numerous factors. Droughts are caused by the

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey
In Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, there were two main characters that were in
a battle to have the majority of control over the ward. Throughout the story, they engaged in different
acts of stubbornness to see who could display the most power and which of the two could stand their
ground the longest without giving in to the other. These two characters were: Randle McMurphy, a
new patient who was determined to change the ways of the ward, and Nurse Ratched, the head nurse
of the asylum who preferred to have complete control over everyone and everything.
Even though both characters go about gaining power in different ways, they are still both doing
whatever they can to have the upper hand over each other. They are both ... Show more content on

He says, Just as I said: any of you sharpies here willing to take my five bucks that says that I can get
the best of that woman, before the week s up, without her getting the best of me? (73) This quote
shows that McMurphy is very self assured that he can accomplish what he sets his mind to. The ward
was not used to this kind of behavior in a man. Most of the men that were already there needed to be
there because of an actual insanity problem, but McMurphy was there because he would rather have
been there than where he was before and the court had allowed him to be transferred. McMurphy took
them completely by surprise with his resistance to follow their instructions and to do what he was
expected to do. At his arrival, he immediately exhibited disobedience. He refused to take a shower,
which was the asylum s policy for new admissions. This instantly put Randle McMurphy under the
staff s radar for them to watch out for. Nurse Ratched (also known as Big Nurse) was used to being
forceful to get what she wanted. She stopped at no end to have complete oversight over the men in the
ward. When the men were in the nurse s presence they were either saying what they knew she wanted
to hear or cleaning something that she ordered them to clean. They knew not to speak out against her
and to not say something that would make you stand out too much. Ratched s tactics to get them to be
fit for society were normally some kind of procedure on the man

A Brief Biography Of Pythagoras
A Brief Biography of Pythagoras Pythagoras was a Greek religious leader who made huge
developments in math. He is described as the first pure mathematician. Pythagoras is a very important
figure in the development of mathematics and he made many contributions to the math we use today.
Pythagoras was born c.570 BCE in Samos, Ionia, Greece and died on c.495 BCE on Matapontion.
There is not a lot of information about his childhood. In 532 BCE, Pythagoras emigrated to Italy,
where he attended a scientific school. One of the teachers who had a big influence in Pythagoras life
was Pherekydes. As well as Thales, a philosophe. Thales introduced him to math ideas and suggested
to go to Egypt to learn more about every subject. So he took ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

That at its deepest level, reality is mathematical in nature, 2. That philosophy can be used for spiritual
purification, 3. That the soul can rise to union with the divine, 4. That certain symbols have a mystical
significance, and 5. That all brothers of the order should observe strict loyalty and secrecy. In this
society were accepted both man and women. Brumbaugh says that it hard for us today, familiar as we
are with pure mathematical abstraction and with the mental act of generalization, to appreciate the
originality of this Pythagorean contribution because we do not know in what sense Pythagorean and
mathematikoi were studying mathematics. Regarding to this we do not know what work is his anf
what is his followers because there wasn t much writing. Even though from the Pythagoras actual
work nothing is known, Braumbaugh writes that he studied proportion of numbers, odd and even
numbers, perfect numbers, etc. and he states: Each number had its own personality masculine or
feminine, perfect or incomplete, beautiful or ugly. This feeling modern mathematics has deliberately
eliminated, but we still find overtones if it in fiction and poetry. Ten was the very best number: it
contained in itself the first four integers one, two, three, and four [1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10] and these written
in dot notation formed a perfect triangle. And today we know Pythagoras for his famous Pythagorean

Holy Spirit Research Paper
This is a great verse of Scripture to lift the heart in praise and worship of God the Father, Jesus Christ,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It make me think of the Triune Godhead, and how it is for our benefit
that God sent Jesus to atone for our sins, break down the barrio that separates us from Him, not only
did Jesus Christ carry out the mission that God ordained; He sent the Holy Spirit to keep us, guide us
in all that Jesus had taught, and that God s will be done.
I think that the Holy Spirit is not given the praise that He is worthy of receiving. I have written about
the experience that I have encountered with the Holy Spirit, and it was so real. Once you have
experienced the Holy Spirit, it will change your life in one way or another.

Christianity And The Rise Of Christianity Essay
Christianity in the 21st century is the largest religion in the world and has over two billion followers.
Christians classify themselves under 34,000 different denominations. This popular religion is all about
the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When a religion is born so is a holy book to remember
it by. The bible is considered the word of God and is known for its infamous stories and sayings. The
Bible contains rules and righteous acts to live by. Many question as to how Christianity spread and to
what extent did Jesus Christ and his apostles go through in order to gain followers. A major reason for
the spread of Christianity was because people seeked comfort in the promise of the afterlife and found
the need to preform charitable deeds euphoric. Jesus Christ founded Christianity which later on began
to spread its meaning around the Roman Empire by his apostles. Jesus Christ was also born a Jew in
about 7 B.C and almost all of his followers at that time were Jews as well. Jesus Christ also observed
the Jewish faith and was very well experienced with the Jewish law. Jesus Christ s mission was made
to spread the word of God to mankind. As converts to Christianity increased, the religion as well
began to spread. This all began somewhat 2000 years ago in what is now Israel but was at that time,
Judea. Christianity was quite linked to Judaism; they both shared similar rules and meanings to what
the religions held. The emperor of Rome was Nero, who was famously

