Arguments Against Indigenous Self Government
Prior to contact with Europeans, Indigenous peoples relied on their own established ways of
political systems and institutions, in other words, Indigenous peoples were a self governing
society. However, many of these political systems were legally suppressed and ignored by the
federal government as an attempt to assimilate and civilize Indigenous peoples. The 1876 Indian Act
dismantled traditional systems of governance and imposed external controls in the form of local
Indian agents and the federal bureaucracy of the Department of Indian Affairs (now Indigenous and
Northern Affairs Canada) on individuals and communities (Henderson, 2006). Indigenous peoples
have been trying to get back the right to govern themselves and preserve their cultural identities
since the arrival of Europeans, and in addition, there has been a current and long going debate...

Canada has signed 22 self government agreements recognizing a wide range of Aboriginal
jurisdictions that involve 36 Aboriginal communities across Canada (Self Government, Indigenous
and Northern Affairs Canada, 2015), one example being the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
There are many advantages of recognizing the right to self governance within Indigenous
communities, which can be seen throughout the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. One advantage
of Indigenous self government, as stated by Canadian Indigenous law expert, John Borrows
(2016), is that if Indigenous peoples were recognized as having the right to self governance, they
d be able to get away from Indian Act (CBC News). The contemporary version of the Indian Act
still outlines various rules around reserves, management of band resources, elections, and other
aspects of life on a reserve (Henderson, 2006). However, if Indigenous

Access teaching materials
1. Introduction
Access is a computerized Database Management System (DBMS) that enables you to store,
retrieve, analyze, and print information. It is a system for managing large amounts of data.
Companies use databases for many purposes: to manage customer files, to track orders and
inventories, and for marketing purposes. An individual might set up a data base to track household
expenses or manage a list of family, friends, and business addresses. Teachers often set up a
database to track students grades ad other class information. A database enables the user to access
and manage thousands of pieces of data in an organized, efficient, and accurate manner.

Essay on Shifting Efficiency
Shifting Efficiency
One of the most important and life altering inventions in history is the creation of the automobile.
The first model was built with a manual transmission, meaning the operator of the vehicle was
responsible for manually changing gears to increase speed. This method of acceleration, while
efficient, required the complete attention of the operator, and it sometimes took away the enjoyment
of driving. This led to the invention of the automatic transmission, a method by which the operator
of the vehicle no longer had to switch gears, as this was done automatically. Since the development
of the automatic transmission, there has always been conflict about which method of acceleration
is more efficient.
Driving a vehicle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using a standard, learning how to create the equilibrium of letting one foot off the clutch and
pressing the other on the gas pedal in first gear could take a while to master. An automatic car,
with the process of driving in first gear taken care of magically to most people, is much simpler
and less time consuming to learn. All a person has to do is put the gear shift in drive and press on
the gas pedal.
The final question of efficiency lies within the problem of figuring out which type of transmission
is better when racing. In this area, the manual transmission becomes the popular choice, compared
to the automatic. An automatic does not give the driver the freedom to shift gears when desired, as
this is sometimes necessary when shift variation is a key element to winning a race. The manual
transmission allows the driver to choose when it is necessary to shift gears, sometimes giving the
racer an edge over someone who is racing with an automatic car. Even though an automatic
transmission takes the work out of driving something most people are thankful for, given that some
could never handle the task of shifting manually, the standard has its own advantages also.
The decision about which transmission is more efficient may never be reached, given the
advantages and disadvantages of each. It really depends on the person who buys the car and what
it will be

Comparison Of Nibelungenlied Savagery And Good Manners
In The Nibelungenlied savagery and good manners have an integral role in the interactions
between characters and the epic as a whole. Proper etiquette is emphasized within the medieval
culture, it is used as a sign of respect and admiration to one s superior or equal. However,
Savagery is often either celebrated or discounted completely. There are many instances within the
epic when an event or a character s actions could be perceived as ignoble or undignified, usually,
such acts are frowned upon in medieval literature. However, in The Nibelungenliedthese acts are not
only acceptable, in certain instances, they are even praised. Good manners are often used by
characters within the epic in order to gain some sort of political or strategical advantage. When
Siegfried first ventures to Burgundy, he immediately rushes into kingdom and challenges king
Gunther. Instead of participating in war, Gunther decides that appeasing Siegfried and making an
ally of him would be significantly more productive than battling him and risk losing the lives of
many of his men. Gunther appeases Siegfried by being well mannered and gracious towards him.
Gunther offered The best possible quarters...for Siegfried s squires...Siegfried was a most welcome
guest among the Burgundians(31). While Gunther could have easily become bellicose and
responded to Siegfried s challenge with violence, he instead used graciousness as a weapon, the
benefit in this decision was seen soon after. As Siegfried

Vancouver Drug Problem
The city of Vancouver has been known to have a drug issue, more specifically in the downtown
eastside area, which holds one of the most unwealtiest and oldest neighbourhoods in Canada. While
British Columbia has an estimate of 20,000 injection drug users who are pronounced to be in
poverty, have a mental illness, and be homeless (Jozaghi, Andresen, 2013: 1). In efforts to reduce
this drug problem, the city developed a plan using a four pillar approach that focuses on
enforcement, harm reduction, treatment, and prevention (Schaefer Haaland, 2014: 242). Schaefer

Even though there are already harsh penalties toward those who contain and use illicit drugs, it
would not be possible to give them these sentences without their presence. Many legal drugs
such as alcohol and tobacco have relatively dangerous affects that could lead to death in the same
ways illegal substances can, which brings upon the question of why an individual s well being
would ever be put before the law. INSITE has proven to the world that providing a secure and
reliable facility for addicts to inject drugs will not only prevent them from harm and provide
safety for the public, but it will also encourage users to seek recovery. Research shows that
associations with the safe injection site has caused a 30 percent increase in rehabilitation
programs, and an estimate of $14 million in savings and 1000 HIV preventions through the course
of 10 years (Mosher, 2011: 377). With the significant amount of evidence that INSITE has
positively impacted toward society and its members, there is no reason not to launch additional safe

