Victimization in Margaret Atwood s ¡§Rape Fantasies¡¨
Rape Fantasies: Female Victimization
Margaret Atwood¡¦s ¡§Rape Fantasies¡¨, a monologue of a woman discus her concern about the topic
of rape, demonstrates the power struggle between men and women and how female are victimized by
the society. Furthermore, Atwood talks about the importance of having ¡§voice¡¨ as a power or
solution to victimization.
In the story, there is an exploration of female vulnerability, and victimization in the rape fantasies.
Atwood through using the voice of the first person narrator, Estelle, to show that women have been
unconsciously accept the idea, which is created by the media, that women are inferior and submissive
to men. Estelle is critical to the romantic fantasies of her coworkers as they accept the ... Show more

Therefore, the imagined rapists fail to rape Estelle as there is sharing and emotional communication
between both sexes. Although the society is changing, female are still burdened by the social
inequalities and rules. They have the right to reject all the inequalities by speaking out, saying ¡§no¡¨,
but most of the female fail to do that. Likewise, the issue of power is also concerned in ¡§Where are
you going? Where have you been?¡¨. In the final scene of it, Arnold gains domination in his talking
while Connie only makes short sentences. He uses psychological manipulation to threat Connie who
fails to find any ways to resist that she surrenders and satisfies the desires of the man. Connie fails to
find her ¡§voice¡¨ to fight the threat. Voice is very important to female. So Atwood emphasizes the
idea of communication in her story to demonstrate that there is an equal share of power between men
and women if both sides talk and listen to each other. Through talking and listening, men and women
can come to understand one another. Thus, crime and pain can be avoided due to the mutual sympathy.
Women can never fight their humiliating figure under the domination of men with their physical
strength because it is not comparable to man. Voice is the solution to victimization. If a woman cannot
find her voice, she can only end up to be a stereotyping woman who is being treated

Identity In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist
The texts Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar, as well as Sherman
Alexie s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven all ask us to consider the relationship
between rhetoric and identity. When thinking about identity it depends on the person. I would define
identity as the key characteristics about each of us that we define ourselves by. How we want to be
seen by others, and how we think others see us. What parts of ourselves we choose to keep private and
what parts we choose to let people see. What we believe morally and dream wise. Our existence and
worth as a human both soul and body which is not determined or differentiated by anything you do or
fail to do, but is inherent and vital in you from your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the indians have drinking and drug problems which these problems are basic personal
problems that they have. In the stories the characters will often be in one place out of the ordinary,
after that they will be transported back in time to one distinct memory. This sort of thing works in
these stories because, it reminds me of how our minds work. It makes me think about how people are
not always there. In class sometimes I stare off into space as most people probably do because they are
thinking about things. Our dreams and memories drift in and out of our minds throughout the day, and
I believe this is what Alexie is trying to demonstrate with the characters in the various stories because
it makes them seem more real and it makes the stories seem like they are coming to life. If Alexie did
not reply on this rhetoric strategy the characters would collapse and be dull, but the characters is what
gives the story life. In the stories the characters go through several dilemmas such as in the first
chapter families fighting with each other, substance abuse as well as detestable living conditions.
When they search for something it lead many of the characters in his book to imagine, desire, and look
for something that they did not already have, and to

Porter Five Forces
Nowadays, five forces by Michael Porter can be analyzed to when discussed about competition The
following are the forces of port services industry especially in Indonesia based on Porter five model
competition:
1. Threat of New Entrants high
a. New entrants
Possibility of new entrants from more than 90 terminals operator licenses (BUP) as a consequence of
the new shipping regulation No. 17/2008, some are granted to new players, including foreign
investment, local governments and private companies
b. Entry barrier
Quite high due to high investment for port facilities
2. Rivalry Among Existing Companies medium

Prehensile Tail Research Paper
Prehensile Tails
Creatures have a variety of traits that make them unique. This can include traits such as having scales
as opposed to fur or having claws or opposable thumbs. As traits are passed down from generation to
generation, individuals of the species that have traits that help them survive and thrive in their current
environment tend to reproduce more. This leads to a higher frequency of the population having this
desireable trait. When a creature has a trait that allows them to survive and thrive in their environment,
this trait is called an adaptation. (OpenStax, 2013)
One example of an adaptation that helps creatures thrive in their environment is the prehensile tail. A
prehensile tail is a tail that can be used to grasp objects in the environment. For ... Show more content

Through natural selection these prehensile tailed mammals were able to reproduce and the adaptation
was passed on to their offspring.
(Mirajkar, 1970)
Regarding adaptations, there are two main types; homologous adaptations and analogous adaptations.
In a homologous adaptation, creatures with the adaptation are all thought to come from a common
ancestor. In an analogous adaptation, the adaptation develops separately because of a common
necessity, but a common ancestor is not present. Prehensile tails would be considered analogous.
While many monkeys have a common ancestor, prehensile tails have also been seen in reptiles and
fish. The structure of each different type of tail is radically different. Some lizards have detachable
prehensile tails, while the prehensile tail of most monkeys is an extension of vertebrae from their
spinal cord. This suggests that they do not share a common ancestor. (Homologies and Analogies,
n.d.)
Another way to classify adaptations is into convergent and divergent evolutions.
In a divergent evolution, a common ancestor eventually gives way to several different adaptations.
Adaptations that come from a common ancestor are called

