Strategic Dissection Paper on “Microsoft Corporation”
Abstract
This paper defines and exemplifies some of the strategies presented by David (2008) that are currently
being used by the Microsoft organization. This work presents different levels of strategy (corporate
and functional), some of integration and intensive strategies.
Levels of strategy
The corporate level of management consists of the chief executive officer (CEO), other senior
executives, and corporate staff. The main role of corporate level managers is to observe the
development of strategies for the whole organization. This role includes defining the goals of the
organization, determining what businesses it should be in, allocating resources among the different
businesses, formulating and implementing strategies that span ... Show more content on

Not only that, engineers typically get paid more than businesspeople (Kirkpatrick, 2008).
In early 1994, Gates received e mails from two young employees, Jay Allard and Steve Sinofsky, who
argued that Microsoft s current strategy was misguided and ignored the rapidly emerging Web. In
companies with a more hierarchical culture, such action might have been ignored, but in Microsoft,
which operates as a meritocracy in which good ideas trump hierarchical position, it produced a very
different response. Gates convened a meeting of senior executives in April 1994 and then wrote a
memo to senior executives arguing that the Internet represented a sea change in computing and that
Microsoft had to respond.
Integration strategies
Microsoft is using a forward integration strategy, which usually involves gaining ownership or
increased control over distributors or retailers. (David, 2010) Microsoft s forward integration includes
opening its own retail stores. Microsoft wants to learn firsthand about what consumers want and how
they buy. Intensive Strategies
A market penetration strategy seeks to increase market share for present products or services in
present markets through greater marketing efforts. Market penetration includes increasing the number
of salespersons, increasing advertising expenditures, offering extensive sales promotion items, or
increasing publicity efforts. (David, 2010)
Microsoft s software products include operating systems,

Danger Of Mount Everest Essay
Dangers of Mount Everest
Climbing Mount Everest is a very dangerous extreme sport because it can not only be dangerous to
yourself, but also to others. Mount Everest has a lot of dangers killing and injuring people every year.
Other climbers on the mountain can also be a danger to yourself and other climbers. If a climber ahead
of you happens to slip or fall then he could fall on you hurting the both of you. People on Everest are
tired, sick, and sore which gives them an even bigger chance of something dangerous happening.
When climbing Mount Everest there is a spot on the mountain called the death zone. The death zone is
at the 8,000 meter mark of the mountain. The wind at the death zone is at its coldest and the air is at its
thinnest. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On Mount Everest there are many crevasses opening up and closing. A crevasse is usually found under
a new snow bridge which is made of snow from previous years. They are sometimes very hard to see
and are very lethal. When you can see them and have to cross them then you have to use a ladder and
must be very careful crossing because the spikes on your shoes are slippery against the metal ladder,
and you must also use a rope for assistance.
Weather on Everest is also a big danger to consider. On the mountain wind can reach up to 100 mph or
even more. If the weather is bad on the mountain you shouldn t go out and climb again, you should
wait for safe days. The temperature on Everest can range from 10 to 25 celsius. The weather is
probably the worst physical danger o n Everest. Whenever you can you need to check what the
weather is going to be like before going back out and climbing.
Another very common danger is frostbite. Frostbite occurs when different body parts aren t warm
enough. It normally happens to hands and feet. Frostbite makes the affected area blackish blue. If the
affected body part goes too long without treatment then it might have to be

Ocean Carrier Inc. owned and operated cape size dry bulk carriers worldwide. Major Cargo type is
iron ore and coal. Vessel sizes are 80,000 DWT to 210,000 DWT. Cape size carriers travel around
Cape Horn rather than the Panama Canal due to size constraints. The cargo operations include
maintenance, repairs, insurance, supplying of lubricants, maintaining supplies and on board stores.

When the market demand for shipping capacity was high, owners would keep a vessel in operation as
long as possible. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There had been very few
scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the worldwide fleet of
capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason might be the market
demand is strong recently.
Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns.
For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would increase,
demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes.
Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size) drive
the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate).
Factor 2: World economy
The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic industries.
When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products increase thus will
result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession, the hire rate will be
lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999 because of the effect of 1998
financial crisis.
Factor 3: Age of ships
Average hire rate is influenced by the age of the ships. If a company s vessels are relatively new than
the industry average, it earned a premium in daily hire rate

Comparing A Respectable Woman And The Awakening
In the late nineteenth century, Kate Chopin published two of her controversial short stories, A
Respectable Woman and The Awakening. A Respectable Woman is about a character named Mrs.
Baroda and how she dreams of committing adultery with her husband s friend. She never takes the
leap, though. In The Awakening, a woman named Edna begins to have feelings for a man she met on
her family vacation, Robert. She realizes that she feels depressed with her husband so she moves out.
Then, she tries to get together with Robert, but he does not want to commit such heinous acts.
Eventually, she finds herself committing the act with another man to satisfy her sexual desires. In the
end, Edna finally realizes that she is lonely and no one can please her. As a female modern writer of
the late nineteenth century, Kate Chopin was harshly scrutinized and could not turn from the criticism
of her new writings from the old ways. Kate Chopin went through several tragic instances in her life.
She was five years old when she lost her father. Her grandmother died when Chopin was thirteen and
her brother during the war of typhoid fever. Unfortunately, the events that took place involved the ...

Edna was a low character, settling to find anything to fulfill a desire. In the end, she eventually figured
out that nothing would satisfy her, and she committed suicide. After The Awakening was published,
Chopin had a hard time finding publishers for her stories. Tragically, it ended her career for

Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making Us Stupid
Major Paper II:Rhetorical Analysis In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid , the main argument the
author, Nicholas Carr is trying to make is to explain how the Internet becomes our only source of
information. Carr is also trying to warn oncoming generations in how the Internet has affected our
ability to read long pieces or to be able to retain information for a long period of time. Carr provides
personal experience, imagery, and a professional analysis that is backed by research to hook the
audience in and persuade them that in today s society, the Internet is only causing problems rather than
any solutions.Throughout the article Carr provides an abundant amount of rhetorical modes by giving
examples and studies from different organizations . Carr gives an insight on the positive ways the
Internet had influenced his life.
The author s tone changes in paragraph 4 when Carr talks about how the Internet has altered his mind
by crumbling away at how much he can concrete. When Carr states For me, as for others, the Net is
becoming a universal medium in paragraph four the author provides his counter argument which is to
warn the incoming generations the dangers of the Internet before his main argument. Which is that the
Internet is making us stupid and is altering how we think, by doing this it allows Carr to spend the rest
of the article refuting his main argument.
In order to move along his argument the first thing Carr does is share a problem with the

Requirements For Commission Management And Management
3.1.1 Requirements for commission management
RBM is part of commission management and comes under the managerial responsibility of the officer
responsible for the commission. It is very important to ensure that the results based monitoring system
is based on the results model. The monitoring system must be possible to provide information all the
time on the following points:
 whether and to what extent the measure is moving towards the objective in accordance with the
results model and the underlying assumptions;
 whether the expected results as well as unexpected positive or negative results are being generated;
 what systematic management and strategic decisions can be identified for steering the measure;
 to what extent the measure contributes to achieving overarching results, and
 whether risks influence the achievement of results by the measure
3.1.2 What needs to be monitored?
Impact
Impacts describe indirect benefits of our interventions. Our programme contributes to impact. The
main purpose of impact monitoring is to prove whether our interventions are bringing and will have
potential to bring the defined changes that has been agreed on programme objective.
Impact monitoring goes beyond output and outcome monitoring, but relies to a large extent on the
information generated by output and outcome monitoring. Impact monitoring is usually not done
regularly and it can be done through surveys. These surveys can be conducted internally by project
staff or

Essay on Hit Song Science
1. What value does Hit Song Science create? If you were Mike McCready, CEO of Polyphonic, which
target market unsigned artists, producers, or record companies would you pursue? Before we analyze
the value Hit Song Science creates, we should be clearly aware of the substance of Hit Song Science.
Hit Song Science refers to comparing the mathematical characteristics of music with characteristics of
past music hits to determine a song s hit potential. From my point of view, the value Hit Song Science
creates can be classified into two aspects technology and business. On the technological level, Hit
Song Science is an advanced technology in that it mixes music and math which cannot be perceived as
relevant in a daily life. It is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Producers are in the same situation. Inside producers only receive salary plus some royalties as
compensation. While outside producers received a production fee and negotiated a royalty of 1% to
5%of the suggested retail price. Production fee varied dramatically, which means the production fee
producers received depends most on the level of the producers themselves and the level of the artists
they helped. However, they were only about 20 to 30 top producers who may receive so high
production fee that they would like to pay for Hit Song Science. Other producers with low or
relatively low production fee may not be willing to pay for Hit Song Science out of their slender
income. It makes sense that famous artists prefer top producers who can help them make a hit and in
turn, receive benefit from the hit. If artists, unsigned artists and producers only received a small
portion of income from music, the biggest winner in the process of recording activity is record
company. Managers and talent agents alone extract between 25% and 40% of a performer s income.
Record labels have the ability to pay for Hit Song Science. More importantly, they want to forecast
sales levels for the titles in their portfolios. Based on the high market size of record labels and the
necessity to forecast whether a song can become a hit via Hit Song Science due to high releasing fees,
polyphonic should pursue

Subprime Lending
Defining Subprime Lending The problem to be investigated is the effect of subprime mortgage loans
on the economy. According to Merriam Webster subprime is defined as having or being an interest rate
that is higher than a prime rate and is extended especially to low income borrowers; extending or
obtaining a subprime loan (Webster, 2012). Subprime mortgage loans are loans given to people with a
low credit score. Subprime borrowers normally don t qualify for prime loans or prime lending.
According to Jennings, the subprime mortgage market is defined to include those borrowers with a
FICO (Fair Isaac Co.) score below 570 (Jennings, 2012, p. 434).