Why I Should Not Get Up On Material Possessions
I used to be a person who was hung up on material possessions. I was always wanting more, never
satisfied with what I had. Whenever I would go to the mall, I would want everything that I saw.
If I had money I would always spend it. I was constantly buying things that I didn t need, only
used once, or would stay in my closet with the tags on. I felt like I was unfortunate because I
didn t have a new outfit every week, and I couldn t get a new pair of shoes every time I walked
out the door, but that all changed the summer going into freshman year. My father suggested, to
go on a border immersion trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. He thought that it would be a good idea
to read what it was like to live on the border. But, no matter how many times we got together or
how many books we read, nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to experience
while I was down there.
I left on July 20 on a plane headed for Laredo, Texas. I would be staying at a relative s near Laredo
and then every morning we would cross over the border into Mexico and go work at a daycare
center, Valdes Suarez Maria Irene . Our first day there we didn t go to the daycare center, instead
we met some friends of my father s friends, Jesus and Irene. They live in Nuevo Laredo, and what
they do is help out the people in their community. They also help people who are coming down
from the United States to help out for the first time or people who are coming back from Central or
South America and need a place

American Pioneers Vs Pioneers
I recognise your claim in your speech and I have to say I disagree with you. I solemnly believe
that the statue should be put up because the pioneers had every right to come here. They were in
search for a better living because in Holland they were not able to raise children nor make a
living. It is very easy today to compare it too refugees that come to America to better their lives
also. Today we have people are coming to America to better their lives, just like the pioneers did.
This statue shows the American dream. It is tragic that there was a war that resulted in their
appearances but change is natural in life. Changes like the Soviet Union become Russia or even in
America the Union defeating the Confederates in which was a major step

Program Implementation Of Public Policy
Program Implementation Steps Public policy may be defined as organizing framework of purposes
and rationales for government programs that deal with specified societal problems or a complex of
programs enacted and implemented by government. Program implementation is that set of activities
directed toward putting a program into effect. Three activities, in particular are significant in
program implementation. They are organization, interpretation and application. The activity of
organization is the establishment or rearrangement of resources units and methods for putting a
program into effect. This can happen in several ways. One is the creation of a totally new agency,
such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affair. Another is merging, upgrading, or dividing existing
agencies. More often, programs are assigned to existing agencies, which must still interpret and
apply the laws or regulations and develop appropriate implementation methods. Program
implementation starts broadly with the intention on the public interest, convenience, and needs.
Laws and regulations may be more or less specific in their details, goals, timelines, and intended
results. Thus, the responsible agency is in charge of developing operating guidelines and
substantive procedures. The agency has the opportunity to shape legislated programs and possibly
modifying congressional intent. Agencies responsible for implementing congressional and
presidential directives feel constant political pressure.

Examples Of Consequentialism In Bhagavad Gita

World Civilization 111

Research Paper Hinduism (Bhagavad Gita)
Arjuna faces the tough decision of facing his own blood in war as he has to fight against his
relatives. As a result we get the distinction of duty and consequences, or deontology and
consequentialism. Deontology is the idea that believes that actions are right or wrong in
themselves, regardless of their consequence. On the other hand, consequentialism is defined as the
position that an action is right if it has good consequences and wrong if it has bad consequences.
This is an underlying theme in the Bhagavad Gita as Arjuna seeks help from his cousin, Krishna on
whether or not he should fight. The Bhagavad Gita shows the tension that Arjuna faces between
duty and consequences which ties into the belief of reincarnation and the purpose of the soul in
Hinduism.
Arjuna faces conflict when he has to make the decision to fight people that he was once friends
with and have to kill them in order to survive. When it comes time to fight Arjuna cannot bring
himself together to fight, but Krishna encourages Arjuna to fight by giving him advice through a
lot of philosophical matter. In the end this is what motivates Arjuna to fight again. Krishna provides
advice according to what Arjuna said about why he did not want to fight anymore. Arjuna s
argument can be summarized in two main points: the argument from personal happiness and the
argument from evil. The advice that

Symbolism In My Papa s Waltz By Theodore Roethke
In the poem My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke, the meaning of the piece varies on the readers`
perspective. Some think that this is one of happy memories between a son and father. Others think
that the waltz covers up the truth of child cruelty. In my opinion, the symbolism and the imagery in
My Papas Waltz gave me the automatic thoughtof the abusive relationship between the father and
son. But after investigating the poem I could begin to see the positive side.
After reading the first line of Roethke s piece, My Papas Waltz, I automatically assumed this poem
had negative meaning. The first couple lines state, The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy (Lines 1 2). Meaning the father has been drinking, and not just a
little. He was so drunk that even the smell of his breath could make his son, feel a bit light
headed. Alcohol makes people do crazy things so this could possibly give the father the idea and
the ability to harm the child. Because in most cases it is not a great situation when a drunken
adult presents himself to a child. This poem could be comprehended as a description of a young
boy s experience of abuse from his father. But I hang on like death seems to show a child s
frightful feeling from having to face a drunken father. The image in my head here is that of the
father and his child kitchen around the kitchen with the boy having to hold on like death because it
s a scary situation for the young boy. To emphasize the helplessness of the

Strategic Analysis Of Pixar, Winston Churchill
Strategic Analysis: Pixar Winston Churchill once stated However beautiful the strategy, you should
occasionally look at the results . The current business environment is rapidly evolving due to the
pressures of changing technology as well as the increasing demands firms are under to expand
regionally and globally. Successful organizations in this often chaotic and changing environment
must continually scan their internal and external conditions in order to respond proactively to
market conditions and new trends. Firm leadership needs to not only have a vision for the
organization s future but also the ability to critically analyze the internal processes and structure of
the firm in comparison to the outcomes or results of the firm s current orientation. Strategy and
vision are meaningless if the way they are being executed does not provide the organization a
sustainable competitive advantage. Therefore it is critical that firm leadership examine how their
organization is implementing their strategy to determine its effectiveness and results. When
examining how a firm is implementing their strategy they should examine the internal organization
and processes of the organization. Within this paper we will examine how Pixar has utilizes
processes and principles such as behavioral controls, culture, boundaryless organization, learning
organization, employee empowerment, and a dispersed culture of creativity/entrepreneurial to
retain its current market position as a

