3. What Is Racism In Heart Of Darkness
Chinua Achebe creates a strong argument against Joseph Conrad, attempting to point
out the racism innate within Conrad s Heart of Darkness. In Achebe s essay, he
explicitly said, Joseph Conrad was a thoroughgoing racist (343). Achebe depicts the
narration, and setting of Heart of Darknessto further prove his point. But, he falls
short in one aspect of his argument, when he decides to declassify Heart of Darkness
as a great work of art. To begin, Chinua Achebebelieves that the character and Joseph
Conradare so similar in nature, that whatever racism Marlow, the main character,
shows must also be a trait of Conrad. Achebe says, Marlow seems to me to enjoy
Conrad s complete confidence a feeling reinforced by the close similarities... Show

The very nature of the book is crawling with dehumanizing and objectifying
remarks. Achebe had successfully argued his point of the racism in Conrad, but he
had failed with the addition of an extra remark. The fact that he dissociates Heart of
Darkness from great art is the flaw in his argument. Ideology and art should not
associate each other with the objective decision in deciding if some art is great art.
Everyone is entitled to their personal decision for liking art, but this subjective
conclusion should not invade the objective resolution of the greater classification of
4. ##ymbolism And Guilt In The Poisonwood Bible By
Barbara...
People face difficult and life altering challenges every day. Some of the bad times
are more complex and affect more people than other types can. A challenge can
start out as a family trying to help the less fortunate, but then take a turn for the
worse. Even if it wasn t a specific person s fault, he or she still feels guilty. In The
Poisonwood Bibleby Barbara Kingsolver, the author uses symbolism and allusions to
prove the theme everyone has and deals with guiltdifferently. For starters, Barbara
Kingsolver uses a lot of symbolism, especially rain. According to Thomas C. Foster
s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, it is stated that rain can be restorative
and cleansing (Foster 83). In more simpler terms, rain symbolizes rebirth and
happiness. However in this story, the rain symbolizes hard times and guilt. Nelson
told Adah it was our offenses that brought on this rainy season (Kingsolver 172). If
rain in The Poisonwood Bible meant rebirth and cleansing, the theme of guilt would
not be as pronounced.
The Price Family is very religious and has a strong belief in God. Therefore, it only
makes sense to have allusions throughout the story. Allusions bring the theme across
because it helps the readers to see what happens when someone is guilty. For
instance, if the girls do something they are not supposed to do the father, Nathan,
would tell the girls you have The Verse (Kingsolver 59). The Verse is a punishment to
make them feel guilty for something wrong they

Shin Buddhists : Zen is not the answer
On October 24, 2015 the New York Buddhist Church was holding an Autumn Festival
Service. Amanda and I attended the event from 12 4 pm. This Buddhist Church in
particular is Jodoshinshu Buddhism which originated in Japan. This type of
Buddhism is also called Shin Buddhism for short, within the school of True Pure
Land Buddhism, which is based on Mahayana Buddhism. The main temple is in
Kyoto, Japan and was founded by Shinran Shonin. This type of Buddhism is
practiced widely in Japan. The New York City location in particular was established
in 1938 by Reverend Hozen Seki and his wife, Satomi.(NYBC)
The outside of the church is very humble in appearance. It doesn t look like a place
of worship at all from the outside, but the statue of Shinran Shonin in the front makes
the building seem particularly important as you pass by. As we ascended the stairs,
there was a small garden of flowers surrounding the Shinran Statue, which survived
the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. There was a hand painted sign that said Autumn
Festival hanging from the front fence. The foundation of the church is slightly
elevated as well.
On the inside, there is a lobby with stairs going up and down, and an entrance to
another room. Here it was lined with tables of food and merchants and a silent
auction of traditional Japanese items and souvenirs. The majority of the people filling
the room were

Because of this, the chances increase for people to develop mutual sympathy and
understanding and to reduce their prejudices. For example, in Kazakhstan a lot of
jobs provided in order expected to help demobilize paramilitary groups as the peace
process is put in place. In the end, sympathy and understanding can lead to a decrease
of tension not only in the Kazakhstan but also all over the world.
Strengthening communities
Tourism can add to the vitality of communities in many ways. One example is that
events and festivals of which local residents have been the primary participants and
spectators are often rejuvenated and developed in response to tourist interest. The
jobs created by tourism can act as a vital incentive to reduce emigration from rural
areas. Local people can also increase their influence on tourism development, as well
as improve their job and earnings prospects, through tourism related professional
training and development of business and organizational skills.

7. Roman Art Vs Greek Art
I ve always been fascinated with Greek and Roman methodology. As a child I spent
countless hours watching classic films like Jason and the Argonauts or Hercules
starring Steve Reeves. I d like to begin by comparing a few pieces of art that I
recently discovered at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology. I
ve selected two pieces of art, one from the Roman and the other from the Greek
collection. Each of the pieces symbolize death and sacrificing. Vastly different in
texture and design each piece connects feasting and the celebration of life to
sacrificing. First, Greek piece is a Terracotta Votive Pinax, 450 425 BC and the
Roman piece is a Umbro Etruscan Terracotta, 3rd BC. Each piece represents a
symbolic circle of life that celebrated life and honored the gods through sacrificing.
Both Roman and Greekssocieties showed continued reference to the gods by

Movie like Troy starring Brad Pitt and 300 starring Gerard Butler are hugely
responsible for the next wave of excitement associated with these cultures. While
comic books may seem somewhat juvenile, it s apparent that movie characters like
the Flash are mirror images of mythological figures like Mercury. They each
possessed incredible speed and wings which were central to their physical being.
Another character Thor was a combination of Greek, Roman and Norse mythology
all rolled up into one as well. Many of these figures were intertwined with faith,
culture, mingling human fathers or mothers. While we may not a return to sacrificing
as part of our culture, it is apparent that we will continue to see quite a bit of Greek