The vast majority of subprime loans are now securitized; leading to claims that securitization
facilitates predatory lending and should actively police lenders. New standards to protect borrowers
against unfair practices were launched 1 July including requirements to ensure they are not lured into
credit contracts they cannot afford to repay. The standards include provisions to stop predatory lenders
from exploitative practices such as using household items as security for cash loans (Engel, K. amp;
McCoy, 2007).
Lender and Incentives One has to wonder, why were subprime loans pitched to consumers? They
weren t pushed for altruistic purposes; not from the kindness of the heart. The results were inevitable.
According to the readings, subprime loans ended with the same result. They were a risk for the
consumer as well as the bank backing the loan. There had to be some incentive for the banks; some
benefit that is reaped. In this case, it was a monetary benefit.
Yield spread premiums is what lenders call them. Consumer groups call them legal kickbacks. YSPs
are the cash that mortgage brokers or lenders get for steering a borrower into a home loan with a
higher interest rate (Center for Responsible Lending, Yield Spread Premiums (YSPS).
However, the Federal Reserve stepped in and regulated these kickbacks.
New rules issued by the Federal Reserve Board mean that YSPs are no longer legal. The Fed rules ban
brokers and loan officers from

The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God
Our textbook Philosophy: An Introduction to the Art of Wondering, states that the teleological
argument for the existence of God is based on the apparent order and design of nature and cosmos,
and on the purposive nature of evolution (Christian, 2012, p. 611). The cosmos can be explained
currently with mathematical calculations, principles that are physical and chemical in nature, and
psychobiological processes (Christian, 2012, p. 611). Living organisms have distinctive metabolic and
life cycle rhythms.... Subatomic studies have revealed the complex configurations of energy
patterns.... Cosmic processes run through ordered sequences resembling birth, life, and death
(Christian, 2012, p. 611). Thus, the teleological case follows a path or fate, such that occurrence of life
transpired from a potential edict from some higher intelligence, namely God. ... Show more content on

Thus, there is no proof that there is only one god, instead of multiple divine beings.
If there is a God and an intelligent design of the universe, then there is no reason for the natural
disasters, illnesses, and other unexplainable events.
The universe and biological systems often display randomness.
In order to find hard data to clarify and defend the answer would be difficult, since it is hard, if not
impossible, to prove and verify that God exists. There is empirical observation, but not proven
reasoning. Significant analysis in the form of scholarly articles can be found and various thoughts for
and against the teleological argument, but not hard data. However, the teleological argument is
convincing and is probably the most popular argument in attempting to prove the existence of God.
This argument or belief has even been found to go back to the Greeks. Most religious people today use
this argument as to the existence of God. Yet, to find hard data to prove the existence of God would be
complex. We must rely on faith and commitment to our belief in

Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapter 6 Summary
Chapter 6 of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston starts out by describing how
Janie detests running the store, but also how she finds some joy in listening to the bright stories the
townsfolk have on the porch. The guys there like to tease Matt Bonner a man with an overworked
good for nothing mule. Jody, regardless of Janie s wonderment in the stories, forbids her from
hanginging out with the trashy people out on the porch. Because of the men who constantly are
entranced by Janie s hair, Jody commands her to wear a head rag around her head due to his
overgrown jealousy. One day Matt Bonner s mule runs away and ends up outside of the store, where
some townsmen are torturing it for their own amusement. Janie does not like this and mutters her
disapproval, Jody hears her and decides to buy the mule for five dollars so it can finally be at peace.
After the mule finally dies, Jody has a mock funeral which turns into a town wide gathering, none of
which Janie is allowed to attend to. Later on at the store, Janie and Jody get into an argument where
she tells him that he is no fun, and he tells her that he is just trying to be responsible. As time goes on
the indignation that Janie holds for Jody only grows stronger. One day, Jody slaps Janie after seven
years of having met each other after a treacherous dinner. Later that same day, Mrs. Robbins begs
Jody for a little meat for her family which Jody spares. The men on the porch talk crudely about the

The Stolen Bacillus by H.G. Wells Essay
The Stolen Bacillus by H.G. Wells
This is a story set in the 19th century people had dress codes which reflected your status in society.
The dress code was formal and quite severe it was almost as if the longer your top hat the higher up
the rank you are in importance in society. In this story we meet a man who wants to help the society
and quality of living whereas the other wants to destroy order as he is what s known as an anarchist.
This is someone who is feels that people should be responsible for there own actions and decisions
meaning they govern their own lives. In the 19th century anarchists were seen as political agitators
and sometimes violent. As in this story where we will see a man desperate and willing to go to ...

The anarchist is very absurd into thinking that by drinking the potion that he would be able to infect
the whole population in the story it says, He went walking down Waterloo Bridge jostling as many
people as possible trying to infect them . The real blow must have come to the anarchist when he
realises that that was the wrong phial. We know that this is true as the scientist says, it is a phial which
turns things blue so that is the only thing he will achieve .
The two characters in the story who are set on big ideas are the
Scientist and the anarchist. The scientist is pompous and idealistic and likes the sound of his own
voice, as he kept on talking about the bacillus. The anarchist is high flown and self important, there is
a bit of self pity and neglect but then again he is pathetic and can t seek attention in any other way.
There is definitely an element of frustration in his life as no one listens to his ideas or what he has to
say this is partly the reason why he wants to cause chaos with the stolen bacillus. We know this as it
says, The world shall hear of him at last. All those people who laughed neglected him and preferred
other people to him will consider him now .
The characters in the story who show reality are the wife of the scientist and the cabbies.
The wife is very down to earth she is more concerned about the way

The Liberation Of Women During The 18th And The 19th Century
Uprising of Women in Psychology Sydney Alan Brackin University of Montevallo Abstract This paper
shows the liberation of women in the 18th and the 19th Century, showing the different waves of
feminist in psychology. It s important to remember the gradual changes and actions displayed. I
choose to finalize this paper with Christine Ladd Franklin. She was the first women to complete the
necessary requirements for a PhD. Her contributions to mathematics and psychology paved the way
for other women to succeed. Uprising of Women in Psychology Women as Other Throughout history
women have not been given proper recognition for their insight in the field of psychology. They were
simply labeled as Other. Simone de Beauvoir, philosopher examines the concepts of woman and in
relation to the larger concepts of humanity. She concludes that women s status is not simply a matter
of definition, but a fundamental way of thinking that has political consequences. What is a Woman?
This question may seem to be rudimentary, but when thought about women are the foundation for life.
Women are more than their uterus, or an imperfect man. It was believed that women were made from
man s image, Adam and Eve. This alone gives rise to men and lessens women as an individual. Man
cannot think of himself without the other. Without women there would be no man. In the most
primitive societies there is duality between the self and the other. These were not

Emergent technology. The National Education Technology Plan 2010, issued by the United States
Department of Education, asserted the lives of today s students are occupied with technology that
mobilizes 24 hour, 7 day a week access to information and resources, facilitates creation of sharable
multimedia, and permits participation in learning and collaborating with people worldwide. Student
opportunities are without limits and offer immediate feedback. Hence, technology integration has
profoundly altered the pedagogical practices of the classroom (Shieh, 2012). Given this challenge, the
U.S. Dept. of Education (2010) contended that there is a necessity to leverage progressive technology
in order to create engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror
students daily lives and the reality of their futures (p. x). Smith and Evans (2010) explained how
technology empowers students to pursue opportunities to learn on their own. Students desire to
interact and acquire knowledge from their own personalized network of experts, utilizing modern
communication and collaboration tools that are not bound by time and place.

English Reflection
In my previous English courses, I had no knowledge of writing an essay, or even a proper sentence.
Writing did not seem like anything important in my life, or that it would affect me anyway in the
future. I had despised my own writing and loathed having to write essays for any of my classes. When
I had enrolled in Composition I, I had no idea what I was going to do to pass. However, in class, we
had done collaborative work, which had helped me progress myself. Collaborative work had consisted
of multiple students helping each other, sharing ideas, and peer reviews. This was a change of pace for
me since I had not done that before. In previous classes, I had done individual work, which was solely
myself correcting and working on my work. Between collaborative work and individual work, I
enjoyed working with partners and sharing each other s experiences to benefit ourselves. Over this
class I have developed my writing skills, learned from my previous mistakes, and understood the
writing process.
To begin with, before taking this class I would have grammar errors, low level word choices, sentence
fragments, contractions, and no sentence variety. The grammar in my essays would be something that
I had never worked on or learned from. My word choices were that of a middle schooler and would
sound childish at times. I had never taken the time to learn about the sentence variety and
combinations that were possible. My knowledge of sentence variety was limited to only compound

What Significant Moment Has Defined Me Analysis
What significant moment has defined me? Well, I believe that there were instances that may be
significant in my life but it didn t define me or vice versa. There were also instances where it was
neither significant nor it defined me as an individual. These realizations led me to think, Are there any
instances when it was both significant and at the same time it also defined me? Yes, indeed, there have
been multiple instances/moments that formed a big picture. From a very young age, leading a group of
people wasn t exactly my best forte. I was always the one being led instead of leading, I was always

and told me that she was glad that I was back and I inspired her to become fully active in club. I never

The Importance Of My Personal Identity
What is your identity? People think they know someone s identity by the external factors, but there are
internal factors that they don t know about the person. For example, people might think people are
happy, but deep down they might be sad and they don t want nobody to find out. I define myself as a
catholic heterosexual 15 year old Latina. My identity is very different than what others think of me. I
think my real identity is awesome, some people think that because I am a teenager I m into
parties, relationships, drugs and also how I m a teenager, I don t like kid shows or playing with my little
cousins also they think I don t do kid stuff anymore. My real identity is very different from the other
teenagers around me. I love to play with my niece bella and my cousins. I love spending time with my
family like if I would have to choose between going with my friends to the movies or my family I
would choose my family 1000times. When my family and I go to beautiful places I m always taking
pictures of nature, what going on during the events. Nature is one of my favorite things because there
are many beautiful things to admire. Like when I go to the beach I like to stare at the waves and the
sea shells come in and leave. Another thing I like is summer because there are so many things you can
do than in the winter or any other season. Summer is my favorite because we go to so many places and
parties also you re never home which means you ll rarely get bored. It also means you get to go on
vacation. Art is something I like because it s a way I can express myself, I love to draw and paint
another thing I like to do is observe art because I can imagine different things based on the art. Social
media like Snapchat, instagram, Facebook etc are amazing because you re able to see what other
people are going also a magnificent way of communicating with family and friends far far away. I