For example, Ireland lowered its corporate tax rate to 12.5%, which got the economy booming.
The country s gross domestic product rate grew at a rate of around 26.3%. Ireland s low
corporate tax rate attracted successful foreign companies to invest in Ireland. For example,
American companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Apple all have subsidiaries in Ireland to
take advantage of Ireland s low corporate tax rate (Semeuls). However, the low corporate tax rate
was not the only reason the country had flourished. There were several other factors that helped
boost Ireland s economy. One of them included Ireland joining the European market in the 1990s,
which allowed goods to flow freely across the countries in the European Union. Soon, Ireland
became an entry point within Europe and large corporations started to use Ireland to manufacture
goods and sell the goods to other European countries without the attachment of any tariffs. In
addition to Ireland joining the European market, Ireland attracted many corporations to its country
because it was primarily an English speaking country. This helped in the ease of communication
between the Irish government and the foreign corporations. Another factor that helped boost
Ireland s overall economy was that the Irish government passed a number of educational reforms
which led to a significant number of educated graduates that came out of Irish schools (Semeuls).
In the 1990s and 2000s, Ireland became a highly attractive country for international companies
because it acted as an easy trade center within the European Single Market. Therefore, the low
corporate tax rates was not the only reason Ireland s economy boomed, but also a combination of
factors, which was very specific to the country of Ireland and that could not be copied by other
countries, all came together to

shaped by a slow movement of the vocal cords. It considered to be a voice disorder (Tamasi, P132).
Also people tend to have a lot of negative attitude towards vocal fry.
Creaky voice is been used by movie star Mae West in a film from 1933 (Tamasi, P132). Since the
1960s, the vocal fry, falsetto and modal have been put into the three lowest vocal register. Vocal fry

Civil War Effects On The Economy
Ashley Davis Journal Entry How did the war impact the economy in the North and the economy in
the South? In the 1800 s before the start of the Civil War the North and South were very dependent
on each for financial stability. Ironically, even though the North opposed slavery, their economy
was dependent on those very people. The northern states supplied the money and marketing to the
Southern states who in turn manufactured and grew the cotton and other products to be sent to the
North. By the late 1850 s, the southern planters owed northern bankers and other creditors about
$300 million, and much of this immense sum would be lost as, in fact, it later was should the
Union dissolve (Chapter 16 pg. 367). The prospect of growing their

Finding Employment For College Graduates
There has been a major problem with finding employment for college graduates. Many students
believe in order to receive a great job after you graduate you must attend an elite school or a
predominately white school. Graduating from a historical black college most of the time gets
looked down on because how people view them. There is a stigma that HBCU s are less stringent
and collect fewer less post grad employment opportunities. Sometimes receiving employment is not
all about what schoolyou graduated from, the color of your skin, or what gender you are, it s about
simply what you know or who you know. Another problem is that many of the schools do not help
students find job opportunities with makes it harder for the student. It is believed that implicit
association and institutional perception is involved when getting selected for a job. Does school
choice really define who you are?
There have been studies done about graduates having difficulty finding employment because of
the school they attended. School choice should not define who you are, but sadly sometimes it
does. There was a graduate from Prairie View A M University who was seeking employment. The
graduate applied to a company and had Prairie View on his resume as the school he graduated
from, but never got a reply. The graduate knew something was wrong because they knew that they
met all the qualifications from the position. The graduate figured it was because of the Institution

Economics of the Financial System
Show how transactions in derivatives can be used to either hedge risk or to open speculative
positions.
Derivatives have become popular in response to the increasing volatility and complexity of
financial markets. A diverse range of new financial products have been created to enable market
participants to handle the risks arising from trade in securities and to speculate on future expected
movements in securities prices, without direct trade in the assets themselves. Derivative contract
creates a promise to deliver or trade an underlying product at some time in the future. The contract

If stock prices plunge over this period, the index will fall as well, and so will the futures contract on
the index in response. Amana will profit on its future position, because the future price paid at
which the index is sold will be less than price paid for the index at settlement date.
After a month, the stock market falls as anticipated, and the futures price of the DJIA is at an
index level of 19,000. DJIA futures contract are rated at ВЈ10 the DJIA index, so Amana stands to
gain. Sold DJIA futures for 20,000; receives 20,000 times ВЈ10 =ВЈ200,000 Purchased DJIA
futures for 19,000; owes 19,000 times ВЈ10 =ВЈ190,000 Gain is ВЈ200,000 ВЈ190,000 = ВЈ10,000
This shows that Amana benefits from selling a DJIA futures contract. Amana has gained from a
market decline, which can partially counterbalance the loss on its existing stock portfolio.
However, to hedge a huge stock of portfolio, Amana would have to take a short position that had a
value equal to the size of its entire stock portfolio.
Options give one party the right, but not the obligation, to buy (or sell) at a set price on an agreed
future date. Future Contracts are a means of avoiding risk but at the cost of eliminating opportunity.

Is Jean Valjean A Hero
When most people hear hero they think of a knight in shining armor, who is absolutely perfect,
and has no flaws. Most heroes aren t criminals, or liars, or on the run. Yet the hero of Victor Hugo
s Les Miserables, Jean Valjean, is a convict who escaped from prison. The reason the reader routes
for Jean Valjean, even though he isn t the typical hero, is because they see his transformation, his
choice to do the right thing, and his selfless actions.

Jean Valjean raises his niece Cosette as his own daughter, and saves her from abusive strangers
she was living with. He is very protective of her, and when she grows up and falls in love this
care only increases. That is why he keeps her from her love, Marius. Marius in his extreme
despair joins some men in a barricade, fully aware that he will probably now die in the war.
When Jean Valjean realizes how distraught Cosette is, he goes out to save Marius. At first glance,
he risks his life for Marius, but really he is risking his life for Cosette s happiness. Even after he
willingly went into a life threatening situation for Cossette, he continues to do selfless things for
her and her now husband, Marius. Jean Valjean realizes that if his identity is ever discovered
Cosette and her new family will be in danger. So he starts to distance himself from her, and this
causes him great pain. For her own sake, he starts making her call him Monsieur Jean, but she
does not know why. One day she accidentally call him father and he reprimands her to call him
Jean, but not without turning away that she might not see him wipe his tears. (372) It destroys
Jean Valjean to separate himself from Cosette, but he does it out of selfless love. Seeing Jean

