Light and Dark in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness Essay...
Light and Dark in Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is a tragic tale of the white man s journey into the African jungle.
When we peel away the layers, however, a different journey is revealed we venture into the soul of
man, complete with the darkness of depravity as well as the wonderful. In this essence Conrad uses
this theme of light and darkness to contrast the civilized European world with the savage African
world in Heart of Darkness.
As aforementioned, within Heart of Darkness, Conrad uses light and dark to symbolize good and evil,
respectively.
It is whiteness that is truly sinister and evil, for it symbolizes the immoral scramble for loot by the
unscrupulous and unfeeling Belgian traders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As well as the obvious difference between the white and black, we can perhaps see how the boy is
trapped beneath and within white greed.
This leads me on to the struggle between the white people and the native tribes, which plays into the
next theme, that of light versus dark. From the very start, Marlow, the main character, creates a sense
of darkness.
At last, in its curved and imperceptible fall, the sun sank low, and from glowing white changed to a
dull red without rays and without heat, as if about to go out suddenly, stricken to death by the touch of
that gloom brooding over a crowd of men (Conrad 28).
The use of imperceptible shows the way in which darkness falls without distinction, it sneaks up on
the reader and indeed the scene. The dull red is lifeless and without energy and remains stagnant in its
nature. Finally the use of the description, stricken to death the finally notion of darkness at its worse is
given.
Marlow s use of a modern city is the first glimpse of what he considers civilized and more
importantly, uncivilized. Marlow begins by speaking of the occupants of the boat. He explains that the
owner of the boat is an accountant and a lawyer. This fact alludes to the idea of what might be
considered civilized. Furthermore the discussion he talks about the lights that are reflected in the
water. This also creates the idea that he considers himself and the passengers

Nfl s New York Giants And San 49ers
It s part of the game... Until it s you. Wide receiver Mario Manningham, who has played for the NFL s
New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, spoke these jarring words in response to commentary by
other players around the league indicating their beliefs that vicious, helmet to helmet hits are simply
part of the game (Battista). For many years, this view, in which concussions are actually considered to
be good in the way that they show one s toughness and dedication to football, has been shared by
many players and coaches throughout the league. The generally short length of the effects of
concussions (or at least the immediate effects) and the frequency at which they happen have
contributed to this dangerously careless perception of the ailment, to the point that some players
would be more likely to consider retirement due to a foot injury than due to a head injury ( AP survey:
Concussions not most ). Additionally, the lack of response to concussions by the National Football
League, revealed in a 2012 lawsuit filed against it by former players affected by concussions,
exacerbates the issue, along with their past attempts to hide the severity of concussions from players.
This view of concussions is extremely concerning, and while the NFL has taken steps forward
regarding concussion prevention and response through fines and regulations, improvement of the
players awareness of concussions, stricter responses to concussions by the league, and increased
support of players who

John Keats Poetry Synthesis Essay
For this source, the focus was on a section of the book that was about John Keats. The problem this
source is addressing is an emphasis on Keats and what he was focusing on when he wrote. It opens
with a quote from Keats: Difficulties nerve the spirit of a man. (298) This is a problem that this source
presents: the difficulties that Keats dealt with in his short life, specifically in the end, and how it
affected his poetry. The source speaks mostly about Keats love for nature and how sensuous he was
about it. Even though that is the opposite of the poems I want to focus on in my project, I still felt like
this source was informative in the ways of which Keats was inspired in his other works. He s stated to

The sonnet was caught between a neo classical form and the now sentimental form. More feelings
were being added to the sonnet, not just love and fame but now solitude, nature, mortality, and the like
were becoming muses for the sonnet and what was inspiring authors to write them. These sonnets
were starting to address more serious and public themes, possibly to become better connected with
their audience? The source mentions the beginning of the Romantic sonnet and how it was starting to
stray away from imitation and beginning to find its own originality. Keats was known to be an
experimenter of the sonnet. The source discusses the issues that came about as the sonnet transitioned
into the Romantic period and the way it opened up for deeper feelings. More subject matter was being
written about, like disappointed love, radical politics, the natural world, friendship, art and aesthetics,
historical and political figures, religion and spirituality. (173) Is this why Keats sonnets were so
different and not easily put in chronological order? His sonnets (the good and the bad) were about
different subjects (mostly about nature?) How does the added emotional depth impact the sonnet
form? The approach this source is giving is how the sonnet was starting to come from developing
lonely, sentimental, affectionate feelings and a growing interest in nature. It

The Influence of American Culture in the 1950s and 1960s...
Canada as a nation has been striving to characterize itself as more ?Canadian? for decades. This has
included numerous struggles and events such as protests, bans, and the creation of the Massey
Commission, to encourage national development in the arts, and support major companies like the
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and National Film Board (NFB). However, this has not
been an easy task for the Canadian government, as major influences from below the border (the
United States) have been captivating the Canadian audiences by large. American media has had a
momentous revolutionizing effect on Canada, even through efforts made to define Canada with its
own cultural identity.
Pop culture in the 1950s and 1960s began to spread and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The media began to control the way they lived their lives, what they wore, what they listened to, and
even what they believed. After all, everyone wants to roll with the popular crowd.
The Canadian government could not possibly stand for further American conquest on their culture and
media. It was time to stop the inundation of Americanization before they had lost all original material
and their identity had vanished into the shadows of Canadian history. A suitable action was taken by
the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), stripping as much American content from the station
as possible, leaving only what was necessary to satisfy the popular demand (removing all American
substance had its consequences, severe as losing money and audiences, and ensuing in the downfall of
the broadcasting industry due to the lack of well known content). This would leave space for more
Canadian programming, as a result fulfilling the promise of making Canada more Canadian, taking
into consideration even such a small modification.
The Canadian government?s plan to get rid of the great American culture influence was one of many
faults. There would be no way of carrying this out without disappointing much of the un disturbed
Canadian society, those who have grown comfortable with their surroundings and are appreciative of
everything the United States has had to

Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen
Enjoyable, civilized Sense and Sensibility was the first and one of Jane Austen s novels; she wrote it
in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who ostensibly had
little experience of the world although her fiction proves she missed the little that occurred on her
domestic stage and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three daughters wait
passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained missions to London.
In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives Sense and Sensibility
its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. There is great gossip within
the women s sphere, but with men. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edward leaves suddenly for London. The next man to appear is Col. Brandon, played by that
indispensable Alan Rickman. He is attracted to Marianne, but before he can act, she is smitten by the
dashing Willoughby (Greg Wise), who rescues her from a mishap and charms her off her feet. No
sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London although not before Col.
Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his rival
Willoughby.
His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen s time,
such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous
marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing
inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th century fiction, and I find it enormously
satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one who bores us
with confessional psychobabble.
The men s departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite future
in their sewing circle. So, when a kindly relative proposes a visit to London, they seize upon it with
desperation, and it is there that secrets are revealed and alliances are smashed or formed. The
screenplay, adapted from Austen by Emma Thompson, takes wicked delight

Iran As A Democratic Nation
Iran as a newly democratic nation must face many changes. The characteristics of a democratic nation
include individual rights and freedoms, voting rights, free elections, as well as more gender equality.
These are all elements that will be new for the Iranian people. Along with the changes presented by a
new democracy, Iran must also prepare for the changes present in the 21st century. The world as a
whole is changing as technology and policy increase globalization and the need for countries to work
together. As the world continues to change, so too do the requirements for success. Iran as a
democratic nation needs to be aware of these changes. Huitt (2007) discusses how success in the

Elgin and LeDrew (1997) proposes many changes that are necessary for the current and future world.
Instead of focusing on the individual person or country, the world should be viewed as a whole and
complete entity. Economically there should be fair competition. Individuals should participate in life
in such a way that is fulfilling and exciting, but also working towards a greater and global good. This
is a very different perspective for the Iranian government, but to be successful in the new age it is a
necessary shift in thinking. Two trends for success that are pertinent for the Iranians are
decentralization and an emphasis on personal growth and community. Each of these trends is essential
for a newly developed democratic nation. They are fundamental for success in the Conceptual Age or
Reflective/Living Systems Paradigm.
Huitt (1999a) first emphasized decentralization in his writings on the Informational Age. According to
Huitt s definition, decentralization is the process of putting the responsibility and authority for making
decisions into the hands of the people who will be implementing the decision (p. 2). This trend is vital
for success in a newly democratic Iran. The implementation of democracy depends on
decentralization. The government in Iran must trust the people to make decisions regarding the
government, economy, and religious activities. In the end it is the people in Iran who will implement

Why did Canadian working class struggle between fascism and democracy, this left wing and right
wing ideology? The answer exist in the social and economic condition they had to face, the Canadian
working class, although Canada industrial sector and economy has had many time seen economic
depression. The economic depression, which started in 1929, ten years after the world war two ended.
What was different about the depression, which began in 1929, was more severe, larger in scale and
longer than ever seen by Canadian industrial economy. Due to which increase in the unemployment in
Canada reached 30% few years after 1929 economic depression started. This started to cluster more

communist party in Canadian to use the depression era to their advantage by recruiting the working

Johannes Gutenberg Influence
Johannes Gutenberg, born 1395 A.D. in Mainz, Germany, was said to have apprenticed as a goldsmith,
which prompted him to invent the printing press. Gutenberg began to trifle with metal alloys and
minerals to create a lightweight metal that could be poured into a detailed cast and still be strong
enough to last thousands of impressions. Gutenberg s invention allowed for a simpler, faster process,
and offered longer lasting materials. The instant effect of the moveable type printing press was
influential in the expanse of human existence. Gutenberg s most notable and first successful print job
was the 42 Line Bible. From the moment of its inception, the printed book became the universal
standard in publishing and literary devices.
In addition to the printing press, Gutenberg developed a new oil based ink that was more durable and
higher in quality than the water based inks used at that time. The moveable printing press had a hand
in the scientific revolution by enabling scientists to publish their findings in scholarly articles. The
availability of the written word used to be something that was subjugated to the rich and powerful. It
soon became a common basis for information distribution to all members of society after Gutenberg.

1. What is the difference between privacy law and information systems security? How are they
related?
Privacy law stipulates what is public and what is private data. IS Security is required to comply with
the laws, which is how they are related.
2. Was the employee justified in taking home official data? Why or why not?
Uncertain. The employee had taken the work home for 3 years, and being as this is very likely to have
gone unnoticed for this period of time, although unauthorized, it was apparently considered normal at

Modification of their Acceptable User Policy to reflect these requirements.
Conducting training for all personnel that have access to sensitive information.