Nanda Home achieving rapid success in first few years through the launch of Clocky in America has
been experiencing decrease of revenue. To sustain success in previous years, Nanda Home needs to be
aware of the failures on branding its company and products. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate
the failure on sustaining Clocky s appeal, and to analyze the market situation of Turkey to make
recommendation to brand Nanda Home and Clocky successfully based on the branding goal of
awareness and function.
Although Nanda Home innovated a movable alarm clock, Clocky, it was not able to aware the target
market, leading to a lack of sense of loyalty of customers. Nanda Home designed Clocky with funny,
playful and lifelike appearance and function of rolling around to attract both need and fun markets.
The essential functions of Clocky gained the support of people suffering from serious sleep disorders
and inability to wake up but the size of need market is too small to sustain a revenue growth.
Meanwhile, the reaction of consumers in fun market towards Clocky was not as desirable as what
Nanda Home expected. The popularity of Clocky and Nanda Home is a fad that the unattractive
appearance and high price of Clocky could not retain customers in fun market. The easily replaceable
function of alarm clock by mobile phone and the existence of counterfeit products at lower price
further discouraged the purchase of Clocky from Nanda Home. Though Nanda Home has offered

Should Father s Receive Paid Paternity Leave
In this day in age we find ourselves wondering if is feasible for men to get paid paternity leave, since
women get paid maternity leave after they have their baby. You have to really think about this though,
because not all companies pay women to take maternity leave. So why would we pay our men to take
paternity leave when not all women get paid when they have no choice but to take off after having a
baby. So I want you to ask yourself, Should father s get paid for paternity leave? There are some good
aspects to having the father take paternity leave. Say, companies did offer ... Show more content on

Having the father home will help with daycare cost when the mother goes back to work. There are
some potential downsides to men having paid paternity leave. Most countries make parental leave
open to both men and women; women take the vast majority of leave. When leave is long, this can
have some consequences for women s place in the labor market. For example, in Sweden parents have
the right to a parental leave for up to 18 months, but women take nearly 85% of parental leave. The
major goal of Swedish policy these days is to encourage men to take more parental leave; already
there are two month daddy only leaves, which are lost to the couple if the father doesn t take them.
The problem with fathers taking paternity leave is that the fathers are scared to take leave for the fear
that they may lose their jobs. Companies should offer paternity leave for expectant fathers. By
offering paternity leave for fathers to be companies allow fathers to be a benefit of paid or unpaid time
off work to care for their child, make arrangements for the child s welfare, and preparation for the
adoption of a child. Generally, offering paternity leave for fathers allows them to benefit the birth of a
child. Companies that provide the option of paternity leave grant these fathers the privilege of being
present for labor, delivery, and any other emergency procedures that may be necessary. Paternity leave
provides the father with an advantage to be able to care for their

Museum Field Trips to National Gallery of Art (NGA) and...
The two sites that I have chosen to compare are the National Gallery of Art (NGA) and The
Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met). The reason I chose these specific sites was the first images I
saw which made me want to explore the webpages. I will be comparing the visual quality of the
homepage, pictures, text, and content along with the overall quality of the two sites. I will go into
detail about the differences and which site, in my opinion, would be more enjoyable based on their
website. Upon first glance of their homepages, the two sites look completely different in style. When
The Metropolitan Museum homepage loaded, I was in awe of the bold image of a man s face covered
with ink art. It was eye catching at first, but then I noticed there was no other graphics or pictures on
the homepage. The one slide show picture did not even fill the screen from side to side either. It left a
kind of boring, bland feeling with me. Then I clicked on the link for the National Gallery of Art
homepage. As this site loaded, it filled the computer screen with side to side full color. The
background was a beautiful picture of an elegant cathedral like building. In the middle of this eye
catching background was a slide menu where each group had its very own beautiful picture. Another
refreshing feature is that the background image changes often so that each time I visited it is was a
different background image. Although the menu pictures were not as large as The Metropolitan

No More Boomerang By Oodgeroo Noonuccal
The poem No More Boomerang, written by Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) provides many
examples of contrast, showing how things of the old have been replaced by the new, and rhyme,
shown between the stanzas allowing for the remembrance of the message more easily, to convey its
message. An examples of this is No more message stick, lubras and lads, Got television now, mostly
ads. This part of a stanza provides evidence that during the aboriginal times for entertainment or
pleasure they had message sticks, lubras and lads, whereas nowadays people have television to use,
mostly containing ads, for enjoyment. This is one examples that the poems provides that illustrate for
us how the times of the old is being replaced by the new. The rhyme is

emergencies that can happen in a health and social care setting. Within my assignment I will be
explaining possible priorities and responses when dealing with two incidents or emergencies in a
health and social care setting. I will be discussing health, safety or security concerns that may arise
from the incident or emergency. Then I will be discussing how I would respond to them. An
emergency is defined as a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate
action. (Oxford University). An incident is defined as a relatively insignificant event that might have
serious consequences. (Collins, 2014). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

because Anna s safety comes first. My last priority is to ensure that all the residents in the home

staff is giving the right doses to the right clients. This is an important thing to do because it s going to