The higher the GDP the higher is the country s standards of living and the lower
the GDP the lower is the country s standard of living. According to (Abuqamar,
Coomans, Louckx, 2011), unemployment is an important factor in measuring
country s economic strength like GDP per capita. If the unemployment level is
high, then economic growth is very low because they have a negative relationship.
A sustainable growth accompanied by macroeconomic policies that promotes
employment will eventually cut down the level of unemployment in the economy
and growth is considered as a solution to decrease unemployment (Hussain, Siddiqi,
Iqbal, 2010). This is true because when government wants to increase output by
building infrastructures and the like. They create job opportunities for those who
are unemployed thus, alleviating unemployment in the economy. More people
will get jobs and earn to sustain their standard of living or even increase their
standard of living depending on their salaries. B. Average Years in School
Education is very important in everyone s lives. It is our foundation of knowledge
which will reflect us. Even though going to school and doing homework are
boring, we will still benefit from it because we learn and by learning we become
mature and responsible. According to (Weisberg Meltz), the higher the level of

concert was the guest conductor and solo violinist Adrian Butterfield. The
performed pieces were Welcome to all the pleasures, Leclair s Violin Concerto in

3 in D Major. The string arrangements in the beginning show similarities with J. S.
Bach s popular work. In this movement, there is a slow theme in minor mode,
which keeps coming back in different variations. Thus, I think this movement is in
the rondo form. After adagio, the mood of the piece gets brighter . Allegretto is in
the minuet form and it is build upon themes similar to each other. These themes
consist of parallel and contrasting melodies. Texture wise this symphony is
homophonic. One can hear the different dynamics, but clearly it is not what this
piece was written for. Speed and virtuosity is in the foreground. After Adrian
Butterfield showed the audience his virtuosic abilities, he turned his face again to
the orchestra and Cappella Antica joined them for the second time. We were back
to Henry Purcell with My heart is inditing, Z. 30. This piece is at a moderate tempo
and has polyphonic as well as melismatic choral parts. They closed the anthem with
a magnificent Alleluia part. The McGill Baroque Orchestra is a typical Baroque
orchestra consists of eight violin players, of which the half played violin I and the
other half violin II; three violists, two cellists, a violone player, two harpsichord and
an organ, which were played by five different performers, and, of course, the guest
conductor and the solo violinist Adrian Butterfield. They were accompanied by a
choir of male and female singers
10. Moonlight Basin Is Guilty Of Negligence For Not Clearly...
Issue: This issue is whether Moonlight Basin is guilty of negligence for not clearly
naming and marking a hazardous stretch that resulted from grading a cat track above
it on the ski slope.
Facts: This case was filed by Brian Kopeikin against Moonlight Basin alleging that
Moonlight Basin did not fulfill its duty of reasonable care. On the day of the
incident, conditions on the mountain were perfect. The skies were clear, there was
little to no wind, and the snow was powder. Mr. Kopeikin, a very experienced skier
(p.2), was skiing Upper Elkhorn when he came upon unmarked and unnatural
hazards. These hazards allegedly were the result of negligent acts by Moonlight. The
ski run, Upper Elkhorn, intersected an unmarked and unnamed cat track that was
lined with boulders. The cat track was designed in a way that did not allow
Kopeikin to see the hazardous boulder field ahead of him. The boulder field
spanned over fifty feet and was, comprised of large, craggy, and sharp rocks (p.3).
It is important to note that this boulder field was allegedly unnatural and resulted
because of the way Moonlight graded the cat track. It also needs to be
acknowledged that there was no warning to skiers that they were coming up on a
hazard. When Kopeikin came up to the hazard, he was skiing under control at a safe
speed. As he made his way across the cat track, he fell into the boulder field. Again, it
is alleged that he had no opportunity to avoid the hazard, and he sustained serious
injuries as

In the early hours on June 28, 1969, police stormed into the Stonewall Inn, a gay
bar and refuge. The police began to batter the people inside the bar and arrested
thirteen others. As the violence escalated, bottles, coins, and stones were thrown at
the police. Activist Sylvia Rivera was one of the first to throw a bottle into the ranks
of police officers; she exclaimed, It s the Revolution! Those bottles thrown in
retaliation to discrimination and assault marked the beginning of a movement to
bring about rights and acceptance for the LGBTcommunity. My metaphorical bottles
were thrown timidly under the table at first, but now, they sail across the sky in a
perfect arc and crash against the constrictions placed around the rights of LGBT
Americans, the constrictions once placed around me. The journey I ve been
undergoing since discovering my sexuality has been one similar to a labyrinth with
all of its dead ends and confusion. My journey has undergone an immense amount of
evolution that has transformed me into the person I am today. My freshman year
ended with a newfound understanding of the way that high school works and the
realization that I am bisexual. At the time, I was completely ashamed of the person
that I was. Even though the majority of my friends were supportive of gay rights, I
was convinced that once they found out, they would hate me. Coming outwas
unimaginable; just the thought of it made me nauseous. The fact that I live in a tiny

Fluoride has been put into the public water supply to help babies. When you re older
it helps with resistance to enamel destroying acids, cavities, and other kinds of tooth
decay as said by the American Dental Association. Gradually Studies show that

For most cities, every $1 invested in water fluoridation saves $38 in dental
treatment costs. Many people opposing this view think of it as a harsh chemical but
really it s naturally present in groundwater and oceans. Even though we are adding
more fluoride to the water, water fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride to a
recommended level for preventing tooth decay. and fluoride is similar to fortifying
other foods and beverages, like fortifying salt with iodine, milk with vitamin D,
orange juice with calcium and bread with folic acid. People oppose water
fluoridation because they think it is an unsafe practice ...there is no dispute that
fluoridation is causing millions of children to develop dental fluorosis, a discoloration
of the teeth that is caused by excessive fluoride intake. this may be true, but that is if
you consume much more than 2 liters of water a day.

members and students were mixed, but some of them were very sad. I think at that
point in the war, everyone was just anxious to see how the war was going to turn
out and if their loved ones would return. I looked at the yearbook for the Class of
1944 Prescott, Arizona. I could not believe that these kids had to deal with going to

The negative impact this has had on Ireland is that most local businesses in Ireland
has been closed as they lose their customers and relations with companies that help
give the local businesses the financial support they need, because of the local

FDIs abilities to lower their prices.
In an optimistic view, Ireland have been sorting out this negative impact by

they may need.