Steven D. Levitt s Freakonomics
Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work,
whereas economics represents how it actually does work. as once stated by Steven D. Levitt in
his book Freakonomics, where he dives into the unknown world of economics. Through each
chapter he and his partner, Stephen D. Dubner, sought up questions that one does not think about
on a regular basis. For example, what is more dangerous, a swimming pool or a gun? What do
teachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Also they explain how something as simple as a
name can affect one s life. In the book Freakonomics, the writers seek to expand a reader s
knowledge of economicsthrough the main argument that personal incentive is a hidden factor for
most occurrences using statistics and algorithms.
The authors describe an incentive as a means of urging people to do more of a good thing or less of
a bad thing. In 1996 the Chicago Public School system embraced a new testing policy for their

patterns of answers among students, or a string of correct answers that appeared on every answer

Poetry Compare Contrast Essay
The sonnet, Time Does Not Bring Relief by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and the poem, Gouge, Adze,
Rasp, Hammer by Chris Forhan, are both about the emotional pain of a lost love. Both of the
poems follow the narrators after their losses, but each speaker handles with their situation
differently. The narrator in Time Does Not Bring Relief can not find liberation from her heart ache,
and experiences a more powerful and unavoidable sadness than the narrator from Gouge, Adze,
Rasp, Hammer, who copes with his heartache more successfully, and eventually begins the healing
process, as exemplified by the use of tone, structure and imagery in these poems. Firstly, the
difference in tone between the poems clarifies the fact that the woman in Time Does Not Bring
Relief is inconsolable, while the man in Gouge, Adze, Rasp, Hammer, has begun the healing...

Time Does Not Bring Relief is a Shakespearean sonnet, which brings a structure to the narrator s
writing, which is contrary to the free verse that is used in the poem Gouge, Adze, Rouge,
Hammer , which is more casual and relaxed. The narrator follows the rhyme and structure of the
Shakespearean sonnet instead of using free verse to express herself, which is interesting to note
because she employs the structure of a sonnet, despite the fact that she is going through powerful
storms of unrelenting grief. It can be interpreted that the structure of her writing may stabilize her
through the troubling time of her loss. The free verse that the narrator uses in Gouge, Adze, Rasp,
Hammer, is more expressive and free because it lacks a definite structure. The narrator is able to
write about his feelings without being tied down and concerned with form. The use of free verse in
the poem can be interpreted as the narrator s internal misery that displays itself as amiability and

Norms And Its Effect On Society
Norms are unwritten socially accepted principles or rules in society that define what is normal
and what isn t. Some norms carry greater significance in our lives than others. The terminology
mores was inclined to norms that are extensively observed and hold extensive moral
significance. Mores also means taboos of society, things that are not accepted, such as chewing
with one s mouth closed is expected or eating in a sloppy way and at a fast pace is not an
acceptable behavior. Mores classify what is merited and what isn t. When a norm is violated it
is defined as deviance and even though the word deviance has a negative connotation to it, it s
not. Deviance means and individual is behaving differently from what society feels is normal
behavior. If a person is deviant from norms it doesn t necessary means that they are doing
something bad or immoral. For example, most Canadians eat meat on a regular basis and they
feel by doing so is normal behavior, someone who doesn t eat meat (vegetarian) they would be
considered deviant. Their behavior is different to what the majority considers acceptable or
normal. And just like norms are relative deviance is relative as well. It depends on the context,
individual groups or location in the world and the standard of deviance change based on these
factors. (Macionis, John J. Sociology) For this assignment, I choose to eat in a provocative manner

Reducing Costs through Production and Supply Chain Management by Vinod Lall
Executive Summary
There are numerous drivers of production and the supply chain, and there are several processes
under each driver. These processes are associated with high overheads and offer opportunities for
cost reduction. Cost reduction requires a complete knowledge and mapping of all costs, cycle
times, purchases, inventories, suppliers, customers, logistics, and other service providers
throughout the supply chain. Cost reduction in the supply chain often requires trade off analysis
amongst conflicting alternatives using the total cost approach. Successfully achieving supply chain

These include component commonality, component modularity, and postponement. Component
commonality: The principle of component commonality focuses on the design and use of common
components for families of products. When there are a large number of products in a supply chain,
the inventory of components will naturally be large. Component commonality calls for the use of
common components in a variety of products. This reduces costs not only by reducing inventory
cost but also through reduced material cost, reduced production cost, and reduced product
obsolescence. For example, a computer manufacturer can design common components such as
memory and disk drives and use different combinations of these components to produce different
finished products. Component modularity: The principle of component modularity recommends
that common subsystems be designed as modules to meet a broad range of feature requirements.
This reduces the number of components that must be produced, kept in materials and repair parts
inventory, and integrated into the product during the production process. This reduces procurement,
manufacturing, and inventory costs, leading to a lower supply chain cost. Manufacturers of
electronic products, for example, use the principle of modularity to design and assemble printers,
computers, and so on. Postponement: Postponement means delaying the bringing of products into
their final form until close to the point of

Asian Cultures And American Cultures Essay
Culture: Earth is bigger than what most people think; it consists of 7 continents, 7 seas, and 196
different countries. Taking that into consideration, our earth currently is supporting over 7 billion
people worldwide. That is 7 billion people who are different and individuals who share different
thoughts, ideas, backgrounds, and cultures. Cultures are very unique as they are different from
country to country. Some adopt cultures that society accept as the norm, while others adopt
different types of cultures; cultures that not many people, especially those outside from the country,
can see eye to eye and would sometimes find them rather extreme . When comparing Asian cultures
and American cultures side by side, we can easily identify the many differences between the two.
For one, Asian cultures are less open, more traditional and conservative in comparison to
Americans. While Americans promote liberty, independence, and values individualism; Asian
countries, on the other hand, are more fixated in keeping to the custom. Knowing this, it is not
surprising to see Asian countries have a more rigid and structured form of society compared to the
Western counterparts. The values, business structures and even priorities are different between the
two and can easily be distinguished. Singapore is a good example on the contrasting differences
and representation of the Asian cultures. Singapore: Singapore is a self governing city state located
in Southeast Asia. It is one of the

The Olympic Games Or A Party
The Olympic Games or a Party The Olympics are a special spectacle for everyone, and for sixteen
days every two years we are witness to the best athletes in the world. Only for the rare few the
dream to compete are a reality, but for the billions of other people, this is an event of pride and
passion for their home country. The continuous cycle of new cities and different countries
hosting the games brings out great nationalism. The challenge to get a bid to host the Olympics
has always been difficult but as the cost of the games rises the number of cities vying for it is
decreasing. The Olympics are the biggest sporting event in the world, and they are one of the

a country s economy through tourism and the need for jobs and construction. But the Olympics are
becoming very costly and countries are beginning to wonder if its worth it to host the party when
they know they will not earn all the money back. The Olympics ruin economies and the games tend