The arguments made often rely on the trussing that these experts provide through their ethos.
Statements made were often times exaggerated at best and occasionally required logical fallacies to
work. There is a large amount of time demonizing the current food industry and the artificial and
mono nutrient compounds in the first half of the film. Use of scary chemical names and
misappropriated information about said chemical is used for harrowing effect. Propylene glycol is one
chemical remarked to be a common food additive that could also be used to winterize your car. As this
is not a false statement, it is similar in effect to saying that water is in antifreeze. MSG was stated as
another chemical used in this manner that was extremely harmful (viewer was implored at one point to
search for MSG Obesity induced mice ). Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners were also vilified,
with claims such as Aspartame causing formaldehyde buildup in the brain.
When studies were shown not to support the film s argument, they were occasionally argued to be
irrelevant due to interested manufacturers funding (and possibly manipulating) the data within the
studies for monetary gains. An example is when Dr. Mercola that the 90 studies that find aspartame to
be harmless by Ralph G. Walton and the like, 90 percent of them are funded by corporate interest and
that any independent studies find the exact opposite, insinuating fowl play in the

Chrysanthemums Sexism
In his short story, Chrysanthemums , John Steinbeck characterizes Elisa as strong, passionate, and
slightly submissive. This story taking place in the era of the Great Depression shows the role of
women in this Californian farming society, and also the sentiments of women and how sexism
influenced their everyday life. Steinbeck uses those three adjectives to show just how the women of
the 30 s were treated and looked at by men and society.
In the story Chrysanthemums , Steinbeck introduces Elisa, the wife of a farmer in the Salinas Valley in
California, as a woman who is about her work and is very dedicated to her garden of chrysanthemums.

Elisa s eyes grew alert and eager... Her eyes shone. She tore off her hat and shook out her beautiful

a mini lesson to relay to the woman who was supposedly interested in her own flower garden,
showing the obvious passion and elation that someone else might share a common interest as her. The

Magna Carta Research Paper
The Magna Carta was a charter in 1215 that gave rights to protect its subjects from King John and his
oppressive rulings. It contained sixty three clauses that detailed everything from land rights to legal
rights. This document gave protection to the people from the tyrant King and placed no man above the
law, not even the king. Unfortunately, the document failed with civil war ensuing months later.
King John was excommunicated from the church in 1209 for seizing church property and selling it
back to the church at a profit. He then used these funds to build an English Navy to invade Ireland in
1210. He then furthered his exhibition to invade Poitou, France and after a humiliating defeat to

In May of 1215 the rebels declared war against their King in an attempt to revolt against the
oppressing regime stemming from Henry II. After the failed attempt to infiltrate Northampton castle,
the people of London opened their gate to let them in. Thus, leading to the signing of the Magna
Carta.
The Magna Carta is typical of the era because, people were tired of being oppressed by a tyrant. This
is evident in a writing by Matthew Paris, Foul as it is, hell itself is made fouler by the presence of
King John. The writing is also specific to its time, the document was written in Old English. The
subject of the document was a series of clauses to ensure that not even the king was above the law.
This work was considerably unusual for its time, because the king had always been the Judge and the
Jury. The people were his subjects and the people were subjected to his rulings. A king could levy
taxes at any rate from his subjects to support his war efforts. But, as stated in the Magna Carta under
the 12th clause it states No scutage (money levied for war) or aid may be levied in our kingdom

The Contemporary Art of Atomic Vacation by Todd Schorr
Description Atomic Vacation is an outstanding example of contemporary art. The painting was created
with acrylic paints on a 6 x 7 foot canvas. Todd Schorr (American artist) painted Atomic Vacation in
2008 but, did not release it till the art show Designed for Extinction where he showcased his last
decade of work. This painting caused a huge controversy with religious groups from the area around
the Otis College of Art and Design in L.A. Todd Schorr is known as one of the best acrylic painters of
our time. The way he blends colors, yet making each one stand out shows in great detail how he has
mastered the art of acrylic painting. The color template used for this work was very wide, and that
only further shows how great of an artist Schorr is. He also uses thin, fat, swirly, straight, and curved
lines showing his skills of using the lines in a flowing way when it comes to the family and their
camper; however, he also uses jagged lines in the horseman and demons to show a little intimidation.
If you look closely at the ring around the mushroom cloud, you will notice that using a great detail of
shadowing, there are demons and monsters swirling in chaos. This alone shows how Todd Schorr has
mastered the art of acrylic painting with great detail. II. Analysis The subject of this painting is quite
obvious. The four horsemen come straight from the New Testament of the Bible when it is depicting