There are several differences in themes, writing styles, and conclusions found within
historical British plays, in particularly the plays of Everyman, The Second
Shepherds Play, Shakespeare s Twelfth Night, and Marlowe s The Tragical History
of Doctor Faustus. These plays reflect many of their times heated topics and
concerns. While the endings to each of these plays significantly contrast, the themes
within each play fully prepare audiences for the ending to which will be further
explained. Of these plays, Everyman and Doctor Faustusare perhaps the most similar,
yet the most contrasting. While both appear to explore the subject of death, the act
in which they come to their conclusions differ greatly. For instance, Everyman tries
repeatedly to convince company to join him on his journey to death, while Faustus
always has company attempting to persuade him away from his evil deal with
Lucifer or vice versa. As they approach the ending, the stories become opposite as
they were in the beginning. Everyman eventually finds his company, while Faustus
must face the consequences of his deal with Lucifer all alone. The ending of
Everyman leaves the audiencewith a peaceful feeling, knowing that they too can be
accompanied at death by doing good deeds. However, The Tragical History of
Doctor Faustus leaves the audience with a tragic, morbid ending as they watch him
join Lucifer, alone and in despair, regretful of his deal. Shakespeare s Twelfth Night

18. Classroom Organization Focuses On The Physical
Environment...
Classroom organization focuses on the physical environment of the classroom.
Effective teachers understand that organizing a safe classroom environment is
essential for optimizing student learning and reducing distractions. For example, if
student desks are arranged in a way that makes it difficult for the teacher to circulate
the room, student behavior is likely to be less responsible than when the teacher can
easily reach every student. Aspects of the of a classroom s physical arrangement that
effective teachers should address to increase the probability of responsible student
behavior and increased engagement in the classroom include: using a classroom
arrangement consistent with instructional goals and activities, keeping high traffic
areas free of congestion, ensuring students are easily seen by the teacher, keeping
frequently used teaching materials and student supplies readily accessible, and being
certain students can easily see instructional presentations and displays. When initially
considering the physical arrangement of the classroom, effective teachers will need to
consider the most common delivery of instruction and the instructional tasks the
students will be asked to perform. Will students spend the majority of learning
experiences in cooperative groups or work independently? Will they gather daily on
the carpet or another common area for discussions? Will students rotate frequently
throughout the class period? With these questions answered, the effective

Throughout the history of mankind, many genocides have occurred around the
world because there is much hatred among specific kinds of people. A genocide is
the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular
ethnic group or nation. An example of a genocide in Germany is the Holocaustwhere
Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, showed the Jews experience from the horrors,
tortures, and killings in the death camps. At the same time, a mass execution was
happening in Nanjing, China, where the Japanese soldiers were slaughtering and

The Jews and Chinese suffered beatings from their oppressors while they were
trying to recover from their recent injuries. In the memoir, Night, Idek, a German
Kapo, conducted the Jews viciously, making almost any injuries very difficult to
recover from. For example, Idek was viciously beating Elie when they crossed
paths. Idek lost his temper and caused himself to jump on Elie. Idek violently beat
Elie continuously until Elie was covered in blood. Even though Elie tried not to
howl in pain in the way of accepting his false, Idek mistook him and beat Elise
harder and harder (Wiesel 53). This was an example of cruelty because Elie was
being beaten for just being in Idek s path while Idek was venting his anger. Idek s
actions showed cruelty because he attacked Elie without stopping to let Elie recover
even though, Elie was nearly dying from the beating. Another example of beatings,
was that in the Nanjing database of war, Alan Axelrod s The Rape of Nanjing, the
war crime database stated that Atrocities reported and (in many cases) documented

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just

and the Montagues as New York. At one of the games between them taking place in
Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right away. Although their rivals,
they do not realize who they are until after the game. In my favorite scene, Act 4

After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then
I would direct the person playing Lord Capulet to walk around and talk to himself
about random things like caterer, flowers, place, etc... and then start talking about
his rewards because, as it says above, all he cares about is what is in it for him.
Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I
had the chance to direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized version I created, then
the lights for Act 4 Scene 2 would be bright, like fluorescent lights were
everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding a phone that lights up, we
would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with it. That would
need it s own lighting. The camera angle if we ever filmed it would move from
place to place. I believe that it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else
would answer while he is on his phone. The camera when Juliet enters would be
focused on her, maybe with her running into the room where her father is. All of
the actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord Capulet would
be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie would be added to
this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The suit will also
show that even at home, Lord Capulet is all about the money.
Romeo and Juliet already has many modernized versions

The Sami people are as close you can get to a real life fairy tale. They live in the far
off mountains of Scandinavia, one of the most beautiful places in the world, and
singing songs to express their feelings is a major part of their culture. They even
herd the same animals as Santa Claus, the adorable reindeer, for a living. But while
everything about the Sami may seem like it s all sugarplum and gumdrops, the
reality is from ideal. Reindeer herding is by no means easy, or profitable, and it s

As a result, the Sami have developed two different methods to herding reindeer;
intensive herding and extensive herding have rose to be the prominent herding
patterns of the mountain and forest Sami respectfully. Extensive herding is when a
Samby have a large number of reindeer and let them roam free for most of the year.
A couple of times a year, the herd is rounded up and separated by Samby, and again
later by family, so that each Sami member knows how many reindeer they own. The
herd is gathered only during these separations and two seasonal migrations, once in
the winter and once in the spring. Other than that, the reindeer are left to their own
devices. Intensive herding is completely different. An intensive Sami herder has a lot
less reindeer, but they spend a lot more time with them. The reindeer are not left to
roam anywhere, the Sami communities keep close tabs on every reindeer to make
sure nothing happens to their investment. They migrate as well, but not as far as their
mountain peers.
While reindeer represent the more practical aspect of Sami culture, yoiking is the
cornerstone of the spiritual side. Yoiking is how the Sami shamans communicate to
the gods, but it is not limited to just religious practitioners. All members of the Sami
community were encouraged to yoik, and it survived many attempts by the Lutheran
church to squash this practice. Yoiking is a complicated concept to explain to
outsiders, it is very abstract with a definition varying depending

Separate Muslims from State Outline
Throughout the depths of recorded history Muslims have constantly committed mass
murders upon innocent people in the name of Islam. According to long established
conventional Islamic views, Muhammad s revelations start the Qur an off in 610.
Dating back to as early as 627, the Prophet Muhammad s followers have been
recorded of murdering large numbers of non believers and even believers for that
matter (Ye or, 1985). While researching wars declared in the name of Islam, the words
convert or die (more often than not they surfaced together making the claim
convert or die ) surfaced exceedingly often. Despite the common belief imprinted
into the minds of nearly every United States citizen/civilian whom attended or is
attending public school with the U.S., oppressing a people based off of their
religious beliefs has the ability to be beneficial to the world on a global scale.
Muslims should not be allowed to act as political advocates considering Islam
gives approval of segregation, provides obligations of the religions followers to
commit senseless acts of violence, and because of the fact that Islam allows
systematic lying as a religious policy. Throughout this research essay we will
discuss facts in regards to traditional and modern Islamic ideology while deciding
whether someone of such beliefs has a place in a position