Overcoming Weaknesses: Decision Making
At the start of the semester, the Birkman identified decision making efficiency as an area for
personal improvement. At a score of 92, I need plenty of time for complex decisions to avoid
indecision when pressured (Birkman, 2017). While careful thought has its advantages, I do not
respond well when time is of the essence. This was true across the board within my team, which had
needs scores ranging from 74 98 with an average of 90 (Birkman, 2017). Our knowledge of our
own needs helped us overcome the challenges it posed. Firstly, whenever possible, we would
bring up potential issues at a meeting, then disband to allow everyone time to reflect on their own
before coming back together to discuss. This alleviated the pressure of making a snap decision we
may later regret. Of course, there were situations where it was not practical to delay decisions. In
those instances, we acknowledged our own tendency towards indecision, but urged each other to
express our gut feelings, make the best decision possible give the constraints, and avoid
unnecessary worry after a consensus had been reached.

Analysis Of The Kite Runner
One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and
regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go
away. We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can
lessen them through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and
protagonist, Amir. Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are
physical or emotional. Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has
emotional scars from not being able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a
cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his
mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from being raped. The reader is probably shown the
emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional scars because he feels that he killed his
mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him. In the end of the novel, Amir
receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when rescuing Sohrab. Though
scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad.
The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both
emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written
novel will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This

Introduction of Indirect Taxing on Energy Drinks in France
This article discusses how France introduced an indirect tax on energy drinks at €1 per liter. The
tax was imposed to tackle alcohol consumption among France s young population and energy drinks
consumption due to its high levels of caffeine and sugar.
A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered
indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market
outcomes.
Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market
was allocated purely by the forces of demand and supply1 with market equilibrium at PE

equilibrium quantity of energy drinks produced and consumed decreased to Qtax, as the supply
curve shifted upwards to Stax . Furthermore, the price paid by consumers increased to Pc from
PE and price received by the energy drinks companies decreased to Pp from PE. In addition,
consumer expenditure on energy drinks decreased as well. Due to indirect tax, this changed from

The company s revenue also decreased significantly from (d+e+f+g+h) to (f+g), as the quantity of

Indirect tax on energy drinks ultimately results in underallocation of resources. Too little of

Conrad Richter s The Light In The Forest
The novel The Light in the Forest portrays the fictional tale of a white boy raised by Indians, who
is sent back to a society he has been raised to hate. He must learn to adapt to the new society, and
he realizes the faults between both cultures as he seeks to find his new identity. The author, Conrad
Richter, states in the beginning that his goal was to create a non biased novelthat portrayed both
cultures equally and give an authentic sensation of life in early America . Conrad Richter s novel
The Lightin the Forest is unbiased between the two cultures, proved through historical events that
happened both in reality and the novel, the views and human nature of both cultures, and the point
of view in which the story is told.
Richter s book is unbiased, supported by the similarity of the historical events in reality and those
in the book. As the European settlers were just arriving, the Indians were willing to make peace and
help the strangers, while the settlers were wary of the generous Indians. In the documentary, We
Shall Remain: After the Mayflower, its shown that the Wamponoag have a meeting with the white
people. As Jenny Hale Pulsipher says, It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven the main character faces many challenges living in
Seattle. He is trying to live a normal life as an American but the community all seems to have a
problem or they are afraid of him. He was forced to be the bad person around the area only because

Most Expensive IT Vulnerability
Most Expensive IT Vulnerability: Ineffective Patch Management Right now, 37% of Internet
users in the US are surfing the web with outdated versions of Java (CSIS, 2015). For
organizations that have not paid close attention to cybersecurity in the past, now is your wakeup
call. According to a recently released study, the average cost of a data breach in the United
States has climbed from $5.9 million to a staggering $6.5 million per breach (Ponemon, 2015).
This is enough to not only hurt many organizations, but also cause irrevocable damage to their
economic standings. The purpose of this paper is to examine what the root cause for most of
these breaches are. From a review of the largest breaches in the past 5 years, I have come down to
this conclusion: Unpatched software is single handedly costing American organizations billions of
dollars every year in expensive and embarrassing securitybreaches.
What are Unpatched Applications?
The first question you may be asking yourself is, What are Unpatched Applications? No
application is perfect; this is a constant in the cybersecurity realm. Vulnerabilities, or holes within
an application or operating system, will continue to be discovered. Once discovered, the developer
will design a fix for the vulnerability and release a patch or update. Once installed, the patch will
close the security flaw that had the potential to be exploited. Within an organization, there is the
possibility that not all the applications have been

Sexism In America
Women in the United States have acquired constitutional rights over the time; however,
discrimination still exists. Sexism occurs frequently in the workplace. In fact, sexism is one of the
main barriers that women face. For example, women in the same job as men usually earn less, even
though both have the same education and skills that are require for completing the job. Indeed,
paying women less than men for the same job is a blatant discriminationthat could be solve by
providing equality among genders. Sexismis a term that describes the inequality among genders.
According to Guynn (2013) the issue of sexism occurs in many companies. Men usually think that
women are not capable of completing certain task because they might not to be strong... Show more

America has always been a nation of immigrants. Over our history, generations of immigrants
seeking a better life for themselves and their families have come to this country and made it
what it is today. Our country has a lot of races such as Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics,
African Americans and many others. I am Hispanic. Being Hispanic has its advantages because
we have the opportunities to practice our own culture that it is enriched with wonderful
traditions and the American culture as well. Another privileged of being Hispanic is being
bilingual. Knowing two languages can help us advance in the workplace. When it comes to
social class, Hispanic are at the lowest rung of the social ladder. We do not have a lot of saying
when it comes to politics. We are consider the largest minority group in the United Sates, but yet
all Hispanics are considered to be a low social class. On the other hand, being Hispanic has its
disadvantages we get stereotype a lot. Many people argue that Hispanics take jobs away, but it
is not true. We have only taken the hard labor jobs such as agriculture; basically, the jobs that no
one else will do. According Pew Hispanic Center (2012) more than a quarter of a Hispanics
[immigrants] are janitors, 350,000 are maids and housekeepers, and 300,000 are
groundskeepers. Despite this, many backbreaking jobs Hispanics perform at low wages provide
goods and services to all Americans. We, Hispanic, are known for our willingness to work hard
for our families. Our culture is very family oriented. We tend to help our own members and work
hard for their best interest. Being Hispanic has taught that I have keep working hard to reach my
goals and never give up no matter what people think about