United States Aggression Against Islam
United States aggression against Islam:
As noted above, the main goal of al Qaeda propaganda is to convince the Muslim world (ummah) that
the West is waging a war on (or conducting a crusade against) Islam. All of the detainees at
Guantanamo are Muslim, many were jailed without any involvement with al Qaeda, the Taliban, or
militant behavior at all, (Fox News) and some abused. (Center for Constitutional Rights) These facts,
manipulated correctly and placed into a certain context, could be used to convince a susceptible
audience that the United States is operating the prison partially to persecute Muslim men, and as an
example of the US targeting Muslims generally.
Al Qaeda uses this imagined war as a rallying cry to convince a small minority in the Muslim world to
join its cause, as well as a justification for its actions casting them as a defensive jihad against the
enemies of the faith. In situations when the faith is attacked, according to Daveed Gartenstein Ross,
each Muslim has an individual obligation to join the battle ... this must be done by all Muslims, and as
Todd Helmus writes, Al Qaeda thus calls Muslims to Islam s defense. (121)
The Canadian Center for Intelligence and Security Studies report explains that, Al Qaeda s propaganda
portrays the current socio political system as one that oppresses and discriminates against Muslims,
who are the victims of an international world order dominated by the West the aggressor and enemy of
Islam. (ITAC

Figurative Language In Casey At The Bat
The author, Ernest L. Thayer, of Casey at the Bat, uses humor to describe Casey s experiences. He
uses humor in the form of rhyming. He also uses humor in the form of figurative language. A good bit
of humor is shown through these forms of humor. The humor is described very well by the author.
Starting with figurative language, you find a hyperbole. The example is when one person at the stand
shouts, Kill him! Kill the umpire! It s hyperbole because he doesn t want him to literally be killed.
What makes it humorous is that some readers may find it funny for someone to yell, Kill him, at a
baseball game. The example for rhyming is when the stragglers thought about betting on Casey. The
author wrote, They thought, If only Casey could

A Storied Market Leader Facing Competitive Pressures
Ice Fili A storied market leader facing competitive pressures To: Senior Management, Ice Fili
February 12, 2012 Current Situation Ice Fili was able to maintain its leading position in the Russian
ice cream industry during volatile times. However, it now faces even tougher challenges that threaten
its future prospects: reduction in ice cream consumption, emergence of cost efficient regional players,
and the lack of a quality distribution system. After analyzing the situation, we recommend a strategy
that aims to grow sales through the earning of market share, and improving the distribution network.
Porter s Five Forces Model Industry Rivalry Industry rivalry is high. The ice cream industry is
fragmented; 300 producers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To succeed in this strategy, Ice Fili needs to do two things. First, it needs to broadcast its commitment
to follow the legacy of the traditional Russian ice cream makers and inspire consumers to cherish and
value traditional Russian ice cream making method, thus creating stronger brand equity. Second, Ice
Fili needs to restructure its current distribution system. Nestle already has its products twice as
available as Ice Fili. Summation of Key Problems 1) Competition: Baskin amp; Robbins and Haagen
Dazs have already become incumbents in the premium ice cream space. Regional players have a big
cost advantage so a price war or a move into a low cost strategy would be difficult. 2) Distribution: Ice
Fili s products have fairly limited availability. Distribution was also highlighted as a factor for the
failure of other players in the Russian ice cream market Reccomendation Possible Strategies The main
goal of our recommendation is to stop the decline of Ice Fili s return on equity which has fallen from
27.3% in 1996 to 14.4% in 2001 (Figure 1, Appendix). We will look to do this through a combination
of sales growth and margin expansion. We outline several possible options, and choose one which
looks to be the most optimal: 1) Focus on a low cost approach to grow sales 2) Focus on restaurants
and café s to improve

The Effect Of Sarbanes Oxley On Accounting Essay
Abstract
The Effects of Sarbanes Oxley on Accounting
Introduction
The law of Sarbanes Oxley has changed the business history since twenty ears ago. When is came out,
there is a new regulation for the company and get huge effects to the business. Before 2002, the U.S
markets have suffered many financial scandals. Frauds of these enterprises not only cheated
customers, but also took a heavy toll themselves. These behaviors seriously damaged the capital
market order and negatively affected American s economy at that time. Therefore, to protect investors
by improving the accuracy and reliability of corporate , and to restore public confidence in financial
statement , Sarbanes Oxley Act was passed in 2002 for all U.S. public company boards, management
and public accounting firms. After Sarbanes Oxley law came out, the effects on the whole business
market has changed a lot. Also, the law took a big challenge on the governance, tax, implementation
and accounting profession.
Problem before Sarbanes Oxley
The financial report during the late 1990s and early 2000s had less public confidence in the auditor s
performance. The first issues are on the rise of non audit, consulting and service. At that time, clients
were paying their auditors more for consulting not for the financial statement audit. For the result, the
company seek for the lower margin audit as a foot in the door to more lucrative consulting
engagements. The later issue is about the downward

Brain Disorders Of The Nervous System
1. The Nervous System
The human body is made up of many systems. The integumentary system, the skeletal system, the
muscular system, the endocrine system, the cardiovascular system and finally; the nervous system. In
this literary review we will be discussing Motor Neurone Disease which is a disorder of the nervous
system.
The nervous system is a multipurpose, integrated system which is made up of many parts (Walsh,
2002). The nervous system controls and co ordinates all parts of the body and contains the higher
human functions such as memory and reasoning (Walsh, 2002). It also provides a complex
communication system between the body s external and internal environments (Walsh, 2002). The
nervous system is broken down into two systems, the peripheral nervous system and the central
nervous system (Walsh, 2002). The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord and
the peripheral nervous system consists of the spinal and cranial nerves (Walsh, 2002).