Rhetorical Devices In Redfern Speech
Have you ever written an essay, composed a letter or read a book? What do you need to do these
things well? Rhetoric. It is the fundamental building blocks of good education, in determining the
decisions we make and how it further deepens one s knowledge. It can inspire people to be generous,
or provoke people to hate and fear. It can change the world by deepening the purpose of good or bad.
It can turn a speaker into a hero or enemy. It can turn a listener into an alley or an opponent.
Communication involves the beautiful art of interactions and understandings between the souls of our
society. Little do we realise, rhetoric is ceaselessly moulding our human experience through the means
of persuasion and transformation. Good morning to my fellow Year 12 Good Samaritan advanced
students, it is clear that despite contextual differences of texts, the amalgamation of rhetoric, textual
integrity, purpose and form establishes a resonating message to audiences. Therefore, composers
employ great rhetoric and cohesiveness in their speeches which have the capability to persuade and
transform society s views, attitudes and beliefs. This is undoubtedly clear in Paul Keating s, Redfern
Speech and Anwar Sadat s, Speech to the Israeli Knesset , which both exhibit the power of words in
refining our perspectives and ideas. They both achieve value beyond the time and place in which they
were first delivered.
Great rhetoric can have the potential to persuade the audience into

Money for Money s Sake in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott...
I think one of the most pervasive evils in this world is greed and acquiring money for money s sake.
Once you have six houses and a plane, it s just about a number. It s never been anything I understood.
This is a quote by Kevin Bacon, a very awesome and apparently worldly actor, and it perfectly
captures the essence of the theme that I have come to for The Great Gatsby. The theme I see most
strongly reflected in the book is this: Although greed and lust are human nature, they are often used as
a substitute for happiness, but almost always lead to decay. I will provide examples of this theme by
looking into events and the behavior of characters throughout the plot of the book.
One main event in the book that I believe strongly represents the theme is when Gatsby is shot while
floating in the pool that he had one of the people working for him wait to drain even though it was the
beginning of the fall season (p.161). I see this as a strong reflection of the theme starting with the
symbolism of the pool (which is apart of a long chain of symbols).
I m going to drain the pool to day, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves ll start falling pretty soon, and then there s
always trouble with the pipes.
Don t do it to day, Gatsby answered. He turned to me apologetically. You know, old sport, I ve never
used that pool all summer? (p.161)
I see the pool as representative of being full of Gatsby s thoughts and love for Daisy and that he is not
ready to drain it yet, and wants to float on what s

body on the ground in a broken mess. I gasped for air like a maniac. My chest burned with each breath
I took, but at this point I embraced it each time with my uncontrollable desperation for air. I watched
as the bits of light continued to hit the ground. The once malicious demon now ran off in front of me,
swiping his top hat with his free hand as he made his escape. Following him were the flashes of light

Getting out of Trouble Imagine this: you are failing two subjects in school and you can t graduate if
you keep it up. Your parents ask, What would you like for your graduation party? Should you lie and
tell what you want...or tell them you are failing? Immanuel Kant defines lying as an intentional
untruthful declaration to another person . Everyone lies in this society that we live in, from kids to the
elderly. So why stress about it? Lying is always justified because it is up to each individual to choose
what to believe to do except for when you are putting other in harm s way. From my point of view,
lying can protect the feeling and lives of others. For example, in the article, It s the Truth by

Foreign Influence on 19th Century China
China s Interaction with Western Nations in the 19th century
And the effects on its economy
The 19th century had sparked a time period of bloody revolution, social and political reform, and both
economic and financial problems for China. Though the cause of many of these problems could be
rooted to internal conflict, foreign influence on Chinese ways proved to be disastrous. During the early
19th century the population was growing, the economy seemed stable and generally people seemed
content with China s economic progress. However these feelings of success would soon end as
overpopulation would cause widespread poverty and famine. At that point in time China s rulers had

Although many British opposed the bond, they signed. Finally, upon receiving all of the opium, he
mixed approximately 20,000 chests of the drug with salt and lime and destroyed it all in the ocean.[9]
Although he and many other Chinese saw this as a means of ridding the country of this evil drug,
Britain took this as an insult. The British had felt as though this was a destruction of private property
and that it created a large loss of revenue for them. But it must be taken into consideration the fact that
Lin had demanded the halt of the product as he claimed that it was a harmful, addictive drug and
Britain was unwilling to comply. As well the British government new this was an illegal substance in
China and the selling of it would be involved with piracy and smuggling, but went along with it
anyhow. [10] Of course Lin had been a man of morale s and didn t take suspect that an entire
government would have been supporting an illegal activity. However it was obvious that war was the