The Great Technological Evolution And Emergence Of Social...
In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States went into defensive
mode, increasing surveillance and dismantling privacy rights. The Patriot Act was hastily passed just a
month later in October 2001 and it severely limited the privacy of Americans and gave unprecedented
power to the government and private agencies to track innocent Americans, turning regular citizens
into suspects.5 In addition, the great technological evolution and emergence of social media that
occurred round the same time, and shortly thereafter, created the perfect storm for the emergence of
the largely unregulated surveillance society that we live in today.6 The result is digitization of people s

Without government knowledge, Finch begins to save this data and he recruits Reese to investigate the
people, identified only by their social security number, that The Machine has determined will be
involved in the crime. While the series evolves into a critique of the artificial intelligence that is The
Machine, the pilot episode provides an example that is the epitome of post 9/11 surveillance on U.S
television. In the pilot, Reese is given access to all surveillance feeds that computer genius, Finch, can
access, in order to investigate the imminent crimes detected by The Machine. This includes phone
lines, whether in use or not, and government and private surveillance cameras. He uses this access to
determine whether the person of interest is the criminal or the victim, after which he ascertains their
plan and then prevents the crime from happening. Just thirteen years after The Truman Show, Person
of Interest provides a clear critical shift from that of The Truman Show. The show presents the
pervasiveness of modern surveillance, to the point that its production style and images remediate
surveillance technology by using digital targets superimposed over the filmed footage to track those
flagged by The Machine, as if the viewer was watching a real time surveillance feed. However, it
never suggests that the extent of this surveillance is negatively excessive. Rather, it suggests that such
surveillance, which is so

Wal-Mart Case Study Essays
1. What were the main elements of the control system that Sam Walton created?
It is evident that Sam Walton believed in the importance of control systems in an organization; as he
established certain strategic control systems in the company. Walton wanted everyone within the
organization to be committed to Wal Mart s goal total customer satisfaction , and the strategic control
systems were set accordingly.
There are various elements of control systems used in Wal Mart which are:
Personal Control

Wal Mart s control systems help achieve the basic building block and high competitive advantage:
Efficiency
One of the control systems in Wal Mart is the financial control system that provided managers with
day to day feedback about the business performance; where the financial performance of each store
and even each department within each store can be tracked and monitored through a sophisticated
companywide satellite system. This control system helps sharing profitability information and
inventory turnover rate among associates; which as a result gives them an in depth insight into the
retailing business and work on improving it.
Furthermore, the above control system helps identifying if there is an underperforming store in the
business in order to take immediate action; where managers and associates meet to find solutions and
raise performance. Besides, top managers pay routine visits to stores with lower performance to lend
their expertise. Another interesting strategy is that every month top managers fly to different Wal Mart
stores in order to inspect their performance, and they meet on Saturdays to discuss financial results
and future implications.
On the other hand, another control system the organization is their rewarding strategy; as they link
their performance and abilities to meet goals and targets to pay raise and promotion.

Liver Synthesis
Without the liver, the human body would not be able to regulate chemical levels in the blood. The
liver is composed of eight segments that form two main lobes. Our body relies on the production of
bile to help break down fats, and the liver to process the blood to create nutrients useful for the body.
Regulating blood clotting, processing use of hemoglobin, glucose release and storage, and the
production of proteins are only a few of the many functions for the liver.
Storage is an important function of the liver and is needed to provide a constant supply of vitamins
and minerals to the body. The liver as an organ of the immune system, the aids the body and fights off
foreign bodies by Kupffer cells. Kupffer cells line the sinusoids and capture/digest cellular debris,

As blood passes through the hepatic portal vein, hepatocytes monitor the blood and make sure all
impurities are cleaned before the blood exits the liver. By neutralizing the toxins to form activated
intermediates, the enzyme system can then break down the toxin chemicals lowering the toxicity by
hydrolysis, reduction, and oxidation. The product of these reactions is antioxidants, which can use
damage if too many are produced. As this is occurring, conjugation pathway is taking place, which
adds another substance like cysteince or glycine to make the toxin less harmful, water soluble, and
able to be excreted in waste.
In conclusion, from detoxifying to body to metabolism and storage of important nutrients to the
production of bile the liver preforms a lot of important functions. When damaged by substances such
as alcohol, the liver is not able to properly perform its functions and can lead to a variety of diseases
or permanent damage. Awareness of these functions and what can cause damage to it is a good way to
keep your liver healthy and

CHF occurs when the heart is no longer able to adequately pump blood causing a decrease in nutrients

However, in this pt s case, she suffered from severe edema and fluid build up in the lungs due to the

This transfer of ions is what generates the electrical impulse of the heart and causes the heart to act as
a single unit instead of individual cells (Marieb Hoehn, 2013). Cardiac conduction occurs because
there are gap junctions for ions to pass through and because of the heart s intrinsic conduction system,
which is composed of non contractile cardiac cells that are specifically designed to start and distribute
electric impulses through the cardiac cells so that depolarization and contractions are orderly and
sequential. The contractile cells sustain stable membrane resting potential when they are unstimulated,
however, the resting potential of the autorhythmic cells, that create the intrinsic conduction system, is
unstable and is constantly depolarizing, which is called pacemaker potentials and initiate the action
potential that causes the heart to contract (Marieb Hoehn, 2013). The pace maker potential occurs
because of the ion channels which causes hyperpolarization at the end of the action potentials. This
hyperpolarization causes the K+ channels to close while simultaneously opening the Na+ channels,
which allows an imbalance of K+ and Na+ to occur making the cardiac cells to become more positive.
When the pacemaker potential is reached at around