Student Loan Programs
Student Loan Programs
The beginning of a college education is an eventful and exciting chapter for America s youth.
Beginning college is also when responsibilities begin to kick in as well. Students must plan ahead how
they intend to finance their education during their time at college and after completing their academic
careers. Almost seventy percent of college students nationwide take out loans to help finance their
education. Like any other loan, student loans must be paid off in a timely manner to avoid hurting
personal credit for future investments. The government has various student loan programs to assist
students with not only paying for college, but also with paying off these loans after college. The most

It may feel like free money to the pockets when receiving the refund checks, but all of it needs to be
paid back at a point. This is a common mistake made by students during their college careers.
Managing finances when in school is a crucial part of building a credit history because student loans
tend to be the first type of credit for those in college. It is also the first type of real debt incurred by
many. Late loan payments seriously harm credit records and ruin a credit history for years. This is why
paying off these loans is the safest way to go when building a positive credit history. Late payments
that add up often pose as obstacles when taking out auto loans and mortgages as well. This is only fair,
because if a student fails to carry out the responsibility of paying back a student loan, then they are not
proven responsible when it comes to other types of credit either. (smartmoney.com) Late loan
payments indeed take a toll on an individual s credit history. When a loan payment has not been made
for two hundred seventy days after it was due, that student loan is considered to be in default. The
defaulted loan is turned over to a collection agency, and the government notifies every credit bureau.
This information remains on an individual s credit report for seven years. Not paying the defaulted
loan as soon as possible means having federal income tax refunds withheld and added to

Battle Of Palmito Ranch Thesis
Have you ever been so passionate about something in life that no matter what, you didn t want to see it
end? I think that Commander Theodore H. Barrett had that same desire. In May of 1865, Commander
Theodore H. Barnett led troops into what is known as the last battle of the Civil War. The Battle of
Palmito Ranch did not impact the outcome of the Civil War; but it still made history. This battle was
led by a man who wasn t ready to see the Civil War end, a man who was passionate about what he was
fighting for. The Battle of Palmito Ranch was the last land action battle of the Civil War. Both the
Union and Confederate forces were aware of the surrender of Robert E. Lee, just a few weeks before.
On May 1, 1865 there was a steamer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the battle is being fought, ground is taken and ground is taken away. Many times in a battle each
side feels like they have the upper hand. This battle was no different from the rest of them.
Commander Theodore H. Barrett thought he had the upper hand many times. Many people claimed he
went into to this battle to see more action before the war ended. Despite the war coming to an obvious
end, he ordered for his troops to head out to Brownsville, Texas. He started The Battle of Palmito
Ranch with the upper hand, planning a surprise attack. The Confederates across the border gave away
their position, so Commander Barrett had no other choice than to retreat. The Union s first expedition
was successful. They got a few prisoners and some supplies, but they did not achieve the desire of
surprise. Later in the afternoon the Confederate forces counterattacked with less than 100 cavalry.
That drove the Union back into White s Ranch, where the fighting stop for the night. The
Confederates and the Union sent for reinforcements. The Union started to move westward with
skirmishes along the way. Where the Commander of the Union attacked and then flanked them.

Pros And Cons Of Spirit Family Support Shelter
DISCUSSION A. Does Spirit Family Support Shelter constitute as a dwelling under the Fair Housing
Act (FHA)? The first issue is whether Spirit Family Support Shelter qualifies as a dwelling under the
Fair Housing Act. Under the FHA, a dwelling is any building, structure, or portion thereof, for
purposes of occupancy, as a residence by one or more families, and any vacant land offered for sale or
lease for the construction, or location of any such building, structure, or portion thereof. Fair Housing
Act of 1968, § 807(a), 42 U.S.C.A. § 3602(b). In practice, several Third Circuit Courts have
demarcated residence to mean a temporary or permanent dwelling place, abode, or habitation that one
intends to return to, as opposed to a place temporary sojourn or transient visit. Defiore v. City Rescue

Eponine Sacrifice Essay
Kill em with Kindness
If you don t sacrifice for what you want, what you want becomes a sacrifice. (Unkown) Sacrifice was
not a strange action to these characters. The entire novel was based on the sacrifices each individual
made throughout for their own future as well as that of the country. While Eponine made one of the
most selfless moves of the movie, it can easily overshadow those of other characters, which were
many. Looking further than Eponine s actions, some of the most sacrificial and resilient moments
came from Jean Valjean, Fantine, Javert, and Marius.
From the moment he meets her, Jean Valjean is ready to sacrifice everything for Cosette; whom he
cares after as if she were his own daughter. From the moment he escapes prison to find her to the
moment he risks his life at the barricade to save the love of her life he lives selflessly. He went to the

find answers. It was impossible for him to insult his grandfather, and it was equally impossible for him

The Christmas Holiday From The Federal Calendar
Omitting the Christmas Holiday from the Federal Calendar
The establishment of a legal holiday is best defined as a day where there are no courts, labor, and is a
day of joy and rest. While there should be a separation of church and state, Christmas is considered a
legal holiday and one needs to question the validity of establishing this day as a legal holiday when
one looks at the concept of separation of church and state and considering the diversity we face in
today s modern society.
Christmas in in fact defined as a Holyday. This should not be considered a legal holiday due to the fact
that it is Christian based and we do not have legal holidays that recognize other religions. The United
States does not have a recognized national religion, so Christmas should be separated from legally
recognized holidays.
In the American Law Register the opening paragraph gives an interesting point of view on this matter.
Notwithstanding the distinction drawn by the great American Lexicographer, between a holiday and a
holy day, where by the latter should be used as the proper term for a religious festival, while the
former should rather denote a day of exemption for labor and of amusement, joy and gaiety, the
common impression seems to liken both the holiday and the holyday to the great weekly day of rest
and legal inaction? (Uhle 137)
With cultural diversity being what it is today, and the many different religious traditions that comes of
this, establishing a holyday as a legal

A Brief Note On The Uk Market Industry
Oligopoly in UK supermarket industry
The main factor in an oligopolistic market is that there are only a few dominant competitors in the
marketplace. According to Anderton (2008: 322), An oligopolistic market is one where a small
number of interdependent firms compete with each other . For this assignment I ve chosen to focus on
the UK super market industry as there is clear evidence that the UK supermarket sector is increasingly
dominated by four main firms. These are Tesco s, Sainsbury s Asda and Morrison s.
Firstly I will look into the four main firms. Lets start with Tesco s the front leader in market shares for
the UK supermarket industry. Tesco s is a multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer
headquartered in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An illustrating example of the big chains competing with each other is Brand Match . This idea,
developed by Sainsbury s in an effort to compete with Asda s low and very competitive prices, was
replicated in all the other major supermarkets after it was noticed and obvious that this was a
successful way to attract customers. Morrison s, taking the concept substantially further, launched a
Match and More card, offering to credit the difference in points if you would have paid less for your
shopping at Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury s or Asda.
A solution, universally favored by each, to distinguish themselves from one another and thus attempt
to assert a level of dominance within the marketplace, has been the development of their own
premium range of food. A brand within a brand. This is seen, with obvious success, in Sainsbury s
Taste the Difference . The Taste the Difference range is competing very well with even the higher end
companies like Waitrose and Marks Spencer s. To go one step further each supermarket also has a
more economic range, marketed towards the thrifty shopper. Once again using Sainsbury s as an
example we can see that the value brand within a brand would be the Sainsbury s Basics which
successfully competes with discount chains such as Aldi and Lidl. Many of the products in both the
higher end and more value targeted end of each range from all

Have you ever taken a psychological test? Psychological tests are used to measure one s attributes.
According to the article, How is a Psychological Assessment Used, psychological testing is done to
help a psychologist, better understand an individual and provide valuable insights into the individual s
behavior, skills, thoughts and personality. An example of a psychological test is, the Thematic
Apperception Test (TAT) which evaluates thoughts, attitudes, and responses to questionable test
materials. The TAT and its pictures evolved during the 1930s and early 1940s. The pictures used were
in a constant state of flux with additions, deletions, and modifications (Morgan, W. G. 2002). The
Thematic Apperception Test is an individual assessment, known as the picture interpretation
technique. Whereas, the test taker is shown pictures and asked to tell a story about the pictures. The
pictures used for this psychological test include cards which are, blank, male figures, female,
ambiguous gender, and children. Most practitioners choose a set of approximately ten cards, either
using cards that they feel are generally useful, or that they believe will encourage the subject s
expression of emotional conflicts relevant to their specific history and situation (Cramer, P. 2004). The
assessment for TAT can be used to; reveal motivations, and understanding of one s personality through
projecting themselves onto the pictures and how they are feeling. Thus, each answer the subject

The Impact Of Urban Population And The Current Causes...
The last century has been characterized by the rapid growth of the urban areas which is likely to be
one of the milestones in the current ages. Also known as the urbanization, this process, is defined by
the unprecedented rural population shift to the cities which stems from the Modern period as a result
of the Industrial Revolution. However, nowadays, the key aspect is the universal nature of such, issue t
has an effect on an exceptional transformation on a global scale causing a drastic impact on the social,
economic, cultural and political patterns. It is a widely held the opinion that one of the main
challenges of this century is to clarify the origin and identify which are the sociodemographic factor
that negatively impact on the urban population and the current causes social segregation. Regarding
the recent academic research in human geography field, can be possible to associate this social
segregation with the gentrification . Thus, the gentrification can be defined as the dynamic process
that displaces the local and low income population of the district due to the urban revitalization of the
area. Exploration of the social segregation in the Australian context (Melbourne and Sydney), might
be the main purpose of this research. The analysis of the gentrification process is studied in order to
find out what are the negative impacts on the population. Therefore, the research question might focus
on the issue of the social transformation. Thus, the findings can