The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid is a fairy tale by the Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. The tale
is about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a merperson to
gain a human soul and the love of a human prince. The tale was first published in 1837 and has
been adapted to various media including musical theater and animated film. The standard of this

But to gain legs, she must give up her most precious asset, her beautiful voice. There are some
standard elements of teenage life here, including young love, and some degree of rebellion from
ones parents, in this case King Triton, Ariel s father. It was not Ariel s physical beauty that the
Prince loved, but her voice. He is enraptured by the voice even in the presence of Ariel s physical
beauty and great legs. The metaphor here should be obvious. What does a woman lose when she
becomes subservient to a man, or male dominated culture in general? She loses her voice. The
point of the movie is that a young woman s beauty should come not from her physical attributes,
but from her voice, her personality, her self. Metaphorically, without her voice in society, she is
pretty helpless and powerless to change what s going on around her, explain herself, etc. As for the
prince he isn t interested in Ariel just for her looks. It is also important to note that she gets her
reward only after working together with her father, King Triton.
In the original version The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually
visits the Sea Witch, who sells her a potion that gives her legs, in exchange for her tongue. The Sea
Witch cuts her tongue and warns her that once she becomes a human, she will never be able to
return to the sea. Drinking the potion made out of snakes and

Examples Of Flashbacks In Toni Morrison s Beloved
Beloved: How the Past Affects a Person
Beloved is full of intense scenes that leave readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will
happen next. Some of the most powerful scenes are flashbacks, past experiences that characters
come face to face with. What makes these flashbacks so important is that they help make the reader
understand why the characters interact with each other the way they do. In Beloved, Toni Morrison
uses a loose structure and weaves flashbacks into everyday life to create a connection through
which readers can better understand the character s past.
In the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to the idea of flashbacks, which remain short
and are intertwined seamlessly within the text. The readers learn to be active when reading, and
also pay close attention to the details within the flashbacks to learn more about the characters that
their past lives.
The most significant flashbacks in Part One are when the reader learns about Sethe s past, and
how she killed her crawling already? baby. Inside, two boys bled in the sawdust at the feet of a
nigger woman holding a blood soaked child to her chest with one hand and an infant by the heels
in the other (Morrison 175). Here is where the reader first learns how the crawling already baby
dies: Sethe killed her and attempted to kill the rest of the children. When Sethe saw the
schoolteacher, she ran to the shed to try to save her children from slavery. She tried to make the
ultimate sacrifice

Comparing Men And Women In Shakespeare s Othello
Women are looked over in Othello but end up being the downfall of their male counterparts; It
was Desdemona that was Othello s greatest weakness and Emilia was Iago s. This is alluding to
Shakespeare being incredibly progressive in a time where women were widely renowned as
objects of men. By analyzing and comparing aspects of both Emilia and Desdemonain the William
Shakespeare play OthelloThis is illustrated in Othello by comparing the difference in the opinions
between Emilia s and Desdemona s on taking and following orders from men, the double standard
between men and women when it comes to human impulses and urges, and how hard a fight they
will put up against a man. Emilia exhibits the traits of a modern feminist for her time.

Desdemona is oblivious to Othello s plans until he begins to enact them on her. She insists her
innocence during the entire process. Emilia enters Desdemona s chamber unknowing of what
had occurred to find her mistress wailing o falsely, falsely murdered (5.2.144) and a guiltless
death I die (5.2.150). As Emily realizes what had happened she is sent into a rage of defending
Desdemona s faithfulness and pieces together Iago s role in the planting of the idea. Emilia calls
guards and screams at Othello, defending Desdemona. She continually insists Desdemona could
and would never have cheated on Othello and responds to Othello s accusation of Desdemona
being unfaithful by saying o, the more angle she, and you the blacker devil! (5.2.161). Emilia
not only draws on Desdemona s angelic presence, but also Othello s biggest insecurity; his
ethnicity. The action of her referring him to a blacker devil not only associates Othello with the
embodiment of all evil but also stripps him of his accomplishments by taking away his name and
only speaking to his skin color. Iago rushes into the chamber and in an argument between them,
kills Emilia because she exposed his role in the entire thing. Emilia s last dying wish was to die
next to her honorable mistress, proving Emilia s complete devotion to