New Learning Opportunities for Adult Learners
The concept of adults as learners emerged both in this country and in Europe shortly after World War
I; however, only in the last few decades has the theory of adult learning matured. Knowles, Tough,
Houle, and Park, among others, have written extensively on the idea of the adult learner. In Tennant s
book (1997), he discussed Knowles adult learning theory. Knowles used the term andragogy to label
adult learning theory. The andragogical model of the adult learner is based on the assumptions that
adults need to know; adults have a need to be self directed learners and have a self concept of being

The WWW can provide stimulating material to enhance and enrich the learning experience by using
graphics, sound, video and virtual environments. It supports learning in own space, own pace, and

The potential benefits include personalized instruction, active learning, instant feedback, real world
simulation, as well as faster and more effective teaching and empowerment of learners (McManus,
1995). With all these benefits, WWW as an instruction delivery medium can indeed enhance learning
and meet the needs of adult learners. In addition, media are not mere vehicles that deliver instruction
but they are important components of the learning process. Studies have shown certain media
attributes are necessary for specific learning tasks, learning situations, and learners characteristics.

Industrial America from the American Steel Industry to the Early 1970 s
The steel industry has been profoundly important to the development of USA by its value of output,
input to the American manufacturing industries and in terms of the extent of its employment in the
past. It s been important because of its political clout of its corporations and finally it s been important
for strategic reasons.
Background to the American Steel Industry
The industry dates from mid 19th century when it grew out of the iron industry. There was huge
demand for steel following the end of the Civil War and the building of the great trans continental
railway. The industry centred in Pittsburgh where the classic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

transported the ores east wards through the Great Lakes. Technological advance allowed lower grade
taconite ores to be beneficiated and so enabled them to bear the transport costs to the steel mills

Demand for Steel: This continued to rise in aggregate throughout much of the first half of the 20th
century. The nature of the demand altered however. Much less steel was now needed for rails, but
structural steel became increasingly important as did rods, wire, tubes and pipes; steel was needed for
tinplate and also very significant amounts were demanded by the transport industries.
Organisation of the industry: At the turn of the century, there was much horizontal integration and
merger activity reflecting, amongst other things, a desire to reduce competition and to increase the
scale of enterprises. Some companies became involved in vertical integration, being particularly
anxious to secure their supplies of coking coal and iron ore (the US relied very heavily on indigenous

That s the conclusion of researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health. Their study, which
was published in the journal Science, relied on public records to identify children who had been
physically abused back in the 1960s and 70s. In one of the longest running studies of its kind, the
researchers followed up several times, not only with the original abused children, now in their late 40s
and early 50s, but also with their children. Which stated that children who were abused were likely to
not abuse their own children. That is the case in Push. Precious was fighting to become a better
mother for her two children, she wanted to make sure that they were all set and wouldn t have to
struggle like she did and go through what she did. Although I would have thought she would have had
some animosity towards her children since her father put her into that position but she loves them
more than anything, even though her daughter has down syndrome. A mother s love is something she
never lost.
The effects of abuse on children are detrimental. They affect a child s upbringing and takes away the
importance of the nurturing and upbringing of a child. No abuse under any circumstances are very
okay. Mental abuse is just as bad as physical abuse worse even in my opinion.

Feminist Analysis Of Medea
Classical Greek society placed great emphasis on it citizens fulfilling their social and moral
obligations on the principle of sophrosyne, that is finding the balance between their reason and
passions. Controversially, the eponymous protagonist in Euripides tragedy, Medea, challenges all
beliefs of balance seeking instead to exact her retribution on Jason. In the process, Euripides explores
the characters rationalisations and motives behind their decisions and its repercussions. Jason leaves
Medea for fortune and prestige ultimately being the catalyst behind Medea s determination to seek
vengeance. In doing so, Jason describes her as a lioness not a woman , highlighting the potential

After Medea is betrayed, she epitomises perfectly the proverbial woman scorned determined to ensure
a bloodbath as she sinks into abysmal hopelessness and despair. At each stage of her scheme, Medea
exercises careful judgement, knowing exactly what to say at the right time to the right person. She is
able to manipulate Creon, Aegus and ultimately Jason to formulate circumstances and opportunities to
seek retribution and to reciprocate the injustices that befall her. Medea s meticulously cunning
revenge, cursing her children of a bewitched mother is judiciously complemented by a pathological
lack of remorse for her husband and children. Although the ancient and modern audience may agree in
Jason deserving punishment to some extent, it is Medea s act of infanticide is where the line is drawn.
However, in leaving Medea unpunished, Euripides disposes the traditional theatrical rational
resolution for the villain but instead invokes a masterstroke of divine intervention using the device
deus ex machina allowing her to have good fortune and help from Helios and divine protection on her
side. This not only leaves the ancient and modern audience querying at society s obsession with
morality in the face of such an abjectly irrational denouement but simultaneously forces the audience
to question their own sense perception and justice. Medea s actions are Dionysian guided. Her
emotions are liberated, shattering all sense of society s moral boundaries that confines her. The
dichotomy between a lioness and a woman aims to highlight Medea as a powerful and regal creature.
As a lioness, she is able to truly be a mistress of the systematic dysfunctional Greek society that