Position Paper on Stephen Covey s, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
MG 401 Senior Seminar in Management Introduction In 1989, Stephen Covey s
book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People started a landmark revolution in how
we think about time and life management. In this book, Covey presents seven
principles for developing effectiveness in our private and public lives. By developing
these habits, one moves from being dependent on other people to being and acting
independently. Then we learn how to move to the more advanced state of
interdependence and successful Cooperation. As a part of the seven habits, Covey
introduced important and powerful techniques of time management under the habit
of Put First Things First. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Argument Stephen Covey has much to say on the qualities of effective people.
Covey s purpose in detailing the seven habits is to help people improve
themselves. The seven habits are woven into a diagram that shows the working of
all seven habits in communion. When viewing the diagram, one is reminded of
Benjamin Franklin s engraving of the snake which was divided into thirteen
pieces, with the caption Join or Die. Each of the seven habits is integral to viewing
the picture as a whole, as well as seeing the development from dependence to
independence to interdependence. The first three habits, which lead to
independence, a private victory, lead to the final four steps, which include public
victory. My favorite quote of the book is It is nobler to give yourself completely to
one individual than to labor diligently for the salvation of the masses. (Page 201).
My job places me in a position of leadership over other leaders. Often I see these
leaders locked into a limited vision when faced with a difficult situation. They see
only a win/lose or lose/lose scenario. I reflect back on this book frequently and
think about the book s section on win/win and seeing outside the box. The first habit
talks about being proactive; being proactive is the foundation of the entire seven
habits paradigm. In a sense, all the other habits are types of being proactive. This
entails a realization that you are a person who
27. Life At The Belle Isle
Every year, thousands of people cross the Macarthur bridge onto a beautiful island
known as Belle Isle. Here is a place where someone can discover all 4 seasons, view
some aquatic life at the Belle Isle aquarium, or just take in the breathtaking views
of the skylines of Detroit and Windsor, created as a place where Detroiters can
relax and play, to be able to release all of their stress and trouble. Belle Isle with
such a rich history and majestic architecture, made this island a beautiful piece of art
and the true gem of Detroit.
Settlement of the island began with the founding of Detroit in 1701, which was
discovered when King Louis XIV wanted to find a place in the region to set up a
fur trading center, a place where they can build a fort to create a barrier to fend off
any possible invasion from the British. (Oldenburg 1983 1) The King commissioned
Antoine De La Mothe Cadillac, who traveled down from Montreal into the straights
of the Detroit River and found that the high river banks in the area would offer the
protection they needed, (Rodriguez 2003 10) this led to the creation of Fort
Pontchartrain, which would later be known as the city of Detroit. Cadillac showed
interest in the islands that surrounded this area, one that went by the name of Hog
Island or, as the French called it, Isle aux Cochons; (Oldenburg 1983 1) which was
used to confine the hogs kept by the French. The legend states that the hogs were sent

Pettibon System for Chiropractic Care The Chiropractic care primarily focusses on
the treatment of ailments related to the nervous system and the musculoskeletal
system without the usage of drugs. The patients are subjected to various rehabilitative
and therapeutic exercise programs. In the recent times, the Pettibon system is being
practiced widely by many chiropractic physicians and claims to be one of the best

programs for the hard and soft tissues of the spine. The spinal corrections demands
involvement of the entire spine than just one vertebrae or segment. The re alignment

The weight values depend on the extremity of the spinal displacement that has to be
corrected. The patients are required to wear the weights daily for about 20 minutes
until the spine is fully corrected from its displacement. The weights will cause
changes in the center of mass of the head, thoracic cage and the pelvis. This causes
the spine to send correct sensory input to the nervous system. In order to balance the
body weight, the organizing energy of the nervous system will cause the spinal
muscles involved to relax and other spinal muscles to contract. This will result in the
correction and the repositioning of the spine relative to the
33. Muslimism In To Kill A Mockingbird
In Harper Lee s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, the reader is introduced to the
extended metaphor of the mockingbird. The mockingbird is symbolic of many
characters throughout the novel. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird, as mockingbird do
nothing but sing and bring joy to the world. Tom Robinson is the main character in
the novel who symbolizes the mockingbirdbecause he is an innocent man who works
hard to help others in any way he can, but because he is black he is treated unfairly.
In today s society many groups of people symbolize the mockingbird just like Tom

treated differently because of what they look like.

Muslims and disabled people are two examples of a mockingbird because of what
they look like. Many people have this stereotype in their heads that all muslims are

34. Descriptive Essay On Living In A Room
Living in a Dorm Room While most freshman choose to live in a dorm room their
first year of college, there can be some negative and positive outcomes when living
with someone else. It can be hard to cope with the other person or it can be easy to
cope with the other person you are sharing a room with. Sometimes on the other
hand, it can easily become dramatically annoying, difficult, and disruptive to others
in the room, like I think it did to me. Although I do believe living in a dorm can be
much of a transformation from living in a house, every collegestudent, like I did last
year, has to experience the part of living in a dorm. Or experience being in a dorm
room at one point during their college experience, if he/she chooses to go the
college route. Last year, while living in a college dorm at my other college before I
became a transfer student, I had to share my room with one other girl that was a
thrower in Track and Field, who was all muscle and about a foot taller than me
topping off at probably 6 3 . I was terrified of her, if I did something wrong or if I
said something wrong in general, she would have probably kicked my butt,
literally. So, I decided from the first time I saw her to keep things to myself and
mind my own opinion, of course not telling her my point of view on everything she
did wrong, because I did not want to get hurt. It all started when she never cleaned
up after herself, which made it very easy for me to become annoyed by her and