The disease attacks the nerves in the spinal cord and brain (IMNDA, 2015). In result the messages
from the brain stop reaching the muscles which will lead to weakness in the muscles at first but
eventually the muscles waste completely (IMNDA, 2015). The cause of Motor Neurone Disease is
unknown and there is no cure at present (IMNDA, 2015).Statistically Motor Neurone Disease is
higher in people between the ages of fifty five and seventy seven (Marsden, 2011). Around ten percent
of the patients below the age of forty five develop the disease and twenty percent of people over the
age of seventy develop the disease but it can develop in people at any age but is out of the ordinary
(Marsden, 2011). Motor Neurone Disease is quite rare with only seven in one hundred thousand
people developing the disease (Marsden

Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought
David Wolkoff
English 9CP/Western Civ.
Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss
April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought
The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of
property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This
idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way
of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era
philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different
from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more
than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th
century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of
democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from these
ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly
into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of John Locke
and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it today would not
exist.
The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas that
existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are

Descartes And Spinoza On Nature Of God
When it comes to life s unanswerable questions, philosophers have always been prepared to provide
possible explanations on what they believe and try to further discuss difficult topics. This is certainly
the case when it comes to Descartes and Spinoza, who are both adamant that their views provide the
correct context and insight on their opinions of God. In Readings in Modern Philosophy by Ariew and
Watkins, it is revealed that while both philosophers tend to agree on opinions like God being infinite,
there are many reasons why Descartes and Spinoza disagree on the nature of God and their opinion of
substance, for example, Descartes believes that there is more than one type of substance, while
Spinoza argues that God is the only substance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This goes back to the idea of God being infinite because he acknowledges that a substance like God
will always persist regardless of if anyone was there to think him into existence. In addition, the view
that God is a morally good and just substance plays a significant role in Descartes beliefs, without it,
many of his ideas wouldn t be as secure, such as his beliefs of physical objects, he explains this when
he states, Now there clearly is in me a passive faculty of sensing, that is, a faculty for receiving and
knowing the ideas of sensible things; but I could not use it unless there also existed, either in me or in
something else, a certain active faculty of producing or bringing about these ideas... (RMP, 51). This is
one way that Descartes argues that the nature of God is supremely good. It shows that Descartes doesn
t think that God is a deceiver, this is important because it revelas how he views God s nature, as an
inherently good because he explains that if we are deceived by God then he must not be real because
God is not a deceiver.
Alternatively, Spinoza s ideas of the nature of God differ greatly. To begin, Spinoza views God as the
only infinite substance that has an infinite amount of distinct attributes. He believes that God exists
necessarily and that created substances are nonexistent. He defines substance by stating, Substance
which we understand to be through itself supremely perfect and in which nothing can be

Homosexuality Is A Way Of Living Life
Homosexuality is one the most controversial topics societies have faced and continue to face. The
beliefs of many people around the world about the nature of homosexuality, go into two patterns
called choice and gene. Is homosexuality a choice or a gene? Are we born the way we are? Or are we
shaped by the environmental factors while we grow up? The origin of homosexuality has been
discussed intensively around the world. Gay is a sexual orientation, but the fact of acting on it is a
choice. However, every person has their own views regarding this concept throughout time. Some
people believe that homosexuality is a way of living life that people choose. On the other hand, some
say that homosexuality is a gene or even worse a disease. The hypotheses that homosexuality is a
disease that can and need to be cured has been supported by multiple people around the world.
Throughout history, research, doctors and philosophers have spent time debating about the origin of
homosexuality. Edmund Bergler was one of them, an Austrian born American psychoanalyst whose
book covered such topics as childhood development, mid life crises and human behavior in general.
He was the most important theorist of homosexuality in the 1950s. In 1951, Bergler wrote
Homosexuality: Disease or Way of life to deeply explore the origin of homosexuality. In the book, he
argues that homosexuality is a disease and not a choice, an argument that I do not accept. According to
him, homosexuals are a small

What Are The Rhetorical Techniques Used In Sicko By...
Sicko is a narrative created by Michael Moore that puts an spotlights on medical insurance in
America. The narrative gives an inside and out comprehension and examination of the endless human
services issues in America. A large part of these issues result from the defilement show in the
American medical coverage industry. The message that Michael Moore is attempting to get crosswise
over to his crowd is that of the everlasting status inside the American healthcare insurance framework.
Mr. Moore Sicko documentary was compelling because he incorporates two rhetorical techniques
which are pathos and logos. He thinks about and differentiate, questions American s ethics, and offers
meetings to get the watcher to agree with the contention with these techniques. First, he uses pathos in
his documentary by capturing the audience attention by comparing and contrasting our health care to
other countries who have universal healthcare like France, Britain, Canada, and Cuda. Within a couple
of scenes of the film Moore had demonstrated a man sowing his own knee, a man who needed to
choose which finger he needed to pay for to get settled, and a 79 year old man as yet attempting to pay
for his remedies. This influences the watcher to express sensitivity for the general population affected
by medical coverage organizations. Poignancy is Michael Moore s principle system to get his
contention over. All through the documentary are heartbreaking family stories that are used to
influence the

