The document outlines a sociology seminar project where students will be split into groups and assigned one of three topics: the genocides in Rwanda, Cambodia, or Bosnia. Each group will research their assigned genocide, including definitions of genocide, background context, key events, statistics, perpetrators, causes, international reactions, aftermath and lessons learned. Groups will present for 5-7 minutes on their topic and generate 3 discussion questions. All group members must participate in the presentation and actively listen to contribute to the subsequent discussion.
1. A2 Sociology- Seminar Project: State Crime & Genocide - Briefing
You will be split into 3 groups to research and present your seminar topic.
The 3 topics we will be covering are:
1. Genocide in Rwanda
2. Genocide in Cambodia
3. Genocide in Bosnia
You will need to research and look at concepts like:
- What is Genocide?
- What was the background situation in that country?
- What happened in the country? (overview & key events)
- What are the key statistics associated with the genocide?
- Were the actions an act of Genocide?
- Who organised and controlled the actions? Was the state behind it?
- Why did the genocide occur?
- What was the reaction of the International Community?
- Were any other countries involved? Why did they get involved?
Should they have been involved?
- Why did it stop?
- What was the aftermath? Lessons learned? New laws as a result?
- Would this happen again?
You must make sure that when conducting your research you are reading through
the material in order to be able to answer the questions above in your own
words- not just reading off a paragraph cut & paste from the internet. I am
looking for REAL understanding of the topics and its surrounding issues.
REMEMBER- in the seminar you need to present enough information so that ALL
other members of the group can understand the topic you are presenting,
allowing them to ask questions and discuss the issues. You can create a handout
if you prefer to distribute to the group to help support your presentation of the
key issues.
You must do more than just list dates and facts about the events that happened,
I am looking for analysis and evaluation of the situation, which you can only show
if you have read about the topic and understand it.
Your presentation of the topic should last between 5-7 mins, every member of
your group is to participate. You will then move on to inviting questions or points
for discussion. You should have at least 3 questions/points for discussion that
you can introduce.E.G Should the United Nations have sent troops into Rwanda
to try and stop the Genocide?
REMEMBER- just because you are not presenting doesn’t mean you switch off!!
YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISCUSSION AT THE
END, WHICH YOU CANNOT DO IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN LISTENING!!!!