Analysis Of Frost s Poem Frost
This was not a coincidence. The irony utilized by Frost clearly contributes to the overall theme of
design governing situations on earth. Frost also utilizes tone to emphasize the horrific nature of the
scene while speaking in a seemingly light manner. Frost s diction can be divided into two major
categories: whimsical and light, and dark. This contrast contributes to the irony of the scene as well.
Specific word choices in the octave show this clearly. Frost employs light, pleasant, and whimsical
words like dimpled, fat, snow drop, froth, and kite (7). These seem to set a tone reminiscent of a
nursery rhyme; however, these are combined with other words that have dark and evil connotations.
These include rigid, death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator begins to analyze and question the scene that he is viewing, and begins to relate it to
concepts like fate, design and supernatural control. The tone of the sestet can be identified through the
questions the narrator asks. The first question is of annoyance and slight confusion. The flower is the
subject of this confusion. As a heal all, its proper color is blue, and should not have been white. This is
the first clue that suggests the involvement of something other than random chance. The blue had been
cast aside and forgotten, and the narrator views the flower as innocent. It had been implicated in such
an awful event by no fault of its own. This raises the question of whose fault it actually was. The next
seems harsh and sinister, questioning what force or chance brought the spider to the top of the flower,
and then why the moth flew straight into its grasps. Height normally shows superiority, but in this
context, it is negative. The evil spider is high up on a mutated flower, in the perfect place at the perfect
time to catch dinner. It seems hard to believe that random chance brought the spider to that particular
flower. The next part of the question concerns the moth and what force caused it to come into contact
with the spider and flower. The identical color of the flower, moth, and spider further contributes
evidence to the conclusion that this situation

Freewill Essay
Freewill
Many have wondered whether free will exists or not. Some argue yes, some argue no. For now, I will
say no. I will begin my argument with a scenario. Say a man has an enemy that he hates very strongly.
One day this guy makes a conscious decision to kill his enemy. He calculates every move he needs to
make to kill his enemy and succeeds in doing so. Clearly, this man is guilty of murder. The question is,
should blame fall on this man for killing another?
Currently, all societies in the world are built around some moral basis that holds a person responsible
for their actions. A determinist, however, would disagree and say that people are not free, and
therefore are not at fault for their actions. Human acts are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are certain variables, like baking a cake, which are accounted for such as being late, the rush it
gives, or just because the wind feels good.
Whatever the case may be, the act is caused. In the eyes of a determinist, caused acts have only one
option. If there is only one option, then there is no freedom. So, the question arises, are all acts
caused? To answer this question we must first look at the human brain and mind. Historically, when
we talk about human acts we seem to be able to predict why a human acted the way they did. For
example, while watching something like Montel, the host attempts to reason why a person s problem
occurred. The audience then makes suggestions on how to remedy the situation. If the topic is about
relationships, then the show leads to questions about relationships and why they occur. Just about
every time a guest asks a question about an abusive boyfriend, the host asks what their family life was
like. The overwhelming response is that people who enter into abusive relationships had abusive
families. If we relate this back to the human brain and say an abusive family is a variable for an
abusive boyfriend, we find that this act can be predicted.
The human mind/brain appears to be broken into two parts. The first we will call instinct. The human
instinct consists of all things that are embedded in the human mind for survival, like the need

Analysis Of Alain De Boordon s The Consolations Of Philosophy
What is popular is not inherently true. That is what Alain De Botton is trying to show his readers
through his work, The Consolations of Philosophy. While there are many beliefs that are well known
and shared amongst a vast community, they can always be questioned, and if they can be questioned,
there may be an exception. De Botton states that the reason people do not question our societies
beliefs and values is fear of rejection by one s peers and the community as a whole; just as Socrates
was. However, some things that we, as a community, hold to be true are true and should not be
questioned, at times it is more important to stick to one s moral compass rather than question a
societies laws. Not wanting to be alienated from society is something we fear as individuals because
many people do not want to live their lives alone, being a part of a community can be important to
some people and while that can be questioned, it does not mean it is a bad thing. Being able to
question society allows for one to think for themselves and find their own beliefs rather than accepting
the ones from the environment they were born into. Today, the world is so diverse, with a range of
different and even contradictory beliefs on what is true, questioning them is The main argument
presented in De Botton s reading is that what is popular is not always true. Every society has a set of
beliefs they hold to be true and important. People will act according to these beliefs because it is
shown to them throughout their lives that this is the correct way to behave; going against the status
quo can result in unpopularity (De Botton, 2000, p9). The fear of rejection and unpopularity is strong
within each society, most individuals believe that it is important to be apart of a community, being
exiled from one would result in loneliness and most societal conventions, like marriage, revolve
around not being alone. Society tends to put pressure on people to marry, people who do not can be
seen as deficient and not to create one s own family can be a great source of anxiety for some
(Blackmore, 2005, p327), it is seen as important to not be alone in one s life. Even De Botton states,

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Analysis
Prions are infectious protein agents that cause aggregation of the peptide PrPC and form large amyloid
fibrils. These fibrils resist proteoysis and can have a detrimental effect of the functionality of cells and
ultimately cause their death. (3). Misfolded PrPC will form stable aggregates denoted as PrPSc. PrPC
is a soluble protein that is present in all organism whose function is still not totally clear (3). When
PrPc converts to PrPSc there is an increase in the number of β sheets in the protein, which can allow
for interaction and stacking of other misfolded PrPSc proteins, causing an amyloid fibre to form (5).
One of the most relevant prions with regards to human health is Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD).CJD

British Colonization
The main notable development that the British Empire brought to India during their colonisation was
the railways, otherwise known as Railroads of the Raj . First proposed in 1846 by Thomas
Williamson, the revenue commissioner of Bombay, who stated that Commercially, it would be best for
the cotton of Berar while also allowing an immediate direction of the military stations (Williamson,
1846). Through this it is clear that the main objective for the railways was for development
commercially and for quicker and faster links to and for the military. In 1850 the production began
and by 1900 there was over 24,000 miles of railway tracks that had been laid (Kerr 1997). The
development of the railways gave the impression that it was going to largely benefit India, and mainly
India s economy, by increasing trade and transportation, almost bringing India into an age of an
Industrial Revolution, just as the railways had done for Britain in the 1800 s. However, this particular
introduction made by the British to India proved detrimental to their economy. The railway project
was enormous and was funded entirely by British private investment capitals (Satya 2008). These
private companies operated their railway lines with a guaranteed 5% return on their investment which
was assured by the Indian revenues of the empire (Satya 2008). This was one of the biggest reasons
why the railways caused a decline in India s economy. This guarantee system promised that even if the

Hillman Tillman is an ice hockey player that had a chief complaint of lower back pain after the team s
game last night. He is a 21 year old defenseman that had been playing ice hockey for 7 years. He
alleged that he went to check the opposing player whose back was facing him. As he was about to
check him, the player turned around and crosschecked him with his stick in his shoulder, causing him
to hyperextend his back and fall on the ice. He got back up and continued to play with no pain. He
never had this injury before. However, he stated that he took hyper extensive hits similar to this one,
but were less severe and experienced no pain. He woke up this morning to stretch after getting out of
bed and felt a sharp pain in his lower back. He had pain when bending over to tie his shoes, sitting
down for a long period of time, and standing in one stance for about an hour. He had ... Show more

He will begin with a heat pack for approximately fifteen minutes and jog on the treadmill for ten
minutes. For off ice exercises, he will stickhandle while balancing on two dyna discs. He will start
double leg, three times for thirty seconds each, progress to single leg and three times for a minute
each, and eventually to lateral jumps on the dyna discs while stickhandling, ten on each leg. Hillman
will then do single leg kettlebell deadlifts, ten on each leg. The next exercise will be to do lateral
slides on the slideboard, ten on each side, progress to stickhandling while performing the exercise, and
advance to doing this on the ice. He will then go ahead and practice with the team in a non contact
jersey on if he is able to with no concerns with mobility. If not, he will still practice after the team gets
off and it is just him. He will then end with either an ice bag or cold tub for fifteen minutes. This last

Essay About Chapter 1
The metal pieces shot through the wolf like creature s head, turning it into a black liquid substance
before forming back into a head again. Seeing this Malessica started to move away from it. Epsilon
followed Malessica, trying to keep a distance from the creature. Dorian had still been in the area,
trying to find an opportunity to strike. Once he found his moment, Dorian clenched his right fist
tightly sending a punch at the wolf creature. The creature turned its head towards Dorian, avoiding the
punch and biting his arm. Dorian s body started to become visible again, watching the blood drip from
his arm. How did it see him! Epsilon thought. He was completely invisible. Sylvia laughed, sitting on
top of a car. What an interesting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Epsilon shot out a bolt of lightning towards the bear, instantly turning the bear into a black liquid.
Though it was a good hit, the ink eventually formed back into a bear. Dorian placed his hand over his
bitten arm. Attacking those creations are pointless. The only time these things are going away, is if we
defeat the user, though getting to her might be a bit hard. She s a long range fighter so she ll make sure
we don t get too close. Sylvia smirked. A man with so much experience in combat. Though you re part
of S.P.D I m actually more impressed by you. You re able to understand my power, but you ve barely
seen the things I can create. My manifestation: Living Ink, is unbeatable. We need to make a plan.
Dorian whispered. We ll just be wasting energy fighting these things. Epsilon surrounded his body
with electricity. If you want to deal with long distance fighters, I m the guy you want. I have ranged
attacks and my flash flicker allows me to move much faster than most people, I can close the distance
between myself and her, no problem. Using Flash flicker, Epsilon sped past Malessica and Dorian,
making his way to Sylvia. Stopping in front of her, he sent a strong yet quick punch to her stomach,
causing her to spit up, sending her flying back. Malessica smiled as Epsilon delivered a strong blow.
Epsilon noticed the snake tattoo from around her neck, jumped towards him turning into ink as it
landed on his arm. The snake tattoo,