Persuasive Essay On Forethought To Adoption
Forethought to Adoption
While there are those that will argue against adoption, the real argument should be; potential adoptive
parents should plan sensibly and be prepared while considering all the details that will play a role in
the adoption process. Forethought to all the factors is impossible; there will always be more questions,
but they should not just jump in, adoption is not something you should make irrational decisions
about. This is a lifelong commitment that will affect your whole family, also the life of a child. The
public views adoptive children as the vulnerable party in adoption, agencies acknowledge that
adoptive parents are also vulnerable. Prospective parents face stressful individual and collective role
transition challenges as they anticipate forming a new adoptive family. (Farber 176) For some parents,
adoption challenges mobilize problem solving, coping resources, and adaptive resolution. For others,
these challenges become stressors, overtax coping resources, and even contribute to family
dissolution. (Farber 177)
Hence, as a potential adoptive parent or parents there are questions to grasp answers before any
decisions are made. What types of adoption are you contemplating? What factors you should be
considering during an adoption. Are you financially stable enough to go through the adoption process,
then provide an adopted child a decent life? There are numerous factors to consider after you have
made the decision to adopt a child; however, these matters can be figured out, in the end if you are
ready to make a lifetime commitment, if you can love moreover provide for a child, if you want this
enough, you can make it happen.
An important part of this decision is what type of adoption are you contemplating? Private or
Independent domestic adoptions can be very expensive. A private adoption is when a family privately
adopts an infant through a lawyer, physician or facilitator as an alternative to using an adoption
agency. Whereas an independent adoption is when a birth mother gives a child to an adoptive family
without having representation, which is lawful in most states.
International adoption is difficult, also it can be costly; while some countries have limited the number

Essay On Tax Structure Of India
History of tax structure in India
Direct Taxes:
These are taxes which are directly taken from the citizen of a country and are deducted from their
incomes.
Thus, the tax is paid by the person who bears the economic burden of the income generated.
Examples: Income Tax and Corporate Tax. Indirect Taxes:
These are taxes paid by the intermediaries on behalf of the final consumer who bears the ultimate
economic burden of the tax. These were collected by both the central and state governments. The
central government collects variety of taxes such as:
1. Excise Tax (collected on the production and manufacturing of goods)
2. Service Tax (collected on services provided)
3. Customs (collected on international trade)

This led to quite a few shortcomings, such as:
1. Cascading Effect (Tax on Tax)
2. Tax Evasion
3. Corruption All this led to lesser tax collection, as expected by the government, and also an increase
in the price level. Hence the government of India launched GST (GOODS AND SERVICE TAX ).
Introduction of GST in taxation system GST (Goods and Service Tax) also known as giant indirect tax
structure formed to support the economic growth of any country. More than 150 countries have
implemented GST in their taxation system. The idea of GST in india was rooted by Vajpayee govt in
2000 and the amendment was passed for same by the loksabha on 6th May 2015 but was yet to be
passed in rajyasabha. What is GST? Goods and Service Tax (GST) is a tax applied on manufacture,
sale and consumption of goods and services at a national level. It will be an uniform indirect tax and
applied uniformly on all goods and services. By introducing GST into practice there would be
amalgamation of central and state taxes into single tax payement. However, exports and direct tax like
income tax, corporate tax and capital gain tax will not be affected by GST. It was basically introduced
to overcome the problems of the earlier taxation system. Major benefit of introducing GST is its
nature of it being indifferent to goods and services as the tax is levied at each stage of the supply
chain. Also, all sectors will be taxed with very few exemptions

Standard English Essay
The question to ask is: Why not use Standard English all the time?
Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and
ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of
communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for mutual
understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak, which
helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and its fast

Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for
efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of
the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These
modifications form non standard dialects, transferring the speaker s cultural background and language
to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied with
interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as Gravy? , is the opposite of the rising intonation used for
the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two communities due to
the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in No like ( I don t like it ) is a feature of many

through their language use and in group solidarity within the speech community.
There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from
communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. Aboriginal English, a dialect of
Australian English, remains a lingua franca for their speakers, used as a common language to

Importance Of Peer Pressure In My Life
If there is one thing that I ve learned in this life, it would be that friends can pressure you into doing
almost anything. That could be taken as a positive, or it could be taken as a negative, which it is in my
case. Peer pressure is hard to ignore, and when you re young and naive, you will do anything your
friends tell you to do. Being a brainless middle schooler that I once was, I lit a fire in the bathroom.
Imagine showing up to the middle school as a scrawny, scared, unintelligent fifth grader. Being a
normal kid, I hated having to go to school. What started out to be a normal day, ended up with a friend
and I in the principal s office. I thought the day was going to be uneventful, and I wasn t going to learn
anything because I didn t like to pay attention in class. Due to that day, I learned a very valuable
lesson. Just because your friends are doing it, doesn t mean that it s right or that it is a good idea.
Lighting a fire in a small enclosed area is very foolish. For some reason, bathrooms are a place that we
as kids enjoyed to hang out and mess around in. That was where we could mess around and talk about
absolutely anything and not get into trouble, well at least we thought that anyway. It would ve been
fine until one of my friends named Kevin Herndon decided to bring a lighter to school for some odd
reason. I m not going to blame the whole incident on him, because I helped worsen the situation, but I
do blame most of it on him. If he wouldn t have decided to

Environmental Conservation Of The World War II
Environmental conservation has made major advancements throughout history. While its focus during
the 1940s was very limited due to World War II, the effects of the war and industrialization led to the
environmental deterioration and many significant events that increased the public s attention on
pollution. While many minor policies were passed as a way to appease the people, the major shift for
environmentalism was during the 1960s after many pieces of writing were published that exposed the
harmful effects of pollution and toxins that were contaminating the earth. The public s outrage toward
the government s lack of involvement led to major legislations to be passed and a noticeable shift in
importance to the government. While environmental policies were generally weak and unable to be
consistently enforced from 1940 2000, a series of focused legislative acts led to a change in the
standardization of working conditions through safety and health regulations and accountability of
nationally funded programs on conservation of the environment.
One change that occurred in regards to environmental policies in the United States in the past 80 years
was the creation of the National Environmental Policy Act which required increased government
regulation and involvement in their impact on the environment, and chapter 27 of the North American
Free Trade Agreement. The 1960s was an important era for the environment because it was marked