Humor. Mockery. Relationship Goals. Can you consider these three things in a story
about slavery? Slavery is typically a sensitive and serious topic. In Charles W.
Chesnutt s short story, The Passing of Grandison and Quentin Tarantino s film,
Django Unchained , these three components were combined for entertainment
purposes. In this essay, I will implement the comparison that both the short storyand
film shows with the three component of humor, mockery and the relationship goal
of a slave. The Passing of Grandison was humorous in many ways. The humor
started the Colonel s son, Dick Owens, trying to win a girl s heart by doing
something kind by freeing a slave by taking him to Canada. Chesnutt used humor by
exposing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this story, Chesnutt changes the reader s initial perception of the characters, which
was humorous. Such as, even though Charity somewhat persuades Dick Owens to
proceed in losing his father s slave, she never believe that he would actually succeed.
Dick returns home, and Charity Lomax hilariously marries him, as she was mildly
impressed her with his act. In the movie, Django Unchained, Taratino humor comes in
condemning the importance of slavery, which he makes fun of events and groups of
people that existed during the time of slavery. In the movie, there is a white
German bounty hunter named Dr. Schultz seeks out a slave named Django and
buys him because he needed him to find some men he is looking for. What so
hilarious about this was that Dr. Schultz could have used anybody beside a slave
that was on the same plantation with the men that Django might have known, he
was not even certain that Django knew of these men he was looking for. Also, in
the movie, Taratino made the scene with Django changing wardrobe to be a
hilarious part of the movie. You can say that Django went from rags to riches, after
Django s freedom Dr. Schultz offers to buy him a new suit whatever he wanted.
Django selects a blue two piece with lace cravat and knickerbockers, he assumes
that s what gentlemen (a free slave) would wear, It was funny seeing Django walk in
his new wardrobe because he thought he politically
36. Symbolism In Fences By August Wilson
Keep Love in or Lock it Out?: An Analysis of Symbolism in Fences Symbolism is
defined as an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and
indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. In Fences
by August Wilson, symbolism is used heavily throughout the play in order to
represent deeper meanings and add to the emotion of the storyline. In order for the
playto have so much depth and emotion, symbolism is crucial to the work itself and
the heavy topics that are being discussed. Wilson s play examines racial barriers in
the 1950 s as readers follow the life of Troy Maxson and his personal struggles. The
audience is quickly introduced to Troy s best friend Bono, his wife Rose, his brother

This is a representation of not only his poverty, but also his old and tattered
baseball dreams. Continuously, toward the end of the play Troy and Cory fight
each other with a baseball bat suggesting that Troy is sabotaging Cory s athletic
career due to his own failure with baseball and therefore will lose his son as a result
of this betrayal. Baseball is a constant throughout the play and it ties everything
together. It is a symbol that stands for the hardships in Troy s life, as well as the
way that Cory is so much like Troy, and even the poverty Troy has suffered through
his entire life. Rose asks Troy to build a fence around their house, which takes Troy
majority of the play to finally finish. When Troy questions why Rose is insisting
on him building a fence Mr. Bono tells him, some people build fences to keep
people in...others to keep people out (Wilson II.i). Rose sees the fence she asked
Troy to build as a way to keep love and family in, but Troy sees it as a way to keep
threats and people out, as well as for protection. To Rose, the fence is more than
just a project. As Bono says to Troy, Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves
you (Wilson II.i). The fence is a symbol of her love, and her longing for the fence to
be built signifies the responsibility she takes on to nurture her family and create a
loving environment. Troy works on this fence throughout majority of the play and he
takes a while to finally
37. St. Lawrence By Gian Lorenzo Bernini, And David By...
The sculptures to be examined are St. Lawrence by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and
David by Michelangelo. Starting with the obvious, both of these works are
sculptures. Both of these works are also marble. Although both of the sculptures
use the same material, there is a difference in the way that they use it. Bernini was
able to create many different textures in order to show the difference between the
flames and the skin of the saint. For Michelangelo, one can look and tell that it is a
human and that he has hair per se, but he does not have the skill of texture quite
like Bernini. St. Lawrence was completed in 1617, about a century after
Michelangelo s David which was completed around 1501 04. Bernini s sculpture is

Their bodies are defined and muscular. We know that Michelangelo spent time in
Rome, becoming impressed with the muscular bodies of hellenistic sculptures. He
was interested in their heroic scale and superhuman power and beauty, incorporating
that into his own works, especially in his David. We also know that Bernini spent
time in Rome as well, perhaps also being influenced by the hellenistic sculptures.
Both of the sculptures are also seen in the nude, and if not almost nude. David is
completely nude, while St. Lawrence has a small drape of clothing covering himself.
Bernini seems to be capturing his figure in one split moment of time. St. Lawrence
is perceived in an awkward position, one that he definitely would not be able to
hold for a long period of time. If time were to resume, the flames would continue
cooking St. Lawrence s body and he would continue to burn. For Michelangelo s
David, he has a stable stance. If time were to resume in this instance, we would still
see David standing there. He would be able to hold that pose, continuing to stare
off into the distance for moments longer. Although it looks like David could move
at any moment, if we look at the two side by side, David almost appears to be
immobile compared to the shape and state of St. Lawrence. If we were to press
pause and then play again, David could remain in place, while St. Lawrence would
immediate move due to the way Bernini has portrayed him.

What it takes to summarize A P A P is an amazing piece of literature, it captivates
the thoughts and action of a young man challenging his place in life. The author
Mr. John Updike really perpetuates the growth of a young man though his story.
Updike uses very descriptive language in the story to insure the reader understands
every detail, though sometimes those details go over there heads, which makes the
reader read again to understand. Sammy could even be seen as an everyman
because of his youth and relatable first job. The protagonist (Sammy), will
experience a coming of age situation. Being young and naive, ironically Sammy
finds out what the world has in store for him. The situation is set in motion as the
three girls walk into the store. When Sammy spots the girls he loses all sense of

In a case where a pregnant woman is involved in a crash or an accident which
leaves her brain dead, it is rare that her wishes are known involving what she would

would then be left to the family to decide. It should be the family s choice on
whether or not to keep the mother on life support or not until the baby can be

the situation worse, especially if they both do not choose the same method of action.

In general, premature babies born closer to 37 weeks will be much better off than
those born before 28 weeks (Premature Birth and Viability, 2016). The family of the
brain dead mother will also have to consider the cost of keeping her alive until the
baby can be delivered. Such costs may include mechanical ventilation and the other
forms of life support that will be used. Also, once the baby is born, the baby will
need help to breath on their own and keep them healthy to survive. The family will
also have to take those costs into consideration. Mechanical ventilation is one of the
most common forms of life support provided in the intensive care unit. The first 24
hours after admission into the ICU more than half of the patients are ventilated. Daily
incremental cost of mechanical ventilation for ICU patients is estimated at between
$600 and $1,500 per day (Mechanical Ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit, 2016).