Zinn Chapter 1
Sujay Deshpande
Mr. Lifland
AP US History
1 August 2015
A People s History of the United States: By Howard Zinn
Chapter 1:
Chapter one of Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States discusses the differences
between the culture and attitudes of the Europeans and the Native Americans. It further describes how
the Europeans came to the New World and committed genocide against the Native Americans in order
to get land and gold from them, which displayed the cruelty and greed of the European explorers
coming to the Americas. However, many historians consider these actions by the European
Conquistadors to be necessary in order for human progress to occur, but Zinn argues whether human
progress needed all of these barbaric actions. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zinn mentions throughout the text about how awfully treated women were compared to men and how
they were considered inferior to men. Zinn believes that the discrimination and mistreatment of
women during the Colonial time period was the leading cause of the first movements of women s
rights in America. Zinn initially talks about the difference of treatment between Native American
women and women in the colonies, as he writes, It would be an exaggeration to say that women were
treated equally with men; but they were treated with respect, and the communal nature of the society
gave them a more important place. (Zinn) This quotation shows how the Native American women
were treated with respect from others while the women in the colonies were sexually abused and
considered worthless by their masters and husbands. Zinn uses this evidence to really show the better
treatment of Native American women compared to the women in the colonies. In addition, Zinn goes
into further detail about the treatment of women and references to what the slave traders saw, as they
state, I saw pregnant women give birth to babies while chained to corpses which our drunken
overseers had not removed... . packed spoon fashion they often gave birth to children in the scalding
perspiration from the human cargo. (Zinn) This quotation shows the awful

The Rights of Homesexuals to Serve in the Military Essay
After the eighteen long years of the Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy, which limits gays from being open
about their sexuality in the military services, was finally brought to its end. President Barack Obama
signed the reverse of the Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy on December 22, 2010. It was also stated that
The services will no longer separate service members under DADT (U.S. Department of Defense).
Nevertheless, homosexuals should have the opportunity to serve in the military because the job had
nothing to do with anyone s sexual orientation.
The plan was first announced in 1993 as a compromise after President Bill Clinton wanted to remove
the military s ban on gays. Though, Congress had its opponents on the turn and so were some ... Show

The Military Times Poll found that about ten percent of servicemen would want to leave if gays were
finally allowed to serve openly in the forces (Bowman). Yet, with each discharge of gays in the army,
commission displays that taxpayers are remarkably paying around $360 million that aids the new
replacements in the tasks or jobs in which the gays had before. According to the studies of U.C.L.A.,
...lifting the ban could increase the number of active duty personnel by more than 40,000. As well, on
2006 a poll exposed that only three quarters of the soldiers that were coming back home from Iraq and
Afghanistan disclosed that they had nothing against gays and they remained personally comfortable
with them. Numerous of soldiers knew somebody that was gay in their base and self proclaimed that
their existence had nothing unpleasant or disturbing towards them (Barr 22).
If somebody is placing their life on the line to protect and serve our country then who are we to take
that right away from them or judge them for who they are. The only thing that should be judged in
anyone s life is how they perform or do well on their job. For years many gays have proficient high
quality work in the military, yet later discharged instantly after their sexual orientation is exposed; and

Clarence s Speech in William Shakespeare s Richard III Essay
Clarence s Speech in William Shakespeare s Richard III
The speech I am going to be examining is from one of Shakespeare s plays, Richard III. It is the part
of the play where George, Duke of Clarence is explaining a prophetic nightmare he had whilst being
locked in the Tower of London.
Richard III was a real king of England, but had been killed in battle, around 100 years prior to when
Shakespeare wrote this play. At the time of writing, in 1594, the queen was Elizabeth I, a Tudor. One
of the Queens ancestors, Henry VII, had killed Richard III on Bosworth Field. Shakespeare, to make
sure he was in favour with the Queen, made Richard s character into a complete villain, as well as
physically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This helps to build up drama and create a vivid picture in the minds of those watching the plays. This
was especially important in the Elizabethan times, as stages had limited scenery and special effects.
The beginning of Clarence s speech is full of warnings and phrases that suggest death. He begins his
speech telling Brackenbury that, in his dream, he thought he had broken from the Tower and was on a
ship to Burgundy with Richard. He says Richard tempted him to walk over the deck. The word
tempted is a word often used when talking of the devil as the devil tries to lure people into sin. When
Clarence uses this word to describe Richard s actions, it is like if Richard is being described as devil
like.
He then says that he and Richard looked towards England, and recalled a thousand heavy times,
during the wars of York and Lancaster, that had befallen us. A thousand is an exaggeration, but it
shows that Clarence is being warned of more bad things to come. This sets the mood of the speech. It
is full of warnings and sentences suggesting bad times.
Clarence says Methought that Gloucester stumbled, and in falling, struck me . This is a forewarning
that Richard is going to cause Clarence to suffer in the future. When Clarence says methought it shows
that he is a bit doubtful as to whether it was an accident or not. He thinks that it was an accident when

Dog is Man s Best Friend Essay
BAM! Dogs, now a man s best friend. The most common pet, thanks to wolves. Now let s go
way back in time before dogs existed. Now, wolves gradually evolved into dogs. A wolf and a dog
are the same species. They also have the same DNA. Hunting dogs are more related to wolves.
Some people long ago tried to breed dogs by changing their features. For example, a doberman
pinscher got most of its tail cut off. Now they have such small tails! A corgi has a natural tail. A great
dane has surgically cut ears so that they are standing up. A scottish terrier looks like it has a beard but
its just that the hair on its neck got shaved off.
After the common breeds got created, the owners gave the dogs jobs according to their qualities. ...

Since mixed breed s parents are different breeds, the child has
new traits and characteristics. Most people who want a dog prefer mixes because they have health
advantages. But they also need lots of treatment. Mixes are less likely to many diseases than pure
breeds. People who find energetic mixes even leave the dog as rescue dogs. Before the 1980s mixes
were thought as strange and incapable of obeying and controlling themselves. They were left out of
obedience competitions. So in that case, mixes usually didn t compete. Mix breeds are hard to classify
since they are made of two breeds. Also, their maturity is less predictable than the pure breeds. But
mix
mixed breeds also have a higher intelligence average than pure breeds. Also a higher intelligence
capacity than pure breeds. That s why they can learn tricks so easily. Mixes are also preferred because
they are healthier and more long lived than pure breed dogs. Mixes are also preferable because they
have desirable reproduction traits. One of them is that a mother that is a mix gives better milk and the
second is that they gives better care. Mixes have very unique looks and characteristics. People who
want dogs prefer mixed breeds for the reasons I stated before.
Pure breeds are very nice and elegant to look at. Both of their parents are the same breed. Pure
breeds are very good at hunting, herding, and being working dogs (such as pulling sleds). Pure breeds

The Significance of Kokoda
The significance of Kokoda for Australian s can be seen in many different ways. In a strategic sense
and also in a symbolic sense. Firstly, the Kokoda Campaign saved Australia from possible invasion, or
more precisely from being isolated from the United States of America . Secondly, Kokoda was the
battle that lead to victory in the Second World War, as well as to improvement of Australia s post war
practices and military operations. Symbolically, the Kokoda Track will be remembered when Australia
s think of the Second World War, just like when you think of the First World War, the landing at
Gallipoli looms large, both have captured the Australian imagination. Each year five thousand

As the Kokoda fighting began in July 1942 , the scheme of both sides was in transition. The Japanese
felt it was time to defend their gains, and halt the fighting and advancing. But the Allies were thinking
differently. Having massive amount troops, ships, aircraft and supplies in New Zealand and Australia,
they made the decision to launch a counterattack to defend and retake some of the islands that were
occupied by the Japanese. Papua had no particular resource that they desired, but it was a useful link
in the chain of defences of the newly conquered area of Japan. So because Japan was quickly gaining
new lands closer to Australia, posing a threat to Australia s safety, the battle of Kokoda was the most
important Australian fought victory, in terms of winning the war. The campaign helped to shape
Australia s post war training practices and military operations. Although it was not they first victory
against Japan, it allowed the allies to make thrust forward through island hopping and ultimately win
the war. Kokoda was the battle that ended Japan s dominance and permitted the Allies to go on the
offence. Australia greatly learned from their Kokoda experience, and subsequently improved their
strategic thinking. They learned to not purely rely on naval defences, and realised that they cannot just
let other countries dot the fighting. ...the modern Australian professional army was

Project Is Focussed On The Exploitation Of Alm
The research project is focussed on the exploitation of ALM. The main premise of the study is to
understand how to mobilize firm resources (with ALM as an important element) to best serve
individuals whilst identifying how firms can be compensated for the use of the offering within the
customers context. By focussing on serving context, we shift from a mind set of value in exchange to
value in use where each individual determines the value of the offering themselves during the use and
experience of the offering. This concept of value in use already suggests a move away from a
positivist ideal towards an interpretivist one where each individual has their own interpretation of the
offerings value rather than the firm believing that value is embedded within the offering at the point of
purchase. Instead, the firm produces only potential value which is then uniquely and
phenomenologically determined by the customer through the use of the offering. However, given the
research focuses on resource mobilisation and transaction (compensation) boundaries, it is difficult to
acknowledge how an interpretivist philosophy could seek to answer these research questions. It is for
these reasons that critical realism has been identified as an appropriate philosophical approach for this
research, but what is critical realism?
Critical realism has been formed out of frustration with positivism and constructivism and the
associated limitations of the two concepts. Founded by Bhaskar through a