The Endangered Species Act
These expenses are rarely tax deductible, leaving landowners uncompensated for the prohibited use of
their property. The lack of financial support from the federal government undoubtedly creates a rift
between the Fish and Wildlife Service and private landowners. Moreover, private landowners shoulder
a regulatory burden in addition to financial burden as a result of the Endangered Species Act. Section
9 of the Act outlines prohibited private landowner actions, including the taking of an endangered
species. The Fish and Wildlife Service defines a taking as the significant habitat modification or
degradation that actually kills or injures wildlife by significantly impairing essential behavior patterns,
including breeding, feeding, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Researchers believe that this difference is the result of preemptive habitat destruction by private
landowners responding to the risk of regulatory requirements, also known as shoot, shovel, and shut
up (Wilcove et al., 1996). They state that, landowners are afraid that if they take actions that attract
new endangered species to their land or increase the populations of the endangered species that are
already there, their reward for doing so will be more regulatory restrictions on the use of their property
(Wilcove et al., 1996). The probability that the Fish and Wildlife Service will detect a species
significantly increases the level of habitat destruction by private landowners, indicating that a fear of
regulation is the motivation for this behavior. One frequently referenced case involves Ben Cone, a
disgruntled landowner from North Carolina who faced heavy land use restrictions resulting from the
presence of 12 Red Cockaded Woodpecker colonies on his property. The Red Cockaded Woodpecker,
or Leuconotopicus borealis, was very populous in the sandhills region of North Carolina for hundreds
of years, inhabiting cavities in mature longleaf pine forests (Walters, 1991). Because the species was
found on his property, Cone was restricted from harvesting 1,500 acres of prime timber, worth over $2
million (Stroup, 1995). Cone became extremely frustrated with the federal government, famously

Importance Of Apple Trademarks And Patents
1 Why are trademarks and Patents so important to a company like Apple? What benefits do they
provide? What kind of role did Apple patents play in its case against Samsung?
Trademarks and Patents are important to big companies like Apple because the trademark gives them
the right to decide who and who cannot use their patented invention. This benefits them because if
they were not to have the trademark, anyone could recreate their product without the company s
consent and make money off of the product and they can sue other companies with their patent. People
could resell Apples products in mass amounts legally without a patent. Apple s patent protected their
creative and inventive rights on their product. Against Samsung, it protected Apples creative rights
over their product, the Iphone. After Apple released their new Iphone, Samsung recreated it and
therefore they put themselves at risk of litigation. The Trademark law allowed Apple to sue both the
company and the distributors of the product because of recall.
2 How is Apple changing the field of Trademark protection? What is a non traditional trademark?
Why is Apple in pursuit of such trademark?
Apple is changing the field of Trademark protection because of the new exceptions involved in
Trademark protections. Now companies can defend their products patent for the shape and feel of it.
The Ipod shape Trademark has given Apple a new weapon to knock out the competition. This
Trademark is known as a non traditional

Bubbles
I once had a pet fish and I named him Bubbles. Bubbles was my very first fish and I have some very
fond memories of him. My first memory of Bubbles was when I got him at the store. The day I went
to the store I remember walking up to the fish tank and picking out which fish I wanted. I decided to
pick the smallest one because I wanted to see how much he could grow. I told my dad, I want the
smallest one! The pet store owner caught the smallest one and put him into a plastic bag. Me and my
brother Dillon were very excited because it was our very fish. We took him home and put him in the
new fish tank that we bought. Dillon and I were in such awe of the fish that we sat for hours just
staring at the fish swim around. My dad told us, Although that fish may be small now it will grow to
be big someday! From that day forward we watched Bubbles as he grew and grew becoming bigger
each day we fed him. A few weeks after we got Bubbles me and my brother decided that we wanted
Bubbles to have a friend. We saw the Bubbles looked lonely so we wanted him to have a friend to
swim around with so we asked Dad if we could get another fish. ... Show more content on

Essay about Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia
It is a frightening disorder that strikes about one percent of the world population. It surfaces most
frequently during puberty and has the potential to forever destroy the lives of the people who are
unfortunate enough to be its victim. The disorder is schizophrenia and it manifests itself by disturbing
normal psychiatric behavior. The symptoms of schizophrenia are characterized by both positive and
negative symptoms. Positive symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and other unusual or
disorganized behavior. Unresponsiveness, lack of activity, and loss of interest characterize negative
symptoms. Though it is possible for doctors to diagnose and treat patients with schizophrenia, the
causes of schizophrenia are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Perhaps what is most convincing, though, are the recent links made between schizophrenia and
chemical imbalances in the brain. There are four main hypotheses that support the theory that
biological chemistry is responsible for causing schizophrenia. The first is named the Membrane
Hypothesis. Observations of persons suffering from schizophrenia suggest that a defect or impairment
in nerve cell membranes could affect how neurotransmitter receptors send messages across the nerve
synapses. Also, there is evidence of decreased enzymes and fatty acids among schizophrenics. (2)
A second hypothesis is the Single Carbon Hypothesis. This theory explains that the single carbon
folate serves as a metabolic pathway for several reactions in the brain. One of these reactions is the
synthesis of methionine. It has been found that methionine metabolism is defective in many sufferers
of schizophrenia. This suggests that folate is somehow related to the disorder, though exact
relationship remains unknown. (2)
The NDMA Receptor Hypothesis is another suspect in the search for the cause of schizophrenia.
According to research, it is possible that NDMA receptor dysfunction may induce schizophrenic
symptoms due to the fact that NDMA receptors operate with glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter.
Drugs that affect NDMA receptors, such as ketamine and phencyclidine, have been found to produce
hallucinations. Also, neuroleptic drugs like clozapoine have

Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights Essay
Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights In Wuthering Heights, we see tragedies follow one by one, most of
which are focused around Heathcliff, the antihero of the novel. After the troubled childhood Heathcliff
goes through, he becomes embittered towards the world and loses interest in everything but Catherine
Earnshaw his childhood sweetheart whom he had instantly fallen in love with. and revenge upon
anyone who had tried to keep them apart. The novel begins with a few short introduction chapters
which Bronte had most likely used to illustrate how incompetent the character of Lockwood was, and
to foreshadow what was to come in later chapters. After these, it begins to immediately demonstrate to
the reader the plight of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the two of them can comfort each other blossomed and bloomed not into the rose which would have
been expected from such a strong, passionate love, but into the twisted thorn bush of Heathcliff s dark
revenge. After Mr. Earnshaws death Catherine s elder brother, Hindley, became the new proprietor of
Wuthering Heights. Under Hindley s guiding hand, Heathcliff was sent out into the fields with the
servants and was no longer aloud to be educated along with Catherine. This was the first time that the
two of them were separated, and it later led to Heathcliff s wreaking his revenge upon Hindley by first
driving him to drink, taking his land with gambling debts, and corrupting his son Hareton in the same
way that Hindley had done to Heathcliff, but to an exaggerated degree. The next victim of Heathcliff s
revenge was Edgar Linton. Once Heathcliff began working in the field, Hindley saw to it that his sister
would never lower herself and take an orphan gypsy boy as a husband. He does this by seeing to it that
Catherine spends as much time with Edgar and Isabella Linton as possible. With them, she becomes
even more spoiled then she had been and escalated from prissy to being an all out brat. She soon after

Models Of Pricing Models
1.5.2 Pricing models
Even though, there has been considerable diversity in the past modelling efforts, there are noticeable
patterns of the models objectives and variables taken into account (Monroe and Mazumdar, 1988).
The pricing models can be broadly classified into six groups (Monroe and Mazumdar, 1988): (1)
single period pricing models (2) dynamic pricing models (3) price promotion and discount models (4)
product line pricing (5) price and other marketing mix variables and (6) price and individual choices.
In general, single period pricing models aim to solve certain marketing problems by selecting a price
that maximises single period profits (Monroe and Mazumdar, 1988). Even though, there are numerous
diverse models in this class, the common feature about them is that they ... Show more content on

Cystic Fibroblasts
Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells that play an important role in the wound healing process. These
cells are responsible for releasing inflammatory agents that recruit white blood cells to areas of
damaged tissue. Fibroblasts also respond to these chemicals and differentiate into myofibroblasts.
These myofibroblasts are characterized by their up regulated rate of extracellular matrix component
production and their ability to physically manipulate the extracellular matrix. When the wound healing
process becomes unregulated, this results in what is referred to as a fibrotic response (Kendall). As a
result fibrosis, or the thickening and scarring of connective tissues, occurs. Fibrosis is the excess
deposition of ECM components like collagen and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first experiment we ran was the α smooth muscle actin (asma) stain. The purpose of this stain was
to use a primary and secondary antibody to indirectly stain the microfilaments that characterize
myofibroblasts. Under a fluorescent microscope, this will provide a visual representation of how many
fibroblasts in our samples had differentiated into myofibroblasts. To set up for this experiment,
fibroblasts were plated on coverslips and incubated for seven days, to reach 100% confluency, in
either the presence or absence of allopurinol. After one week the coverslips were fixed with methanol
and the first antibody, a mouse anti human asma, was applied onto the coverslip and kept refrigerated
overnight. The next day the coverslips were rinsed with PBS, all rinses are performed with PBS, and
the second antibody, a goat anti mouse rhodamine, was applied to the coverslips for thirty minutes in a
dark place. Lastly, after another rinse, a DAPI counterstain, which would interact with the DNA in the
nucleus of every fibroblast to make them visible, was applied for fifteen minutes and rinsed. Then the
coverslips were mounted onto slides with glycerol and looked at under the fluorescent microscope.
The nuclei of all of the cells lit up blue and the microfilaments in the differentiated fibroblasts,
myofibroblasts, lit up bright

The Unique Language of Jamaica
Introduction
It is often said that Jamaicans have a unique language. Some may say Jamaicans do not have a
language of their own. Jamaicans official language however is Standard English. However there has
been much confusion in the language we speak because we sometimes or often times speak in what is
called Patois, Creole or even Ungrammatical English. This however is not considered a language.
Patois is not a native language, it is a second language. Patois is a combination of English and African
languages. Patois however reflects on the struggle and history of slavery and the ancestors. This
language however has an effect on Jamaica since being Jamaicans are descendants of Africa. Despite
the fact that patois is not Jamaicans native language it represents their culture and history. Patois have
been used in Jamaicans day to day life to communicate. However this is mostly used in casual
conversations. When having a formal conversation Standard English is used to communicate.
There are three types of patois. These three types of patois are basolet, mesolet and acrolet. Basolet is
the deep patois. This is where person speaks patois only. Acrolet is Standard Jamaican English. This is
where the person speaks only Standard English. As it relates to Mesolet this is a combination of patois
and Standard Jamaican English. Mesolet is however mostly used in present Jamaica.
Patois is still been used now in Jamaica even though Standard English should be used because of how
it was passed