Stone Angel Hagar as a Product of her Environment
Since the commencement of our world, there have been those such as Hitler, Einstein
and Hitchcock, whose very name stands apart from the masses; their distinct aura
symbolized something far greater than just a simple human life. Such a statement can
be applied to Hagar Shipley, the protagonist from the novel The Stone Angel by
Margaret Laurence, and hold true. Hager is a unique character, whose essence rises
above others, such that after understanding the journey of her life, her first name

To illustrate, regardless of the care that Aunty Doll provided Hagar over the years,
she thought of her as a homely woman with her sallow skin (Laurence, 17),
snubbing her merely because she was hired help. Furthermore, Hagar s God fearing
(Laurence, 16) father who pulled himself up by his boot straps (Laurence, 14),
seeded her immense dislike for human weakness. To elaborate, Hagar states, for she
was a flimsy, gutless creature (Laurence, 4) about her own ungrateful fox voiced
mother (Laurence, 4). Hagar detested her own mother because she perceived her as
weak, a characteristic her father taught her to hate. Right through the novel, we see
very little humanistic qualities of Hagar, but more accurately an immovable stone
figure filled with Currie pride.
The arrogance deeply embedded within Hagar, was not only an inheritance from
her father and the Currie past, since the values and beliefs of nineteenth century
Manawaka also fashioned her persona. During this era, the society was divided
into social classes, and due to her uncompromising pride, Hagar desired to be
situated on top. Thus Hagar was always conscious of with whom she was associated.
For this reason, Hagar despised John s association with the Tonnerre boys (Laurence,
127), some uncouth French half breeds (Laurence, 127). Additionally, it was believed
that the women of Hagar s time needed a proper education based on the curriculum of
language,

45. The Poisonwood Bible by Nathan Price Essay
The Poisonwood Bible is a book about a man named Nathan Price who takes his
wife and four daughters on a mission into the Congo. All of their ups and downs are
documented throughout the story. This novel was written by Barbara Kingsolver in
1998. This story was inspired from her own personal trip that her father took her on,
to the Congo, where they lived without and water, electricity, and many other
necessities. During the time period that this book was being written, a lot of feminist
and post colonial literature was being acknowledged. Feminist literature is both
nonfiction and fiction that supports women by defending political, economic and
social rights for women. Many works of feminist literature depict strong willed
women who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[...] It s hard to say which is worse, seeing it run out and waste the water, or seeing
it hold in and wreck the shoes (56). This goes to show how sexist Nathan can truly
be. All of these examples show the way that women look at men and that the
women are noticing that they are being treated wrong. If it were in the perspective
of Nathan, or any other man, he would see absolutely nothing wrong in the acts
downgrading women. All throughout the book, many of the women are displayed
as very hardworking figures who can get by absolutely fine without a man around,
which was a main goal in feminist literature. In the story, Leah says, Congolese
men didn t treat their own wives and daughters as if they were very sensible or
important. Though as far as I could see the wives and daughters did just about all the
work (229). This is a way that Kingsolver depicts women as the harder working
figures, because all throughout the book, the men do almost nothing and the women
do everything. After Orleanna and the daughters have all left and decided to never
come back, Leah says, With no men around, everyone was surprisingly lighthearted
(390). This is her way of saying that now that they were finally away from Nathan,
they finally felt free and happy. These examples show how little the men did, and
how the women could get along just fine without them in their lives. Another feminist
writing characteristic conveyed throughout the story is the act

Eugene B. Sledge, With The Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa, (Novato,
California: Presidio Press, 1981)
With The Old Breed is an amazing narrative about the triumphs and defeats of the
Kilo Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines in which Private First Class (PFC)
Eugene B. Sledge is apart of while on the islands of Peleliu and Okinawa during
World War II. Both of these battles were known for their bloody and brutal fights.
Sledge gives incredible descriptions of his personal experiences dealing with the
climate and conditions of which he and his unit dealt with along with describing in
great detail the actions of the Marines as they fought the Japanese.

The battle for Okinawa was the ultimate test of the fortitude of men in combat. Their
resolve was tested daily as the fight consumed men and energy at a rate never
experienced in fighting in the Pacific. For the infantry units, the losses were hard
to comprehend, when compared to what are considered heavy losses by today s
standards. Sledge describes the challenges of climate as the Marines deal with
cold, rain and heat, all the while engaging the enemy in fierce combat. The
sustained exposure to the stresses of combat, push the men to their limits and
beyond as they fight for control of the island. Almost when he thinks he can t take
anymore fighting or any more deaths of his friends. They get news on June 21st
1945 that the island is finally secured and they will soon be leaving the island. You
can tell this immediately gives hope and reassures Sledge that he wont lose it
psychologically like he had seen happen to many of his fellow comrades. Sledge
stops and breathes for a moment and eats some fresh fruit, smokes his pipe and looks
out over the beautiful open sea.
Throughout all the turmoil that Sledge went through during the war, he was able to
keep his sanity along with a compassionate optimism for humanity and that to me
tells you that he truly was a great Marine.

47. The Origin And Discoveries Of Electricity And Magnetism
This paper is mainly about the origin and discoveries of electricity and magnetism. It
is solely a summary of two natural phenomenon which have changed everything
about our way of life and has ushered us into a remarkable new age.
Firstly and most importantly, it is about the underlying idea of how magnetism and
electricity have come about, also it outlines and maps out the development and
discoveries of sources of electricity and magnetism by many inventors and the latter
discoveries of mega production.
When I was a little boy, I used to wonder what causes lightning and thunder. When
rain comes, I sometimes see intermittent lightning for a while before you can hear
the sound of a spark which is like two short circuited power cables.
At school, we all learnt about matter, which consists of atoms and molecules and
every atom has a nucleus and electron(s), inside the nucleus contains an equal
number of protons and neutrons. The electrons revolve round the nucleus of the
atom in order to keep it stable. Protons are positively charged particles, neutrons are
neutral and electrons are negative charge particles. The nucleus is surrounded by
shells; these are simply orbitals in which an electron(s) can be found. The number of
orbitals depends on how many electrons the atom has. The electrons which are in the
outer most orbitals have a tendency of being lost or shared by another atom in order
to create a more stable configuration.