Pollitt s Argumentative Essay
She urged the society to stop blaming women for making such decisions, We don t think that women
have the right to self, they are supposed to live for others (p.17). She also discussed the true social
benefits of abortion rights and forced her readers to think about real life consequences of pregnancies
under different circumstances. What about pregnancies resulting from rape or incest? What about the
choice that a mom possesses over bringing a fetus with profound abnormalities? Pollitt does not wish
for any rules or exceptions to be imposed; no blame or shame or moral judgment she only demands
the freedom of choice for every woman. It is the same society including doctors, nurses and clinics
that risk their lives to help and save a woman, but at the same time blame her and call her baby killer
and interfere in her most private personal choice about her own body. Pollitt ended her reclaims on
abortion rights, by accusing the pro choice movement to fell down on the job (p.14). They couldn t
represent the effective message over the years and this is what requires an immediate change. Only by
reclaiming abortion as a fundamental right and a normal part of health care, Pollitt hopes to win the

The Renaissance And The Renaissance Era
When looking back at the array of time periods discussed in modern history, some stick out more than
others. One historical period that stands out in regards to the richness of the culture, as well as the
progressions in civilization, is the Renaissance era. Culture was a huge part of the Renaissance era.
The vast artistic styles in all aspects of life during this time made for such a cultural focus. The
Renaissance era was called a rebirth of cultural awareness; theatre was a large part of this, including
Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. To understand the role theatre played in shaping the Renaissance era
one must understand what exactly the Renaissance was. The Renaissance is normally thought to have
begun in Italy during the fourteenth century and to have ended in the late sixteenth century (Atlas).
The Renaissance was described as a movement that affected all aspects of culture, literature, and
scholarship as well as painting, sculpture and architecture and that consciously sought to recover and
revive the achievements of classical antiquity (Atlas). The diffusion of Renaissance culture from Italy
to Europe was made possible partly by the way Renaissance culture had diffused and changed within
Italy (Atlas). When the Renaissance movement reached Europe the English Renaissance began. This
is thought to have occurred in the early sixteenth century continuing until the early seventeenth
century. This era in England was called the Renaissance, meaning rebirth, because of the

Elliott s experiment the benefits does not prevail over the potential psychological harm. From a
psychological, scientific perspective, this experiment does not add any scientific value; instead, it
provokes emotional distress in those children to achieve her personal goal. To back up my statement
Bloom (2005) says Jane Elliott s blue eyes brown eyes exercise encouraged children to mistrust
authority figures. She compromised the APA s Code of Conduct and Ethical Standard because she
lied, after that she recanted the lies and kept as they were justified because of her greater purpose. She
abused of her power figure to inflict those under her authority. Another way to understand the
deficiency of scientific value in this experiment is to approach it from Erikson s theory, which
discusses about Industry (competence) vs. Inferiority Stage (5 9 years old). At this stage teachers take
an important role in the child s life, as they teach the children fundamental skills important for the
development of their character. Erikson s theory identifies this stage per its strong peer group
influence that becomes a major source of the children s self esteem. As reported by Erikson, in this
stage children feel the need to demonstrate abilities that are valued and approved by society, in order
to develop a sense of pride for their accomplishments. Its mean, those children changed behavior
conditioned by Mrs. Elliott demands. After encouraged and reinforced for their initiative, those
children begun to feel industrious and confident in their capacity to achieve their goals, they felt
superior at their turn according to her encouragements. The dangerous part of the experiment was
during restrictions and moments of berate, where they felt inferior, doubting of their own abilities and
therefore reducing their potential. Its mean, when a child cannot achieve the society demand (i.e. blue

William Shakespeare s Measure For Measure Essay
In our society, interactions with others contains vital importance when examining the exercise of
authority. Due to this, authority has been very challenging to embrace. An individual with arduous
authority is often required to make decisions, and these decisions are created based on the conscience
this person possesses. Constantly, the interpretation must be made whether these decisions stamp a
title on these individuals, and this is where legitimacy or illegitimacy of the individual s actions make
an appearance. In the play Measure for Measure written by William Shakespeare, readers have the
opportunity to witness this trial of holding authority. Angelo, one of the characters within the play,
exemplifies the exercise of authority, and arguments can be created in relation to the sincerity of his
actions. Many may argue that his use of authority seems illegitimate, but due to certain citations
within this play, I strongly believe the contrary is true. Many situations within this particular play
comprise the recognition characters obtain of his incomparable ability to enforce laws, and these can
act as the establishment of proving the legitimacy he has as an authority figure. Also, particular
characters offer blatant indications of knowing and acknowledging the laws of the land, which will
result in the culmination of proving his legitimacy. Before presenting these examples, the definition of
legitimacy must be clarified. In addition to this, I will also be offering a