  • 2. Arguments Against Indigenous Self Government Prior to contact with Europeans, Indigenous peoples relied on their own established ways of political systems and institutions, in other words, Indigenous peoples were a self governing society. However, many of these political systems were legally suppressed and ignored by the federal government as an attempt to assimilate and civilize Indigenous peoples. The 1876 Indian Act dismantled traditional systems of governance and imposed external controls in the form of local Indian agents and the federal bureaucracy of the Department of Indian Affairs (now Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada) on individuals and communities (Henderson, 2006). Indigenous peoples have been trying to get back the right to govern themselves and preserve their cultural identities since the arrival of Europeans, and in addition, there has been a current and long going debate... Canada has signed 22 self government agreements recognizing a wide range of Aboriginal jurisdictions that involve 36 Aboriginal communities across Canada (Self Government, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, 2015), one example being the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. There are many advantages of recognizing the right to self governance within Indigenous communities, which can be seen throughout the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. One advantage of Indigenous self government, as stated by Canadian Indigenous law expert, John Borrows (2016), is that if Indigenous peoples were recognized as having the right to self governance, they d be able to get away from Indian Act (CBC News). The contemporary version of the Indian Act still outlines various rules around reserves, management of band resources, elections, and other aspects of life on a reserve (Henderson, 2006). • 6. Essay on Shifting Efficiency Shifting Efficiency One of the most important and life altering inventions in history is the creation of the automobile. The first model was built with a manual transmission, meaning the operator of the vehicle was responsible for manually changing gears to increase speed. This method of acceleration, while efficient, required the complete attention of the operator, and it sometimes took away the enjoyment of driving. This led to the invention of the automatic transmission, a method by which the operator of the vehicle no longer had to switch gears, as this was done automatically. Since the development of the automatic transmission, there has always been conflict about which method of acceleration is more efficient. Driving a vehicle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When using a standard, learning how to create the equilibrium of letting one foot off the clutch and pressing the other on the gas pedal in first gear could take a while to master. An automatic car, with the process of driving in first gear taken care of magically to most people, is much simpler and less time consuming to learn. All a person has to do is put the gear shift in drive and press on the gas pedal. The final question of efficiency lies within the problem of figuring out which type of transmission is better when racing. In this area, the manual transmission becomes the popular choice, compared to the automatic. An automatic does not give the driver the freedom to shift gears when desired, as this is sometimes necessary when shift variation is a key element to winning a race. The manual transmission allows the driver to choose when it is necessary to shift gears, sometimes giving the racer an edge over someone who is racing with an automatic car. Even though an automatic transmission takes the work out of driving something most people are thankful for, given that some could never handle the task of shifting manually, the standard has its own advantages also. The decision about which transmission is more efficient may never be reached, given the advantages and disadvantages of each. It really depends on the person who buys the car and what it will be ... Proper etiquette is emphasized within the medieval culture, it is used as a sign of respect and admiration to one s superior or equal. However, Savagery is often either celebrated or discounted completely. There are many instances within the epic when an event or a character s actions could be perceived as ignoble or undignified, usually, such acts are frowned upon in medieval literature. However, in The Nibelungenliedthese acts are not only acceptable, in certain instances, they are even praised. Good manners are often used by characters within the epic in order to gain some sort of political or strategical advantage. • 9. Why I Should Not Get Up On Material Possessions I used to be a person who was hung up on material possessions. I was always wanting more, never satisfied with what I had. Whenever I would go to the mall, I would want everything that I saw. If I had money I would always spend it. I was constantly buying things that I didn t need, only used once, or would stay in my closet with the tags on. I felt like I was unfortunate because I didn t have a new outfit every week, and I couldn t get a new pair of shoes every time I walked out the door, but that all changed the summer going into freshman year. My father suggested, to go on a border immersion trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. He thought that it would be a good idea to read what it was like to live on the border. But, no matter how many times we got together or how many books we read, nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to experience while I was down there. I left on July 20 on a plane headed for Laredo, Texas. I would be staying at a relative s near Laredo and then every morning we would cross over the border into Mexico and go work at a daycare center, Valdes Suarez Maria Irene . • 11. Program Implementation Of Public Policy Program Implementation Steps Public policy may be defined as organizing framework of purposes and rationales for government programs that deal with specified societal problems or a complex of programs enacted and implemented by government. Program implementation is that set of activities directed toward putting a program into effect. Three activities, in particular are significant in program implementation. They are organization, interpretation and application. The activity of organization is the establishment or rearrangement of resources units and methods for putting a program into effect. This can happen in several ways. One is the creation of a totally new agency, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affair. Another is merging, upgrading, or dividing existing agencies. More often, programs are assigned to existing agencies, which must still interpret and apply the laws or regulations and develop appropriate implementation methods. Program implementation starts broadly with the intention on the public interest, convenience, and needs. Laws and regulations may be more or less specific in their details, goals, timelines, and intended results. Thus, the responsible agency is in charge of developing operating guidelines and substantive procedures. • 12. Examples Of Consequentialism In Bhagavad Gita Rikin Patel Brian Donohue World Civilization 111 29 October 2014 Research Paper Hinduism (Bhagavad Gita) Arjuna faces the tough decision of facing his own blood in war as he has to fight against his relatives. As a result we get the distinction of duty and consequences, or deontology and consequentialism. Deontology is the idea that believes that actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of their consequence. On the other hand, consequentialism is defined as the position that an action is right if it has good consequences and wrong if it has bad consequences. This is an underlying theme in the Bhagavad Gita as Arjuna seeks help from his cousin, Krishna on whether or not he should fight. The Bhagavad Gita shows the tension that Arjuna faces between duty and consequences which ties into the belief of reincarnation and the purpose of the soul in Hinduism. Arjuna faces conflict when he has to make the decision to fight people that he was once friends with and have to kill them in order to survive. When it comes time to fight Arjuna cannot bring himself together to fight, but Krishna encourages Arjuna to fight by giving him advice through a lot of philosophical matter. In the end this is what motivates Arjuna to fight again. Krishna provides advice according to what Arjuna said about why he did not want to fight anymore. Arjuna s argument can be summarized in two main points: the argument from personal happiness and the argument from evil. The advice that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Symbolism In My Papa s Waltz By Theodore Roethke In the poem My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke, the meaning of the piece varies on the readers` perspective. Some think that this is one of happy memories between a son and father. Others think that the waltz covers up the truth of child cruelty. In my opinion, the symbolism and the imagery in My Papas Waltz gave me the automatic thoughtof the abusive relationship between the father and son. But after investigating the poem I could begin to see the positive side. After reading the first line of Roethke s piece, My Papas Waltz, I automatically assumed this poem had negative meaning. The first couple lines state, The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy (Lines 1 2). Meaning the father has been drinking, and not just a little. He was so drunk that even the smell of his breath could make his son, feel a bit light headed. Alcohol makes people do crazy things so this could possibly give the father the idea and the ability to harm the child. Because in most cases it is not a great situation when a drunken adult presents himself to a child. This poem could be comprehended as a description of a young boy s experience of abuse from his father. But I hang on like death seems to show a child s frightful feeling from having to face a drunken