Propensity-Score Matching (Psm). The Propensity Score...
Propensity Score Matching (PSM)
The propensity score matching model is a method used to evaluate the average effect of a programme
on participants outcome, conditional on the pre participation characteristics of such participants
(Bryson, Dorsett, Purdon, 2002). The PSM technique has been applied widely in a variety of fields in
the program evaluation (Heinrich et al., 2010).The model is appropriate for addressing the problem of
selection bias (Wooldridge, 2002) in determining the difference between the participant s outcome
with (in this case adoption of weather index insurance) and without (non adoption of the weather
index insurance) programme (Pufahl Weiss, 2008). Pufahl Weiss also note that participants and non

Instrumental variables and design approach, though suitable raises difficulties in finding a suitable
instrument because, in identifying the treatment effect, one needs at least one regressor which
determines participation, but is not itself determined by the factors which affect outcomes (Blundell
Costa Dias, 2000; J. J. Heckman, 1995).
The regression discontinuity method on the other hand needs a large number of farmers next to the
discontinuity to draw meaningful decision. However, this is difficult because the further one moves
from the discontinuity line the more the variable characteristics vary (Winters et al., 2010). PSM
assumes that farmers who receive treatment and those who do not, differ not only in treatment, but
also in characteristics that affect participation and the outcome (Heinrich et al., 2010). It thus seeks
untreated (in our case non adopters of weather index) farmers who have the same characteristics of the
treated (adopters of weather index) farmers and matching them using propensity scores and thus
creating a quasi experiment (Winters et al., 2010). The propensity score was therefore used to estimate
the probability of receiving treatment (adoption of

Symptoms And Causes Of Child Physical Abuse
Along with symptoms and causes of child physical abuse, physical abuse has long term impacts on
children. According to Adults Surviving Child Abuse (2015), research has found that childhood abuse
contributes to the likelihood of depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, personality disorders, sexual
disorders and suicidal behavior. A recent study found that almost 76% of adults reporting child
physical abuse and neglect have at least one psychiatric disorder in their lifetime and nearly 50% have
three or more psychiatric disorders (Adults Surviving Child Abuse, 2015). Several long term impacts
include decrease performance at school or education, criminal risk taking behaviors, drugs and alcohol
problems, medical diseases, relationships problems, isolation/social disconnection and behavior health
effects. Performance at school or education is decreased since the child attends school less frequently.
A physical abuse child misses school to conceal their injuries. Children that were physically abused
are more likely to engage in drug and alcohol. According to Wisdom and Hiller Sturmhofel (n.d),
experience of being abused as a child may increase a person s risk for alcohol related problems as an
adult. For medical diseases, a study shown in multivariate models controlling for age, sex, childhood
adversities, and family background, childhood physical abuse predicted a graded increase in
depression, anxiety, anger, physical symptoms, and medical diagnoses. Childhood physical

Leisure And Leisure Time Vs. Leisure Time
We do not only gain utility from our consumption. We also gain utility from leisure. Leisure time is
the time you spend outside of work. In the similar way of maximizing utility from our purchases, we
decide the number of hours of work that will yield us the highest utility, in other words, that makes us
the happiest. People make money by giving up some leisure time. The more leisure hours you
sacrifice to go to work, the more income you earn. Leisure time or activities are contrasted, implicitly
or directly, with worktime or productive activities. (Moore and Hedges, 1971) Leisure time could be
used for vacation, resting, playing golf or other activities that we enjoy doing. Thus, economists see
leisure as a normal good that provides us with satisfaction. On the other hand, income generates
purchasing power so we can purchase goods and services we desire. In other words, income gives us
satisfaction in an indirect way. As both income and leisure yield utility, everyone has their own
indifference curve between income and leisure, depending on personal preferences.
An indifference curve is constituted by a set of combinations of income and leisure hours that yield
the same level of utility. Indifference curves are downward sloping and convex to the origin. They are
parallel to each other they do not intersect. The distance between an indifference curve and the origin
indicates the utility level of the individual, as it gets longer, the satisfaction of the individual becomes

  • 2. Strategic Dissection Paper on “Microsoft Corporation” Abstract This paper defines and exemplifies some of the strategies presented by David (2008) that are currently being used by the Microsoft organization. This work presents different levels of strategy (corporate and functional), some of integration and intensive strategies. Levels of strategy The corporate level of management consists of the chief executive officer (CEO), other senior executives, and corporate staff. The main role of corporate level managers is to observe the development of strategies for the whole organization. This role includes defining the goals of the organization, determining what businesses it should be in, allocating resources among the different businesses, formulating and implementing strategies that span ... In early 1994, Gates received e mails from two young employees, Jay Allard and Steve Sinofsky, who argued that Microsoft s current strategy was misguided and ignored the rapidly emerging Web. In companies with a more hierarchical culture, such action might have been ignored, but in Microsoft, which operates as a meritocracy in which good ideas trump hierarchical position, it produced a very different response. Gates convened a meeting of senior executives in April 1994 and then wrote a memo to senior executives arguing that the Internet represented a sea change in computing and that Microsoft had to respond. Integration strategies Microsoft is using a forward integration strategy, which usually involves gaining ownership or increased control over distributors or retailers. (David, 2010) Microsoft s forward integration includes opening its own retail stores. Microsoft wants to learn firsthand about what consumers want and how they buy. Intensive Strategies A market penetration strategy seeks to increase market share for present products or services in present markets through greater marketing efforts. Market penetration includes increasing the number of salespersons, increasing advertising expenditures, offering extensive sales promotion items, or increasing publicity efforts. • 3. Danger Of Mount Everest Essay Dangers of Mount Everest Climbing Mount Everest is a very dangerous extreme sport because it can not only be dangerous to yourself, but also to others. Mount Everest has a lot of dangers killing and injuring people every year. Other climbers on the mountain can also be a danger to yourself and other climbers. If a climber ahead of you happens to slip or fall then he could fall on you hurting the both of you. People on Everest are tired, sick, and sore which gives them an even bigger chance of something dangerous happening. When climbing Mount Everest there is a spot on the mountain called the death zone. The death zone is at the 8,000 meter mark of the mountain. The wind at the death zone is at its coldest and the air is at its thinnest. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On Mount Everest there are many crevasses opening up and closing. A crevasse is usually found under a new snow bridge which is made of snow from previous years. They are sometimes very hard to see and are very lethal. When you can see them and have to cross them then you have to use a ladder and must be very careful crossing because the spikes on your shoes are slippery against the metal ladder, and you must also use a rope for assistance. Weather on Everest is also a big danger to consider. On the mountain wind can reach up to 100 mph or even more. If the weather is bad on the mountain you shouldn t go out and climb again, you should wait for safe days. The temperature on Everest can range from 10 to 25 celsius. The weather is probably the worst physical danger o n Everest. Whenever you can you need to check what the weather is going to be like before going back out and climbing. Another very common danger is frostbite. Frostbite occurs when different body parts aren t warm enough. It normally happens to hands and feet. Frostbite makes the affected area blackish blue. Major Cargo type is iron ore and coal. Vessel sizes are 80,000 DWT to 210,000 DWT. Cape size carriers travel around Cape Horn rather than the Panama Canal due to size constraints. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the market demand for shipping capacity was high, owners would keep a vessel in operation as long as possible. Conversely, when market demand was low, scrapping rose. There had been very few scrapping in recent years, one reason might be that most of the capacity of the worldwide fleet of capsizes was fairly young which we can see from Exhibit 5, another reason might be the market demand is strong recently. Market demand is affected by trading volumes, world economy and even trading patterns. For example, in 2003, the Australian and Indian ore exports would begin, the volume would increase, demand for capsize would likely increase as well with the higher trading volumes. Exhibit 5 shows the evidence that demands (Iron ore vessel shipments) and supply (Fleet size) drive the average daily hire rate (Avg. spot rate). Factor 2: World economy The average daily hire rate is also determined by the world economy, especially its basic industries. When the economy is strong, the production and demand for the shipped products increase thus will result a lower hire rate. Conversely, when the world economy is in a recession, the hire rate will be lower. Take an example, the average hire rate declined in 1998 and 1999 because of the effect of 1998 financial crisis. Factor 3: Age of ships Average hire rate is influenced by the age of the ships. If a company s vessels are relatively new than the industry average, it earned a premium in daily hire rate