Sociological Explanations Of Social Status
Social status is the position of a person or family, within the society. A person can earn their social
status by their own achievements, which is known as achieved status, which can be achieved through
education, occupation or marital status. Alternatively; your social class would be based on sex, age,
race, family relationships, or birth which is known as ascribed status. People of the UK now fit into
seven social classes, which research conducted by the BBC suggest; More than 161,000 people took
part in the Great British Class Survey, the largest study of class in the UK. (BBC, 2013)

Our social class or the way we act tend to affect the ways in which we are treated by teachers; by the
police; by friends; by employers; by sexual partners; and by many others in society. When people treat
others differently cause of their class, this is form of a personal discrimination or stereotyping and is
done without getting to know a person first. It can also take the form of structural discrimination as
explained by D, HILL Taking place on a systematic, repetitive, embedded nature within particular
social structures such as schooling, housing, employment, credit agencies. (Hill, 2016) Social class is
argued to influence a child or a young person education because the people who are in a lower social
status are not able to afford private education. Private education is thought to be better for a child, as it
has far fewer pupils in each class compared to local authority schools. Higher education is also harder
for a child that is not from a higher social status family, as poorer families that need the extra money
or have seen their child benefits cut due to the child reaching the age of 18 tend to feel pushed to go
from education straight to paid work. There were 3.9 million children living in poverty in the UK in
2014 15, that s 9 children in a classroom of 30. (2016, 2000) Or they do not do as well in higher
education because to afford to live, they still need to earn money while studying. Higher education is
the key path to a better paid occupation and if not able to attend due to worries like money, childcare
or your school test results it will be a lot harder to find above minimum wage

Coral Reef Deforestation
Where have all the coral reefs gone? Reef deforestation has been occurring around the globe at an
alarming rate and is affecting us more than we think. These beautiful reefs are a diverse marine
version of a tropical rainforest and is an ecosystem that homes thousands of species. Coral reefs grow
in oceans that are clear and clean and they need the sun for photosynthesis. Unfortunately, this
underwater paradise is becoming less and less of an attraction due to the destruction of them. Places
such as Mexico, Australia and Florida are having shortages of income due to the lack of coral reefs.
As well as the fact that industries aren t getting a steady income, marine animals are suffering too.
When coral reefs are destroyed, all the marine life that the coral reef supported now doesn t have a

reefs is pollution and the overuse of pesticides/fertilizers. You may wonder why pesticides/fertilizers
can affect coral reefs but they do. The extra pesticides get absorbed into groundwater or end up in
surface runoff which leads right into lakes, rivers or oceans. These pesticides get eaten by algae and
enhances their growth, causing the corals to be suffocated. These pesticides are being consumed by
marine life that is located near the reefs. This can result in marine animals dying or getting

What Is The Most Beautiful Beach Essay
To say that I like beaches, would be a lie. Nothing in the world can aptly describe my love for rolling

Maybe it s the surreal beauty or maybe it is the rhythmic flow of seawater that is so calming and
upsetting at the same time, that it attracts me like a moth to a night lamp. They are indeed beautiful.
One can not disagree with this at all! Here s the list of one of the most beautiful beaches of the world.
In truth, there are hundreds of them, and to name just a few is an abomination, but nevertheless, let s

discourse, these questions even branching out into the fields psychology and biology. However, one
question about dreams that hasn t been asked is if the dream is a kind of art, and narrowing it down for
the purposes of this paper, if dreams are a kind of fiction. This question has effects and implications
and influences in so many fields of philosophy that answering it will be kept to the essentials of the

The next portion is to attempt to define what a fiction is, and here I will use Gregory Currie s essay
What is Fiction? In it, he argues that fictions are engaging in games of make belief, an idea present in
Kendall Walton s Fearing Fictionality article. The main crux of Currie s definition is intentionality. He
argues that the creator of the fiction not only intends to have the audience engage in games of make
belief but that they will also do it as a result of understanding that intention. He also argues that the
creator intends for the reader to make believe the fiction, through the uses of props, be it the sentences,
actors, et cetera. She intends them to make believe the fiction partly as a recognition of the intent to
make believe the work as a fiction. So the audience understands the work as fiction because they
perceive it as fiction. He argues that it can be recognized or perceived as fiction through the use of
advertisement that the work is a fiction, that the work includes elements familiar to fiction, or that the
author can explicitly state that a particular work is a fiction through deliberate word or stylistic
choices. He does make it clear that this intention can go awry, that the audience and community can
misconstrue the intention of the author, and can even go so far that the community around the fiction
attributes the status of fiction towards the fiction, regardless of the intention of the creator. It is