father. The image in my head here is that of the father and his child kitchen around the kitchen with the boy having to hold on like death because it s a scary situation for the young boy. • 17. Strategic Analysis Of Pixar, Winston Churchill Strategic Analysis: Pixar Winston Churchill once stated However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results . The current business environment is rapidly evolving due to the pressures of changing technology as well as the increasing demands firms are under to expand regionally and globally. Successful organizations in this often chaotic and changing environment must continually scan their internal and external conditions in order to respond proactively to market conditions and new trends. Firm leadership needs to not only have a vision for the organization s future but also the ability to critically analyze the internal processes and structure of the firm in comparison to the outcomes or results of the firm s current orientation. Strategy and vision are meaningless if the way they are being executed does not provide the organization a sustainable competitive advantage. Therefore it is critical that firm leadership examine how their organization is implementing their strategy to determine its effectiveness and results. When examining how a firm is implementing their strategy they should examine the internal organization and processes of the organization. For example, American companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Apple all have subsidiaries in Ireland to take advantage of Ireland s low corporate tax rate (Semeuls). However, the low corporate tax rate was not the only reason the country had flourished. There were several other factors that helped boost Ireland s economy. One of them included Ireland joining the European market in the 1990s, which allowed goods to flow freely across the countries in the European Union. Soon, Ireland became an entry point within Europe and large corporations started to use Ireland to manufacture goods and sell the goods to other European countries without the attachment of any tariffs. In addition to Ireland joining the European market, Ireland attracted many corporations to its country because it was primarily an English speaking country. This helped in the ease of communication between the Irish government and the foreign corporations. Another factor that helped boost Ireland s overall economy was that the Irish government passed a number of educational reforms which led to a significant number of educated graduates that came out of Irish schools (Semeuls). In the 1990s and 2000s, Ireland became a highly attractive country for international companies because it acted as an easy trade center within the European Single Market. Also they explain how something as simple as a name can affect one s life. In the book Freakonomics, the writers seek to expand a reader s knowledge of economicsthrough the main argument that personal incentive is a hidden factor for most occurrences using statistics and algorithms. Some norms carry greater significance in our lives than others. The terminology mores was inclined to norms that are extensively observed and hold extensive moral significance. Mores also means taboos of society, things that are not accepted, such as chewing with one s mouth closed is expected or eating in a sloppy way and at a fast pace is not an acceptable behavior. Mores classify what is merited and what isn t. When a norm is violated it is defined as deviance and even though the word deviance has a negative connotation to it, it s not. Deviance means and individual is behaving differently from what society feels is normal behavior. If a person is deviant from norms it doesn t necessary means that they are doing something bad or immoral. Component commonality calls for the use of common components in a variety of products. This reduces costs not only by reducing inventory cost but also through reduced material cost, reduced production cost, and reduced product obsolescence. For example, a computer manufacturer can design common components such as memory and disk drives and use different combinations of these components to produce different finished products. Component modularity: The principle of component modularity recommends that common subsystems be designed as modules to meet a broad range of feature requirements. This reduces the number of components that must be produced, kept in materials and repair parts inventory, and integrated into the product during the production process. This reduces procurement, manufacturing, and inventory costs, leading to a lower supply chain cost. I acknowledge that it is unfair to make absolute demands without a full understanding of the forces in others lives. Thankfully, my group reacted to my empathy with reciprocity, and together we created a warm, accommodating environment that enabled our success. Overcoming Weaknesses: Decision Making At the start of the semester, the Birkman identified decision making efficiency as an area for personal improvement. At a score of 92, I need plenty of time for complex decisions to avoid indecision when pressured (Birkman, 2017). While careful thought has its advantages, I do not respond well when time is of the essence. This was true across the board within my team, which had needs scores ranging from 74 98 with an average of 90 (Birkman, 2017). Our knowledge of our own needs helped us overcome the challenges it posed. Firstly, whenever possible, we would bring up potential issues at a meeting, then disband to allow everyone time to reflect on their own before coming back together to discuss. This alleviated the pressure of making a snap decision we may later regret. Of course, there were situations where it was not practical to delay decisions. In those instances, we acknowledged our own tendency towards indecision, but urged each other to express our gut feelings, make the best decision possible give the constraints, and avoid unnecessary worry after a consensus had been reached. • 44. Analysis Of The Kite Runner One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away. We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir. Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional. Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him. In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad. The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written novel will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Introduction of Indirect Taxing on Energy Drinks in France This article discusses how France introduced an indirect tax on energy drinks at €1 per liter. The tax was imposed to tackle alcohol consumption among France s young population and energy drinks consumption due to its high levels of caffeine and sugar. A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market outcomes. Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market was allocated purely by the forces of demand and supply1 with market equilibrium at PE (original price) and QE (original quantity). After a tax of €1 per liter was imposed, the equilibrium quantity of energy drinks produced and consumed decreased to Qtax, as the supply curve shifted upwards to Stax . Furthermore, the price paid by consumers increased to Pc from PE and price received by the energy drinks companies decreased to Pp from PE. In addition, consumer expenditure on energy drinks decreased as well. Due to indirect tax, this changed from (d+e+f+g+h) to (b+d+f+g) since consumers are purchasing less of the good as the price increased. The company s revenue also decreased significantly from (d+e+f+g+h) to (f+g), as the quantity of output decreased. However, the government received tax revenue of (b+d), increasing its budget. Indirect tax on energy drinks ultimately results in underallocation of resources. Too little of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conrad Richter s The Light In The Forest The novel The Light in the Forest portrays the fictional tale of a white boy raised by Indians, who is sent back to a society he has been raised to hate. He must learn to adapt to the new society, and he realizes the faults between both cultures as he seeks to find his new identity. The author, Conrad Richter, states in the beginning that his goal was to create a non biased novelthat portrayed both cultures equally and give an authentic sensation of life in early America . Conrad Richter s novel The Lightin the Forest is unbiased between the two cultures, proved through historical events that happened both in reality and the novel, the views and human nature of both cultures, and the point of view in which the story is told. Richter s book is unbiased, supported by the similarity of the historical events in reality and those in the book. As the European settlers were just arriving, the Indians were willing to make peace and help the strangers, while the settlers were wary of the generous Indians. There are some standard elements of teenage life here, including young love, and some degree of rebellion from ones parents, in this case King Triton, Ariel s father. It was not Ariel s physical beauty that the Prince loved, but her voice. He is enraptured by the voice even in the presence of Ariel s physical beauty and great legs. The metaphor here should be obvious. What does a woman lose when she becomes subservient to a man, or male dominated culture in general? She loses her voice. The point of the movie is that a young woman s beauty should come not from her physical attributes, but from her voice, her personality, her self. Metaphorically, without her voice in society, she is pretty helpless and powerless to change what s going on around her, explain herself, etc. As for the prince he isn t interested in Ariel just for her looks. It is also important to note that she gets her reward only after working together with her father, King Triton. In the original version The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually visits the Sea Witch, who sells her a potion that gives her legs, in exchange for her tongue.