Infertility Fertility Benefits
Infertility is a heart breaking condition, which affects about 15 percent of the population of those who
are trying to conceive. Though the statistics vary, between 30 50 percent of these cases of fertility are
due to the male. This can be because of damaged sperm, low semen volume, or difficulty maintaining
an erection. Though infertility is more common in older males, it can happen to men of younger ages
too. Many couples become so desperate to have a child that they turn to in vitro fertilization after a
year or more of trying with no success. This is very expensive though. A much less costly option is to
try fertility supplements instead. Some of the most popular ones to take are the following:
L Arginine
This amino acid has numerous health benefits because of its ability to improve blood flow and relax
constricted blood vessels. Many heart patients take it to help prevent another heart attack from
occurring if they have previously had one before. Just as it helps increase heart flow through the heart,
it can do the same for a man who is struggling with maintaining an erection. More blood flow to the
genitals also increases their libido, and the more a couple has sex, the more likely conception can take

Abraham Lincoln Peoria Speech Summary
Abraham Lincoln was a great president that helped change the course of the united states. Some
people at the time would say for the better other for worse. With that people would call a him a racist,
someone who thinks that their own race is superior to another race. Or people would call him an
emancipator, someone who sets free from legal, political, or social restrictions. Lincoln was not a
racist, he was an emancipator for he freed the slaves. In his Peoria Speech, lincoln express his
disapproval of the Kansas Nebraska Act and how it ignored the issue with slavery. He even says that
his first impulse is to free the slaves, and called slavery an injustice and a betrayal to the republican
example. He then goes on to say that if blacks are people that they deserve equality due to the
Declaration of Independence. Along with that he say that it is not possible to be morally right and
enslave another man. With all this that Lincoln thought better of the slaves not as property but as
people and wanted slavery to stop. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His plan was to speak to some of the blacks leaders and went about doing this through their churches.
When the meeting happened, he explained to them that this would be a good idea and would benefit
both races. He told them that there would still be injustices against them and even though they would
be free they would not be equals. Lincoln says they are fortunate to have this opportunity and should
take it. The place he has planned for them is down in Central America by Panama. He says that there
is a lot of rich coal down there for them and is a good place to start a colony. Lincoln was looking out
for the blacks when he did this, he wanted the best for them and did not want them to be oppressed.
He got 13,000 registered to proceed with the plan, but sadly the Central Government denied the

Essay about Syndexa and Technology Transfer at Harvard
1. Towards the end of his medical training in the early 1980s, Gokhan Hotamisligil was working on a
unique tumor case on a patient and found they were comprised primarily of fat cells. The fatty tumors
were due to a rare condition, Proteus Syndrome. Working in the field of metabolic regulation
Hotamisligil began to explore the underlying pathways for insulin resistance. In his dissertation he
discovered that the fat tissue of obese animals and humans were capable of producing inflammatory
mediators. His research helped shape the current view of fat tissue as a discrete, active organ in its
own right, continuously exchanging messages with the rest of the body by way of the bloodstream. By
early 2002 Hotamisligil and his laboratory made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To balance these competing interests, Harvard agreed to receive an equity stake in the company, and
Syndexa would pay Harvard a small up front fee to license the patents that Hotamisligil had
developed. For Syndexa one of the key parts of negotiations was centered on the research that the start
up intended to fund in Hotamisligil s lab at Harvard. Harvard had major concerns with how the
Syndexa sponsored research will be separated from the other funds (government or foundation funded
projects) that Hotamisligil receives. Harvard cannot funnel federally funded inventions to companies,
however at the same time Syndexa was looking for assurance that they would have first crack at
intellectual property for a technology that they funded. Another major issue extending negotiations
was the conditions under which Syndexa would make royalty payments to Harvard for products that
were not covered under Harvard patents, but discovered using Harvard technologies. To ensure that
Harvard would receive a reasonable return on the patents it was licensing, Syndexa agreed to pay a
small royalty rate if they developed a new therapeutic cure for diabetes using its Harvard license. Both
parties agreed to the concept of an identified product , essentially a drug discovered through the use of
patents, targets and assays being licensed from Harvard. Negotiations over what constituted an
identified product continued through the rest

Persuasive Essay On Plastic Tax
Adding a 25 cent charge towards plastic bags would be a mistake. I am against the idea that our state
should consider the idea of adding the charge because it could lead to other issues. I believe that we
don t have to pay for the bags now, so what difference does it make if we decide to add the tax?
Adding the tax will cause issues for those who use plastic bags, cause paper bags to become more
popular, and cause a high demand in reusable bags. A bag tax that could assist in the affair, but isn t
necessary and should not be added. I don t believe that the tax on plastic bags can solve the issues that
are caused by people who are careless. Punishing those who use plastic bags isn t fair when they might
not even be the ones who are causing the controversy. Adding a bag tax is not going to help us in any
way.
Adding the 25 cent charge bag tax would be a mistake because it will cause issues for people who use
plastic bags. I understand that adding the tax will allow people to realize that plastic bags have
become an issue for our environment. But adding the tax to those who use plastic isn t fair when they
would rather have plastic to use around the house instead of having to worry about paper bags or
remembering to bring along with them reusable bags to the store. I don t find it fair to only tax those
who wish to use plastic bags. Industires who produce plastic bags can make them very efficiently, as
they are produced on a daily schedule. As they are easier to produce, they