  • 6. Comparing A Respectable Woman And The Awakening In the late nineteenth century, Kate Chopin published two of her controversial short stories, A Respectable Woman and The Awakening. A Respectable Woman is about a character named Mrs. Baroda and how she dreams of committing adultery with her husband s friend. She never takes the leap, though. In The Awakening, a woman named Edna begins to have feelings for a man she met on her family vacation, Robert. She realizes that she feels depressed with her husband so she moves out. Then, she tries to get together with Robert, but he does not want to commit such heinous acts. Eventually, she finds herself committing the act with another man to satisfy her sexual desires. In the end, Edna finally realizes that she is lonely and no one can please her. As a female modern writer of the late nineteenth century, Kate Chopin was harshly scrutinized and could not turn from the criticism of her new writings from the old ways. Kate Chopin went through several tragic instances in her life. She was five years old when she lost her father. Her grandmother died when Chopin was thirteen and her brother during the war of typhoid fever. Unfortunately, the events that took place involved the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making Us Stupid Major Paper II:Rhetorical Analysis In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid , the main argument the author, Nicholas Carr is trying to make is to explain how the Internet becomes our only source of information. Carr is also trying to warn oncoming generations in how the Internet has affected our ability to read long pieces or to be able to retain information for a long period of time. Carr provides personal experience, imagery, and a professional analysis that is backed by research to hook the audience in and persuade them that in today s society, the Internet is only causing problems rather than any solutions.Throughout the article Carr provides an abundant amount of rhetorical modes by giving examples and studies from different organizations . Carr gives an insight on the positive ways the Internet had influenced his life. The author s tone changes in paragraph 4 when Carr talks about how the Internet has altered his mind by crumbling away at how much he can concrete. When Carr states For me, as for others, the Net is becoming a universal medium in paragraph four the author provides his counter argument which is to warn the incoming generations the dangers of the Internet before his main argument. Which is that the Internet is making us stupid and is altering how we think, by doing this it allows Carr to spend the rest of the article refuting his main argument. In order to move along his argument the first thing Carr does is share a problem with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Requirements For Commission Management And Management 3.1.1 Requirements for commission management RBM is part of commission management and comes under the managerial responsibility of the officer responsible for the commission. It is very important to ensure that the results based monitoring system is based on the results model. The monitoring system must be possible to provide information all the time on the following points:  whether and to what extent the measure is moving towards the objective in accordance with the results model and the underlying assumptions;  whether the expected results as well as unexpected positive or negative results are being generated;  what systematic management and strategic decisions can be identified for steering the measure;  to what extent the measure contributes to achieving overarching results, and  whether risks influence the achievement of results by the measure 3.1.2 What needs to be monitored? Impact Impacts describe indirect benefits of our interventions. Our programme contributes to impact. The main purpose of impact monitoring is to prove whether our interventions are bringing and will have potential to bring the defined changes that has been agreed on programme objective. • 9. Essay on Hit Song Science 1. What value does Hit Song Science create? If you were Mike McCready, CEO of Polyphonic, which target market unsigned artists, producers, or record companies would you pursue? Before we analyze the value Hit Song Science creates, we should be clearly aware of the substance of Hit Song Science. Hit Song Science refers to comparing the mathematical characteristics of music with characteristics of past music hits to determine a song s hit potential. From my point of view, the value Hit Song Science creates can be classified into two aspects technology and business. On the technological level, Hit Song Science is an advanced technology in that it mixes music and math which cannot be perceived as relevant in a daily life. It is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Producers are in the same situation. Inside producers only receive salary plus some royalties as compensation. While outside producers received a production fee and negotiated a royalty of 1% to 5%of the suggested retail price. Production fee varied dramatically, which means the production fee producers received depends most on the level of the producers themselves and the level of the artists they helped. However, they were only about 20 to 30 top producers who may receive so high production fee that they would like to pay for Hit Song Science. Other producers with low or relatively low production fee may not be willing to pay for Hit Song Science out of their slender income. It makes sense that famous artists prefer top producers who can help them make a hit and in turn, receive benefit from the hit. If artists, unsigned artists and producers only received a small portion of income from music, the biggest winner in the process of recording activity is record company. Managers and talent agents alone extract between 25% and 40% of a performer s income. Record labels have the ability to pay for Hit Song Science. More importantly, they want to forecast sales levels for the titles in their portfolios. Based on the high market size of record labels and the necessity to forecast whether a song can become a hit via Hit Song Science due to high releasing fees, polyphonic should pursue ... • 10. Subprime Lending Defining Subprime Lending The problem to be investigated is the effect of subprime mortgage loans on the economy. According to Merriam Webster subprime is defined as having or being an interest rate that is higher than a prime rate and is extended especially to low income borrowers; extending or obtaining a subprime loan (Webster, 2012). Subprime mortgage loans are loans given to people with a low credit score. Subprime borrowers normally don t qualify for prime loans or prime lending. According to Jennings, the subprime mortgage market is defined to include those borrowers with a FICO (Fair Isaac Co.) score below 570 (Jennings, 2012, p. 434). The American Dream Home ownership has always been a big part of the American Dream. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The vast majority of subprime loans are now securitized; leading to claims that securitization facilitates predatory lending and should actively police lenders. New standards to protect borrowers against unfair practices were launched 1 July including requirements to ensure they are not lured into credit contracts they cannot afford to repay. The standards include provisions to stop predatory lenders from exploitative practices such as using household items as security for cash loans (Engel, K. amp; McCoy, 2007). Lender and Incentives One has to wonder, why were subprime loans pitched to consumers? They weren t pushed for altruistic purposes; not from the kindness of the heart. The results were inevitable. According to the readings, subprime loans ended with the same result. They were a risk for the consumer as well as the bank backing the loan. There had to be some incentive for the banks; some benefit that is reaped. In this case, it was a monetary benefit. Yield spread premiums is what lenders call them. Consumer groups call them legal kickbacks. YSPs are the cash that mortgage brokers or lenders get for steering a borrower into a home loan with a higher interest rate (Center for Responsible Lending, Yield Spread Premiums (YSPS). However, the Federal Reserve stepped in and regulated these kickbacks. New rules issued by the Federal Reserve Board mean that YSPs are no longer legal. • 11. The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God Our textbook Philosophy: An Introduction to the Art of Wondering, states that the teleological argument for the existence of God is based on the apparent order and design of nature and cosmos, and on the purposive nature of evolution (Christian, 2012, p. 611). The cosmos can be explained currently with mathematical calculations, principles that are physical and chemical in nature, and psychobiological processes (Christian, 2012, p. 611). Living organisms have distinctive metabolic and life cycle rhythms.... Subatomic studies have revealed the complex configurations of energy patterns.... Cosmic processes run through ordered sequences resembling birth, life, and death (Christian, 2012, p. 611). Thus, the teleological case follows a path or fate, such that occurrence of life transpired from a potential edict from some higher intelligence, namely God. ... The universe and biological systems often display randomness. In order to find hard data to clarify and defend the answer would be difficult, since it is hard, if not impossible, to prove and verify that God exists. There is empirical observation, but not proven reasoning. Significant analysis in the form of scholarly articles can be found and various thoughts for and against the teleological argument, but not hard data. However, the teleological argument is convincing and is probably the most popular argument in attempting to prove the existence of God. • 12. Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapter 6 Summary Chapter 6 of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston starts out by describing how Janie detests running the store, but also how she finds some joy in listening to the bright stories the townsfolk have on the porch. The guys there like to tease Matt Bonner a man with an overworked good for nothing mule. Jody, regardless of Janie s wonderment in the stories, forbids her from hanginging out with the trashy people out on the porch. Because of the men who constantly are entranced by Janie s hair, Jody commands her to wear a head rag around her head due to his overgrown jealousy. One day Matt Bonner s mule runs away and ends up outside of the store, where some townsmen are torturing it for their own amusement. Janie does not like this and mutters her disapproval, Jody hears her and decides to buy the mule for five dollars so it can finally be at peace. After the mule finally dies, Jody has a mock funeral which turns into a town wide gathering, none of which Janie is allowed to attend to. Later on at the store, Janie and Jody get into an argument where she tells him that he is no fun, and he tells her that he is just trying to be responsible. As time goes on the indignation that Janie holds for Jody only grows stronger. One day, Jody slaps Janie after seven years of having met each other after a treacherous dinner. Later that same day, Mrs. Robbins begs Jody for a little meat for her family which Jody spares. The men on the porch talk crudely about the woman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The dress code was formal and quite severe it was almost as if the longer your top hat the higher up the rank you are in importance in society. In this story we meet a man who wants to help the society and quality of living whereas the other wants to destroy order as he is what s known as an anarchist. This is someone who is feels that people should be responsible for there own actions and decisions meaning they govern their own lives. We know that this is true as the scientist says, it is a phial which turns things blue so that is the only thing he will achieve . The two characters in the story who are set on big ideas are the Scientist and the anarchist. The scientist is pompous and idealistic and likes the sound of his own voice, as he kept on talking about the bacillus. The anarchist is high flown and self important, there is a bit of self pity and neglect but then again he is pathetic and can t seek attention in any other way. There is definitely an element of frustration in his life as no one listens to his ideas or what he has to say this is partly the reason why he wants to cause chaos with the stolen bacillus. We know this as it says, The world shall hear of him at last. All those people who laughed neglected him and preferred other people to him will consider him now . The Liberation Of Women During The 18th And The 19th Century Uprising of Women in Psychology Sydney Alan Brackin University of Montevallo Abstract This paper shows the liberation of women in the 18th and the 19th Century, showing the different waves of feminist in psychology. It s important to remember the gradual changes and actions displayed. I choose to finalize this paper with Christine Ladd Franklin. She was the first women to complete the necessary requirements for a PhD. Her contributions to mathematics and psychology paved the way for other women to succeed. Uprising of Women in Psychology Women as Other Throughout history women have not been given proper recognition for their insight in the field of psychology. They were simply labeled as Other. Simone de Beauvoir, philosopher examines the concepts of woman and in relation to the larger concepts of humanity. She concludes that women s status is not simply a matter of definition, but a fundamental way of thinking that has political consequences. What is a Woman? This question may seem to be rudimentary, but when thought about women are the foundation for life. Women are more than their uterus, or an imperfect man. It was believed that women were made from man s image, Adam and Eve. This alone gives rise to men and lessens women as an individual. Man cannot think of himself without the other. Without women there would be no man. In the most primitive societies there is duality between the self and the other. These were not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Writing did not seem like anything important in my life, or that it would affect me anyway in the future. I had despised my own writing and loathed having to write essays for any of my classes. When I had enrolled in Composition I, I had no idea what I was going to do to pass. However, in class, we had done collaborative work, which had helped me progress myself. Collaborative work had consisted of multiple students helping each other, sharing ideas, and peer reviews. This was a change of pace for me since I had not done