Themes Explored in Purple Hibiscus
1) Five major issues explored in purple hibiscus are; domestic violence, oppression, religion,
education and love.
2a) Adichie uses a narrative point of view to explore the theme of domestic violence. The book is
narrated in the first person by a 15 year old who is directly affected by domestic violence. Because of
her young age she is quiet honest and this allows her to paint a great picture to the audience of the
brutal abuse that Eugene bestows upon his family. This is as a result of her sensitive, intelligent and
observant nature.
2b) Oppression is explored through narrative point of view. Adichie uses the point of view of Kambili
to show the audience how oppressed the country is not only in the Achike household but the whole of

Kambili sees the sips of scorching tea from her father as a representation of his love, this love is very
painful. Amadi s love on the other hand is not the painful kind of love but instead a joyous one.
4a) Adichie uses setting to explore domestic violence. Domestic violence is present in the Achike
household. This setting is the only setting in the entire book where domestic violence is present.
Adichie uses a variety of things and rooms within this setting to bring out domestic violence some
examples are the figurines, Eugene and Beatrice s room and the bathroom.
4b) the entire setting of Nigeria brings out the theme of oppression especially political oppression. All
of Nigeria is suffering as a result of the political oppression, including Abba Town, Enugu and Ifeoma
s village. The road setting also shows political oppression, especially when persons are stopped and
searched by the military for no good reason.
4c) Religion is explored through setting, Adichie uses Aunty Ifeoma s home to teach Kambili things
about religion different that she had been taught be her father. It was in Aunty Ifeoma s house that
Kambili understood her grandfather s traditionalist religion and was able to make a link between
Catholicism and Traditionalist.
4d) A setting used to explore education is Aunty Ifeoma s home. Aunty Ifeoma in her home speaks of
the many young girls in the school who get married then allow their husbands to own them and their
degrees.