Hamlet Oedipus Rex
In Shakespeare s Hamlet and Sophocles Oedipus Rex, there is a seemingly close
common relationship shown between the two plays regarding mainly the community
and era in which they took place in. As well as different scenes throughout both
stories which show very similar ideas from the writers such as, murder being the
common theme in both plays. One example comes from the story, Oedipus the King,
and it is that there is a direct relationship between the state of the state and the state
of their kings. There is also a close bond between the two plays where Oedipus
armed entrance into the bedroom in which Jocasta, his wife, has committed suicide
and was found hung there, and how the two plays relate is where in Hamlet, there
was a confrontation of Gertrude in her bedroom to. Both of these well known
classic plays share an emphasis in a somewhat sad irony throughout a chain of
events that had led up to the ritual of catharsis. However, though both plays have
similar plots in some aspects, the idea in Hamlet creates a much more difficult, as
well as complicated character than that of the classic Greek tragedy play of Oedipus
the King. The two plays have many series of unfortunate events that presents itself to
the reader throughout the play for each of the protagonists. Both Sophocles Oedipus
Rex and Shakespeare s Hamlet deals with the acts of murder and betrayal in different
ways in order to

the world, the computer has changed everything. (Mark Katz, 2010)
It is true the computer has converted everything into digital. Digital technology has
also changed the ways of sound and voice recording. It has gradually led to the
changes not only in the production of sound but also in the views of society, precisely
consumers and producers. Since the 70 s, the computer, music and audio industries

copyrights to the producers and fans could only buy pre recorded music with labels.
However, the new digital music industry has now the abundance of obstacles for
artists and music fans. With the launch of streaming services for high speed Net
access in the smart phones and tablets, the only remaining piece of the old industry
s music network is AM/FM radio in cars but sooner or later, this final change will
also make it collapsed.
The Role of Digital Technology in Contemporary Era * Consumers Views on
Digital Technology Over two decades, digital technology introduced by the
computer industry has made outside influences on recording practice changed
drastically. The Internet also provided a new way to distribute music with new
formats such as mp3, mpeg, and wav; and this led to the rise of the P2P (peer to
peer) file sharing technology. According to Persson (2006), music consumers are
not only the major supporters of recordings, but also of other technical products,
supporting changes in playback equipment and home recording technologies. Music
fans do not need labels, retail stores and media outlets any more, to listen to pre
recorded music before buying it. Public has access to all music and makes their own
decisions to select and buy the songs they like. Therefore, more people are now

50. Why Does Shakespeare Use Animals In Macbeth
Shakespeare is known for his remarkable plays. Many of which are considered to
be tragedies. A tragic play is designed to generate worry and tension in audience
members. Shakespeare provokes this fear by using dramatic irony or clues to
enhance the audience s experience. This sort of writing is what helps maintain
tension throughout his plays. The use of dramatic irony can be seen in many of
Shakespeare s plays, especially throughout Macbeth. In this tragedy, Shakespeare
uses animals to symbolise the betrayal and malicious behavior seen in the characters
of Macbeth. This gives the audience another perspective on how evil corrupts the
world around it. When Macbeth acted in a malicious way the environment around
him was affected, such as when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many female animals have a sense of protection over their babes. While some
would leave behind an unhealthy or injured babe for the sake of the pack, it is
nearly never heard of for a mama to eat her offspring. In Macbeth, the malicious
behavior seen throughout the play affected even the truest of nature. It is a natural
instinct for a mom to protect, but when a mother pig, without a second thought, eats
her young it can leave an uneasy feeling. Shakespeare intended for this scene to
indicate to the audience the loss of humanity in Macbeth, himself. The idea of a mom
betraying her instincts and acting in a cruel and harmful way more deeply expresses
how far Macbeth is willing to go to achieve his personal desire. After this point,
Macbeth is only viewed as a person without any humanity, only destructive ambition.
Shakespeare is willing to pulling at the audience s hearts to drive home the corrupted
path Macbeth has taken, while continuing to keep the audience in a state of
fearfulness. Shakespeare does this so the audience can have another perspective on
the extreme actions Macbeth has taken and the repercussions it has on the
surrounding environment. (Shakespeare,
51. A Psychodynamic Treatment Approach Essay
Susanna would benefit most from a psychodynamic treatment approach, with a
specific emphasis on clarification, confrontation, and interpretation/transference
interpretation. As highlighted by McWilliams (1999), recurrent themes emerge
within the therapy which constitute the client s internal and external world. With this
in mind, Susanna s internal object relations would undoubtedly unfold in the
relationship with the therapist. As Susanna evidences a lack of insight, it will be the
therapist s responsibility to clarify Susanna s experiences for her. In this view,
clarification refers to the reformulation of the patient s verbalizations to convey a
more coherent view of what is being communicated. The therapist may want to clarify
what it was like in Susanna s household growing up, and gather further information
on Susanna s romantic relationships. Clarifying sentiments might include you stated
that at times you felt loved by your mother, and hated at other times, but overall do
you feel that your mother loves you? While this technique alone will not lead to
therapeutic change, it will be essential for helping Susanna develop a rapport with the
therapist, and establishing a therapeutic alliance. As borderline pathology is
characterized by negative affects, and impulsive, dangerous behavior, the therapist s
ability to keep Susanna in treatment will be essential. The therapist can do this by
presenting him/herself non judgmentally, as well showing Susanna that s/he is
52. Anne Bradstreet Beliefs
The God that holds you over the pit of hell... he looks upon you as worthy of nothing
else, but to be cast into the fire... (p.124). Jonathan Edwards made this statement in
1741, about 100 years after Anne Bradstreet, the first Puritan woman to write poetry,
published the poem, To my Dear and Loving Husband . Edwards and Bradstreet both
wrote for the Puritan community about their religion, making an impact on the world
in different ways. Bradstreet and Edwards both have religious views and used their
different styles and personalities to make their own mark on the colony. Although