Victimization in Margaret Atwood s ¡§Rape Fantasies¡¨ Rape Fantasies: Female Victimization Margaret Atwood¡¦s ¡§Rape Fantasies¡¨, a monologue of a woman discus her concern about the topic of rape, demonstrates the power struggle between men and women and how female are victimized by the society. Furthermore, Atwood talks about the importance of having ¡§voice¡¨ as a power or solution to victimization. In the story, there is an exploration of female vulnerability, and victimization in the rape fantasies. Atwood through using the voice of the first person narrator, Estelle, to show that women have been unconsciously accept the idea, which is created by the media, that women are inferior and submissive to men. Therefore, the imagined rapists fail to rape Estelle as there is sharing and emotional communication between both sexes. Although the society is changing, female are still burdened by the social inequalities and rules. They have the right to reject all the inequalities by speaking out, saying ¡§no¡¨, but most of the female fail to do that. Likewise, the issue of power is also concerned in ¡§Where are you going? Where have you been?¡¨. In the final scene of it, Arnold gains domination in his talking while Connie only makes short sentences. He uses psychological manipulation to threat Connie who fails to find any ways to resist that she surrenders and satisfies the desires of the man. Connie fails to find her ¡§voice¡¨ to fight the threat. Voice is very important to female. So Atwood emphasizes the idea of communication in her story to demonstrate that there is an equal share of power between men and women if both sides talk and listen to each other. Through talking and listening, men and women can come to understand one another. Thus, crime and pain can be avoided due to the mutual sympathy. Women can never fight their humiliating figure under the domination of men with their physical strength because it is not comparable to man. Voice is the solution to victimization. If a woman cannot find her voice, she can only end up to be a stereotyping woman who is being treated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Identity In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist The texts Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar, as well as Sherman Alexie s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven all ask us to consider the relationship between rhetoric and identity. When thinking about identity it depends on the person. I would define identity as the key characteristics about each of us that we define ourselves by. How we want to be seen by others, and how we think others see us. What parts of ourselves we choose to keep private and what parts we choose to let people see. What we believe morally and dream wise. Our existence and worth as a human both soul and body which is not determined or differentiated by anything you do or fail to do, but is inherent and vital in you from your ... In the stories the characters will often be in one place out of the ordinary, after that they will be transported back in time to one distinct memory. This sort of thing works in these stories because, it reminds me of how our minds work. It makes me think about how people are not always there. In class sometimes I stare off into space as most people probably do because they are thinking about things. Our dreams and memories drift in and out of our minds throughout the day, and I believe this is what Alexie is trying to demonstrate with the characters in the various stories because it makes them seem more real and it makes the stories seem like they are coming to life. If Alexie did not reply on this rhetoric strategy the characters would collapse and be dull, but the characters is what gives the story life. In the stories the characters go through several dilemmas such as in the first chapter families fighting with each other, substance abuse as well as detestable living conditions. • 5. Prehensile Tail Research Paper Prehensile Tails Creatures have a variety of traits that make them unique. This can include traits such as having scales as opposed to fur or having claws or opposable thumbs. As traits are passed down from generation to generation, individuals of the species that have traits that help them survive and thrive in their current environment tend to reproduce more. This leads to a higher frequency of the population having this desireable trait. When a creature has a trait that allows them to survive and thrive in their environment, this trait is called an adaptation. Through natural selection these prehensile tailed mammals were able to reproduce and the adaptation was passed on to their offspring. (Mirajkar, 1970) Regarding adaptations, there are two main types; homologous adaptations and analogous adaptations. In a homologous adaptation, creatures with the adaptation are all thought to come from a common ancestor. In an analogous adaptation, the adaptation develops separately because of a common necessity, but a common ancestor is not present. Prehensile tails would be considered analogous. While many monkeys have a common ancestor, prehensile tails have also been seen in reptiles and fish. The structure of each different type of tail is radically different. Some lizards have detachable prehensile tails, while the prehensile tail of most monkeys is an extension of vertebrae from their spinal cord. This suggests that they do not share a common ancestor. (Homologies and Analogies, n.d.) Another way to classify adaptations is into convergent and divergent evolutions. In a divergent evolution, a common ancestor eventually gives way to several different adaptations. Adaptations that come from a common ancestor are called ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States went into defensive mode, increasing surveillance and dismantling privacy rights. The Patriot Act was hastily passed just a month later in October 2001 and it severely limited the privacy of Americans and gave unprecedented power to the government and private agencies to track innocent Americans, turning regular citizens into suspects.5 In addition, the great technological evolution and emergence of social media that occurred round the same time, and shortly thereafter, created the perfect storm for the emergence of the largely unregulated surveillance society that we live in today.6 The result is digitization of people s personal and professional lives so that ... While the series evolves into a critique of the artificial intelligence that is The Machine, the pilot episode provides an example that is the epitome of post 9/11 surveillance on U.S television. In the pilot, Reese is given access to all surveillance feeds that computer genius, Finch, can access, in order to investigate the imminent crimes detected by The Machine. This includes phone lines, whether in use or not, and government and private surveillance cameras. He uses this access to determine whether the person of interest is the criminal or the victim, after which he ascertains their plan and then prevents the crime from happening. Just thirteen years after The Truman Show, Person of Interest provides a clear critical shift from that of The Truman Show. The show presents the pervasiveness of modern surveillance, to the point that its production style and images remediate surveillance technology by using digital targets superimposed over the filmed footage to track those flagged by The Machine, as if the viewer was watching a real time surveillance feed. However, it never suggests that the extent of this surveillance is negatively excessive. Rather, it suggests that such surveillance, which is