  • 2. Las Vegas Movie Analysis Before watching this movie, I thought Las Vegas is a place that shapes many people s life and decides their destinies. And the only determine factor of winning money is luck. For example, when two people bring the same amount of money to Las Vegas, one of them may become a millionaire and another person may lose everything during one night. However, after watching this movie, my impression to statistics has totally changed. It seems that people can use statistics to help gain the greatest advantages in many circumstances. Also, I saw the dark side in human nature. Teacher Mickey is a main character in the movie. He is a greedy, ambitious person who uses his students to earn money. Obviously, he is not a qualified teacher. Therefore, I think society should pay more attention to select teacher, because teacher can directly influence the next generation. In this movie, the main character Ben is a college student who is good at math. He receives Harford Medical School s offer, however, he doesn t have enough money to pay the tuition. At this time, his calculus professor notices his talent on calculating. Then the professor invites him to become a member of a math group and uses his talent to earn money in Las Vegas. The professor finds that Ben has a gifted brain is because he successfully solves a famous statistic question which is Monty Hall problem . In this problem, one person is on a TV show. • 3. Heroism As A Hero As Mahatma Gandhi once said Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. Heroes don t always have to be on the big screen like in movies or shows. Being a hero involves wanting to do good in life and reaching goals. For this is the way true heroes are brought to light. Heroism involves the act of sacrificing for the good of others and being courageous but, it does not always lead to a great success in the end. Heroes sacrifice themselves to help benefit others and to follow through achievements. Like during the hard times of 9/11, a man named Vincent Ardolino sacrificed himself in order to save the people of his community. While he was rescuing, he said Take me now, leave them here. This shows that he was willing to stand up, work through challenges, and sacrifice himself which is what a true hero would do. Another man named Captain Vikram Batra also sacrificed himself to help his fellow companions. While he and his crew were climbing up a mountain to reach their enemies during war, he got injured. Even though he got hurt, this did not hold Batra back from saving his officer who was severely injured too. Another man of his crew attempted to save the officer but Batra did not allow since he could ve gotten really hurt. Then he saved his officer but ended up dead. He sacrificed his all in order to keep his crew safe and protected. His actions brought him to light and showed that he was a hero. Furthermore, real heroes do all they ... • 4. Causes of Global Warming Many businesses, industrial factories, and vehicles produce massive amounts of natural gases that affect the world in many ways. These gas particles that move rapidly and constantly collide with the atmosphere. This causes the air on Earth to contain higher kinetic energy due to the fact that more gas particles from the natural gases are colliding with the air particles. The higher kinetic energy results in higher temperature and heating of Earth s surface. The heating of the Earth s surface causes many of the world problems that we have today. As more and more factories and industries produce gases that pollute the world, they also increase the effects of global warming. Gas particles from these natural gases move rapidly throughout the atmosphere. Since these gases are still near the surface of the Earth, these gas particles collide much more and become more rapid creating more kinetic energy. If there is more kinetic energy in these gas particles, there is an increase in temperature. Around the world there are so many products and resources that require the release of gases. These gases, once released, increase the temperature in the atmosphere to be able to melt the ice at the north and south poles. The gas particles are able to spread out throughout the Earth s atmosphere to trap the heat which increases the temperature of the Earth s surface allowing the ice to melt. Hurricanes, storms, and droughts are caused by numerous factors. Droughts are caused by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These two characters were: Randle McMurphy, a new patient who was determined to change the ways of the ward, and Nurse Ratched, the head nurse of the asylum who preferred to have complete control over everyone and everything. Most of the men that were already there needed to be there because of an actual insanity problem, but McMurphy was there because he would rather have been there than where he was before and the court had allowed him to be transferred. McMurphy took them completely by surprise with his resistance to follow their instructions and to do what he was expected to do. At his arrival, he immediately exhibited disobedience. He refused to take a shower, which was the asylum s policy for new admissions. This instantly put Randle McMurphy under the staff s radar for them to watch out for. Nurse Ratched (also known as Big Nurse) was used to being forceful to get what she wanted. She stopped at no end to have complete oversight over the men in the ward. When the men were in the nurse s presence they were either saying what they knew she wanted to hear or cleaning something that she ordered them to clean. In 532 BCE, Pythagoras emigrated to Italy, where he attended a scientific school. One of the teachers who had a big influence in Pythagoras life was Pherekydes. As well as Thales, a philosophe. Brumbaugh says that it hard for us today, familiar as we are with pure mathematical abstraction and with the mental act of generalization, to appreciate the originality of this Pythagorean contribution because we do not know in what sense Pythagorean and mathematikoi were studying mathematics. Regarding to this we do not know what work is his anf what is his followers because there wasn t much writing. This feeling modern mathematics has deliberately eliminated, but we still find overtones if it in fiction and poetry. A major reason for the spread of Christianity was because people seeked comfort in the promise of the afterlife and found the need to preform charitable deeds euphoric. Jesus Christ founded Christianity which later on began to spread its meaning around the Roman Empire by his apostles. Jesus Christ was also born a Jew in about 7 B.C and almost all of his followers at that time were Jews as well. Most countries make parental leave open to both men and women; women take the vast majority of leave. When leave is long, this can have some consequences for women s place in the labor market. For example, in Sweden parents have the right to a parental leave for up to 18 months, but women take nearly 85% of parental leave. The major goal of Swedish policy these days is to encourage men to take more parental leave; already there are two month daddy only leaves, which are lost to the couple if the father doesn t take them. The problem with fathers taking paternity leave is that the fathers are scared to take leave for the fear that they may lose their jobs. Companies should offer paternity leave for expectant fathers. By offering paternity leave for fathers to be companies allow fathers to be a benefit of paid or unpaid time off work to care for their child, make arrangements for the child s welfare, and preparation for the adoption of a child. Generally, offering paternity leave for fathers allows them to benefit the birth of a child. United States Aggression Against Islam United States aggression against Islam: As noted above, the main goal of al Qaeda propaganda is to convince the Muslim world (ummah) that the West is waging a war on (or conducting a crusade against) Islam. All of the detainees at Guantanamo are Muslim, many were jailed without any involvement with al Qaeda, the Taliban, or militant behavior at all, (Fox News) and some abused. (Center for Constitutional Rights) These facts, manipulated correctly and placed into a certain context, could be used to convince a susceptible audience that the United States is operating the prison partially to persecute Muslim men, and as an example of the US targeting Muslims generally. Al Qaeda uses this imagined war as a rallying cry to convince a small minority in the Muslim world to join its cause, as well as a justification for its actions casting them as a defensive jihad against the enemies of the faith. A Storied Market Leader Facing Competitive Pressures Ice Fili A storied market leader facing competitive pressures To: Senior Management, Ice Fili February 12, 2012 Current Situation Ice Fili was able to maintain its leading position in the Russian ice cream industry during volatile times. However, it now faces even tougher challenges that threaten its future prospects: reduction in ice cream consumption, emergence of cost efficient regional players, and the lack of a quality distribution system. After analyzing the situation, we recommend a strategy that aims to grow sales through the earning of market share, and improving the distribution network. Porter s Five Forces Model Industry Rivalry Industry rivalry is high. The ice cream industry is fragmented; 300 producers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To succeed in this strategy, Ice Fili needs to do two things. First, it needs to broadcast its commitment to follow the legacy of the traditional Russian ice cream makers and inspire consumers to cherish and value traditional Russian ice cream making method, thus creating stronger brand equity. Second, Ice Fili needs to restructure its current distribution system. Nestle already has its products twice as available as Ice Fili. Summation of Key Problems 1) Competition: Baskin amp; Robbins and Haagen Dazs have already become incumbents in the premium ice cream space. Regional players have a big cost advantage so a price war or a move into a low cost strategy would be difficult. 