Edwards has a bit of an over dramatic personality by restating the same things over
again but rewording what he has said so that people will understand the concept of
what he is meaning. He tends to stretch the truth from bible stories and uses
descriptive and dramatic words to draw a picture for his listeners/readers, and to
give them something to be fearful of. In one of Edward most popular sermons he
read; You have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince;
and yet it is nothing but his hand that hold you from falling into the fire every
movement, (p.125). This demonstrates the pictures and the fear Edwards is pointing
out to his audience. In contrast, Anne Bradstreet is very straight to the point and
expressed emotion towards what she is writing without being over dramatic.
Bradstreet wants her readers to understand with love and kindness that God is good
and that following his believes is the right path. In the poem To my Dear and
Loving Husband Bradstreet writes, My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
/ Nor ought but love from thee give recompense (line 7 9) In Bradstreet s poem, she
shows kindness and love and true trust in God s goodness, however Edwards does
not manage to do the same in his sermons. Edwards preaches about a God who is
waiting to send you to the fires of hell, so you d better choose to follows God s
53. Laughter In Russ s Blues By Willy Russell
Laughter is a dominant emotional response because of reasons such as the brawling
that Russ is provoked into. He does outrageous things such as threatening a minister
and causing him to fall and hurt himself. There are also silly arguments that provoke
laughter that happen throughout the play, such as one about what the capitals are of
different countries. Lastly, in the second act all the characters start talking/yelling at
once so that they just create useless noise, and even when at first politeness is taken
to an extreme, nothing gets done in the meeting of the couples.
This play fits into high comedy because it is constrained by social expectations, and
has important social commentary on racial divides and racism today versus in the past.

My family is my strength and my weakness , Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says this
because family is a huge part of life and it can always be difficult, but can also be
wonderful at times. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a short story
wonderfully written by F. Scott Fitzgerald about the complicated life of an old kid
named Benjamin Button. Benjamin dealt with a lot of hardships throughout his
tough life mainly because he had an extremely rare situation where he aged
backward. Benjamin s familywas very tough on him because he was not a normal
case but at the end they always stuck with him. Through the use of symbolism,

Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the theme of family is always the number one priority
no matter what the circumstances are by using symbolism. One example of how
he portrayed symbolism was when Roger Button goes shopping for clothing for
his son. He is having a lot of trouble finding clothes for a 70 year old man because
he is looking in the boy s section for his newborn son who is actually old.
Benjamin s father ends up buying him an extremely fancy dress suit with dotted
socks, pink pants, and a belted blouse with a wide white collar. This fancy dress suit
symbolizes that Roger wanted him to be an identity that he really wasn t. His father
was trying to make his son a young man that he wasn t and it shows that it
symbolizes the family s wealth because it was an extremely fancy suit. Although
Roger wished he could put his newborn child in a blanket instead of going to buy
actual clothing he dealt with the situation and bought him a dress suit, which showed
his care for Benjamin, which portrayed the theme of
55. Essay About Peace In Cologeria
Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may
come as a surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced in 1998. The FARC,
having reached its peak during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against
the state. The push for peace came at the behest of the citizenry rather than the state.
In a strong display of unity, 10 million Colombians voted to for the Mandate of
Peace in October of 1997 in a popular vote. Thus the governmentunder the Pastrana
administration initiated peace negotiations amidst a brutal warwith the FARC.

Through the public hearings, 25,000 delegates participated in presenting various
proposals for peace. This process was also unique in that various international actors,
including European, Latin American, and Canadian governments as well as
representatives from the United Nations, participated either directly or indirectly.
U.S. support for the negotiations was weakened, however, by the fact that the FARC
had recently abducted and killed three American activists. This had the effect of
weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun.
The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics,
focusing on 12 main issues and 48 sub issues. These issues included: human rights,
agrarian policy (the distribution of lands bought with drug money and the substitution
of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision of the economic and social
development model, reform of the Justice system and the state, accords on
International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the redefinition of the peace time role of the
armed forces, and international agreements and the democratic mechanisms
legitimizing these. Efforts were made on behalf of both parties to build confidence.
Among these efforts was the initiation of ceasefires during Christmas and the New
Year in 1999/2000. It is important to note that, though each side was continuing in the
peace process, there was no overarching

My Abuela, Nory
Let me tell you about wonderful women that not only raised me but my mother.
This person is someone I admire and hope to be like her someday. My Abuela, Nory
touched the heart and soul of everyone that met her, but none more so than me. She
has always been there for me and my family. My Abuela has taught me many
valuable things in life and hopefully, she will continue to do that. Nory is important
to me because she knows how to cook, she knows how to have fun, and she s the
most confident person I have ever seen.
First of all, Nory is an exceptional chef. We all know how amazing a grandma can
cook especially if she s Hispanic. They know the recipes from the old world and
can recreate them perfectly. When we try to copy their masterpieces we find that
we still fall short. No one can measure up to my grandma. This 5 foot 3, 65 year old
beast of a woman can make you taste heaven in every meal that she prepares. I have
always loved baking but I found it fascinated when I would watch my grandma cook.
She always has more than two shoves one plus the rice cooker and the microwave. If
you have ever seen how busy a five star restaurant kitchen is on a weekend then I m
sure you can picture just how busy the kitchen is, except in this case its only one
master chef. Her short auburn hair is all over the place, the sweat on her face shows
just how much she has worked and you can never forget her signature mismatched

57. Papacy Crisis
During the medieval period, debates over the pope s power created significant
tension between the Papacy and Europe s kings. These tensions manifested
themselves in the Investiture Crisis of the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a
quarrel between Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII over the
appointment of bishops. This controversy came to a head when Henry used his army
to force Gregory VII out of Rome to install his anti PopeClement III. While the
Concordat of Worms resolved the crisis, the impacts of the Investiture Crisis
continued to affect the Papacy. One of the Investiture Crisis most notably facets was
its demonstration of how the Papacy could not prevent ambitious kings from trying to

While Boniface possessed greater temporal power than Gregory VII did (due to the
reforms of Innocent III), they both shared an obstinacy that alienated secular rulers,
especially on matters of lay investiture or taxation. Ambitious kings, whether or not
they made moves to keep their kingdoms hold on the Papacy, could still find ways
to subvert and control its power to their advantage. The impact of the Investiture
Crisis resonated nearly 200 years after it started, as the assumptions of Gregory VII
and Henry IV about their respective powers carried over to Boniface VIII and Philip
IV, albeit changed to fit with the evolving spiritual and temporal nature of the