  • 3. Light and Dark in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness Essay... Light and Dark in Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is a tragic tale of the white man s journey into the African jungle. When we peel away the layers, however, a different journey is revealed we venture into the soul of man, complete with the darkness of depravity as well as the wonderful. In this essence Conrad uses this theme of light and darkness to contrast the civilized European world with the savage African world in Heart of Darkness. As aforementioned, within Heart of Darkness, Conrad uses light and dark to symbolize good and evil, respectively. It is whiteness that is truly sinister and evil, for it symbolizes the immoral scramble for loot by the unscrupulous and unfeeling Belgian traders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well as the obvious difference between the white and black, we can perhaps see how the boy is trapped beneath and within white greed. This leads me on to the struggle between the white people and the native tribes, which plays into the next theme, that of light versus dark. From the very start, Marlow, the main character, creates a sense of darkness. At last, in its curved and imperceptible fall, the sun sank low, and from glowing white changed to a dull red without rays and without heat, as if about to go out suddenly, stricken to death by the touch of that gloom brooding over a crowd of men (Conrad 28). The use of imperceptible shows the way in which darkness falls without distinction, it sneaks up on the reader and indeed the scene. The dull red is lifeless and without energy and remains stagnant in its nature. Finally the use of the description, stricken to death the finally notion of darkness at its worse is given. Marlow s use of a modern city is the first glimpse of what he considers civilized and more importantly, uncivilized. Marlow begins by speaking of the occupants of the boat. He explains that the owner of the boat is an accountant and a lawyer. This fact alludes to the idea of what might be considered civilized. Furthermore the discussion he talks about the lights that are reflected in the water. This also creates the idea that he considers himself and the passengers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wide receiver Mario Manningham, who has played for the NFL s New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, spoke these jarring words in response to commentary by other players around the league indicating their beliefs that vicious, helmet to helmet hits are simply part of the game (Battista). For many years, this view, in which concussions are actually considered to be good in the way that they show one s toughness and dedication to football, has been shared by many players and coaches throughout the league. The generally short length of the effects of concussions (or at least the immediate effects) and the frequency at which they happen have contributed to this dangerously careless perception of the ailment, to the point that some players would be more likely to consider retirement due to a foot injury than due to a head injury ( AP survey: Concussions not most ). Additionally, the lack of response to concussions by the National Football League, revealed in a 2012 lawsuit filed against it by former players affected by concussions, exacerbates the issue, along with their past attempts to hide the severity of concussions from players. This view of concussions is extremely concerning, and while the NFL has taken steps forward regarding concussion prevention and response through fines and regulations, improvement of the players awareness of concussions, stricter responses to concussions by the league, and increased support of players who ... • 5. John Keats Poetry Synthesis Essay For this source, the focus was on a section of the book that was about John Keats. The problem this source is addressing is an emphasis on Keats and what he was focusing on when he wrote. It opens with a quote from Keats: Difficulties nerve the spirit of a man. (298) This is a problem that this source presents: the difficulties that Keats dealt with in his short life, specifically in the end, and how it affected his poetry. The source speaks mostly about Keats love for nature and how sensuous he was about it. Even though that is the opposite of the poems I want to focus on in my project, I still felt like this source was informative in the ways of which Keats was inspired in his other works. These sonnets were starting to address more serious and public themes, possibly to become better connected with their audience? The source mentions the beginning of the Romantic sonnet and how it was starting to stray away from imitation and beginning to find its own originality. Keats was known to be an experimenter of the sonnet. The source discusses the issues that came about as the sonnet transitioned into the Romantic period and the way it opened up for deeper feelings. More subject matter was being written about, like disappointed love, radical politics, the natural world, friendship, art and aesthetics, historical and political figures, religion and spirituality. (173) Is this why Keats sonnets were so different and not easily put in chronological order? His sonnets (the good and the bad) were about different subjects (mostly about nature?) How does the added emotional depth impact the sonnet form? The approach this source is giving is how the sonnet was starting to come from developing lonely, sentimental, affectionate feelings and a growing interest in nature. It ... This has included numerous struggles and events such as protests, bans, and the creation of the Massey Commission, to encourage national development in the arts, and support major companies like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and National Film Board (NFB). However, this has not been an easy task for the Canadian government, as major influences from below the border (the United States) have been captivating the Canadian audiences by large. The media began to control the way they lived their lives, what they wore, what they listened to, and even what they believed. After all, everyone wants to roll with the popular crowd. The Canadian government could not possibly stand for further American conquest on their culture and media. It was time to stop the inundation of Americanization before they had lost all original material and their identity had vanished into the shadows of Canadian history. A suitable action was taken by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), stripping as much American content from the station as possible, leaving only what was necessary to satisfy the popular demand (removing all American substance had its consequences, severe as losing money and audiences, and ensuing in the downfall of the broadcasting industry due to the lack of well known content). This would leave space for more Canadian programming, as a result fulfilling the promise of making Canada more Canadian, taking into consideration even such a small modification. The Canadian government?s plan to get rid of the great American culture influence was one of many faults. There would be no way of carrying this out without disappointing much of the un disturbed Canadian society, those who have grown comfortable with their surroundings and are appreciative of everything the United States has had to ... Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen Enjoyable, civilized Sense and Sensibility was the first and one of Jane Austen s novels; she wrote it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who ostensibly had little experience of the world although her fiction proves she missed the little that occurred on her domestic stage and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three daughters wait passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained missions to London. In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives Sense and Sensibility its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. He is attracted to Marianne, but before he can act, she is smitten by the dashing Willoughby (Greg Wise), who rescues her from a mishap and charms her off her feet. No sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London although not before Col. Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his rival Willoughby. His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen s time, such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th century fiction, and I find it enormously satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one who bores us with confessional psychobabble. The men s departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite future in their sewing circle. Elgin and LeDrew (1997) proposes many changes that are necessary for the current and future world. Instead of focusing on the individual person or country, the world should be viewed as a whole and complete entity. Economically there should be fair competition. Individuals should participate in life in such a way that is fulfilling and exciting, but also working towards a greater and global good. This is a very different perspective for the Iranian government, but to be successful in the new age it is a necessary shift in thinking. Two trends for success that are pertinent for the Iranians are decentralization and an emphasis on personal growth and community. Each of these trends is essential for a newly developed democratic nation. They are fundamental for success in the Conceptual Age or Reflective/Living Systems Paradigm. Huitt (1999a) first emphasized decentralization in his writings on the Informational Age. According to Huitt s definition, decentralization is the process of putting the responsibility and authority for making decisions into the hands of the people who will be implementing the decision (p. 2). It is the fundamental building blocks of good education, in determining the decisions we make and how it further deepens one s knowledge. It can inspire people to be generous, or provoke people to hate and fear. It can change the world by deepening the purpose of good or bad. It can turn a speaker into a hero or enemy. It can turn a listener into an alley or an opponent. Communication involves the beautiful art of interactions and understandings between the souls of our society. Little do we realise, rhetoric is ceaselessly moulding our human experience through the means of persuasion and transformation. Good morning to my fellow Year 12 Good Samaritan advanced students, it is clear that despite contextual differences of texts, the amalgamation of rhetoric, textual integrity, purpose and form establishes a resonating message to audiences. Therefore, composers employ great rhetoric and cohesiveness in their speeches which have the capability to persuade and transform society s views, attitudes and beliefs. This is undoubtedly clear in Paul Keating s, Redfern Speech and Anwar Sadat s, Speech to the Israeli Knesset , which both exhibit the power of words in refining our perspectives and ideas. Once you have six houses and a plane, it s just about a number. It s never been anything I understood. This is a quote by Kevin Bacon, a very awesome and apparently worldly actor, and it perfectly captures the essence of the theme that I have come to for The Great Gatsby. The theme I see most strongly reflected in the book is this: Although greed and lust are human nature, they are often used as a substitute for happiness, but almost always lead to decay. I will provide examples of this theme by looking into events and the behavior of characters throughout the plot of the book. One main event in the book that I believe strongly represents the theme is when Gatsby is shot while floating in the pool that he had one of the people working for him wait to drain even though it was the beginning of the fall season (p.161). Forethought to all the factors is impossible; there will always be more questions, but they should not just jump in, adoption is not something you should make irrational decisions about. This is a lifelong commitment that will affect your whole family, also the life of a child. The public views adoptive children as the vulnerable party in adoption, agencies acknowledge that adoptive parents are also vulnerable. Prospective parents face stressful individual and collective role transition challenges as they anticipate forming a new adoptive family. (Farber 176) For some parents, adoption challenges mobilize problem solving, coping resources, and adaptive resolution. For others, these challenges become stressors, overtax coping resources, and even contribute to family dissolution. (Farber 177) Hence, as a potential adoptive parent or parents there are questions to grasp answers before any decisions are made. What types of adoption are you contemplating? What factors you should be considering during an adoption. Are you financially stable enough to go through the adoption process, then provide an adopted child a decent life? There are numerous factors to consider after you have made the decision to adopt a child; however, these matters can be figured out, in the end if you are ready to make a lifetime commitment, if you can love moreover provide for a child, if you want this enough, you can make it happen. An important part of this decision is what type of adoption are you contemplating? Private or Independent domestic adoptions can be very expensive. A private adoption is when a family privately adopts an infant through a lawyer, physician or facilitator as an alternative to using an adoption agency. Whereas an independent adoption is when a birth mother gives a child to an adoptive family without having representation, which is lawful in most states. International adoption is difficult, also it can be costly; while some countries have limited the number of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While its focus during the 1940s was very limited due to World War II, the effects of the war and industrialization led to the environmental deterioration and many significant events that increased the public s attention on pollution. While many minor policies were passed as a way to appease the people, the major shift for environmentalism was during the 1960s after many pieces of writing were published that exposed the harmful effects of pollution and toxins that were contaminating the earth. The public s outrage toward the government s lack of involvement led to major legislations to be passed and a noticeable shift in importance to the government. While environmental policies were generally weak and unable to be consistently enforced from 1940 2000, a series of focused legislative acts led to a change in the standardization of working conditions through safety and health regulations and accountability of nationally funded programs on conservation of the environment. Due to this, authority has been very challenging to embrace. An individual with arduous authority is often required to make decisions, and these decisions are created based on the conscience this person possesses. Constantly, the interpretation must be made whether these decisions stamp a title on these individuals, and this is where legitimacy or illegitimacy of the individual s actions make an appearance. In the play Measure for Measure written by William Shakespeare, readers have the opportunity to witness this trial of holding authority. Angelo, one of the characters within the play, exemplifies the exercise of authority, and arguments can be created in relation to the sincerity of his actions. Many may argue that his use of authority seems illegitimate, but due to certain citations within this play, I strongly believe the contrary is true. Many situations within this particular play comprise the recognition characters obtain of his incomparable ability to enforce laws, and these can act as the establishment of proving the legitimacy he has as an authority figure.