2) Distribution: Ice Fili s products have fairly limited availability. Distribution was also highlighted as a factor for the failure of other players in the Russian ice cream market Reccomendation Possible Strategies The main goal of our recommendation is to stop the decline of Ice Fili s return on equity which has fallen from 27.3% in 1996 to 14.4% in 2001 (Figure 1, Appendix). We will look to do this through a combination of sales growth and margin expansion. We outline several possible options, and choose one which looks to be the most optimal: 1) Focus on a low cost approach to grow sales 2) Focus on restaurants and café s to improve ... The Nervous System The human body is made up of many systems. The integumentary system, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the endocrine system, the cardiovascular system and finally; the nervous system. In this literary review we will be discussing Motor Neurone Disease which is a disorder of the nervous system. The nervous system is a multipurpose, integrated system which is made up of many parts (Walsh, 2002). The nervous system controls and co ordinates all parts of the body and contains the higher human functions such as memory and reasoning (Walsh, 2002). It also provides a complex communication system between the body s external and internal environments (Walsh, 2002). The nervous system is broken down into two systems, the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system (Walsh, 2002). The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system consists of the spinal and cranial nerves (Walsh, 2002). 1.1 Nerves A neurone which is also called a nerve cell is the functional and structural unit of the nervous system ... The cause of Motor Neurone Disease is unknown and there is no cure at present (IMNDA, 2015).Statistically Motor Neurone Disease is higher in people between the ages of fifty five and seventy seven (Marsden, 2011). Around ten percent of the patients below the age of forty five develop the disease and twenty percent of people over the age of seventy develop the disease but it can develop in people at any age but is out of the ordinary (Marsden, 2011). • 28. Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought David Wolkoff English 9CP/Western Civ. Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from these ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of John Locke and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it today would not exist. The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas that existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are ... • 29. Descartes And Spinoza On Nature Of God When it comes to life s unanswerable questions, philosophers have always been prepared to provide possible explanations on what they believe and try to further discuss difficult topics. This is certainly the case when it comes to Descartes and Spinoza, who are both adamant that their views provide the correct context and insight on their opinions of God. In Readings in Modern Philosophy by Ariew and Watkins, it is revealed that while both philosophers tend to agree on opinions like God being infinite, there are many reasons why Descartes and Spinoza disagree on the nature of God and their opinion of substance, for example, Descartes believes that there is more than one type of substance, while Spinoza argues that God is the only substance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This goes back to the idea of God being infinite because he acknowledges that a substance like God will always persist regardless of if anyone was there to think him into existence. In addition, the view that God is a morally good and just substance plays a significant role in Descartes beliefs, without it, many of his ideas wouldn t be as secure, such as his beliefs of physical objects, he explains this when he states, Now there clearly is in me a passive faculty of sensing, that is, a faculty for receiving and knowing the ideas of sensible things; but I could not use it unless there also existed, either in me or in something else, a certain active faculty of producing or bringing about these ideas... (RMP, 51). This is one way that Descartes argues that the nature of God is supremely good. It shows that Descartes doesn t think that God is a deceiver, this is important because it revelas how he views God s nature, as an inherently good because he explains that if we are deceived by God then he must not be real because God is not a deceiver. Alternatively, Spinoza s ideas of the nature of God differ greatly. To begin, Spinoza views God as the only infinite substance that has an infinite amount of distinct attributes. He believes that God exists necessarily and that created substances are nonexistent. He defines substance by stating, Substance which we understand to be through itself supremely perfect and in which nothing can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Homosexuality Is A Way Of Living Life Homosexuality is one the most controversial topics societies have faced and continue to face. The beliefs of many people around the world about the nature of homosexuality, go into two patterns called choice and gene. Is homosexuality a choice or a gene? Are we born the way we are? Or are we shaped by the environmental factors while we grow up? The origin of homosexuality has been discussed intensively around the world. Gay is a sexual orientation, but the fact of acting on it is a choice. However, every person has their own views regarding this concept throughout time. Some people believe that homosexuality is a way of living life that people choose. On the other hand, some say that homosexuality is a gene or even worse a disease. The hypotheses that homosexuality is a disease that can and need to be cured has been supported by multiple people around the world. Throughout history, research, doctors and philosophers have spent time debating about the origin of homosexuality. Edmund Bergler was one of them, an Austrian born American psychoanalyst whose book covered such topics as childhood development, mid life crises and human behavior in general. He was the most important theorist of homosexuality in the 1950s. In 1951, Bergler wrote Homosexuality: Disease or Way of life to deeply explore the origin of homosexuality. In the book, he argues that homosexuality is a disease and not a choice, an argument that I do not accept. According to him, homosexuals are a small ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. What Are The Rhetorical Techniques Used In Sicko By... Sicko is a narrative created by Michael Moore that puts an spotlights on medical insurance in America. The narrative gives an inside and out comprehension and examination of the endless human services issues in America. A large part of these issues result from the defilement show in the American medical coverage industry. The message that Michael Moore is attempting to get crosswise over to his crowd is that of the everlasting status inside the American healthcare insurance framework. Mr. Moore Sicko documentary was compelling because he incorporates two rhetorical techniques which are pathos and logos. He thinks about and differentiate, questions American s ethics, and offers meetings to get the watcher to agree with the contention with these techniques. First, he uses pathos in his documentary by capturing the audience attention by comparing and contrasting our health care to other countries who have universal healthcare like France, Britain, Canada, and Cuda. Within a couple of scenes of the film Moore had demonstrated a man sowing his own knee, a man who needed to choose which finger he needed to pay for to get settled, and a 79 year old man as yet attempting to pay for his remedies. This influences the watcher to express sensitivity for the general population affected by medical coverage organizations. Poignancy is Michael Moore s principle system to get his contention over.