that before. In previous classes, I had done individual work, which was solely myself correcting and working on my work. Between collaborative work and individual work, I enjoyed working with partners and sharing each other s experiences to benefit ourselves. Over this class I have developed my writing skills, learned from my previous mistakes, and understood the writing process. To begin with, before taking this class I would have grammar errors, low level word choices, sentence fragments, contractions, and no sentence variety. The grammar in my essays would be something that I had never worked on or learned from. My word choices were that of a middle schooler and would sound childish at times. I had never taken the time to learn about the sentence variety and combinations that were possible. My knowledge of sentence variety was limited to only compound and ... It is also the first type of real debt incurred by many. Late loan payments seriously harm credit records and ruin a credit history for years. The Christmas Holiday From The Federal Calendar Omitting the Christmas Holiday from the Federal Calendar The establishment of a legal holiday is best defined as a day where there are no courts, labor, and is a day of joy and rest. While there should be a separation of church and state, Christmas is considered a legal holiday and one needs to question the validity of establishing this day as a legal holiday when one looks at the concept of separation of church and state and considering the diversity we face in today s modern society. An illustrating example of the big chains competing with each other is Brand Match . This idea, developed by Sainsbury s in an effort to compete with Asda s low and very competitive prices, was replicated in all the other major supermarkets after it was noticed and obvious that this was a successful way to attract customers. Morrison s, taking the concept substantially further, launched a Match and More card, offering to credit the difference in points if you would have paid less for your shopping at Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury s or Asda. A solution, universally favored by each, to distinguish themselves from one another and thus attempt to assert a level of dominance within the marketplace, has been the development of their own premium range of food. A brand within a brand. This is seen, with obvious success, in Sainsbury s Taste the Difference . The Taste the Difference range is competing very well with even the higher end companies like Waitrose and Marks Spencer s. Specific word choices in the octave show this clearly. Frost employs light, pleasant, and whimsical words like dimpled, fat, snow drop, froth, and kite (7). As a heal all, its proper color is blue, and should not have been white. This is the first clue that suggests the involvement of something other than random chance. The blue had been cast aside and forgotten, and the narrator views the flower as innocent. It had been implicated in such an awful event by no fault of its own. This raises the question of whose fault it actually was. The next seems harsh and sinister, questioning what force or chance brought the spider to the top of the flower, and then why the moth flew straight into its grasps. Height normally shows superiority, but in this context, it is negative. The evil spider is high up on a mutated flower, in the perfect place at the perfect time to catch dinner. It seems hard to believe that random chance brought the spider to that particular flower. • 32. Freewill Essay Freewill Many have wondered whether free will exists or not. Some argue yes, some argue no. For now, I will say no. I will begin my argument with a scenario. Say a man has an enemy that he hates very strongly. One day this guy makes a conscious decision to kill his enemy. He calculates every move he needs to make to kill his enemy and succeeds in doing so. Clearly, this man is guilty of murder. The question is, should blame fall on this man for killing another? Currently, all societies in the world are built around some moral basis that holds a person responsible for their actions. A determinist, however, would disagree and say that people are not free, and therefore are not at fault for their actions. Human acts are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are certain variables, like baking a cake, which are accounted for such as being late, the rush it gives, or just because the wind feels good. Whatever the case may be, the act is caused. In the eyes of a determinist, caused acts have only one option. If there is only one option, then there is no freedom. So, the question arises, are all acts caused? To answer this question we must first look at the human brain and mind. Historically, when we talk about human acts we seem to be able to predict why a human acted the way they did. For example, while watching something like Montel, the host attempts to reason why a person s problem occurred. The audience then makes suggestions on how to remedy the situation. If the topic is about relationships, then the show leads to questions about relationships and why they occur. Just about every time a guest asks a question about an abusive boyfriend, the host asks what their family life was like. The overwhelming response is that people who enter into abusive relationships had abusive families. If we relate this back to the human brain and say an abusive family is a variable for an abusive boyfriend, we find that this act can be predicted. The human mind/brain appears to be broken into two parts. The first we will call instinct. The human instinct consists of all things that are embedded in the human mind for survival, like the need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Analysis Of Alain De Boordon s The Consolations Of Philosophy What is popular is not inherently true. That is what Alain De Botton is trying to show his readers through his work, The Consolations of Philosophy. While there are many beliefs that are well known and shared amongst a vast community, they can always be questioned, and if they can be questioned, there may be an exception. De Botton states that the reason people do not question our societies beliefs and values is fear of rejection by one s peers and the community as a whole; just as Socrates was. However, some things that we, as a community, hold to be true are true and should not be questioned, at times it is more important to stick to one s moral compass rather than question a societies laws. Not wanting to be alienated from society is something we fear as individuals because many people do not want to live their lives alone, being a part of a community can be important to some people and while that can be questioned, it does not mean it is a bad thing. Being able to question society allows for one to think for themselves and find their own beliefs rather than accepting the ones from the environment they were born into. Today, the world is so diverse, with a range of different and even contradictory beliefs on what is true, questioning them is The main argument presented in De Botton s reading is that what is popular is not always true. Every society has a set of beliefs they hold to be true and important. People will act according to these beliefs because it is shown to them throughout their lives that this is the correct way to behave; going against the status quo can result in unpopularity (De Botton, 2000, p9). The fear of rejection and unpopularity is strong within each society, most individuals believe that it is important to be apart of a community, being exiled from one would result in loneliness and most societal conventions, like marriage, revolve around not being alone. Society tends to put pressure on people to marry, people who do not can be seen as deficient and not to create one s own family can be a great source of anxiety for some (Blackmore, 2005, p327), it is seen as important to not be alone in one s life. • 35. British Colonization The main notable development that the British Empire brought to India during their colonisation was the railways, otherwise known as Railroads of the Raj . First proposed in 1846 by Thomas Williamson, the revenue commissioner of Bombay, who stated that Commercially, it would be best for the cotton of Berar while also allowing an immediate direction of the military stations (Williamson, 1846). Through this it is clear that the main objective for the railways was for development commercially and for quicker and faster links to and for the military. In 1850 the production began and by 1900 there was over 24,000 miles of railway tracks that had been laid (Kerr 1997). The development of the railways gave the impression that it was going to largely benefit India, and mainly India s economy, by increasing trade and transportation, almost bringing India into an age of an Industrial Revolution, just as the railways had done for Britain in the 1800 s. However, this particular introduction made by the British to India proved detrimental to their economy. The railway project was enormous and was funded entirely by British private investment capitals (Satya 2008). These private companies operated their railway lines with a guaranteed 5% return on their investment which was assured by the Indian revenues of the empire (Satya 2008). This was one of the biggest reasons why the railways caused a decline in India s economy. This guarantee system promised that even if the companies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main premise of the study is to understand how to mobilize firm resources (with ALM as an important element) to best serve individuals whilst identifying how firms can be compensated for the use of the offering within the customers context. By focussing on serving context, we shift from a mind set of value in exchange to value in use where each individual determines the value of the offering themselves during the use and experience of the offering. This concept of value in use already suggests a move away from a positivist ideal towards an interpretivist one where each individual has their own interpretation of the offerings value rather than the firm believing that value is embedded within the offering at the point of purchase. Instead, the firm produces only potential value which is then uniquely and phenomenologically determined by the customer through the use of the offering. However, given the research focuses on resource mobilisation and transaction (compensation) boundaries, it is difficult to acknowledge how an interpretivist philosophy could seek to answer these research questions. It is for these reasons that critical realism has been identified as an appropriate philosophical approach for this research, but what is critical realism? Critical realism has been formed out of frustration with positivism and constructivism and the associated limitations of the two concepts. Founded by Bhaskar through a ... J. Heckman, 1995). The regression discontinuity method on the other hand needs a large number of farmers next to the discontinuity to draw meaningful decision. However, this is difficult because the further one moves from the discontinuity line the more the variable characteristics vary (Winters et al., 2010). PSM assumes that farmers who receive treatment and those who do not, differ not only in treatment, but also in characteristics that affect participation and the outcome (Heinrich et al., 2010). It thus seeks untreated (in our case non adopters of weather index) farmers who have the same characteristics of the treated (adopters of weather index) farmers and matching them using propensity scores and thus creating a quasi experiment (Winters et al., 2010). The propensity score was therefore used to estimate the probability of receiving treatment (adoption of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Symptoms And Causes Of Child Physical Abuse Along with symptoms and causes of child physical abuse, physical abuse has long term impacts on children. According to Adults Surviving Child Abuse (2015), research has found that childhood abuse contributes to the likelihood of depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, personality disorders, sexual disorders and suicidal behavior. A recent study found that almost 76% of adults reporting child physical abuse and neglect have at least one psychiatric disorder in their lifetime and nearly 50% have three or more psychiatric disorders (Adults Surviving Child Abuse, 2015). Several long term impacts include decrease performance at school or education, criminal risk taking behaviors, drugs and alcohol problems, medical diseases, relationships problems, isolation/social disconnection and behavior health effects. Performance at school or education is decreased since the child attends school less frequently. A physical abuse child misses school to conceal their injuries. Children that were physically abused are more likely to engage in drug and alcohol. According to Wisdom and Hiller Sturmhofel (n.d), experience of being abused as a child may increase a person s risk for alcohol related problems as an adult. For medical diseases, a study shown in multivariate models controlling for age, sex, childhood adversities, and family background, childhood physical abuse predicted a graded increase in depression, anxiety, anger, physical symptoms, and medical diagnoses. • 51. Leisure And Leisure Time Vs. Leisure Time We do not only gain utility from our consumption. We also gain utility from leisure. Leisure time is the time you spend outside of work. In the similar way of maximizing utility from our purchases, we decide the number of hours of work that will yield us the highest utility, in other words, that makes us the happiest. People make money by giving up some leisure time. The more leisure hours you sacrifice to go to work, the more income you earn. Leisure time or activities are contrasted, implicitly or directly, with worktime or productive activities. (Moore and Hedges, 1971) Leisure time could be used for vacation, resting, playing golf or other activities that we enjoy doing. Thus, economists see leisure as a normal good that provides us with satisfaction. On the other hand, income generates purchasing power so we can purchase goods and services we desire. In other words, income gives us satisfaction in an indirect way. As both income and leisure yield utility, everyone has their own indifference curve between income and leisure, depending on personal preferences. An indifference curve is constituted by a set of combinations of income and leisure hours that yield the same level of utility. Indifference curves are downward sloping and convex to the origin. They are parallel to each other they do not intersect. The distance between an indifference curve and the origin indicates the utility level of the individual, as it gets longer, the satisfaction of the individual becomes ...