so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another interesting strategy is that every month top managers fly to different Wal Mart stores in order to inspect their performance, and they meet on Saturdays to discuss financial results and future implications. The term CHF has widely been replaced by the terms acute failure and chronic failure because not all types of heart failure are accompanied by pulmonary congestion. However, in this pt s case, she suffered from severe edema and fluid build up in the lungs due to the failure. This transfer of ions is what generates the electrical impulse of the heart and causes the heart to act as a single unit instead of individual cells (Marieb Hoehn, 2013). Cardiac conduction occurs because there are gap junctions for ions to pass through and because of the heart s intrinsic conduction system, which is composed of non contractile cardiac cells that are specifically designed to start and distribute electric impulses through the cardiac cells so that depolarization and contractions are orderly and sequential. The contractile cells sustain stable membrane resting potential when they are unstimulated, however, the resting potential of the autorhythmic cells, that create the intrinsic conduction system, is unstable and is constantly depolarizing, which is called pacemaker potentials and initiate the action potential that causes the heart to contract (Marieb Hoehn, 2013). The pace maker potential occurs because of the ion channels which causes hyperpolarization at the end of the action potentials. This hyperpolarization causes the K+ channels to close while simultaneously opening the Na+ channels, which allows an imbalance of K+ and Na+ to occur making the cardiac cells to become more positive. Technological advance allowed lower grade taconite ores to be beneficiated and so enabled them to bear the transport costs to the steel mills further east. Demand for Steel: This continued to rise in aggregate throughout much of the first half of the 20th century. The nature of the demand altered however. Much less steel was now needed for rails, but structural steel became increasingly important as did rods, wire, tubes and pipes; steel was needed for tinplate and also very significant amounts were demanded by the transport industries. At each stage of her scheme, Medea exercises careful judgement, knowing exactly what to say at the right time to the right person. She is able to manipulate Creon, Aegus and ultimately Jason to formulate circumstances and opportunities to seek retribution and to reciprocate the injustices that befall her. Medea s meticulously cunning revenge, cursing her children of a bewitched mother is judiciously complemented by a pathological lack of remorse for her husband and children. Although the ancient and modern audience may agree in Jason deserving punishment to some extent, it is Medea s act of infanticide is where the line is drawn. However, in leaving Medea unpunished, Euripides disposes the traditional theatrical rational resolution for the villain but instead invokes a masterstroke of divine intervention using the device deus ex machina allowing her to have good fortune and help from Helios and divine protection on her side. This not only leaves the ancient and modern audience querying at society s obsession with morality in the face of such an abjectly irrational denouement but simultaneously forces the audience to question their own sense perception and justice. Medea s actions are Dionysian guided. Her emotions are liberated, shattering all sense of society s moral boundaries that confines her. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers believe that this difference is the result of preemptive habitat destruction by private landowners responding to the risk of regulatory requirements, also known as shoot, shovel, and shut up (Wilcove et al., 1996). They state that, landowners are afraid that if they take actions that attract new endangered species to their land or increase the populations of the endangered species that are already there, their reward for doing so will be more regulatory restrictions on the use of their property (Wilcove et al., 1996). The probability that the Fish and Wildlife Service will detect a species significantly increases the level of habitat destruction by private landowners, indicating that a fear of regulation is the motivation for this behavior. One frequently referenced case involves Ben Cone, a disgruntled landowner from North Carolina who faced heavy land use restrictions resulting from the presence of 12 Red Cockaded Woodpecker colonies on his property. The Red Cockaded Woodpecker, or Leuconotopicus borealis, was very populous in the sandhills region of North Carolina for hundreds of years, inhabiting cavities in mature longleaf pine forests (Walters, 1991). • 21. Importance Of Apple Trademarks And Patents 1 Why are trademarks and Patents so important to a company like Apple? What benefits do they provide? What kind of role did Apple patents play in its case against Samsung? Trademarks and Patents are important to big companies like Apple because the trademark gives them the right to decide who and who cannot use their patented invention. This benefits them because if they were not to have the trademark, anyone could recreate their product without the company s consent and make money off of the product and they can sue other companies with their patent. People could resell Apples products in mass amounts legally without a patent. Apple s patent protected their creative and inventive rights on their product. Against Samsung, it protected Apples creative rights over their product, the Iphone. After Apple released their new Iphone, Samsung recreated it and therefore they put themselves at risk of litigation. The Trademark law allowed Apple to sue both the company and the distributors of the product because of recall. 2 How is Apple changing the field of Trademark protection? What is a non traditional trademark? Why is Apple in pursuit of such trademark? Apple is changing the field of Trademark protection because of the new exceptions involved in Trademark protections. (4) Perhaps what is most convincing, though, are the recent links made between schizophrenia and chemical imbalances in the brain. There are four main hypotheses that support the theory that biological chemistry is responsible for causing schizophrenia. The first is named the Membrane Hypothesis. Observations of persons suffering from schizophrenia suggest that a defect or impairment in nerve cell membranes could affect how neurotransmitter receptors send messages across the nerve synapses. Also, there is evidence of decreased enzymes and fatty acids among schizophrenics. (2) A second hypothesis is the Single Carbon Hypothesis. This theory explains that the single carbon folate serves as a metabolic pathway for several reactions in the brain. One of these reactions is the synthesis of methionine. It has been found that methionine metabolism is defective in many sufferers of schizophrenia. This suggests that folate is somehow related to the disorder, though exact relationship remains unknown. (2) The NDMA Receptor Hypothesis is another suspect in the search for the cause of schizophrenia. According to research, it is possible that NDMA receptor dysfunction may induce schizophrenic symptoms due to the fact that NDMA receptors operate with glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. Drugs that affect NDMA receptors, such as ketamine and phencyclidine, have been found to produce hallucinations. Also, neuroleptic drugs like clozapoine have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
